Chapter Seven.

Chosen to be the Rescuer

& No Rest for the Weary

Morning came with the sound of thunder in the distance. It was cold, and everyone was still a bit sleepy, but today they had to get moving. They all got ready for the day in the cold moist morning air even as Shadow yawned as he watched them pack. He was very troubled and tired after last night, but he didn't display his discomfort from what Cilia had said to him. He simply waited for Evin to put him in his pokeball so he could rest for the day, which would earn him more time to sort out his troubled feelings. Dawn and Evin pulled out rainwear incase it was going to rain, which after they checked their pokenavs, they were sure it was. Then after a quick breakfast, they set off down some well-used paths back to the road in hopes of getting into the dense forest before the rain hit.

They walked quietly in the morning air, as the scenery seemed fragile with the collection of dew drops on all the plants as they passed trees full of sleeping bug pokemon and other kinds of strange looking grass types. Admiring their surrounding as they did, they made it to the road in due time and soon after entered the thick forest ahead, but as they entered, Rika felt a shiver crawl up her spine. At this time though she didn't really know why and just shook it off as if she had just gotten a chill.

Evin knew one side of the forest was basically a strait road that was easy to walk down and would virtually take them strait to the next city. He hoped to go this way and that the walk would only take two days. This was because as of that very morning, the supplies they now had were in serious need of replenishment and would not last much longer.

Evin knew that one side of this forest was like a very long maze with bug pokemon almost literally crawling out of the woodwork, while the other was basicly just a strait road. The maze rout he knew would have most likely taken them about a week or more to make it through. So he was sure they wouldn't be taking that rout at all as they walked for a few hours longer. Before long they came to the expected bend in the road, where they would make their choice of paths to take. But once they got close to the corner, they heard the sound of many voices. Rika felt another shiver crawl up her sides as anxiety crept over her and the others started to share in her worry from what they could hear. Then just to be safe, Evin silently ran ahead to scout around the corner to see what was going on, but he about fell over backwards from shock of what he saw.

It was what looked like an entire army of people in black uniforms from Team Rocket. All were looking around the bushes and trees like they had lost something, and the entire congregation seemed to be blocking the street for miles, all the way to the forest maze's exit.

Seeing Team Rocket barring their path, made Evin feel a mixture of fear and anger. These people were bold beyond measure to be out in such a common place in such force and in broad daylight. Casting a quick eye over the congregation, Evin believed that most of the members that were there were just the weaker grunts that were mostly only used for all the non-important tasks.

But then he saw a few that looked meaner than the rest that seemed to give orders to others every so often. Evin knew the grunts would have been thrown into disarray if he had somehow removed their leaders, but with so many grunts around he didn't know how he would ever pull off such a stunt. Right after having those thoughts, Evin began chiding himself for being a fool for forgetting an important rule of engagement, which was that he should never take on unknown numbers when he don't even know what they are capable of. It would have been a stupid disaster if he had gone out there to fight them right then, and he knew it.

Slowly and being careful not to make a single sound he backed away from the corner before running back to the others. At first as he tried to tell them what was going on he started babbling from his mixed emotions, but then after fixing himself, he finally told them the details of what he saw. Dawn was frightened when she heard how many there were. She knew that even the police and all the rangers would hesitate to try and do something about so many of them at once. Just the thought of being captured by them sent chills down everyone's spines.

So a debate of whether or not to turn back or continue through the maze instead took place. Just to be fair to the others, they called out the other pokemon and included them in this discussion. The discussion went on for about fifteen minutes before a decision was made against Evin's better judgment to head back, which was to press on despite the risk. The decision was that they would just sneak around the dangerous group to enter the maze and from there just run deeper into the forest until they were sure Team Rocket was far behind. And from there hope that by the time they came to the end of the maze that the team has moved on by then. When Evin brought up the shortage of supplies, the pokemon insisted that they could forage food from the surrounding forest to improvise. Evin wasn't sure of this plan, but he went with what the majority vote of what the others felt was the best choice.

Having decided what actions they were taking, Evin then had Rika remove the barriers on his mind since they would need any sort of heads up they could get from here on. Then Evin and Dawn returned all their pokemon to their balls except Rika, and moving cautiously, they got off the road to the far left side and quickly entered the maze part of Pinwheel forest before anyone could spot them. Once in the maze, they ran for a while to make sure they got as far away from the thugs as they could. This also presented a great opportunity for Evin to try and harness his psychic powers since he was already getting better at the others.

