Touch by the Amber
This short story is the first part of a series (3 parts expected) I'm working on it. I know I could continue my other stories but this one just stuck in my head for a while. I'm currently working on the second part.
Don't ask me where it came from as I literally dreamt it. One day I woke up and remembered that I had a strange dream. So I wrote down the details and here is the first part.
Touch by the Amber
I’m floating. No lights, no sounds, no feeling. Nothing but the darkness and the thought that I’m slowly drifting away. I don’t know from what. I don’t know to where.
Then a sound broke through the darkness. First it was a weak high pitch voice, then slowly it got louder till it was almost unbearable. There was something that I understand from that voice. A word. A word that I heard before. It was oddly familiar from a woman. Then something else she said… no, it was another woman.
“Are you ok?” It shouted into the darkness and the black curtain had fallen. I gasped for air as my senses had been invaded by light, by sound, by feelings. The first thing I realized it was the pain emitting from my head, then I recognized who was talking to me.
“Don’t kill me!” I rolled away and jumped onto my feet. Which was a bit uncertain so I fell to my buttocks after two steps. There was a big cat, a lioness in front of me and a huge male. I was shocked, panicked and not because I knew they can eat me easily but because the darkness had returned. This time it was inside me, in my head and it hid my memories, pushed them away.
“I will not. Let me help you. You are injured.” She stepped closer and I didn’t know why she was talking about injury.
“I’m fine I think.” I touched my head as it was still in pain and when I slowly withdrawn my hand there was blood in it.
“What happened with you?” She asked and took another step closer. I was confused as I was about to answer but I couldn’t. My first memory was the voice that woke me. She wasn’t that voice. But who was she then?
“I don’t know.” I said and as she saw I’m not afraid from her anymore she slowly walked to me and examined my injury.
“Something hit your head really hard. Maybe this is the reason you are so confused. I know I had concussion once because of my brother.” She was chatting and did nothing suspicious. I knew she was a predator and I knew I was not. Also, predators used to eat others. But I did not feel I had to run and hide. I touched her face in an unexpected moment and caressed.
“You are beautiful.” I sighed then I shook my head. Memory loss is a thing but acting like a drunken idiot is another. “I’m sorry.”
“You are nice.” She smiled at me and the view of her teeth reminded me that she is a predator indeed. ‘Do not act like a moron in front of a predator’ I took a note for myself. “My name is Amelia. He is my brother Harvey. And your name?”
“I don’t know. I can’t remember anything.” I tried and tried but it was like stumbling in a dark room trying to reach something which probably isn’t there.
“He should visit a Healer.” Harvey came closer and I aligned my position so Amelia was in the middle. I was still afraid a little because of him.
“Do not worry. If you can walk, come back into the city.” Amelia smiled at me again. I had no choice.
***
The city was closer than I would thought. It was built from stone and wood and was the biggest city I have ever seen. Which means nothing according to the fact I had no memories. I could walk only with help as my balance was uncertain so I was relying on Amelia sometimes, she had to push me back to the right direction when I was about to fall.
They led me to a big building in the middle of the city. The walls were painted to white, green and yellow. As other buildings were just grey and without decoration I thought it must me something special. It was the Healer’s Building.
The Healer was a woman on two legs. As far as I could tell she was Human like me… if I’m a human but I did not know. She was old and wore a golden-green robe and glasses on her nose. Her hair was grey and white aligned to a pony tail at the back of her head.
She checked my temple and she said: “You got a big hit on your head indeed. I’m surprised you are alive and you walked on your own feet.” Which wasn’t reassuring.
“Mostly on his own feet.” Amelia marked for the record.
“Why can’t I remember anything?” I asked as she cleaned the wound. Meanwhile Harvey went to report something to someone. I wasn’t listening. Amelia remained to… well… I did not know why. But she was nice and I thought I’m safe with her. ‘I must hit my head harder than I thought’.
“You suffered a serious head injury. It can happen that you lost your memory forever, but if you are lucky they will come back slowly.”
“I lost my life.” I sighed.
“What do you mean? You are alive.” Amelia came closer.
“My memories were erased which means the first day of my life is today. Whatever I did before, whoever I was before… vanished… drifted away into the darkness. And she says it could be permanent.” I swallowed and bowed my head.

After we led the human to the Healer I thought I must report it to my commanding officer. I was a Guard-Captain of the City so it was my duty. Amelia insisted that I should go anyway. That strange human next by the road with a wound on his head somehow mesmerized her I could see in her eyes. I had no idea what could have happened with him but I was more interested on who did that with him. That person or group could be a danger to the city. There were attacks and lost people all around recently.
