As I said earlier, my name is Jared Shadow. My father was Damien Shadow, and my mother was Sierra Angelus. Genetech used their disappearance five years ago to call them the masterminds of the Exordium Omnigenus Omega, which is more commonly known as "The beginning of the end of all life." My aunt was accused of helping them escape justice and was hung as a traitor while she tried to live a peaceful life within the compound. Watching her death convinced both my cousin Joshua and I to leave. When we got to the gate there were guards everywhere. Joshua smiled at me and said softly "Jared, only one of us can make it through. So I'm going to lead the guards away." He hugged me tightly, and, before I could protest, ran up to the guard and let out a shrill whistle to catch their attention. They saw him and the commander yelled "HE'S THE SON OF THE TRAITOR AFTER HIM!!!!!"

Josh smirked at me over his shoulder then took off in the opposite direction leaving the gate completely unguarded. I quickly ran out of it and swore to get my revenge on the bastards who'd killed my family. I ran away from the compound as fast as I could, and my friend Luna, who was a female wolf that had imprinted on me as a pup, followed me. I motioned for her to turn back and she shook her head as if to say "No, we're pack." I sighed and kept running with her alongside me, wondering where we should go. After a while I stopped dead and stared at my surroundings. Unlike the scavengers, who were specifically trained to go out with those that guarded all of the compounds, I knew nothing about the surrounding area thanks to the deforestation by the beasts.

Luna looked at me questioningly as I dropped to my knees and let a single tear fall from my eyes. I sighed and said softly "I don't know where we should go Luna. Should we go back to my aunt's old ranch, or head to my parent's home?" Suddenly as if in answer to my question I remembered my mother saying "We left several things in the house, when the time is right it's up to you to come get them." I smiled to myself then turned to Luna and asked her "Do you know the way back to New Sena City?" She nodded with a wag of her tail then her ears started to droop and she growled. I blinked and said "So it's infested with beasts?" She nodded and I swore softly then said "That sucks. However it's the only place I can go Luna, can you take me there?" She slowly nodded with a look that said I was crazy then turned and started trotting for an old road that had been torn to shreds.

I raced after her then dropped to a light jog as I caught up to her and she let out a growl. We walked along for a good twenty minutes before we saw any signs of life. The first thing we saw was a small shoot sticking up out of the ground straining for the light of the sun. I sighed softly and mumbled "What a miserable world the next generation will grow up in. At least I know what trees, plants, and other things of nature look like." Luna looked at me questioningly and I smiled at her then rubbed her ears and said "Don't worry about it, you can ask your dam about it when you get back to the compound." Luna looked at me when I said you as if she was asking "What the hell do you mean, you?" I blinked and said "What?" She stopped in the middle of the road and glared at me.

I sighed and said softly "I can't go back to the compound. They'll either kill me for being a traitor, or take away my most prized possession." I pulled out my dad's journal and showed it to her then put it back in my shirt and said softly "I've been its guardian for six years now. I can't let it fall into anyone else's hands. Hell I haven't even started reading it yet. However just because I can't go back doesn't mean you can't. You need to go back and at least say goodbye. If you want I'll wait outside of the compounds reach by about three hours while you say your farewells and what not." She thought about it then nodded and nuzzled my cheek before starting off again. After about ten, maybe fifteen, more minutes of walking Luna growled at me to stop then started sniffing the air. I shivered and glanced around studying the road.

Slowly I glanced behind us as Luna crouched down growling. I saw what was left of a stop sign and picked it up getting ready for the worst. Suddenly a beast with nine limbs burst out of the bushes. It stood about ten feet tall, had eight, claw like legs coming out of its sides, the head of a human with warped and twisted eyes, a mouth that was full of serrated edged teeth, and a tail that ended in a sharp blade made of bone. I stared at it for a few minutes then glanced down at the metal pole in my hand and mumbled "Oh fuck me." The creature turned at the sound of my voice then a strange tongue that had a hosed tip came out and seemed to sniff the air. After a few minutes strange mucus like substance was excreted from its tongue and dropped to the ground. I stared at the spot the mucus had touched and watched as it started to burn and sizzle before solidifying into a clear coat almost like glass.

