Also: The Dragon's Familiar is my attempt at re-working a story I did a long time ago called A Familiar Apprentice. So if you see lots of similarities, that's why. :)

Six days passed since I met Sul'ava, the dragon mage, after trying to help her fight what she called an interdimensional life-sucking monster. Things were surprisingly normal in the days that followed, after she took me on as her familiar. We mostly walked, traveling north, though to where she had not seen fit to tell me. Sul'ava was quiet for the most part, engaging in conversation only when she felt it necessary to teach me about my new job or to give directions as to where we'd set up camp.

She told me she still wasn't sure if I had the true Gift or simply the ability to see otherworldly emanations, as many felines did, but that tonight she would attempt to discern for certain. I wasn't sure what she meant by that, but I was looking forward to finding out whether I could become a mage in my own right one day.

I liked Sul'ava. I was very glad of this opportunity and hoped it would not end poorly. I was surprised to find myself wanting to learn from her, to discover whether I had the Gift. I wanted to help her protect us from the... well, whatever those things were called.

We were traveling through a dense wooded area, where the trees grew less than a few feet apart. More than once I heard Sul'ava mutter a curse as her leather satchel stuck to a branch or her long, oscillating tail swept into a trunk. I was smaller and more nimble, so I had less difficulty in the woods. I went ahead, pulling down vines she may run into or checking for herbs and flowers she'd described as useful.

It was nearly dark by the time she called a stop and I was exhausted. I wasn't used to such strenuous travel - on my own, I'd go maybe the half the distance with plenty of stops to rest and relax. Laziness on my part, to be sure, but felines are expected to nap throughout the day.

"We'll camp here, in the clearing," Sul'ava said. "Gather wood for a fire and I'll prepare our dinner."

I headed back into the woods, staying within earshot of the mage, and gathered sticks into my arms. I thought about Sul'ava as I worked. She was so tall and powerful, with her blue scale armor naturally built into a figure of stunning beauty. Those silky scales on her front, at least the ones not hidden from view by her leathers, and the swell of her breasts... and her maleness. I found myself growing excited and frowned. Was I really attracted to Sul'ava? That may make things difficult. Mages were not known to become intimate with their students. It was seen as unprofessional. Nevertheless, it couldn't hurt to think about it. I'd never been with a herm - just one male and two females - but the prospect excited me. I wondered whether Sul'ava harbored any desires for me. In the six days we'd traveled together, I hadn't seen any sign, but still... once in a while, she'd looked at me in a certain way, when she thought I wasn't looking. Dragons are known to be inscrutable, of course, so my inability to read her emotions was about right.

I snorted at myself. Even if she were to find me attractive, I'd be so inexperienced the much more world-wise dragon would probably find me bland and uninteresting. That could lead to much awkwardness later - I'd probably end up on my own again.

I sighed and returned to camp with my bundle of firewood clasped to my chest. I set them down near the small fire Sul'ava started and added one or two to the blaze to keep it going. Delicious smells met my nostrils as the dragon set a bubbling cauldron down on the fire.

"A simple stew, but hearty," she said, glancing up at me across the fire. Her deep eyes flashed, like the white surf crashing against broken rocks. My insides churned as I realized my attraction was growing.

I swallowed hard before replying. "Thank you. It smells delicious."

We ate in silence. I stared at the fire so that I wouldn't stare at her scales. I could lose myself in their tight patterns as they rippled up and down her chest and sides. I would glance up now and again and find her eyes locked somewhere in the middle distance. She ate mechanically, slowly, and never looked anywhere else, as though she were in a trance.

When we'd finished eating, she stood and removed her cloak. She spread it on the ground like a blanket and sat down again.

"Come here, Takajit," she said, patting a spot on the cloak next to her. "It's time for your first real lesson in the magical arts. This will determine whether you have the Gift."

I nodded, but my heart fluttered as I drew near. Both her presence and the prospect of discovering whether I was fated for a magical destiny made me nervous. As I sat beside her, cross-legged, she reached over and pulled me into her lap. I was startled, but her strong hands held me tightly. I felt my rump nestle down into her groin, pressing against the meaty bulge in her lower leathers.