He could sense everything within almost a half mile. The range of this strange perception of his, seemed to have grown since the last time he felt the power in use, but on the upside he no longer felt as if he were being overwhelmed as he once did. Things appeared clear to him in every direction and he even sensed a frightened ranger hiding in the trees they had just run by, and could feel the ranger's regret at not breaking cover to tell them they shouldn't be in this forest right now.

Evin knew what dangers there were though, so he was glad the ranger didn't bother them. Evin could also tell that even the bugs were scared about what was going on, but then he also sensed that many were also feeling riled up and ready to swarm. He believed this was why Team Rocket wasn't going further in the forest. Because if Team Rocket had entered, he was sure that they would be met with an even bigger swarming army of bugs pokemon that could easily overwhelm Team Rocket's considerable force at least thirty to one.

Just as the last few member was leaving Evin's furthest sensing range, Evin grasp a few stray thoughts off a few of the grunts, that told him that a select few of the Team Rocket's leaders were inside the forest looking for something. Evin tried to dig deeper to see what the something was, but even the grunts didn't truly know what it was. So after making sure, Evin continued walking with the others as the last of the grunt's minds faded from his mind's eye sensing range altogether.

Later Evin told the others about what he had gleaned from the unsuspecting grunt members, and Dawn commented, "Whatever it is they are after, I hope they don't find it. Everything they do is always bad, and they always end up hurting a lot of other people and pokemon." Evin agreed with that and they walked on for a while longer before they found a well-protected place to pitch camp.

Just to be safe with so many undesirables around, they decided that there should be another lookout awake to help keep watch. Evin thought this was a good idea given the circumstances, even though he was mostly fully aware of their surroundings even while asleep.

He was festinated about how the bug pokemon's thoughts were so simple yet still had a hint of intelligence in them, as they went about their much simpler lives. Spazz and Aqua stayed up that night to keep watch, and enjoyed what little bit of rain made it through the tree canopy as they took periodic walks around the camp. Nothing more then a few curious bugs bothered them that night, and when morning came, the others woke to two very tired water pokemon holding their new egg between them as they enjoyed the scenery. The morning was wet and cold, and because of this, starting a breakfast fire was out of the question; so Dawn and Evin ate breakfast bars instead.

Walking was a little on the miserable side as their shoes soon became soaked, and Dawn had to often take breaks to let her feet and shoes air dry a bit along with Evin. Rika was smug as always, as all she ever had to do was wring her toes out every now and then and her fur did the rest along with being rain resistant.

The day went on this way as they walked for about a mile at a time between breaks, while the rain kept right on coming. Right as Dawn was getting ready to sit on an old rotten log as they were taking another break, a sewaddle jumped out at her infuriated that she was going to use its home as a seat. It immediately spat string shot in her face, and for a moment Dawn panicked as she blindly flailed about. Seeing Dawn like this, Piplup intervened and trounced the bug for what it was worth. After it was beat and Dawn had somewhat freed her face of the silk, Dawn captured it in a pokeball. But Evin and Rika couldn't help laughing at how ridicules Dawn now looked for a long while after, as the sticky silk had tangled in her hair and made her look ridiculous. Whenever Piplup caught them laughing or giggling about this, he often shot them with water gun to make them shut up.

Dawn on the other hand was in minor distress at getting the sticky string out of her hair, which seemed to get matted the harder she pulled sometimes. Getting all of it out of her hair took some time and effort, but soon with the help of a comb and hand held mirror she was string shot free. But it did leave her feeling a little icky and that coupled with the accumulated days of sweat from the training they had been doing, all she really wanted now was a nice hot shower or bath. The thought of having a pokemon like sewaddle around though also gave Dawn some ideas. With this kind of a pokemon with them, they could now do repairs to ripped cloths once it eventually evolved. She also loved to dress up her pokemon; and a pokemon that was good at making cloths was a perfect match for her.

They made camp soon after that and Herdier and Servine took the watch for the night. With everything being damp or wet and the humidity being extremely high, feeling comfortable inside the tent just wasn't possible. The tent itself was waterproof and didn't let moisture though its walls. But even then, no one was completely dry before entering. So as they had finally warmed up a bit and the moisture tried to evaporate, it couldn't escape the confines of the tent and just made things feel muggy for all of them.

