What Friends are For -Ch. 1 New Home

Well everybody I'm back again with my longest story to date and I think the best one yet. Don't get the names confused this is a different Cody than in 'Wolf's Life'. I just love the name and will probably have at least one of them in every story I write. There are a lot of characters in this one so pay attention. Please comment after you're done reading and feel free to leave advice as well as suggestions. Its how I improve.

Cody was awake by the alarm clock's third ring. His brown paw silently hit the snooze button and the wolf stood with a sigh. The room was almost empty now, because today the Scott family made its move to another city. It only contained a bunk bed and a night stand now. His brother older brother, Kevin, was still asleep on the top bunk and only awoke after a rough shake from the younger wolf. "What do you want?" he growled down to Cody.

"Stop calling me that I'm almost fourteen now" the younger wolf barked as he attempted to get his jeans on.

"Yeah buy I'm sixteen so your still be the pup" Kevin retorted quickly with his tongue stuck out. Cody growled again, but managed to finish getting dressed without tackling his older sibling. He walked outside the room and found his parents standing there waiting.

Samantha Wright gave Cody a small smile as he entered. Cody was short for his age, but not by much, and he was relatively thin as well. He was the only son that had gained her soft reddish-brown fur and out of all her sons he was the one that she was closest with. He was quickly growing up and would be in High School by the end of the summer. It was always sad how fast pups grew up so fast.

"Stop fighting with your older brother Cody" Jack Wright ordered softly "besides I don't want you all fighting the whole drive there" Cody's father was a tall, strong wolf. His dark grey fur shone elegantly with only the slightest hints of white showing through. The young wolf always looked up to him with great love and respect, as most boys say their fathers.

"Sorry dad but Kevin started it" Cody pointed to his brother who'd just emerged from the bedroom, pulling his shirt down over his head.

"You woke me up punk" Kevin growled still angry at his rude awakening. "So dad when we leaving?"

"Stop fighting" their father growled "Cody you'll be driving with your mother and Nick's driving you up Kevin, I'll be right behind you two with my car since the truck already delivered all the furniture two days ago" This made Cody smile, he hated long car drives with his older brothers, especially Kevin who always picked on him for being the runt. "You two should go now and we'll meet you there" Jack said turning to Cody's mother.

"Ok I'll see you then" she said turning to kiss the wolf briefly before grabbing her car keys off the counter. "Let's go kiddo" Cody smiled and followed his mother outside to the red minivan waiting in the driveway. He opened the passenger side door as he mother got into her respective side. The rest of the van was packed full of boxes which mostly contained clothes and personal possessions belonging to different members of the family. They had a lot of stuff and no room to put it all, hence the move. It also meant that Cody had to leave all of his friends behind, but he'd already decided that he could make new friends.

"How long until we get there mom?" he yawned as she started the van and buckled her seat belt. Cody did the same with his own belt and waited for his mother to answer.

"You might want to take a nap Cody" he started "it'll probably be about a four hour drive" The younger wolf groaned and tried to take her advice because he knew that it would just get boring listening to the radio and he was still tired after all. They'd only just got onto the highway before the youth had drifted off to sleep. Sam laughed quietly, her son always fell asleep quickly and she envied him for that. She turned the radio down and drove silently, humming softly to low music playing.

With a yawn, Cody woke up for the second time that day. They were driving down a long road that seemed surrounded by fields of green. It was now well past noon which meant they should be at the new house soon.

"Awake already?" his mother smiled "I had my money on you being out for the entire trip" she giggled when her son crossed his arms and frowned "Aw don't get upset kiddo I was only kidding"

"I know mom" Cody looked up, his smile returning "so how far are we now?"

"About twenty minutes were almost there"

"How far is dad?" Cody continued to question.

"He just called and said that they were just behind us but still about an hour behind us and in the meantime you can start making some new friends" Cody rolled his eyes and his mother giggled again "I bet you'll be the most popular kid in the neighborhood before you now it"

How many kids live there anyway?" Cody asked hoping for a large number.

"Well it's quite a large neighborhood, but there is a nice fox family with a boy your age who will be our next door neighbors and then another coyote family who will live on the other side. They also have a son your age"

"Cool I hope they're fun" the young wolf exclaimed with a grin on his face.

"I only met the foxes and I thought they were very nice" she said "the boy loves music and I'm pretty sure he plays guitar"

"Cool" Cody replied, it sounded like it wouldn't be such a bad place to live. The rest of the drive went by quickly and soon they were in the suburbs of the Scott family's new home. The town was called North Valley and it didn't seem like a bad place at all, full of trees and parks and nice little houses. There were indeed kids of all ages playing outside and in the streets. After a few minutes the two pulled into a driveway and Cody was amazed at the house. It was at least double the size of their old home and the yard was big and green, Cody could only guess that the backyard was equally as large.

"Wow mom it's huge!" Cody exclaimed as they left the car and ran to the backyard. It even had a huge wooden porch. The wolf ran around to his mother who was unlocking the front door. The younger wolf walked into the house and marveled at the mere size of the place. Almost all of the furniture was already moved into the entrance hallway, but the beds were supposedly already in each room.