As I stepped to the door and was about to knock on it, it opened. Alverta stepped out. She was a muscular lioness who was feared among… everyone. She was blood lusting, rough and she loved to kill, torture, mutilate everyone in her reach. Of course the laws forbid it but she outplayed the laws as she became the Executioner and the Interrogator in one person. So she got the liberty to play with the prisoners and kill them in case it was necessary.
“Harvey. Long time no see.” She licked my ear quickly. That was her perversion every time she met with me. She liked me somehow and tried to seduce me every time. But I had more sense. Everyone knows the stories about mutilated males. Alverta used to eat males or just important parts after she reached the climax. I wasn’t about to be the next and I liked my important parts more than letting her near them.
“Indeed. Is Efren there?” I asked but it wasn’t necessary anymore as he was at the door by that time. “Nice day Efren! There is something that I would like to discuss with you.”
“Come in then. See you tomorrow Alverta.” Then he waved me inside. He was the High General of the Heavy Forces. Which was the highest rank in the country in case of military. He wasn’t young but the strength he radiated to everyone left no mistake: he is dangerous but you can trust him with your life. I did as we fought many battles together.
“I have found a human next by the city. He had been hit on his head by somebody and he can’t remember anything. He is now with a Healer and my sister.” I summarized the facts.
“Strange. Do you know anything more?” He laid next to his desk, there were maps and notes everywhere on it.
“There were three books next by him. All about physics. So I think maybe he is a Magister. But his cloths were strange and he did not wear the Medallion of Magister.”
“The one who hit him could stole it as well.” He shrugged. “But the books can be a lead. Every library has a record on every book comes or goes.” Then he stood up. “Let’s go to the Healer first. An attack next by the city could be a premonitory of a crime gang or worse.”
“I was thinking the same. Let’s go.” I nodded as he walked to me.

I had tons of time to think and overthink my miserable situation. The main problem was that I did not know what could me my profession. ‘Do I have wife? Children? Am I a criminal? A hero?’ I hadn’t had the slightest idea what should I do after I leave the Healer’s Building.
A huge maned lion walked to me in company of Harvey. His mane was almost black and his fur was on a darker tone than the other’s. His eyes were yellow but there were strange darker spots in it. He looked like a strong person, someone who use to give orders not take them.
“He is the High General…” Harvey started but the lion waved him to stop.
“I’m Efren. I won’t hurt you but I have to ask a few questions.” He said. You know I had problems with answering questions at the moment so I just shrugged.
“OK. But I can’t remember a single thing.” I mentioned just for the record.
“Nothing? Absolutely nothing?” He stepped closer and looked into my eyes. He looked for something, maybe he tried to figure it out if I’m a lair or not. “Hm… You are telling me the truth I can see. It will make my job harder.” Then he turned to the Healer. “Susan? What do you think?”
“The head trauma has been caused by a blunt instrument. Five centimeters in diameter, sharp edge, probably made from wood.”
“Maybe he just fell.” Efren guessed.
“The angle and the force… no I don’t think… unless he was running then jumped, twisted and landed onto his head on an unexpected strange way. I would say it’s more believable that he had been hit from this angle while he was on his knees.” Then she showed with her hand. Like I was hit from behind, left side. But no matter how I tried I couldn’t recall the moment.
“The first thing I remember is a voice. A woman, calling me. Then I woke up next by the road. If I was attacked I want to know why and by whom. Maybe that person knows me.” I told to Efren and he was nodding.
“Your accent is strange.” He said and I was uncomprehending.
“Why?”
“You don’t have any. Our language is hard and everybody has a little accent depends where he or she was born and raised. After a few sentence you can tell if One is from north, west. From Afraim Region or Temerak Lowland. You can even guess the city itself with great precision.” He kept a little pause and measured me from head to toe. “But you don’t have the slightest accent so I don’t know where you are coming from. You are speaking the literary version of the language and you are speaking it well.” Then another moment of silence.
“I think this is my language. I understand every single word.” I said while the healer made a bandage on my head after she applied some stinky liquid on it.
“Meg tudod mondani hogy ki vagy?” He said, I just shook my head. Which wasn’t a good idea as the pain hit me again so I had to grab the frame of the bed I was sitting on.
“I don’t know what you just said.” I sighed as the pain faded away.
“It was Human Language. I asked you to introduce yourself.” Then he sighed and cocked his head like he was thinking hard. I must have been a hard nut to crack. “Come with us. We will visit the Library.” He invited me.