"Close your eyes and relax into me, Takajit," she said. "I must be close to you to guide you."

I did as she asked, reclining my head over the swell of her bosom. Her arms surrounded my chest as she held me close. I heard a thrumming, humming noise swell from her belly, eventually streaming out of her nostrils and into my ears. It was an otherworldly sound, like what I'd imagine the mermaids sang to sailors in the old stories. I realized, with some shame, that I was fully erect, but Sul'ava didn't notice or didn't care.

"Magical energy flows all around us," she said, resting her chin on top of my head. "It exists inside us as well. Eventually, you will learn to draw on the magic outside your corporeal form, but as a familiar, you will learn first to draw on your own hidden powers. Look inside yourself, Takajit... look inside..."

Something warm and hard pressed into my back, between my shoulderblades. I tried to shift, but Sul'ava held me tight.

"It's a pendant," she explained. "It will help me determine whether you are able to use the Gift. Focus, now, on my voice, and do as I say..."

It was all a bit hazy from then. I felt as though I were floating in her lap, surrounded by her essence. I could feel not just her smooth hands, her scales, the bulge of her maleness and the swells of her breasts, but also her mind, probing mine, seeking to meet me. I could smell not just her intoxicating scent, but the smell of the solar winds rushing through the universe. I felt as though all knowledge were but a hair's breath away, on the other side of an invisible veil. It was so close, I could reach out and push right through the barrier, to the other side...

"Takajit!"

The sharpness in Sul'ava's voice shocked me and I tumbled back to reality. The dragon clutched me, panting hard.

"You... you are gifted," she gasped. I squirmed in her arms as what felt like pins and needles ran up and down my body. Her heat flooded me as I felt her maleness harden against my thighs and her heaving breasts rub my backside. "I only... just stopped you... it would have been too much, too soon."

"Why... do I feel like this?" I asked, groaning as my toes curled, my fingers sprawled over her arms, my cock lurched in my pants.

"It's the energy. It's not uncommon to affect magic-users like this, especially if you're not sure how to control it."

Sul'ava draped something over my head. It hung down my shoulders and over my chest. I gasped - the stone or whatever it was felt as though it were searing my skin.

"It's the pendant," Sul'ava said, stopping me from removing it. "It will help you release excess energy safely. Give it a moment."

I groaned again and arched my back. My brain felt like it was on fire.

"Sul'ava... please... make it stop!" I gasped. I wasn't sure what was happening, only that sparks and electricity were flowing through my blood, activating my nerves. Conflicting signals shot to my brain: plain, pleasure, jealousy, anger, joy...

Strong fingers caressed my head and pulled me back, centering on my temples. Sul'ava gasped and I felt her maleness press into my lower back.

"Takajit... there's only one way now," the dragon whispered.

"One... way?" I asked. "What do I have to do?"

"Love me."

The dragon turned my head with her hand and kissed me. My eyes widened as I stared into her pupils, so huge and black, threatening to overwhelm me. I closed my eyes as her tongue pushed into my muzzle. Every touch was a fire as she pushed me down to the ground, surrounding me as we struggled on her cloak to remove our clothes. My claws scratched down her sides, though even as sharp as they were they could do no damage to her flexible hide. I tore off her top and felt the heat of her breasts spill across my chest.

Meanwhile, she'd ripped off my clothes just as dramatically. Her body undulated against mine as I pushed back, naked and aroused. I opened my eyes and saw for the first time the rivers of magical energy binding the world. Reds, yellows, greens, and blues flowed and shifted in a neverending tapestry around us, circling our bodies like silk.

I reached out, past Sul'ava's shoulder, and grasped one of the ribbons of energy in my paw. It flowed around my fingers and up my wrist, wrapping over my bicep. Sul'ava cried out and lifted me off the ground. The next thing I knew, a massive maleness pushed deep into my unprepared bottom. I clenched and screamed my passion as the fire erupted inside me. The ribbon of energy around my wrist flamed up, bright as the brightest blue, before disappearing. Sul'ava claws snagged my fur, pulling my hips down, impaling me on her stalk.

Despite its size, it didn't hurt. It felt incredible as it sawed into my guts. I couldn't tell how long it was, but I knew it was quite a bit larger than mine, which scraped across her silky belly scales with every movement between us.

