Chapter 14: Kindred Souls
Well this is exciting! I'm finally moving into the next stretch of this series and I want to thank all those who have faved, watched, left comments, or simply just viewed. I started on this site a few months ago and I've been receiving a hearty welcome since! I look forward to building a legacy as one of the greats on this site!
Update 3/13/2018: Okay so apparently there was some weird bug where this chapter wasn't showing up with the others, but I've figured out what was wrong and I've fixed it. Sorry to those who were confused why chapter 14 was just floating in space by itself!
LAURNEN KINGDOM: 19 YEARS AGO
“Who are you my child?"
“Uh . . Shirlene Bugada Yara?"
“No my child, that is not who you are! You are . . . IT!" Shirlene shrieked happily as her mother tapped her, then ran away. It wasn't everyday that the two of them got to spend time with each other, working the sands certainly kept them apart.
The younger rabbit dashed through the dunes after her mother calling out as she neared saying “I'm gonna get you mama!"
“You can try, but I'm not one to surrender so easily!" Just then Shirlene's mother came to an abrupt stop, causing Shirlene to crash into her saying “OOF! Hey why'd you stop Mama?" Shirlene stepped around her mother then covered her mouth at what she saw.
Hundreds of bodies lay face down in the sand, bloodied and bruised. Shirlene watched in horror as wolves with flamethrowers set the animals ablaze, it was then that she realized something . . . Those animals were still alive.
Ungodly shrieks could be heard from miles as men women and children screamed for mercy, screamed for water, screamed for death. Shirlene's mother quickly covered her eyes and ushered her away saying “No child should ever have to witness the killing fields. I am sorry my child. We should not have played here."
“Mama! Why were those animals screaming?"
“Do not be worried child by them Shirley. They are in a better place than we are."
“Really?"
“Of course . ." The duo began walking briskly from the execution but were stopped by a nearby guard who called out “HEY! WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE!?"
“Apologies sir. I was playing with my daughter in the Western Dunes, when we strayed too far."
The wolven guard pulled out a tablet then said “Uh huh. Name and worker's ID number."
“Shiza Yara, worker number 4467."
“Your worker's log says you were scheduled to appear before King Ton'Ja a week and a half ago for your worker's evaluation. Why did you not show?"
“My daughter was gravely ill, I put in the rescheduling request. Was I not approved?"
“It says you did no such thing, which you know is a capital offense."
“A-A c-capital offense?! Please have mercy sir! I would never intentionally disrespect the Great King Ton'Ja!"
“Then you'll have no quarrels about appearing before him immediately then."
“But we're in the middle of the Lauri Desert! May I at least take my child home first?" The wolven guard grabbed Shiza by her collar and hoisted her in the air saying “You'll do what I tell you, when I tell you slave! Do I make myself clear?"
“Y-Yes s-sir!" The guard threw her to the ground, turned away and said “You are to meet his grace in approximately 30 minutes . . . Unless you'd like to end up like the unfortunate souls over the hill." Shiza meekly shook her head no then flinched as the guard barred his fangs saying “Good. And I wouldn't be late if I were you. His grace has been in a terrible mood lately, sending animals here left and right. I'd hate for a pretty face like yours to end up burnt to a crisp."
The guard turned his gaze towards Shirlene then growled, causing the younger doe to cower behind her mother. The wolf chuckled hen left, leaving the mother and daughter alone once more. Shiza knelt down before Shirlene and said “Shirley?"
“Yes mama?"
“I have to . . . go for a little while. So I'll be gone for a couple hours."
“Where are you going mama?"
“I'll just be down at the capital building, talking to animals. Nothing for you to worry about." Shirlene nodded her head in agreement, but couldn't help feeling scared for her mother.
“Are you going to die like those other animals?"
“ . . . Of course not! You know I would never leave you! I just have to take care of this important business, and I trust you'll stay out of trouble?"
“Of course Mama!"
“Good! Well I'm off, you do know your way home correct?"
“Come on mama! I'm 6 years old for crying out loud!" Shiza chuckled at her daughter then stood up saying “Well I'm off. Go home and block the door. I'll be home for dinner, and if you're good I'll bring home that carrot stew you like!"
“MMMM! I promise to be good then!" Shiza sighed happily then turned and left. Shirlene waved goodbye and plopped down in the sand, content on watching her mother brave the dunes by herself. Once Shiza was out of sight, Shirlene stood up and made her way home. Shirlene trudged happily through the red sand, the rabbit squealed as she saw her friends playing by the town's gate.
“Hey guys! What'cha playing?" The group of friends looked over and waved the rabbit over. A small fox holding a ball said “Hey Shirley! We're playing Rebel Chasers! You wanna be on my team?"
“Sure Grus! Have you guys been out here all day?"
Grus opened his mouth to answer, but was pushed aside by a young lamb who said “Nah! We were actually in the Sangheri Square, playing in the fountain, but the grownups came and kicked us out! They always ruin our fun!"