“Why?” I was uncomprehending again.
“You had books and it’s reasonable to assume they are from our library. Which means your name could be in the register.” He looked at me meaningfully. I stood up and waved him to show the way. This was like a straw in the wind but my only straw to grab on.

The Library was next by the Healer’s Building so it wasn’t a long journey to get there. Susan the healer was insisting that she must keep an eye on me so she came with us. ‘Me, three lions and a Healer walking into the Library… like in a joke… how I wish I could remember a single one.’
The Librarian was an ancient lion, he was so old he had grey and white fur, sparse mane, bony limbs and blue eyes. His eyes were blue! I suddenly remembered a bluish glint which hit me hard. I lost my balance for a second.
“These books from my library indeed but I have never given to anyone.” He said as they were shown him.
“Do you mean he stole them?” Efran raised his eyebrows. ‘Fantastic. I’m a thief!’ I thought.
“It is not possible. This is the only entrance. There are no windows and hidden doors. I have the only key and I’m living here. No one can sneak inside and then walk away with my books without being seen.” He was angry I could tell. “These books shouldn’t be outside of the Library anyway as they are too old. They can be damaged by the sunlight itself. So he couldn’t have them and I did not give them.” Then he closed to door with a key and led us to the forest of the shelves.
The Library was huge and tall. Shelves and books everywhere you can look. Old books, scrolls and parchments, new books and even notes sometimes. There was something familiar in that place but I did not know what.
“Look! That is not possible!” We arrived to the Physics section. That spot looked like a tornado had attack it. The books were torn apart and laying on the floor. The shelves were damaged also. It reminded me to an explosion but without fire.
“High kinetic forces.” I whispered and they looked at me.
“Look the shelf. Five centimeters in diameter, wooden, sharp edges.” Susan distracted everyone as she stepped closer to a shelf. “And there is blood on it.” She stroked her hand on a place almost at the center of the explosion. As she showed us, there were red strain on it. I touched my head and the bluish flash hit me again. A memory came back and I fell into it.
***
Running. Enemy. Kill. Hide… look out! Explosion! Pain! I must escape! I’m falling! Something hit my head, but I MUST NOT STOP! HELP ME!
***
I fell onto my knees as the images, this glimpses of memories hit me and the panic, fear and despair filled me in an instant. They had no meaning. I was on a street, running from or to something. I felt that someone wanted to kill me and I had to hide. I hid in a corner of a room. Something grabbed me and then an explosion threw me away. I felt pain and that I was falling into the darkness. The bluish flash, something hit my head at the same spot my wound was. Panic grabbed me again and the urge to not stop, to run and hide again! I was at the end of my stamina and ‘I MUST NOT STOP! HELP ME!’
“Relax, there is no problem. You are in safe. Everything will be ok.” Amelia kept whispering into my ears as she was hugging me and tried to quell me. I was at a shelf, arms grabbing her as I buried my face into her fur. I was crying in fear and I did not know why. The memories were so sudden. Still did not have a clue what happened but it was terrifying. I was in trouble.
“Please help me…” I whispered to her. “Help me” I was shaking in fear and gasped for air as I was fought with my tears.
***
After Amelia reassured me I’m protected and she won’t let me down, I was able to pull myself together. It was hard as I was shaking like an aspic. Something terrible happened with me. But what?
“He was in the library, destroying the books, hitting the self with his head. Then without noticed by anybody he walked out from the city and collapsed next be to road.” Harvey summarized what we learned. “It doesn’t make any sense.” He sighed.
“Indeed.” Efran nodded. “A human covered with blood carrying old books is something that the guards will notice and stop at least two times till he would reach the border of the city. Still… he escaped.” He was thinking hard again. I just walked next by them, one hand on Amelia’s back caressing. She just kept smiling at me and it made me happy. I did not know why.
“HELP! FIRE!” A shout came from the distance and after a second, bells ringed all around the city. As I was looking for it I saw a huge smoke cloud emerging not from far.
“What happened?” I asked.
“Come with us!” Efran cried and ran away with Harvey and Amelia. Even Susan was in hurry despite her age. So I fastened my pace and hoped for the best.
A two storey building was engulfed by flames and lions with buckets tried to save what can be saved. In front of it there were young lions, cubs covered with blankets and with older lions dressed in golden-green robes. ‘They must be the Healers.’ I thought.
“It is a school! Oh my! The cubs!” Shouts hit my ear.