The next day after they had packed camp again, the skies opened up and just dumped nonstop buckets of rain on the forest and forced them to take cover. Evin was somewhat worried about how much rain there was, and this was because he didn't know the landscape or where the water drained. The last thing in the world he ever wanted to try and survive was a flash flood, and being that he knew they were at risk of just that, he got everyone to look for higher ground. The bulge of a hill soon came into sight and they wasted not time as they trudged up to the very top and pitched camp under the gigantic tree that had dominion of this hilltop.

Camp was made and Dawn, Rika and Evin had made themselves at home inside the tent. Piplup, Aqua, and Spazz stayed outside to enjoyed themselves and this was the kind of day that every water pokemon dreamed of. They splashed around had fun and did all sorts of things as they looked for berries, while Evin and the others huddled in the waterproof tent to keep warm. The next day wasn't much better, but their supplies were already dangerously low, so they needed to keep moving. They ended up having to backtrack so they could find the somewhat recognizable main path, but soon after locating it, they began a wet miserable trudging force march in the heavy rain.

Evin knew there was a legendary in this forest, but also knew it was on the other side of that army that was blocking the road, and then there was the fact that it also wouldn't be caught without a big fight. So he let the knowledge slide for now, and the next day after that was just as boring and miserable. Throughout this though they were all much more glad just to be far away from those goons on the main road; so no one complained too much about being miserable.

On their sixth day in this maze, they woke to the cold rainy sound of the trees being tussled by the wind, which landed a large pool's worth of water right on their camp. Fortunately the big tent they were in held up to the sudden slam of water, but they could now see some water lapping at the zipper trying to get in. So being worried about possibly getting washed away by flood water, they packed the inside of the tent in a hurry and carefully exited. Before long the tent was shaken off and stored and they were once again on the move through the cold wet slushy grass.

This was now the third day of heavy rain as the trudging march continued. They were all beginning to feel a bit sick from this exposure to the elements, but there wasn't much they could do about it. It was about nine o'clock that morning as they were walking when Evin sensed something wrong up ahead. The bugs were restless and the forest was still, other then the rain as it became uncommonly quiet.

Evin could now sense two human minds along with four pokemon all chasing another pokemon that was running in fear. From the dark nature of the thoughts of the six chasing the other, Evin could tell that the pursuers must be the members of Team Rocket or another team just like them, as they chased the scared pokemon with the single minded interest of capturing it.

Evin told the others what he was sensing and had everyone hide, though he took position behind a tree on the main path, while the others hid in the trees to the side of the open area. Evin could sense that the little pokemon they were chasing was tired from days of running, and trying to run and hide with every last ounce of energy it had left.

He also sensed the thoughts of smug confidence in the human's and their pokemon, as they knew this chase was almost done. But Evin wasn't going to have any of that, and he planed on either hiding the pokemon himself, or strait out beating the crap out of the men chasing it.

They were now coming within the last ten yards of Evin's position, when he sensed that the little pokemon sensed him. His curiosity made him look around the side of the tree just in time to see a blur of black fur, before he heard a loud telepathic "Save me!" and then felt the small furry body tackle him on the face, as it scrambled about for a hiding place and dived down his jacket.

The shock of having something cold and wet bolt inside his jacket was hard to ignore, and he still didn't know what the pokemon was. But just then it didn't matter, as the Team Rocket executives came into view. Evin knew from the thoughts of the two mightyena, that hiding was out of the question, for they could still smell the pokemon they were after and that the murkrow and sneasel, would be checking up high. Evin didn't see a peaceful way out of this, so communicating with Dawn and Rika with his aura and psychic powers, he formed a quick plan with them.

He was going to show himself and start a conversation to keep them distracted so they could sneak behind them, and that they were not to help him if he was attacked before they were able to attack the trainers directly.

Just as the mightyena neared the tree Evin was at, he stepped out. Being that the little pokemon in his jacket didn't know what he planned to do, it became extremely distressed in this situation. Evin felt the pokemon sift inside his jacket and felt its little claws scratch him a bit, but stood firm as the rockets stopped a ways in front of him.

