Trystian's gaze moved between the torrent outside and the dancing fire as the winds howling through the barren trees droned on in his ears. This blizzard had been raging on since before sunrise and hadn't shown any signs of letting up, not that it mattered to this wolf or his mate. As Trys had spent most of this quiet day going from the warming his snowy fur by the fire to gazing impassively out the window his mate, Blaze, had spent the hours reading Steinbeck's Sea of Cortez and sleeping on the overstuffed couch.

A faint rumble reached Try's ears just as he was about to slip off into sleep. Looking around for the source he noticed the immense figure curled up on the couch snoring softly. Laughing quietly to himself Trys stood from his lookout pillow and stood over his mate, just admiring his beauty before removing the worn book from his grasp and covering him in a warm cover that had been toasting by the fire.

A deep sigh escaped his lungs and he leaned back into the chair beside the fire, propping his feet up on the ottoman. The sound of his lovers soft, deep breathing lulling his own mind to sleep and the comforting warmth of the fire not helping him stay awake. He had been the only one awake for the past hours as Kinaki had never woken up for anything and still lay behind the couch.

Trystian knew he should clean up the house a little before his parents arrived, but all he saw as he looked around the room was a few woodchips dropped when lugging in the firewood, the outline of a curled up badger, and the tail of a husky still behind the couch.

"That's not to much to clean up." Trystian sighed to himself as he arose from his comforting chair walking past the sleeping forms into the kitchen. Pulling a broom out he hums silently as he tracks the chips from the back door and sweeps them away into the fire and, with a satisfied smile, returns the broom to the cupboard.

The clock across the room fills the room with a solid ring, calling out that 5:30 has arrived. The sudden sound made Trystian jump and Kinaki raise her head. Clutching his heart and leaning against the door frame he decided that it was time for the lazy badger to get up and help prepare dinner for the guests.

Trystian stood over the very peaceful badger smiling devilishly as he was going to wake Blaze up the only way he knew how. Leaning precariously over the sleeping badger he breathed lightly in his ear, giggling when it twitched, before taking the furry ear in his muzzle and shaking it like a pup. It worked and with a sudden roar Blaze was up and rubbing his ears.

Glaring sourly at Trystian he growled "Why do you always have to do that?"

"Cause it's the only way I know how to wake you Hon. Now come help me with dinner." Trys snickered before exiting into the kitchen with a swish of his lavish tail.

Giving in Blaze followed him in nearly choking from the wall of aromas wafting out of the room. Regaining his breath and looking around he saw an oven full, the range cluttered, and the fridge open, a long tail streaming out of it. He gave the tail a gentle tug before moving over to the simmering pans eyeing them tastefully.

"Do you approve?" Trys said wrapping his arms around his waist adding a clove of garlic to one of the many dishes.

"Ya know I do Trys."

Swinging around Trystian he bent down to look into the oven, turning the light on to show two covered dishes.

"Hey Hon, what are these?" Blaze asked tapping on the oven door.

"Hmm? Oh, that would be the casserole and the chicken."

"Ya remembered to marinate the chicken right?"

"Yes sweetie, I did." Trys said slightly annoyed.

"Ok Hon, what do you want me to do then?"

"Could you start making desert?"

"Mmm, Chocolate Mousse Cake. My favorite."

Quietly they both worked on their tasks. Blaze mixing the mousse ingredients and Trystian checking up on his chicken and servings, the only disturbances was the odd tick of the clock and the shuffle across the wood floors as Kinaki rearranged himself closer to the fire. Little had the busy couple anticipated Trys parents to be so close, merely pulling off the highway onto the twenty mile stretch towards the solitary cabin.

Golden eyes squinted into the distance, a black nose mere inches from the windshield, the wolfish owner leaning far over the steering wheel. The blizzard had made it very hard to drive for the large wolf and the curse of poor vision didn't help either. The fox next to him gave a worrisome glance to her husband as a rather large gust pushed the car to the left some.

He had been driving for four hours straight in this weather and it had started to take its toll on him. He was exhausted from a drive that should only take one hour or less taking up over four hours of the day. He was exhausted from constantly turning into the crosswinds and staring at walls of white.

Stopping quickly at an intersection in the rural road, he took a deep sigh, seeing the sign direct him to his son's house. He continued down the path knowing now in only a few minutes away.

