Escape! ...or is it?
(Yeah, really quick chapter update I know, but I've nothing to do while on a 'vacation' in the big city. So this is the best way to pass the time here. .-.)
Guardians Awakened:
Chapter Six: Escape
"What!?" Sain looked up from packing Cye's bullet wound.
"Yeah, I know. It's like god damned déjà vu." Alyx shook his head, tossing Cye his mp7.
Cye caught it and flinched, "That's fine Sain. It'll keep me from bleeding to death at least. You two do need to disappear though." He sighed and handed Sain a slip of paper, "My personal number if you guys need anything. And here, you guys'll need this more than me." He also gave Sain his SMG back, "I still don't really know what's going on, but I hope it works out for you two."
"What about you? You're not gonna come with us?" Alyx asked concerned.
Cye laughed, "I'm a general and I've been shot, I think I'll be fine man. I expect to see you back on the homeworld soon!"
Alyx laughed and shook his head as Sain grabbed the second duffel bag. The sirens were loud now and right outside the building he glanced at Sain who pointed up. Alyx nodded and they slipped out of the hotel room.
Alyx heard the shouts and footfalls of the enforcers downstairs and he and Sain started up the stairs to the roof. He glanced down the stairwell briefly, there were at least twenty men all armed to the teeth, local swat probably. Sain took the lead and took the stairs in leaps and bounds flaring her wings to gain extra ground.
Alyx stayed right on her heels until they made it up to the top; the door was locked of course, but a single kick from Alyx knocked it open. The pair stepped out onto the roof and glanced around, their only way away from the building was either the roof tops of the surrounding buildings or the sky. With the latter they'd definitely be spotted. Sain took a sprinting start and jumped off the roof to a building behind the hotel her wings flaring to carry her the last few feet over.
Alyx ran and jumped pulling his wings open to catch the updraft between the buildings. He heard a shout from the ground level and flinched inwardly hoping he hadn't been spotted. The gunfire that followed destroyed that hope as he reached the other building. Sain was already halfway across the next roof as more gunfire followed Alyx, he stumbled a bit as he feet touched the roof and he ran as fast as his legs could carry him.
"We need to get down to the ground!" He shouted at Sain who nodded stopping at the edge of the second roof.
She looked down and stepped off the roof falling out of Alyx's sight and he dived over, following her the seven or so stories down. They both back winged strongly slowing their descent so the collision with the concrete below wasn't lethal. It still hurt; the solid feeling of ground running through their skeletons as they touched down. Alyx pointed down the alleyway away from the roof and the pair took off at a full sprint. They rounded the corner as Alyx heard another shout followed by a burst of rifle fire, AK's from the distinct sound. He also heard the screech of tires and cursed.
"We could make a stand to try and deter them." Sain shouted from behind him.
Alyx shook his head and darted between to shops and out across the road, "No! We're not killing any of them! They're just doing their jobs." He shouted back as Sain followed across the road jumping a small compact car that about ran her over.
The honking of the compact followed them down the next alley as Sain cackled madly behind Alyx. Another two or three turns and alleys later they came to a halt Sain leaning over her hands on her knees panting.
"We... need... a car." She panted out.
Alyx managed a laugh, panting himself, "Out of shape?" He chuckled at Sain's glare and cocked his head listening to the sirens. He sighed, "However I agree." He ran his tongue around the inside of his dry mouth, "What're you thinking?"
Sain pointed down the alley, "I think there's a parking lot at the end of this alley." She stopped listening to the sirens, "Why aren't they getting closer?"
Alyx shrugged, "We went in a big 'U' shape, and they may not have seen us going this way."
Sain drew herself upright, "Well, let's go car shopping." The pair walked casually to the other side of the alley.
Indeed there was a parking lot half full of cars like Sain had thought. Alyx looked around and nodded towards an older sports car.
"The Nissan over there. It shouldn't have too much security built into it and it should be rather fast if we need it."
Sain nodded walking over towards the little two-door, "I always feel bad stealing from civilians."
Alyx shrugged, "As long as we don't wreck it, we'll leave it somewhere for the police to find, they'll get it back soon enough."
Sain sighed nodding as she dug her claws into the crack between the door and the body of the car. With a creak of metal something within the door broke and she pulled the handle the door opening easily. She unlocked the passenger door and Alyx climbed in setting their duffel bags and firearms in the back seat. He turned back to the front and noticed Sain had the sun visor down with an odd look on her face.