The mighyena and the executives froze when they saw him, and the sneasel landed on the ground behind the mightyena, while the murkrow came down and hovered above the sneasel. The rocket executives yelled at Evin to push off before they take his pokemon and make him regret ever laying eyes on them. But Evin's response was to tell them to leave the forest, and just for added effect, he made his eyes glow ominously with psychic power. But all they did was laugh and one of the mightyena charged. Evin shot the dog with a quickly charged aura sphere before it even cleared half the distance, and got the message across that he meant business.

The laughter from the executives faded as the mighyena fell to the ground at their feet unconscious, and the others all braced themselves for the unknown. With that, one of the executives then yelled in a deadly serious tone, "Your getting annoying whelp. I don't know how you did that, but if you don't get out of our way now, I'll give You something to really fear and use some real forceful persuasion if you want to get rough." Evin took a challenging stance as he put one hand in front of him just as he sensed Dawn and Rika get into the position they needed, and then said, "Bring it on if you dare."

His confidence had somewhat caught the rockets off guard, and for a moment they wondered if this was a good idea. But they regained their own cocky confidence again soon after, and the other rocket yelled, "Gettem!" And with that Evin hit the murkrow with an aura sphere and then used another on the other mightyena. The sneasel disappeared, and the executives hesitated with pokeballs in hand.

With Piplup, Dawn called for water gun, and Rika shot the other man with an aura sphere, which hit the men and laid them flat on the muddy ground stunned. Evin took advantage of this and using his developing psychic abilities, he stopped the two humans from being able to get back up or move, but just then the sneasel appeared behind him and used an ice punch on the back of his right side in the ribs.

Evin gave a howl as he felt like an icy cold frozen spear had stabbed him, and used his left hand to let Spazz out of his ball and told him to attack the sneasel with aqua tail. The sneasel jumped out of the way though and even though Evin helped Spazz with calling attacks, he could see the ice dark type pokemon was too fast. But then the trees shook as the wind and rain picked up more and Spazz's special ability that gave him a speed boost in the rain kicked him into high gear.

Evin let Aqua out as well, so she could protect him while he concentrate on the human executives that he still had bound, while Dawn and Rika were trying to get passed the murkrow that had recovered, and was now guarding the two men. Evin couldn't heal the cold place on his side till he quit using his other abilities; so all he could do was wait till Dawn and Rika downed the dark bird, which took annoyingly longer then he first though it should have.

Once all the executive's pokeballs were secured, along with their hands and feet in ropes, Aqua went to help Spazz and they finished their job with the sneasel with well-timed attacks and maneuvering. The men lay in the soggy wet grass as Evin finally released his hold of them and then gripped his side for a few minutes, as he healed a broken rib and the partly frozen flesh around it.

The few pokemon of the executives that had already been out that they beat, told Evin one thing as they were put in the balls, and that was that he was glad he stopped them before they could release the others. He was sure that the other pokemon had to be the executive's slower power houses. While tied up the Executives called Evin a freak among other things, and Evin just walked up and punched one in the face and made them shut their noisy mouths.

Evin loathed letting these two live after he read their minds and could see the thoughts they were having as they plotted their revenge. The revenge they had in mind consisted of how they were going to spread the word of him and his abilities to the higher-ups and the rest of their organization, and put every ounce of their time and money into chasing him down and make him regret ever crossing them. Evin then tried something he hadn't before and waved a hand over their faces and watched their eyes roll backwards as their heads lulled to their sides as they fell asleep.

Evin looked at his hand for a moment then smiled and thought (I really need to invest more time in myself now.) Evin then withdrew Spazz and Aqua to their balls. Rika walked up to Evin and nodded towards the bulge in his coat. Evin then said, "Ok you can come out now, they are knocked out." But the telepathic voice of the little pokemon then said, "I don't want to, its warm in here." Evin let his shoulder drop as he became exasperated, while the others laughed and Dawn said, "I think you got a new friend there." then giggled.

Evin felt the pokemon move up to the neck of his coat as it stuck its head out, and Dawn said, "Wow, it's a zorua; they are like, super unbelievably rare. I wonder why Team rocket is after one, or why they waned it so bad. It's not a legendary. Oh but it looks so cute on you Evin." and she giggled more.

Zorua then spoke up and said, "Those bad men wanted to use me for something, but when I refused, they attacked me, and chased me from my home. I've been running from them for weeks and they still manage to keep finding me." Evin still couldn't see the pokemon though, so he unzipped part of his jacket and pulled it out. When he did, he found that it was another shiny pokemon, but was also a she.