I wrapped my arms behind her neck and buried my face in her chest as lust and pleasure and magic shot through us. She slammed me into the ground and humped in hard, hilting inside me with ease. I cried out again as her muzzle surrounded mine.

For the next few moments, I felt as though we were one. I couldn't tell how much time passed. We remained locked in an eternal embrace as the energy of the universe danced around us, caressing our sides and backs. Sul'ava's passionate movements drove me to ecstacy again and again; I knew she'd climaxed several times already as well, and could feel the warmth seeping down my thighs.

As quickly as the magic-induced lust came upon us, it was gone. Sul'ava lay across me, her warm body heavy and powerful. I could feel her muscles flexing against my fur as we kissed languidly.

"Mmm... I'm sorry, Takajit," she murmured.

"For what?"

"I did not prepare you enough. I did not believe you would be able to penetrate the veil between worlds with such ease... you are incredibly talented, my little tiger..."

"How... how did I do that? I just reached out for... something that wasn't there," I said, attempting to put into words the feeling I had.

The big dragon shifted and her thickness stirred my guts. I may have came again, but I couldn't tell at that point.

"You have an innate ability, but an ability that is dangerous to yourself and others," she murmured, staring at me. "I only managed to contain you, or you may have destroyed yourself, me, and this forest for twenty miles around."

I stared at her, shocked. "But surely that's not possible!"

She smiled. "You are powerful, my little tiger, and you are naïve. The magical energies have taken a liking to you. They've bound us together."

I looked around and realized she was right. The ribbons of energy I'd seen so clearly during the throes of our lovemaking were faded now, immaterial, but still there, rolling and looping around Sul'ava and me like braids of the finest cloth. I let one run over my fingers, twining between my claws.

"Not only do you have the Gift, Takajit, but you may be one of the only Light Dancers in the world."

"Light Dancer?"

"Those who can see the energy at will, play with it, use it to accomplish their goals," Sul'ava said. "There are very few and the talent is incredibly rare. And incredibly powerful. You know of Kor-Man-El-Kor?"

I shook my head. The dragon continued, still on top of me, still inside me.

"They were an ancient race, many eons ago, and from what we can tell, the most powerful Light Dancer of all time destroyed their civilization, leaving nothing but fragments for us to puzzle over now. Every mage has studied the Kor-Man-El-Kor at one point, but we know little."

"What do you mean, we're bound together?" I asked, thinking to what she'd said earlier.

"Your magic and mine... they've fused," she said, dropping her lips to caress mine. "Do you see how they twist together, forming an unbreakable bond?"

I stared intently at the ribbons wrapping around our bodies. The colors twisted together, braiding itself as they traveled. I reached out and pulled one strand apart, only to see it pull back together once I'd released. The crystal around my neck pulsed and I lifted it, gazing into the transparent blue interior, where a pale gold light briefly flashed.

"What does it mean?"

"It means fate brought us together, Takajit. I must teach you how to use your powers."

I tipped my head back, exposing my neck, letting the pendant fall to my chest. It was warm now, heavy and comfortable, as though it were part of me. The dragon's breath teased the white fur under my chin and I whimpered as her tongue slipped across my jugular. Her hips moved and I was reminded again of her size.

"Takajit," she whispered, mouth closing on mine for a kiss, "we are one..."

I don't remember much of the rest of that night. The magical energies kept us going, loving each other again and again. Sul'ava filled me many more times that night and we remained together until morning, when I woke to find her breasts warming my muzzle.

I reached out and teased a flickering, fading strand of magic, caressing it for a moment before it disappeared into the ether. Sul'ava smiled and shifted, curling around my exhausted body.

"I did not intend for this to happen, Takajit," she whispered. "I only hope you will not be unhappy now that our fates are tied together."

"Our fates are tied?"

"Tied." The dragoness smiled and kissed my cheek. "It is not your fault, or mine, but the will of the cosmos. You and I are in for an adventure, my little tiger."

I closed my eyes, still exhausted, limp and tired in her arms. "Tied," I mumbled into her neck. I reached up and pulled her down close, asleep again by the time her cheek pressed against mine.