"What?" He asked her.
Sain held up a keychain, "Who leaves keys in their car?" She put the one labeled 'Nissan' into the ignition and the car rumbled to life. From the sound of the engine this was somebody's pride and joy.
Sain shrugged, "It's never been that easy to steal one of these."
Alyx raised an eyeridge as Sain backed out of the parking space and drove to the entrance of the lot. "How many cars have you stolen?"
"This is the seventh including the two from yesterday." She shrugged, "Remember when the GC's used to do undercover ops?"
Alyx nodded, "Those were the days." He laughed a memory replaying in his head, "I seem to remember you drifting a double-decker bus around a curve to run one of our targets off the road."
Sain laughed hard, "Oh yeah! The London job." She chuckled, "I remember that, scared myself shitless when the traction disappeared in the back."
The pair went quiet as a police cruiser went flying by down the road. Sain sighed turning the car eastward deciding it was best to get out of the city.
"Damn it!" She suddenly cursed.
Alyx jumped, "What? What is it?" He looked around afraid that they'd been spotted.
Sain motioned vaguely, "We didn't shift."
Alyx looked down and cursed realizing they both looked like themselves, "Hopefully nobody recognized us." He shifted into a human form and a few seconds later Sain sighed.
"Fuck it. I'm tired of hiding my identity." She murmured quietly.
Alyx looked at her for a moment before shrugging and shifting back to himself, "As you see fit." He grinned, "As proven earlier though, we do better with our wings rather than without."
Sain nodded and flinched as another police cruiser came flying up behind them siren blaring and lights flashing. Sain pulled to the side of the road slowing down hoping the officer would just pass them, but he didn't. She glanced at Alyx who shrugged and brought the car to a stop.
"Just stay calm." Alyx murmured quietly.
He smiled as the officer simply stepped out of the vehicle and started walking towards theirs, "See? If he thought we were related to the hotel he would've pulled his gun out right then." He winked at Sain who rolled the window down as the officer reached the window.
"Can I see your license and registration?" He asked sounding bored.
Alyx opened the dashboard hoping the registration card was inside. He smiled finding it and handed it to Sain who passed it to the officer.
"And your license?" The officer queried.
Sain made a face, "It's in my other pants in the duffel bag in the back." She turned opening the bag carefully trying to keep the firearms within concealed as she dug for her wallet.
The officer noticed the TKIV and backed away from the car reaching for his gun, but then Sain pulled her wallet from the bag and sat back forwards in the seat. The officer relaxed for a moment but his hand didn't leave his gun as he accepted Sain's license.
"Do you have a permit for those weapons?" He asked sounding nervous now.
Alyx laughed from the other side of the car and adopting an African accident answered, "No she doesn't. Those are mine. I have the proper papers for them."
The officer sighed, "Well, I'm going to need those too."
Alyx surrendered his firearms papers to the officer and sat back into his seat.
"I'm going to go run these through, I'll be right back." The officer assured them.
Sain leaned back closing her eyes uttering a draconic oath as the officer stepped back into his patrol car. "You think this car is already reported?" She asked nervously.
Alyx shook his head, "I doubt it, we stole it from a factory, and if I'm not mistaken the morning shift started an hour or so ago. We'll have at least until lunchtime before it's reported."
Sain nodded not looking very reassured. "This is ridiculous. I'm more nervous than that last mission in the aircraft factory. Even though we both almost died there, this is torture."
Alyx shrugged, "Even if he finds something worth trying to apprehend us for I know you're a better driver than him."
Sain looked sidelong at him, "I may be a bit rusty love. And I'd rather not end up in a ditch."
Alyx shrugged looking in the side mirror as the officer got back out of his car. He walked back up to the Nissan and handed back the registration, drivers' license and firearms permit.
"May I ask why you're driving Mr. David Long's vehicle?" the officer asked casually.
Sain laughed, "He's letting us borrow it temporarily." She smiled at the officer, "I've always wanted one of these but I wanted a chance to drive one before I bought another like it."
The officer shrugged and handed a yellow ticket to Sain, "Well, get that headlight fixed. Next time it'll be a ticket. You two have a nice day."
The officer walked back to his car and drove off down the road.
Sain let out a huge sigh, "Well, those fake ID's you made after the explosion seem to work."
Alyx laughed, "I told you they would." He chuckled as Sain pulled back onto the road.