Meanwhile back in the cabin, Blaze and Trys had just finished setting the table and putting out the food. Blazes cake was cooking nicely in the oven and the final dish had just been scooped into its serving tray. Trys had just finished washing his hands when the headlights passed across the window, telling of his parent's arrival.

"Hon they're here." Trys called out as he made his way to the front door.

Trystian stood at the door waiting to hear the knock, his paw hovering over the doorknob to open it as soon as he could. Hearing the knock he grabs the handle and gives it a turn. It doesn't budge for him so he pulls harder on it, causing the door to groan.

"Trys let me get that for you." Blaze chuckles as he leans over the struggling wolf and undoes the deadbolt. The door bursts open to reveal a rather tall wolf and an oddly small fox standing huddled in their jackets.

Blaze had always been bewildered by Trystian's parents. He had received the build and color of his father but his mother had given him the amazing fox markings that contrasted so well with his snow white fur. He was even more confused by Trystian's eye color. His father had soft golden eyes, while his mother had piercing black eyes, while Trys had the most vibrant green eyes Blaze had ever seen.

Mr. and Mrs. Manitoba smiled at the odd couple, Blaze smiling happily back and Trys leaning against the couch in aggravation.

"Please come in Mrs. Mani, Mr. Mani." Blaze welcomed the pair into the warm cabin.

"Be glad to dear." Mrs. Mani spoke brushing the snow off her shoulder before stepping in, her husband following behind her.

Trystian straightened up opening his arms to his mother, taking her into a tight embrace and then his father. The phone began to ring and Blaze walked off into the kitchen to answer.

"I'm glad you two could make it, it seems that this storm would have stopped anybody else." Trystian said with an excited voice.

Blaze came out wringing his hands, a worried look on his face. "Trys, that was Yesai and my Dad, they... they're stuck out on 160 in a snowdrift. They won't be able to get in until tomorrow."

"Oh, Hon, I'm Sorry. But they'll be here for our breakfast right?"

"Yeah, but they wont be here tonight." Blaze sighed deeply and sat down in the couch. Trystian sat down next to him and wrapped his arms around the depressed badger.

"Don't be so sore about it sweetie, they just couldn't make it."

"We almost didn't make it through that storm." Mr. Mani interjected.

C'mon hon. lets get dinner started." Trys cheered pulling the badger up by his paws and leading him into the dining room, the parents following at their own pace.

The table had been meticulously prepared; all the dishes had been arranged with the up most care. The napkins delicately folded, and the lights set to the perfect ambient level. It was as close to perfect as possible.

As Trys's parents entered the room their breath was taken. To them it was absolutely amazing not only the settings but the smells. The chicken, the casseroles, the dressings, all prepared to perfection.

"My My! You two have really outdone yourselves." Mrs. Mani exclaimed as her husband helped her into her chair, then taking a seat next to her.

"It's the least we could do for family, and you'll see it again tomorrow morning." And with that, Trystian opened the merlot, announcing the beginning of dinner. They ate slowly savoring the tastes that had been so delicately prepared, passing mingled conversations about their daily lives, sipping wine in a careless way. The food slowly disappeared, the fire died down, and Kinaki made his slow way to Blazes feet.

By the time the plates were pushed away and the conversation moved in front of the fire, which was being renewed by Trystian, it had passed to almost eleven o'clock and time slowly ticked by. They continued their conversations sitting around the fire, Kinaki curled up in Blazes lap and Trystian cuddling close to him. Try's parents sat across huddled together near the fire.

The clock tolled, singing its tune of one o'clock, and the end of the gathering. They said their goodbyes and head off up the stairs, Blaze and Trystian moving to their secluded room and Mr. and Mrs. Mani venturing off into their spare room.

"Don't worry hon. they'll be here as soon as you wake up. I promise." Said Trystian who had been picking up on Blazes odd mood all night.

"I'm sorry, it's just... I was really looking forward to them being here for dinner." Blaze replied, stripping to his boxers and climbing under the down comforter.

Trystian followed on the other side and pulled himself close to his mate. "There was nothing that could be done. The storm cut off their path and they just couldn't make it." He draped his arm over the badger's waist, resting his head on the slow rising chest.

"Your right love, nothing to be so upset about." His paw idly scratched along Trys's back, soft murrs coming from both of them.

"Good night sweetie."

"Good night."

The moons silver glow traced its move across the room through the night. Creeping over the sleeping pair slowly.