The creature's tongue went back into its mouth. It slowly closed its mouth and twitched its lips up into what could be seen as a twisted smile then said in a voice like sizzling asphalt "Come to me boy, and your puppy won't have to be harmed. I know what you are by sight and smell. You would make a wonderful meal, though should you awaken you'd make a powerful ally." I stared at it then glared and said "Let me think about it for a few seconds." I closed my eyes and pretended to think then opened them and said "Fuck no; now go back into whatever cesspool you crawled out of." Its smile slowly turned into a glare then it snarled at me the hiss completely gone from its voice and jumped over Luna to lunge for me. I instinctively jumped to the side and held up my metal pole which was sliced cleanly in two by the damn thing's tail.

It snarled at the fact it's first swing didn't kill me and swung its tail at me multiple times, but I just kept rolling out of the way. Eventually I found myself near a rock and slid behind it. The creature's tail struck and got stuck in the rock. I stared then smirked and said "Problem with something that can cut through almost anything is pulling it out when it gets stuck." Luna took this golden opportunity to rush over and bite down at the base of the tail tip and crunch through to the bone. The beast let out a horrible shriek and tried to pull its tail away only to pull the stump of what had once been a dangerous weapon back.

The creature stared at me as I chuckled softly and said "Oh you find that funny, well laugh at this, boy!" Suddenly a new tail tip sprouted from the broken stump and started swinging wildly after Luna. Luckily even though the creature was fast, she was even faster. She was like a silver blur that neither I nor the beast could keep track of. While Luna kept it distracted I worked on freeing its tail tip from the rock. After about ten minutes of work I finally got the thing free then stared at it wondering how I was going to use it. Suddenly I got an idea and whistled. Luna looked at me and I yelled "LUNA LIGHT THIS PLACE UP!" She nodded and let out a howl causing everything in the area to be hit with bright beams of moonlight.

I rushed through the moonlight with my eyes closed listening to the sound of the beast crashing around and howling then jumped up and brought its tail tip down muttering "Taste this Mother Fucker." I felt the thing spasm underneath me and jumped back muttering "Oh I probably just put my foot in it." As the moonlight slowly faded I saw the creature was pinned to the ground and was slowly dying. It glared at me and said softly "My brethren will come, and they will destroy you." I smirked at him then nodded for Luna to lead the way and we headed off. I thought about what he said and mumbled "I don't doubt they'll find his corpse, but I don't think we'll be close enough for them to track us too easily. Plus I think we entered his kind's territory just now." Luna nodded in response to my thoughts then trotted alongside me looking extremely proud.

I glanced at her questioningly then asked "First time in real combat?" She nodded with a smug grin and I said "Don't get cocky; we got lucky because he expected us to be less than we were. If he'd assumed we were stronger and paid more attention we'd be the ones skewered on his tail." She thought about it a while then slowly nodded her grin dying and we continued on our way. We walked for another two hours then stopped and got a drink from a stream that was running alongside the road. I glanced at Luna and asked "Think we'll have to go much farther?" She shook her head and pointed her paw over the next hill then growled softly.

I sighed and nodded then said "This time I think we'd better be as low profile as we can. No more howling, no more yelling from me, nothing like that. We walk slowly and quietly, I talk quietly, and you don't so much as sneeze without making sure that there are no monsters that can hear us. Agreed?" She nodded and we slowly inched our way up the hill and stopped at the crest looking all over. It seemed that none of the beasts were out, but I didn't expect our luck to hold since it was almost sundown. I quickly got up and we rushed down to the first house we could and slipped in. I barred the door shut and the two of us walked upstairs to the second floor then laid down hiding under a blanket on the floor hoping nothing had heard us.

After a while Luna and I slipped asleep cuddling each other. As we slept I had a strange dream of a figure walking up and studying me then saying softly "You need to get stronger if you want to protect them. What you did with that crawler says you have potential, but potential doesn't mean anything if you don't flesh it out with good old hard work." The figure laughed then ruffled my hair and said simply "Be careful of those you trust kiddo, your powers are just starting to manifest, and taking the wrong turn now could make you so much worse than the creature you killed." I shivered in my sleep and tried to mumble a protest but the figure just laughed and said "Don't worry you'll understand as time goes on. Also, you may want to join one of the bands of wanderers, or a community made of wanderers since you can't go back to Adduco Accendo. "

I started to say that maybe I could someday return, however the words sounded like a lie in my own head so I didn't say anything. Finally the figure started to depart as I awakened and said "Remember what you're parents told you, and what I've said. The fate of those you cherish rests in your hands, remember that young Angel of Shadow." I jerked awake in a cold sweat and nudged Luna who opened one eye questioningly. I pointed out the window which was already starting to show some light then the two of us got up and started downstairs. I heard a deep resounding growl and looked around for the source then saw Luna looking down slightly shamefaced and realized the growl was coming from her stomach. I laughed and said "When we get to my parent's place we can have something to eat, and some fresh water."