She looked over at him and sighed softly, "You're different ever since your memory started coming back."
Alyx was unsure how to respond to her observation, he watched the cityscape roll by quietly for a minute before responding, "Is that a bad thing?"
Sain shrugged, "Doesn't matter."
"Yes it does." Alyx stated turning in his seat to face her.
Sain glanced at him momentarily before looking back at the road. She stopped at a pedestrian crossing as a wolf and her two children crossed the road in front of them. After they'd crossed the road and she'd started moving again Sain answered, "It's not bad, just different." She glanced at him, "I'm just wondering if I gave my colors to the wrong male."
Alyx sat back in his seat and was silent. He was confused to say the least.
Sain looked over at him once or twice in the next few minutes, she sighed heavily, "Maybe that's not what I meant. Don't turn into someone I can't love okay?"
Alyx nodded still not sure or really wanting to say anything. They reached the city limits and then crossed out into the countryside, but in front of them was a roadblock.
Sain groaned slowing the car down, "Let's see if you're I.D.'s hold up again eh?"
Alyx shook his head and pointed; the officers and military personnel were scrambling behind their vehicles and aiming their weapons at the Nissan coming down the road. "I think they already know who we are."
The windshield cracked in a corner, the fissures spider webbing across the glass, "Shit!" Sain stomped on the gas, the little six cylinder screaming as the car picked up speed towards the roadblock. Another bullet sparked through the passenger side window, shattering it as Alyx flinched reaching into the back to grab the little SMG Cye had given them. He brought it forward and fired upon the locals, not aiming to kill but rather just pulling off warning shots.
Sain wrenched the steering wheel to the side and barreled around the block screaming down the road away from the pursuing fire. The rear window shattered as another lucky hit the vehicle, Alyx turned in his seat and noticed several police cruisers peeling out to follow. He dropped the SMG and opted for the TKIV. He pulled the scope to his face and sucked in a quick breath blowing out the tires of one of the cruisers. The next shot he missed, instead blowing a sizable hole into the next cruisers headlights, with a curse he reloaded and fired again disabling it with that shot.
Alyx cycled the bolt on the rifle and tried to pull it back to his face to disable the third cruiser, but lost that bullet to a sharp curve as he flinched. With another oath Alyx dropped the rifle into the back seat and picked the MP7 back up, he emptied the last shots from the magazine and then shoved it into the glove box.
Behind them the third cruiser spun and swerved off the road flipping end over end. Alyx flinched and closed his eyes looking away, "Damnit. I killed that last one."
Sain didn't respond focusing on keeping their own vehicle under control at the high speeds through the curves. Alyx blinked back tears turning to retrieve the firearms they had and to catalog their ammo. The MP7 was out and he promptly chucked it out the window not wanting the deadweight, Sain's little LCP had six rounds, one of the clips for the TKIV had gone missing leaving him with seven shots, and he had eight rounds for the .44 magnum. He loaded the magnum and fashioned a holster for it out of his ruined seatbelt.
Sain began to slow down as the road got more complex and tighter, she brought the car down to the speed limit and sighed glancing over at Alyx. She did a little bit of a double take, "Are you okay?" She asked concerned at the tears on Alyx's cheeks.
Alyx shook his head, "I didn't mean to actually kill him." He looked down.
"So? It's never bothered you before." Sain replied.
Alyx's head snapped up and he glared at her, "I've never killed an innocent! Especially not an officer on our side!" He kicked at the floor board in anger and looked out the window, "Damnit! He was doing his job and he lost his life because I wasn't careful with the last rounds out of the SMG!"
Sain was quiet driving down the road carefully, they passed the barn with the tank in it and she continued in the direction where she was sure the military base was, "You did what you had to. I'm surprised you only killed one of them really." When Alyx didn't answer she smiled.
Alyx glanced over at her, "What!? What're you smiling about?" He spat.
"That's more like the Alyx's I decided to mate myself to. A respect for life." She murmured quietly and dropped her smile not looking at Alyx.
Alyx went back to brooding and considered throwing the TKIV through the window as well, but refrained as his specialty was sniper rifles, and they weren't exactly common in this part of Europe. With a resigned sigh he squirmed a little, pulling bits of broken glass out from under him,
"So much for not messing up this guy's car." He murmured.
. . .