"Guess what" his mother said smiling behind him.

"What?"

"You get the first choice at a bedroom" she happily replied "any room except for the master, got it?" Cody howled with excitement and ran up the stairs. She just laughed and let the boy have his moment.

Cody found the upstairs just as large as the first floor. It had three bedrooms and a bathroom. The first two bedrooms were exactly the same, eight feet by ten with a small closet and window. The third bedroom was almost exactly the same, but the wall had a large inset ledge in front of the window. Cushions were already on it and looked like a nice place to sit. He loved it anyway and it was the closest room to the bathroom. This room was his. He returned to the first floor and started helping take boxes in from the van. Cody moved all of his brothers' boxes into the living room while moving his own into his room.

"Cody while I put the kitchen together why don't you go outside and make some friends" his mother called from inside the kitchen.

"Ok mom!" Cody called back and went outside. He at least decided to check out the neighborhood. It wasn't like it would be hard to meet some people, but he always was a shy wolf. His tail hung low while he walked down the sidewalk. Out of all the kids playing in the streets almost none of them were Cody's age. Cody reached the street corner and sighed.

"Heads up!" A voice yelled and suddenly a Frisbee came out of no where and nailed the wolf in the face. Cody yelped and was on the ground, rubbing his stinging muzzle. A few furs came running over and stood above him.

"Are you ok man?" a fox kneeled down beside his face. The fox was about the same height as Cody and had a deep reddish-orange coat of fur. His paws and tail tip were black like they'd been dipped in paint and his ear tips shared the same coloring. The fox's eyes were deep brown that shined in the sunlight.

"I-I think so" Cody replied his with his head still spinning.

"Good" a husky said offering a hand. Cody took it and was helped onto his feet. "Who are you anyway I haven't seen you around before" The husky was the tallest of the bunch and had a fine black coat of fur with patches of white covering his face, chest, and legs. His eyes were a gleaming blue and the top half of his head was covered by a blue backwards baseball cap.

"My names Cody I just moved in"

"Oh you moved into the Wright family house" the fox said with a smile "I guess you're my new neighbor"

"Oh cool I'm on your other side" the coyote said "I'm Jake and the mutts name is Terry" The coyote was the second tallest and had a tan coat of fur that most of the species shared. He was thin and had amber eyes. The statement made the husky growl and tackle Jake and the two were rolling around on the ground kicking and yelping. The fox didn't even seem to care about his two friends trying to kill each other.

"Well I'm Max" the fox said shaking Cody's paw "how long have you been in town?"

"About twenty minutes"

"Cool so you sure you're ok?" Max asked again.

"Yeah" Cody said shaking his head and dusting off his back.

"Good you wanna hang out with us?" the coyote asked with a footpaw jammed against his face and his own paw holding the husky's face away from his.

"Sure" Cody said happily "much better than unpacking" The two had stopped fighting and were searching for the Frisbee that had bounced of his head. After finding it they threw the disk to Max. Soon the four of them were all chasing the disk around the neighborhood, tails wagging behind them. After almost an hour of the sport Terry gave the thing a weird throw and it went sailing above Cody's head.

"Sorry Cody I'll get it" The husky barked but Cody was already on his way after the thing.

"It was kinda funny Cody" Max said patting the wolf on the back.

"By the way do you play any kind of instrument?" Terry asked hopefully.

"Because we've been looking for a bass player ever since Harry Wright moved out" Jake replied "who would have thought that the kid who moved in would play"

"You guys are in a band?" Cody asked while the group walked back towards his house.

"It was amazing" Cody answered while trying to clean himself up. Satisfied with the job he did the wolf pulled his boxers back on and laid down.

"Good to hear" Max said with a smile "you sure look tired there"

"Yeah and my tailhole kinda stings"

"You'll get used to it" Jake laughed while cleaning himself. "But for now let's get some sleep and maybe in the morning we can have a little more fun"

"We'll see" Cody laughed throwing the coyote a pillow. It only took a few moments for Cody to get comfortable and fall asleep and his new friends laughed. They got ready for bed themselves and chatted briefly before drifting off themselves.

"Cody's gonna be pretty popular in the neighborhood don't you think" Max smirked.

"Yeah tomorrow we should introduce him to the otters" Terry giggled "or maybe Cougar"

"He's out of town for the rest of the month remember" Jake replied.

"That's ok Cody can wait to meet him anyway" Max yawned "I think he'll enjoy meeting Leon or the otters"

"Tomorrow will sure be fun" Terry said before drifting off to sleep himself. The other two soon followed suit and the room was filled with quiet snores. Cody was smiling and dreaming of days to come that he could spend with his new friends.

Well there you have it. I really hope you enjoyed reading this as much as I did writing it. It may seem unrealistic at times because Cody was so willing to get 'yiffed' by almost complete strangers but all of you look me in the eye and say you haven't done some stupid things to make people like you. And also relax as you can tell the wolf liked it.