She nodded and the two of us continued down the road hoping things didn't get more dangerous as we walked. Occasionally Luna let out a soft growl as she looked in the occasional alley where eyes looked back at her. Every time something stared into her eyes it eventually backed down and slinked away without a single challenge of any sort. I followed her for a while then stopped when we got to my parents place and slowly walked up to the door. I reached forward and grasped it then turned it slowly expecting the worst; however when I opened the door everything was as it had been when I left to move in with my aunt's family. I smiled and slowly walked through the house letting the memories overcome me, and yet another tear fell from eye. Luna looked at me questioningly and I said softly "Good memories this time. I'm remembering how everything was back when the world was a better place."

She slowly nodded in understanding then the two of us started exploring the house. Her nose led her to the pantry where most of the food was still stored while my memories led me upstairs to my old room where I plopped down on the bed. It groaned under my weight but held together. I whispered softly "How I wish the old days hadn't ended so quickly." I buried my face in my pillow breathing in its old scent one last time then got up and started for my parent's room. I slowly walked through it until I ended up finding an old family photo. I stopped and stared at it comparing how I was then, to how I am now.

The first thing I noticed was that my dirty blonde hair had gotten lighter as I aged, making it go from what people would call dishwater blonde to a dark blonde. Next was that my eyes which had always been full of joy and a light blue back then had turned grey and had more sorrow than joy in them anymore. My young physique had grown into a slim yet tall muscular frame that most people underestimated. Due to the hardness of the past few years my eyes had also gained a slight edge, almost like the wolves I'd spent all my time with back at the city. Other than that nothing had really changed. I hadn't gained any new scars, and I hadn't really had any baby fat to lose, because my physique had always been somewhat slim. I sighed and laid the picture down then walked over to my parents' closet and opened it.

It was completely empty. I sighed and mumbled "I should have known they wouldn't make it that easy," then turned and started digging throughout the room trying to find any sign of what they'd left me. Eventually I sighed and gave up. I leaned my head against the wall and whispered softly "Where could you have hidden what you wanted me to find mom. Aunt Laura didn't have a chance to tell me before they killed her, and you didn't explain other than to say come back for it when I needed it." I closed my eyes trying to think of any clues she could have given me when I remembered her always calling me her "Sweet little Angelus." It was her family name and it meant Angel, but it meant so much more than that to me. It meant she loved me more than anything else in the world and she saw me as her personal angel.

I smiled as an idea of where they could have hidden whatever it was I was looking for then went over to the plaque mom always had on the wall that said "Tutis Angelus" meaning protected by angels. I smiled slightly seeing that and mumbled softly "May the angels watch over you, mom, dad, Josh." Then slowly pulled the plank off the wall to reveal a bare stretch of wall, where everything else was completely painted. I knocked on it and heard a hollow thudding sound. I smirked and slammed my fist through then pulled back taking the wood with my hand and mumbled "Thank god for shabby architecture, or that would have really hurt."

I slowly pulled the rest of the wood away from the opening and stared into its depths realizing it was much longer than I expected. I reached my hand in and slowly pulled out a trio of cloth covered items. One was long and thin, one was folded up and wrapped into a ball, and one was by the feeling alone a box. I slowly set them down beside me and continued to root around within the hollow trying to find out if there was anything else. Eventually I found what felt like a folded piece of paper and slowly drew it out wondering what it could possibly say. Instead of reading it right away like I was so desperate to do, I picked up everything and walked downstairs to the kitchen.

Luna was sitting down staring at the pantry and whining softly trying to figure out how it opened. I laughed and walked over then opened it and pulled out several containers of food and started cooking them. Luna whined but waited patiently then started tugging on my pant leg when she smelled that the food was done. I laughed and set a bowl of it down. She grinned at me then started to eat it ravenously. I smirked and set my stuff on the table then poured myself a bowl and started eating. Luna and I ate voraciously for about ten minutes, and ended up licking our bowls clean when we were done, I then gave us each second helpings, which we devoured a bit more slowly.