Cye watched as Alyxyn and Sain slipped out the door and vanished, "Probably for good." Cye thought idly. He sighed and looked up at the ceiling feeling lightheaded from blood loss. He listened as the tromp of the police's 'finest' came closer to the room. There was some shouting from down the hall and Cye heard footsteps ascend to the next floors as well.
The door to the room was kicked open and Cye looked up the barrel of a Romanian AK briefly before the officer lowered it. He squatted next to the dragon,
"Are you okay?" He noticed the bandages and turned looking at the dead body of the lieutenant. "What happened?"
Cye groaned, "I was betrayed by my lieutenant and saved by a long lost friend."
The officer looked up, "Where's your friend?"
Cye shrugged, "He took my lieutenant down and his mate patched me up, they promptly left when you guys showed up. Their line of work doesn't really seem to leave them in good standing with most police forces."
The officer was silent studying the blue dragon. "Surely if they helped you, they're on our side?" He asked standing back up and speaking into his radio to say his floor was clear and he had an injured individual.
Cye shook his head, "I don't think so. They're not specifically against us per-se." Cye trailed off, he was foggy on the details as it was and he didn't know how much he could safely say.
The man raised an eyebrow as Cye staggered to his feet. He glanced out the door as gunfire erupted downstairs for a moment. There was shouting and the man's radio crackled on, "Two draconian's escaping by rooftop towards the mall. They are armed and dangerous, shoot first ask questions later." A dispatcher's voice announced.
Cye flinched, "If you could have them put their weapons cold I'd appreciate it."
The officer looked at Cye with a rather icy look, "Where's your weapon general?"
"Uhm... They've got it." Cye answered slowly.
"Then they are armed and attempting to evade authorities, there's nothing I can or will do." The man picked up the silenced rifle from the dead lieutenant and tossed it to Cye, "And you're gonna help us or be hung for treason, dragon."
"Wha?" Cye caught the rifle and flinched as pain arced up his side, "You're ordering wounded general to chase the people who just saved my life?"
The officer brought his rifle level, "No, I'm not ordering, I'm threatening. You know what's suspicious about you?" He motioned down at the lieutenant, "He's a human, and the three survivors of this incident are dragons. There's none left of your task force alive to prove that you didn't kill them all."
"But I didn't!" Cye exclaimed.
"Then prove it dragon!" The officer roared, "You will bring these other two in for questioning or face the consequences!"
Cye considered shooting the man right there and then, but that wouldn't help his case. Then something occurred to him, a memory dragging up from the news report about the GC's untimely demise, a name he'd recognized. Then on a whim he asked, "Do you work for Eli?"
The man's face paled, "I don't know what you're..." He stuttered a little.
"That bastard! That ex-KGB Russian piece of shit!" He suddenly pinned the man against the wall, "Tell me what you know! I'm the one who made sure that scheming bastard was removed from power, where is he and what's he doing?" He growled in the man's ear.
"I have no clu-"
"You know exactly what I'm talking about." Cye tore the man's radio off his vest as he started to reach for it. "That's not going to help you fool. Tell me before I dig my claws into your soft skin." Cye pressed his muzzle hard against the man's face, smoke curling from his nostrils.
"Gah! Fine beast!" The man struggled for a moment more before relenting, "He briefed me personally before I was sent out. I paid off your lieutenant, and arranged the ambush on your 'long lost friends'." The man spat.
Cye drew back for a second, "Interesting, but you didn't answer my question. What is he doing, and where is he?" He started to dig his claws into the man's chest.
The man yelped, "Okay, jeez!" He took a deep breath, "Eli, heard that Alyx and Sain showed up here in Norway, he thought they were dead. But now that he's heard their alive he wants the female brought to him."
"And Alyx?"
"No specifics there, he just said to remove him." The man gulped.
Cye was quiet for a moment, "Do you know why?"
"No idea." He yelped again as Cye's claws tightened, "I have no fucking idea okay!?"
Cye sighed and listened as several of the police cruisers outside peeled out and there was more gunfire outside. "Where is he?" He asked quietly.
The man shrugged, "I was in Bulgaria when he showed up, where he is now, I've no clue."
Cye growled low in his throat, "I should really just kill you for associating with that psychopath." He paused as the man's face paled, "But I won't."
"Thank y-" Cye jabbed the man under the jaw quickly and watched as the fool slid to the ground limp.