Grus pushed the lamb back saying “Don't be such a baby! Besides, it was your fault we got kicked out anyway Fleance!"
“Hey don't push me! And besides I told you my name is . . . Ace!"
Grus and Shirlene looked at each other and fell down laughing. “It's not funny! I'm going to be a pilot one day, and that's gonna be my fly boy name! Isn't that right Shiba?" The group turned their attention to a small feline girl who was more interested in her book then her friends antics.
Fleance tapped his hoof impatiently and said “Well Shiba? Aren't you going to side with me? The expert-tastical Ace!"
“Expert-tastical is not a word Fleance."
“OOOHH!! Why you!"
The group continued laughing until a loud explosion went off. Dust and debris immediately flew through the town, making it impossible to see. The children covered their ears and fell to the ground like they had been taught in school, and waited for the all clear. They waited and waited, but it seemed like no one was going to give them the signal. Once the dust settled, the group stood to their feet, leaving Shirlene to say “look guys! Over there!"
The group turned their attention to the city square and saw a downed fighter ship. Smoke was billowing out the ship, drawing the attention of everyone in the town. A sizable crowd had gathered and watched in bated breath as the pilot emerged. Once they got a good look at his attire the entire group scattered, opting to hide inside their homes, instead of be seen with the outsider.
The kids too hid, hiding behind a stack of crates nearby, intent on listening to the stranger. “Rebel Command! Come in this is Wingman Garth Greyhound! I was shot down by the Lauren Air Battalion and I'm requesting immediate pick up!" The canine pilot walked around nervously, obviously waiting for a response.
“ BZZZT, BZZT! Garth Greyhound this is tactical support unit 14-32. We have received your request for aid and we will send a pickup unit to your coordinates in approximately . . . 4 hours."
“Four Hours!? I don't have Four hours! I don't even have four minutes! I have to get this intel back to rebel command, or we'll be toast!"
“We're doing the best we can! I would suggest you Hide out in a local's place until we can extract you, until then _ _ you're on your own. Good luck soldier."
“T-That's it then . . . It's over." The canine pilot slumped down and sat against his ship, burying his head between his legs. The group of kids looked between each other, clearly conflicted on what they should do.
“Okay listen up because I know you softies are thinking about it. We can't help him!"
“What?! Why not Fleance? The guards will get him if we don't help!"
“Think for a second Grus! What will happen if they find us helping him?! They'll be here any second now anyway!" Shiba peeked over her book and said “If I may interject, I believe we can usher him to safety, whilst also keeping ourselves safe as well. If you all do recall, we do have a secluded hide out on the edge of the East Dunes. We could move him and his ship to our clubhouse, and keep him there for the four hours."
Grus shook his head in agreement saying “That's why you're the smart one Shiba! What do you say to that Fleance?"
“I say it's a terrible idea! But you all know the rules, Shirlene is our leader, so she'll make the call. What's it gonna be Shirl?"
The young doe looked at the crying canine and shook her head saying “I know I'm gonna regret this later . . . Alright you babies! We got a class five emergency! Now we've never covered such a huge problem before, but if we work together I know we can help him! So here's the plan! Fle- I mean Ace will go around the corner and lead the guards away, while Shiba will mask the smoke. Grus, and I will get the guy outta here! You know the plan, so I don't want any mess ups! Team C . . . BATTLE STATIONS!"
The kids nodded their heads in agreement then took off towards the pilot. Fleance ran ahead like planned, leaving the rest of them with very precious minutes to get going. Shirlene ran towards Garth yelling “HEY YOU MISTER! GET OFF YA BUM!" The canine pilot looked at the child and said “Wha?"
Shirlene shook her head saying “Listen pal, we don't got time for questions and junk. We're gonna get you outta here, but we need your help too pal! Can you walk?"
“W-Well yea but?"
“Okay that's good enough for me! Shiba how's your task going?"
The calico cat sat atop the ship rewiring several panels then said “I've effectively stopped the outflow of smoke. We should be able to move without a target now."
“Can you get it off the ground?"
“Let me see . . . Yes! Hover function activated! It'll be much easier to push it now Shirl!"
“That's what I'm talking about! Grus go grab that tarp and Sharabi! We'll need a disguise for our friend here!"
“On it boss!" The energetic fox ran and grabbed the massive covering, throwing it over the ship saying “Ship is masked boss! Oh here mister! You'll wanna blend in." The confused pilot took the disguise and put it on over his clothes. The dog fighter raised his hand meekly and asked “A-Am I dreaming?"
“You will be if you don't listen to us! Now we're gonna push this monster outside of city limits. You'll need to act natural and . . . No talking! You're weird off world accent will give it away. The story is we're junkers, looking to make a quick buck by salvaging in the Eastern dunes. Got that guys?"