When I finished my second bowl I set the pot on the floor and let Luna finish what was left. I sighed softly and she looked up at me with her face half buried in the food questioningly. I laughed and said "Just thinking on whether or not I want to read the damn note attached to these things. I guess I should, huh?" She nodded an affirmative then went back to eating voraciously, because unlike me she hadn't quite reached her majority yet. I laughed softly and opened the note then ran my fingers over the scrollwork that went all the way around it and blinked. I smiled slightly as I saw my mom's handwriting and realized that it was a page torn out of her journal.

I smiled then breathed in deeply and started reading it. The note went as follows "My dear sweet Angelus. I know we didn't explain much to you when we left, but I guess it's time I told you a bit of family history. To start, our family name is indeed Angelus as I told you, however many people who knew your grandfather would call our particular group the fallen. You see he married my mother, whose bloodline wasn't within the "codes" as those he worked for called it. Her name was Mia Restorez, and she basically gave my father new life. You see he'd been trained to prepare for a war he believe was never coming, however the rest of his family, my uncles and cousins in particular, thought that the war would come when it was least expected.

My father told them that the war they were so desperate for wouldn't come until they were all dead, and ironically that may have been the truth. When he married my mother he took the tools given to him by his family, which bore their coat of arms, and locked them away. He only ever brought them out to show both your Aunt Laura and I what they looked like, and how to use them should anything happen to him or my mother. Eventually my mother passed away, and my father became a slightly more bitter man. He blamed his side of the family for her death, and swore that he would never again trust them. He told us that should we choose to follow the codes he once lived by he would be proud of us, but not to trust our family, who would gladly slay us both. Laura took that to heart and became a modern day protector of the weak; I on the other hand chose a different route.

I became a medic, believing that the best way to protect everyone was by finding cures for what was killing us. You see your grandmother fell ill to a little known disease, and yet my father's side of the family knew of a plant that could quite possibly have cured her. I spent years learning everything I could about medicine, botany, and so much more. However eventually I realized that many of the plants I was studying were not listed in any text book and asked my father about it. He stared me in the eyes and said softly "You will need to speak with the order if you wish to continue your study. They will accept you because you are an Angelus." I stared at him lost and he smiled sadly then said "It's time I tell you everything."

_He led me up to the attic, where his tools were locked away, and brought them out then handed them to me. I stared at him lost and he said softly "You and your sister deserve these now. You've both done more to the code than any of my family who went before you." I stared at the flaming blade held in the arms of a white winged angel upon the equipment and he said softly "Now let's go outside and I'll truly explain everything." We walked downstairs and my father sat down on the stump he'd usually use to chop wood. I slowly sat down across from him on one of our folding chairs with the equipment in my lap. He sighed and said softly "Our family, meaning you, your sister, and I's family, has a long history. We go back to before the fall of the kings of old, and even to a time before the empire of Vanistia fell." _

_I stared at him wondering why he would talk about the empire's fall being within our family history and he just smiled at me sadly as if he could read my thoughts. He sighed softly and stretched out then said softly "Before I can let you meet the order I need to tell you of our family history, and some of its history." He closed his eyes and breathed in deeply then opened them. I jerked back slightly startled because they contained a fire I hadn't seen in them since my mother had died and he was telling me stories as a little girl. He breathed out then slowly began "About three thousand years ago when the empire of Vanistia was still strong, a group known as the order of Caelestis Aeternitas." _

He took a deep breath then continued "The Order of Caelestis Aeternitas, or Heavenly Eternity, as it was later translated to, was the reason the empire fell. They found ancient tomes that said if the Empire didn't fall the world itself would suffer. The order was founded by a boy named Graceo Caritas. He was the one who found the first tome of what many scholars within the order would call 'The book of Eternity.' Our ancestor Roland Angelus was inducted into the order ten years before the fall of Vanistia, and had a great hand in it. Many of our family have since called him 'The Fallen Angel' for his memoirs spoke of regretting what he'd done."