“is there anyone inside?” Someone asked from another.
“Just Christine. She saved the cubs but she stuck inside. There is no way to save her!” That one answered.
“Poor girl! She will burn alive!”
Then to a strange instinct I got myself running into the flames. Amelia shouted after me; I must stop, but then a piece of wood fell which opened the way in for a few seconds. I jumped and was inside of a collapsing building on fire. The small hole was disappeared in flames within a blink. I must have had perfect reflexes and timing… and twisted mind as I trapped myself in the certain death.
The smoke was choking and I couldn’t see much but Christine was not far from the door to the next room. She must have thought the door frame will save her like in case of an earthquake. But she was unconscious by the time I reached.
“Wake up!” I shook her but she did nothing. She was smaller than Amelia, maybe she wasn’t an adult yet or just barely. Marks of scorch on her paws and body, and her left arm was definitely broken. There was no way she could have escaped without help.
I carefully reached around at her shoulder and pulled in the middle of the room. The doorway just collapsed and shower of embers hinted me so I quickly covered my unconscious companion.
“What happened? The cubs?” She sighed and woke up slowly in the next minute. The air was a little better there and no way out I was thinking about the possibilities.
“The cubs are fine but we are not! Come, grab my shoulder so I can lift you.” I told her but her eyes went wide looking over my head. She wasn’t looking me but something above me. Then I could hear the cracking sound and the whole building were trembled as it was the moment of collapse. I closed my eyes and leaned over Christine, was ready to die. But suddenly I could only hear silence.
As I opened my eyes everything was frozen into the moment. The flames, the ambers the ash were just sitting in the air without the intent to move. The collapsing roof the falling girder just stopped, motionless.
“What is happening?” Christine was asking me. Like I had any answer.
“I don’t know but it bought some time to us. Quickly, grab me!” She did and I lift her. On the left side the window was about to fall off so I thought it could be the way out. Whatever happened It saved us if I can reach that hole. Christine was grabbing me only with one paw and I was holding with my both hands at her shoulder and under her back end. I said she wasn’t that big but she was heavy.
Still choking in smoke I jumped out from the building and landed on my back. Exactly in the moment I hit the ground everything came alive and the loud crash filled the air as the building collapsed into itself. Two lions came and pulled us away.

I was in the Healer’s Building again as I signed my arms and swallowed too many smoke. Christine was sleeping next to me on a bed. Susan told me she will be fine but she must sleep while they fix here broken arm and apply some medicine on the burnt spots. Amelia distracted my thoughts as she was laying in my bed next by me. She called me hero and fool at the same time.
“Let me sum up.” Efran came to visit us. The cubs were transported to a Healer’s House for Cubs as they called and they were all fine. “You don’t know who you are. You can’t remember your name. You are not from our species but you can speak our language perfectly. Then you ran into a building in flames to save someone you do not know.” The he stopped and just looked at me.
“I thought I must do it. She was in danger.” I told him and he smiled.
“The Nameless Hero.” He was thinking, then he patted my shoulder. “You showed us who you are really; A man with good heart.”
“Efran …” I started. I wanted to tell him about the time-stopping thing. But then I just continued. “… thank you for not eating me alive on the first sight.” He laughed again.
“According to the recent events; you are very welcome!” Then he walked away. I just laid back to Amelia and hugged her. I was fast asleep in the next minute.

“Where is she!?” Alverta jumped to me when I left the Healer’s Building. I was too busy with my thoughts about the Human so first I did not know what she was asking.
“Your sister is inside. She will be alright though she broke her arm.” I answered automatically then I grabbed her as she was about to storm inside. “The Human saved her. He is under my protection from now on.” I said and first she was surprised then she showed me an evil smile… thinking about it she had only that kind of smile.
“Understood General.” She nodded and went.
“The Nameless Hero.” I was whispering to myself as I walked to my office. The events were too familiar to me. There was a prophecy about it so I had to read it again.
As soon as I arrived I went to my shelf and put a few books away. It had a fake back with important military documents, maps and notes in case of emergency. I fished them out because there was an old book at the bottom. An old, worn and dust covered book I had read decades ago. I opened slowly, carefully and turned to the part:
“When the Singing Pigeon had fallen from the sky and the Stones of Herald are crying in sorrow, the Nameless Hero is stepping outside of the Veil. He will suffer the Touch by the Amber. He will fight with the Lord of the Red Lady. He will bend the Calm of Eternity. He will die and live again. Then Lions will gather and rise under the Flag of Sand, they will shake off the Snow, grab the Veil and throw into the face of the Eye of Omniscience.”