"Have a nice headache jackass." Cye stood up straight and picked up the AK-47, in his fury the pain of his bullet wound was forgotten as he walked out of the room and down the stairs. He jammed his general's beret onto his head and walked into the lobby. A few soldiers glanced his way before doing double-takes and saluting smartly. Cye ignored them all stomping through the lobby and out the front door.
"Who is the overseer here!?" He roared as he exited the building.
There was an array of random military and police vehicles around the front of the building. A German shepherd walked up to the dragon and saluted quickly.
"I am... erm, general..." The dog looked quizzically at the dragon.
Cye nodded, "Yes, general Cyrila Ravaroth."
"Ah, yessir? What do you need?" The dog asked.
"Well, first you're chasing the wrong people with those dragons, the man you're after is dead upstairs. Also one of your men fainted on me as he was helping me out." Cye managed a half smile, "I need a helo if you can get me one."
The dog shrugged, "For the general? Sure." He raised an eyebrow though, "He fainted?"
Cye shrugged "More or less, I may have caught him in the jaw with my wing when he tried to help me up." He lied easily.
The dog shrugged, "If you say so, I'm not going to ask. I'm sure you had a reason for putting him down."
Cye frowned swallowing another growl, "You may want to question him about black market and Russian contacts."
The German shepherd grunted noncommittally and picked up his radio calling a helicopter for Cye. "May I ask where you're off to general?"
Cye shook his head, "The military base right outside of the city. I have a hunch."
"About what?" The shepherd asked cocking his head to the side as the sound of the helicopter's rotors started to get loud.
"An old friend and possibly an old enemy might be there." Cye answered.
The helicopter came into view and landed on the street in front of the hotel. Cye jogged over to it and jumped into it. He told the pilot where to go and watched as the city below dropped away quickly. He stared unseeing out the window and thought, he had an idea what the Guardian project was now. Eli had been a Russian scientist and later special forces, while in the military he'd become obsessed with the idea of creating super soldiers and a method for infinitely long life. He remember the horrors of the Legend project and the torture the members of it had gone through, which had gotten Cye involved. He'd kicked Eli out of the forces and discredited him to the scientific community. Apparently Eli had gotten himself back in with the GC's since, and succeeded; if Alyx's powers were anything to go by.
The artic wolf was a lunatic, something had ruined his body while he'd been in the service, and apparently it had also ruined his mind as well. The wolf was also a known opposer of the dragon's and considered them an invasive species. Cye could care less about all the racism and shit, but when people became as crazed as Eli there was no telling what could happen.
"What the hell are you doing Eli?" Cye murmured quietly as the city began to disappear into the distance. He noticed a roadblock and a smoldering wreck beneath them but dismissed it idly, not really thinking about anything at this point.
. . .
Sain brought the car to a stop outside of the chain link fence of the base Vance had told them about. She and Alyx stepped out of the vehicle and hoisted a duffel bag over their shoulders simultaneously. Alyx walked up to the guard outside and saluted,
"Vance Slater is here yes?" He asked.
The guard looked the pair up and down and shook his head, "We're not open for tourists."
Alyx's brow furrowed slightly, "I didn't ask that. Is he here or not?"
He guard sighed, "Yeah he's here, he won't see anyone though, especially not civs."
"We're not civs! And I'm pretty sure he'll see us." Sain piped up from beside the Nissan and the guard noticed the bullet holes through the vehicle.
"The hell happened to you two?" He shook his head, "Nevermind, I'll radio him, but don't get your hopes up."
Alyx shrugged with a sly grin.
"Vance sir? There's a pair of civs-"
"We're not civs idiot!" Sain shouted over the man, making Alyx laugh.
The soldier glared at them and continued, "-who want to see you sir."
The radio crackled for a moment before Vance's voice came on, "That sounds like Sain shouting." There was a pause and a chuckle, "If it's a red and blue dragon you should let them in before she eats you or something Rodrick."
"Roger." Rodrick eyed the two for a moment before sighing resignedly, "My apologies, I guess."
The dragons shrugged and walked through the gate as he opened them with a remote. They walked over the concrete towards the main building and Vance burst out of one of the doors.
"Why didn't you two call me!?" He shouted running towards them as they laughed.
...Yup. That's this chapter. I hope it helps clear a little about the antagonist up. :p If anything isn't starting get clear at this point lemme know so I can rectify such in the next chapter, or at least revise something later. I know what I'm trying to say, but I don't know if it's coming across. XD Anyway, the city sucks, and I wanna go back home.
Peace!