He slowly looked away from me and stared off into the distance then said "From the fall of Vanistia, till the fall of the Kings of Curis Quris, which is Latin for spear. They had been the king's councilors since the birth of the kingdom of the spear, and as such its fall was blamed upon the order. That was fifteen hundred years ago. Afterward the order went into hiding and worked in secret. Only those whose families were already in the order could enter, and it was forbidden to marry outside the order I you'd taken the oaths. Your aunt Marana never took the oaths so she never had to worry about who she married. "

He smiled slightly at that then said softly "I on the other hand had dreams of gloriously serving in the order with my father, uncles, brothers, sisters, and so many others. I wanted to be remembered for something, and it nearly cost me everything. However as I got older and started to look at what my sister had with longing I met your mother. She was the most beautiful woman I'd ever seen, and she taught me what life was truly about. She taught me it was about what you made of it, not what you thought was right or wrong. I tried to explain that to the order but they wouldn't hear it, so I left." He looked me dead in the eyes after that and said softly "Sierra, don't let the order guide your actions once you join them. Take from them what you need, and live by your own code not theirs."

He then went on to tell me about the code, and a special prophecy that one of the researchers found was all about our family. He didn't tell me what the prophecy or anything else like it was, he just told me the code and led me to the Organizations main base. I swore the oaths two days later after proving I could take whatever they sent at me and studied every medical text they had. Eventually I opened a pharmaceutical company with its own hospital that the organization's agents could pass through without any problem. They received free treatment, and beginners in the organization were given a chance to learn basic medical skills from top class doctors. I eventually found the prophecy my father told me about, it happened three months after I opened my company, and it's attached medical bay.

Your aunt Laura was telling me about her new boyfriend, who would soon become your Uncle Johnathan, and I was searching through some old books one of the agents who passed through offered me. I'd gladly taken them, since they were all old medical texts, except for one. It was called the 'Prophetia Finis' which meant the prophecy of the end. I read it and it talked about how at the end of everything the world would completely change. Monsters would roam the earth; humanity would have been decimated by a plague, and a young man known as the Angel of Shadow would rise up to become the guardian angel of all. I thought it was a load of bunk, until Johnathan told me that signs of it were already showing. He was a member of the organization who'd is entire life studying the different prophecies.

Eventually he introduced me to your father, Damien Shadow. Damien was the most charming man I'd ever met, however he wasn't a member of the organization. I married him anyway and convinced the organization his connections to the global corporation Genetech could help us. Nine months to the day, after we got married both you and your cousin Josh were born. Johnathan and Damien were so ecstatic that they wouldn't let either of you out of their arms.

My father came to the hospital the day before and had stayed with us then he'd studied the two of you and said softly "The line of the fallen angel is strong in these two. They'll make our family proud." Suddenly he pointed at Josh and said softly "He will always be a guardian, never once thinking of himself, always looking out for those around him, just like his mother." He then pointed at you and whispered "He has much of his father in him, yet it's balanced by his mother. He'll have a kind soul, but a hard heart. His road will be paved with blood, for he is the angel of Shadow, prophecy speaks of." He then coughed and fell back into his chair. His eyes grew distant and he said softly "I'm coming my love, my job is finally done. I'll be with you shortly, I'll finally see the light of my life, and you will once again have your fallen angel in your arms."

Your grandfather breathed his last breath as he finished that sentence and he passed onto the next life with a smile on his face. Your father and I took his words to heart and tried to raise you to the best of our ability, however when your father made the vaccine I realized that the prophecy was right. Eventually, when we think you're old enough we'll be leaving you with your aunt. I'm sorry we can't stay with you, but we're going to search for a way to fix everything. If we can't, then the tools you're grandfather left me will pass into your hands and should help you survive what is to come. Please try to stay safe and protect yourself from everything the world has to throw at you. We may not see each other again so I want you to know that your father and I both love you more than anything else in this or any other world my sweet little Angelus. Try to protect those you care about and remember that those you consider family will always mater.

I love you, goodbye. Sincerely, Your Mother Sierra Angelus."

I stared at the note a while then folded it up and put it in my shirt pocket wondering what tools our family could possibly have been given that could help me now. I left the items on the table and picked up one of the chair legs then smashed it against the wall in a fit of rage. All because of the stupid drug and Genetech I'd lost just about everything. I'd lost my parents, my aunt, my uncle, even my cousin Joshua who was like a brother to me. What else could the fucking drug and this world possibly take from me! I snarled softly feeling my anger build then it just slipped away and I fell to my knees crying like a child again. I realized what my parents meant and whispered softly "I'm sorry mom, I've failed so far. I couldn't protect anyone, but not anymore. Now it's time to learn how to fight and protect those I care about."