I looked up from the book and did not know what to do. In the first time of my life I was uncertain about something. The Singing Pigeon happened a year ago. It was a constellation. All of the stars had disappeared and the next night a bunch of shooting stars came. They fallen from the sky. The Stones of Herald was a place with strange graven rocks. The flood destroyed them last week. And then… the Nameless Hero appeared in the city. The Nameless Hero who stepped outside of the Veil. ‘The Veil is the archaic name of the Nowhere. The Human who has no accent so we don’t know where he came from. He ran into a flaming building and he signed his skin. He has been Touched by the Amber. But the rest of the prophecy… could mean anything or nothing.
“Damn riddles!” I scolded and put the book back into the shelf.

I woke up at night. Only a few candles were lighting up the room so I was laying on the island of brightness and only the darkness surrounded me. I slowly sat up and was listening. I heard a rhythmic sound, like footsteps… no! It was something else. A presence was pounding; someone was there hiding in the darkness. I slowed down my heartbeats and I felt it; someone was watching me and not just from the darkness. It was the Darkness itself.
The shadows turned to darker and they moved away, slithered like snakes. They tried to break into the isle of brightness, tried to catch me. They turned over a bed in front of me and I was at the edge of the panic. I did not know what to do! How can I defeat the Darkness?
“What was that?” Amelia woke up next by me and I looked at her. Suddenly the presence faded away and the shadows were just ordinary shadows again. The night slowly filled with life and light.
“I don’t know. I don’t want to know.” I sighed. The bed was on its side in front of us so I did not just imagine the whole thing. I swallowed hard.
“I don’t know why I’m doing this. But I feel I have to. I feel something for you.” She said slowly and I smiled at her. Her eyes were shining and I slowly forgot the meeting with the darkness as I looked into them.
“I feel something for you too. I thought because you were the first person I saw in my life. But now I’m not certain. You… are always with me and you consoled me when I was afraid. And look at you! You are here again, next by me.” I caressed her head and she put her paw onto my thigh.
“We are alone.” She whispered and indeed. Despite the lioness sleeping on the next bed, we were alone. There was something in her voice that ignited my blood and in the next second I kissed her mouth.
“Are you sure about this?” I asked as she pulled my pants off. She just grabbed my already hard member and put it in her mouth. I was trusting her completely so there wasn’t any doubt in me about letting a predator munching on my penis. And she did. First she was uncertain what should she do so she just suckled on it carefully. “You can do it harder.” I reassured her and the suckling become way more vigorous. I felt like she was about to suck my insides out through my penis. Her tongue was rough but she did not move back and forth more like up and down. Meanwhile she tightened and loosened her jaw around my cock. Sometimes she was too vehement and I could feel her incisors scratching the base, but the rest of her deadly maw was giving me pleasure from the tip to the bottom. Then she suddenly stopped. My heart skipped a beat I think; it was so unexpected. I was in the middle of the pure bliss and it was over.
“I want it!” She whispered and turned around, laid onto her belly, raised her rump. As she bent her tail out of the way; I could see her pussy dripping with diaphanous fluids. She wanted it badly! So I rose to my knee and aligned myself to the entrance. As I put my glans onto her hole I thought I must be insane to have sex with something not Human. But the thought had dissolved in the lust and I caught myself on pushing. The lips slowly parted and adapted to my thickness and with a sudden move my glans was inside of her.
Oh the heat was unexpected and the tightness was so intense I did not want to go deeper. But the instincts led me, not the rationality. Slowly I started to slid deeper and deeper till my pelvis hit her butt. I knew in an instant this mating won’t last long. I pulled myself out. Something happened with her as she started to purr loudly. The deep vibrating sound echoed in my bones and made me whimper in pleasure. I kept pulling till only my glans were inside then I pushed back slowly savoring every inch of her pulsating canal. The purring became louder and as soon as I was fully in, she yowled up in pleasure. That was the moment when I thought I will die. Her vagina muscles became whirling snakes, they grabbed me and tried to milk and crush my cock at the same time. Her fluids came in rivers and I could swear she was warmer inside than a second ago. Anyway but the sudden attack to my cock and senses was enough to break through my barrier and I came like there is no tomorrow. My heart was about to jump out, my vision blurred as I collapsed onto her back grabbing and pulling her to my face for a kiss.
“Wow. That was intense.” A voice came from the other bed. Christina was awake and watched us with pure curiosity and lust. “Dibs for the next round!” She smiled.