He didn't need to think too hard about why Team Rocket would want her; it was simple, they wanted to breed her so they could get rich, and he also knew a Zoroark's abilities could cause some major havoc in any city. It was a bit of a cruel thought to make a pokemon do such a things, as he remembered how intelligent they were. But when it came to breeding, Evin knew similar things happened to all kinds of animals back in his world like that, but they were not as intelligent as a pokemon, so it just ended up just seeming to be wrong.

Zorua quickly scrambled back into his jacket right then and said, "Its cold and wet out there." And to that Evin then rebuked and said, "But you're already wet and now your getting the inside of my jacket wet too!" Both Dawn and Rika laughed again and the little zorua snickered in her cozy little place in his jacket.

Evin then said, "What do you plan to do then? You cant stay in my jacket all the time." And to Evin's obvious annoyance the little fox replied, "Why not?" Evin tossed up his hands, zipped up he jacket and grumbled a little before saying as if nothing was wrong to the others, "Shall we?" They then tied the rockets to a tree and put all the executive's pokemon and equipment into their own bags, leaving the rockets in only their cloths.

Dawn had some vengeful thoughts though of removing those too, to further their embarrassment for when they were finally found, and asked Evin what he thought. He obviously liked the idea because it would make them look like fools, and even worst to their superiors, which would also make them the laughing stock of the rest of their organization. So they took the pants and boxers of the two men, tossed the cloths a good distance away in the trees and then continued on their way as the rain finally stopped.

Dawn was in a bubbly happy mood now after that as they walked, and all the while Evin could feel the emotions of the little fox hiding in his jacket, slowly winding down before she virtually passed out. He sensed that she had been sleep and hunger depraved for a long time before this, which made him wonder just how far they could have been chasing her. But for now he just let her rest and focused on what lie ahead.

That night, as they made camp off the main trail even as the little zorua was still sound asleep, the rain finally lightened up a bit and water finally quit dumping through the thick roof the trees made so much. As they settled into the tent for the night, Evin finally removed his jacket and set the little fox between his and Dawn's sleeping bags. He covered her with some extra covers just so she wouldn't get cold, but just being away from his body heat made her shake a bit. Shadow was on watch duty outside with Cilia, who still tried to ignore him as he every now and then tried to be friendly with her. But after a while, he got tired of that, and his anger began getting the better of him.

He was becoming sick and tired of trying to get her to like him with no success, and his mind began wandering in dark places as he began contemplated doing something he might regret. Then within his mind he heard Evin say in a harsh tone, "Don't Even finish those thoughts! If you want her, give her the time she needs to come around. I'm certain that if you just bide your time she will warm up to you, and also if Zorua joins us she might even consider you. But if you do what you were thinking of doing, she will without a doubt hate you forever, and I will put you in your ball and store you in a pc where you will never see the light of day or the moon ever again, because I will never take you out."

Evin's words were clear and final, which made Shadow feel like there was a shadow of doom looming over him. He wanted to take Cilia right then and there so bad it was pathetic, but after Evin's warning, he was now too scared to cross his master's orders, because he knew Evin wasn't joking.

So he decided on a new tact that he knew Evin wouldn't have a problem with. He pretended to change places and brushed passed Cilia with a warm rub as he continued walking, making sure he got her attention and that she got a glimpse of his very male parts below his tail as he sauntered over to his new spot, then stretched and laid down. Cilia blushed at how seductive he looked during that little show, but wasn't about to go soft on him, so she turned away.

This didn't erase what she had just seen though, and she had to put her paws over her head with her eyes closed just to obliterate the image from her mind. Shadow thought as much would happen, but now the message was unmistakably clear that he was interested in her from the start, while Cilia just battled her own thoughts for the rest of the night.

Morning came, and Evin found their visitor in his sleeping bag under his shirt sleeping on his bare belly. He could feel her cold little front paws just under the rim of his boxers and he thought, (When the hell did she move?!) as his face got hot from embarrassment. But then his momentary embarrassment faded as he decided she must have only got there for the warmth.

When he sat up to remove her however, she seemed to unconsciously dig in further and her head nuzzled under the elastic band of his boxers before he could catch her. He went bug eyed for a moment before he could get his hands on her, and she dived inside his underwear. Evin about freaked out from having the little fox moving in his boxers, but he restrained his voice so he didn't startle everyone awake.
