#2 of A failed hunter

When James awoke he noticed that a few torches were lit but only provided enough light to dimly light the room. He looked around because he felt lonely until he saw the dragoness. As he crawled towards her one thought entered his mind, "mother is here she will protect me." James stopped and had to think of why he thought that, she was not his mother. She was the reason his body was twisted and reshaped in pain, why he was reverted to a child.

He tried to stop himself from crawling towards her but it was no use he couldn't control his body. When he reached her he curled up into a ball and lay next to her. She rolled over so that one of her arms was draped around his form. When her arm made contact with him she awoke and smiled at him. She got up slowly so not to disturb him and awaken him so she could go hunt for breakfast.

When she returned she looked around to make sure no one saw and followed her back. A large buck is what she caught for breakfast, she knew that Drake would probable reject it at first but he would eventually come around and eat. She went to the bed chamber and picked Drake up to take him to breakfast. He awoke in her arms somewhat happy yet upset that it was reality. She set him down in front of the deer in hopes he would ear some. James looked at it for a bit before looking away from it, he didn't look away out of disgust but of fear he would like the raw meat.

James felt his stomach start to ache with the need for food and the only thing to eat was something meant for animals. As he crawled towards it a voice could be heard yelling into the cave. "Come out here you vile overgrown lizard for I Sir Calwin have come to slay you." Upon hearing this James was hoping that he could be rescued and returned to his normal body. His thoughts were interrupted when she picked him up again and began to walk towards the cave entrance.

"Oh brave knight you say you have come to slay me but can you really take a childs mother away." The knight carefully studied his position before replying, " once i am done with you I shall kill your child so that it can harm no one. Are you truly the one who claims the name Spira the dragon of the dark realm." James looked up in shock because he had heard horrible stories of Spira and how she slaughtered whole villages in one night. She looked down and smiled before whispering to James, " mother will be back in a few my son you can watch as you see how a dragon fights."

Spira set James down and jumped into the air before swooping down to attack the knight. The knight jumped to the left just barely missing her claws. He raise his sword to attack before she completely passed him but she wrapped her tail around part of the swords hilt prying it from his hands. Weaponless the knight prepared his shield to protect himself. Spira swooped down again claws at the ready to rip the knight into pieces.

She made a direct hit that tossed him towards the cave entrance and James. Looking for Spira and her where her next move would come from. As he looked around he spotted James sitting and watching the fight. The knight lept up and dashed towards James while pulling a knife from his left boot. He grabbed James and held the knife to his throat and then called out, "come on out I have your child hostage."

Spira landed in front of them with a small thud and some dust that was thrown up. James saw the look on her face and was somewhat surprised for she had a look of true sadness. He didn't know what came over him but he began to look for a weakness in the knights armor. The weakness was where his elbow was it was weak because there was a hole with rust around it. James bit down on that part causing the armor to shatter and for James to dig his fangs into the knights arm.

The knight dropped James and clutched his arm in pain and then readied his knife. Spira was upon him before he could even react to the feeling of claws ripping into his flesh.James just looked around clueless as to what just happened to him. Spira was covered in the Knights blood as she picked James up.She carried him back into the cave where the dead buck still lay ready to be consumed by both dragons. "Drake I am sorry you had to see me do that but you would have been killed after me." She spoke these words softly to him and continued after setting him down by the buck to eat.

"The reason I changed you was because when you came upon me when I broke my wing you helped me like I helped you." As he listened he had to think back to when he was a young boy, that is when he realized she was the one who saved him. It was this realization that prompted a change in his mind. He was an old man by human standards but she gave him a second chance at youth. She did not take anything from him he took it from himself.

James decided that he would go by his new name the one that his mother had given him. Instead of crawling Drake tried to stand, he knew how he just could not balance himself out. After a few more tries he began to balance himself out to where he could stand. He began to walk towards Spira who was happy to see he finally learned ho to walk again. She held out her arms and he walked towards her till he was embracing her in a hug.

She let him down so that he could eat some of the buck because even she could hear his stomach. Drake approached the deer again but this time instead of turning around he picked up a leg and bit into the meat. The taste was not that bad in his mind maybe the change also effected his sense of taste he wondered. Ten years went by and Drake realized everything he needed and even a few new things he did not know as a human. His mother had answered all questions he had ever asked her but the one he never asked.

Drake had always wondered why he was changed and not eaten like the people from her legend. The day would come when he would ask of it, but he was unsure of the answer he would get. However he needed to know even if he did not like the answer. He approached his mother and sat silently while he waited for her to finish what she was doing. When she finished organizing her potion ingredients she stood and turned to face him.

Before Drake could speak she spoke in her unchanging voice, " well what is it you want to

ask me Drake dear." Drake could not keep eye contact and he ended up looking at the floor while asking his question. " Mother why is it that you kept me alive and not others from the legends about you?" Spira looked at him and then motioned for him to sit down while she spoke.

"Well the legends say that I was once the most feared dragon for I would attack and slaughter whole villages. However during one attack I was closing in on a small child when she came to a wall. She turned and fell to the ground and began to cry for her mother. It was at that moment that I remembered my childhood. I never knew my mother all I knew was pain and suffering from the day I was hatched.

The day I managed to escape is the first encounter I had with, I would have eaten you but that demons stench filled the air and I left. Traveling was all I could do until I was attacked by a group of people, that is when I lost it and killed them. The moment I killed Them is the moment that I realized that humans were the weaker ones." Drake sat there little disturbed at his mothers tale but begged her to continue with it. "It was not until that girl that I realized that I had become like those I had hated. I wondered around for a few years."

"One day however there was a terrible storm hit and I though I could get through it." Spira took a deep breath before she continued on with her tale. Drake noticed that his mother seemed sad yet she had a smile on her muzzle. "However if I had not flown into that storm I would not have found you for the second time. It was because you cared for me in my weakened state that I chose you to be the one I changed to live with me as my mate or child."

Drake did not know what to think of his mothers tale because she had just said that the demon the was what saved him from being eaten. He remembered back and realized that the only time he had only seen his mothers true form once.Thinking about it made him wonder if he could change like his mother could do. Opening his mouth to speak Drako spoke that very question to her. "Mother here is another question I have for you, I have only seen your true form once my I see it." Spira smiled and answered Drakos question closing her eyes.

Her body began to grow larger, the short muzzle on her face began to expand. The fingers on her hands began to merge creating three instead of five as her thumb moved towards the back so her front paws could still grip. Her neck began to lengthen to a more serpentine appearance , as her neck so sad the horns on her head. spikes began to form on her back along the spine almost to the tail tip which was tipped in a spade. Spira now stood in her true form towering at twenty feet tall and fifteen feet long.

Drako starred in awe at his mother do to the fact that she was as attractive in her true form as her humanoid form. She looked down at Drako for a bit before she lay down and curled around Drako so that they could sleep in peace. Little did they know a caravan of soldiers were being led through the forest by a man wrapped in a torn crimson cloak that looked as if it had see a centuries of battles. There was an uneasy peace between the leader of the soldiers and the man in the cloak.

A failed hunter, A new dragon

As James walked through the woods he recalled why he was here. He wanted to be in his fathers big game hunting guild. Contrary to the name the guild members were not hunters but slayers for hire on any creature. In order to join however he first had...
