Katherine Goody is an oddity. She is the daughter of two races and it shows. Kathy has her father's dark brown eyes, and his fire orange hair, only she kept it short at the top. Though her face was haloed by his stripes around her face, her mother's physical stature defined her character. She ran down the side walks with great speed, she always prefured running over riding a bike. It earned her second place in the high school track, though her half breed denied her the first prize she didn't care.
It was difficult to categorize Katherine in the Anthromorphs. Her parents were legally labeled as a tiger and cheetah, but she was categorized as "other". Her Cheetah like stature was more dominate than her tiger. It was not enough to legally label her as such. Despite her mixed breed it was nothing the United Nations hasn't seen before. She was just one of the countless trillions in the nation who were born from mixed parents. Granted that the majority preferred to remain with their own kind, it was still a common sight to see an Anthromorph mix with either a human or a Morph of a different species.
Katherine returned to the Beach Street market on the morning, as she did every day like so many others. Though today was a Sunday, that ment she was just there to relax and enjoy the sites. Though, the sky showed an oncoming storm cloud over head. Kathy could smell the inevitable rainfall about to hit the market.
Beach Street market was as a large shop center, so large that it was broken down into districts. The South District was the main entrance and greeting center. From there the street branched off into five different sections. The North, East, West and Center Districts. The North District was the housing blocks for the employees and store managers. As well as a full Emergency center from Hospital to security enforcement and disaster response. The East was the food court where at least every culture could be found for a unique flavor. Some were restaurants that were open to all customers, others required a two week advanced reservation. Amongst the orders were fast food vendors for those who had to go and others offered an outdoors dinning. The West was the unemployment hub, this was where all the activity for Beach Street took place. This was where people gathered to check on all available job openings across the Nation. Be it a janitor opening for the nearest space station, to the Hauler operators on Luna. When it was built, one news article described it as "...bussier than the stock market...". Which was true. Though rather than hordes of the unemployed howling like mad men, they all waited patiently to see what opened. On some days, the manager of some major task force would arrive asking for any able bodies, now THAT was excitement. Other times it was like today, quiet and slow. All of the major jobs were asking for experience in fields no one here could fill.
It was clean from the buildings to the roads and always busy. She could see the crowds gathering at the unemployment square, no doubt searching for any available openings in the market and off world. At the Center of Beach Street was the clock tower, surrounded by all of the main shops and chains from around the Nation. That was where Kathy was bound for today.
BONG...BONG...
The clock rang out across the market at twelve thirty. Katherine was on her way to meet up with an old friend.
She arrived at the Beach Ggame store. There, standing behind his cashier's desk was David. A dark haired man in his late twenties handing off another product to a kid at nine years old. He turned and saw Kathy walk in through the door.
"Kathy." He smiled, running to her with a hug that lfted her off the ground.
She huffed from the embrace, "What has you so excited?"
"I'll tell you later, right now I'm starving." He said, putting her down.
They had left the Ggame just two minutes ago and arrived at their usual restaraunt, at the East District. They sat at a window booth, just as the rain started to come down.
Kathy leaned in from her end of the table, she had figured out why David was so chipper in the game shop.
"So, you finally asked him out?" She whispered.
"Who?? Brandon?" He asked.
"Who else have you been drooling over? So, did you?"
David massaged his water glass, "Actually, no. He asked me out."
"Oh that's great." She smiled, her feline teeth almost exposed. "You said yes, right?"
"Yeah, he's taking me out next Sunday."
"Any plans?"
"He's taking me to the super bowl. After that, who knows?"
"Aw, that's sweet. Just keep a condom handy."
"Yeah, yeah shut up. Not like I can get knocked up anyway."
David browsed through the menu at hand. Kathy knew it was his way of avoiding the topic, he always ordered the same thing.
"Not yet at least." She smirked. "They made furries after all. Whose to say they can't find ways to get guys pregnant?"
"Maybe, but I'm not ready to start fart'n out babies just yet. That's your job."
They caught up at the table, had their lunch. The rain cleared at last and were soon on they were off. For desert they enjoyed a little yogurt stand located at the edge of East. Kathy was licking the last of her serving from the spoon when David spoke up.
"You check any of the stores here for postings?"
"Every damn day." She replied. "They all say the same thing, no openings, not hiring, etcetera, etcetera."
"Have you checked the West posts?"
"Yeah but...I'm not all that keen on mining space rocks or cleaning out a toilet right now."
David said nothing and only gave a sympathetic hum. He turned in his seat, checking the clock tower in the distance.
"You need to head back soon?" She asked.
"Nah, not for another five minutes. Besides, kind of a slow day, today. Not many people buying games right now." He cleaned his lips with the napkin then stuffed it in his empty Styrofoam cup.
"You wanna go see Brandon?" She asked, her tail swaying in the air behind her.
David licked his lips, cleaning the stray patch of chocolate syrup. "Nah, I don't want him thinking I'm stalking on my breaks. I haven't had a real date in so long I don't want to screw it up."
"I thought about enlisting." Kathy broke out at last. David staired at her, stupefied before speaking.
"Wow. That came out of no where."
"Well I'm not getting any work here." She stretched out her arms, displaying the Beach Street Market around her. "I'm sure not a techy or a Splicer for the big pay checks. Why not enlist?"
"So...you wanna be a local militia or..."
"Space Marine." She said at length, flexing her thin arms to show off her muscles. Though it was hard to see any kind of buldge through the fur.
"You realize the corp only take Pure Bloods?" He asked.
"I'm a pure blood." David raised an eye brow, "Now really. My Dad's a pure Tiger Morph and my Mom's a pure Cheetah Morph."
"But you're neither, you're a hybrid."
"Actually, it's considered 'Other'." She used air quotes around the use of the word.
"I think you need to reconsider."
"About the marines?"
"That and enlisting. Have you talked with your parents about it?"
"Well...no. But I can't tell them, they'd freak out."
"More than the General's letter and care package they get in the mail if you're Kay Eye Aye?"