The cat and fox nodded excitedly while Garth shook his head no.
“Don't worry pal! You think you're the only animal we've smuggled out this dump? You'll be fine! We're in the middle of nowhere, and the nearest garrison is like 30 minutes away." Shirlene and Grus got behind the ship and said “Ready!"
Shiba pressed a few more buttons on the ship's top panel and said “I'm ready as well. Start pushing guys." The two children nodded their heads and began shoving the vehicle with all their might. The vehicle gave under the children's weight, surprising the pilot even more.
“I-I d-didn't know it could do that!"
“There's a lot you probably don't know! So why worry about that when you could help us push!?!" Catching the hint, the canine got behind his ship and helped the children push, with their combined might they had pushed the ship well out of the town and into the desert. The trio pushed for another 20 minutes until Shirlene said “Alright Mister, we're here!"
Garth stopped pushing and put his paws on his knees saying “ *huff* W-Where *huff* A-Are we?"
“This sir is our head quarters! Welcome to the C Wing!" Garth rubbed his eyes several times making sure he was seeing was actually real. Before him lay a massive freight ship, rusted beyond belief and gray in color. It was decorated with childish things like rainbows and flames, giving it an odd homey feeling. Garth kept walking around, admiring the massive ship, until Shirlene said “Come on Mister! We still need to get your ship inside the docking bay!"
The trip returned to pushing and successfully got the beast inside the C Wing's dock. Once that was completed, Shirlene led the rebel pilot inside and took him to the bridge saying “So . . . What do you think? Pretty cool huh? We found this thing all broken down and in need of love, so we all got together and made her our clubhouse!"
“Her?"
“Yea! Can't you tell? C Wing say hi!" Just then the ship sprang to life, turning on its instruments and said “GREETINGS SHIRLENE! I TAKE IT YOU FOUND MORE SUPPLIES WHILE OUT AND ABOUT?"
“You got it Computer! Oh and we found this pilot guy too! Don't know he'd make a good forward accelerator though!"
“Forward Accelerator? This thing can fly?! "
“Of course she can fly . . . Well eventually. Computer says she still needs several parts before she can become fully operational again, but we're committed to seeing this through!" Garth stepped forward to the ship's console and began pressing several buttons, until he received a nasty shock.
“OWW!! WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?!"
“Sorry Mister. C Wing's pretty picky about who touches her main console. What do you need her for?"
“I need to send my unit my coordinates so they can pick me up! Can't you give me override access?"
“Well I could but . . . It's better if you ask C Wing. Your manners are poor."
“You can't be serious! I have to ask this hunk of junk for permission!?" The C Wing's console sparked and shot off more electricity making Garth jump back in fright.
“Fine! Uh Computer ma'am? Can I please use your global locator to contact my unit?"
“ . . . REQUEST AWKNOWLEDGED. YOU MAY PROCEED AIRMEN GARTH."
The canine pilot stepped forward and began sending his position. “This is Airmen Garth Greyhound, reporting to support unit 14-32."
“This is support unit 14-32 we received your coordinates Garth. Don't worry about a thing. Armored transports will be there to escort you home."
“Thanks 14-32. Signing out!" Once he was finished he turned to the children and asked “Well now what?"
Shiba walked past him, reached under the C Wing's console saying “Well I'd advise you staying here. Shirlene and I are going to go dismantle your ship and put those parts to good use."
“What!? You can't take apart my ship! Y-You're only like . . . 5?!"
“Actually Sir I am 7, while Shirlene is 6, but I digress. It's not like you can utilize your ship in its current state. You should be thankful that we even took you in anyway."
Garth opened his mouth to respond but couldn't produce words. All he could do is watch as the cat and rabbit grabbed various tools and went to town on his beautiful ship. The canine pilot looked for the fox, but found the child fast asleep in a bean bag chair. Garth looked at the main console and approached it tentatively, he took a careful seat in the captain's chair and said “Sooo . . . C Wing? What's your story? Who's your manufacturer?"
“INFORMATION IS . . . CLASSIFIED."
“Aw come on! It's not like I got anyone to talk to, besides I'm actually curios. Who created you? I've never seen an A.I so . . . personalized. My ship's on board computer barely acknowledges me when I get in."
“IN ALL HONESTY I CAN NOT RECALL WHO CREATED ME, BUT I DO REMEMBER WHAT HAPPENED TO ME. I WAS TASKED WITH THE DELIVERY OF WATER TO LAUREN, SOME 3 THREES AGO. THE LOCAL MILITIA THOUGHT IT WAS A TERRORIST THREAT AND SHOT ME DOWN. I WAS DISMANTLED, MY CARGO STOLEN, AND MY SHIP SALVAGED. BUT ENOUGH ABOUT ME MY CURIOSITY LIES WITH YOU. JUDGING BY YOUR ATTIRE I ASSUME YOU ARE A RECONNAISSANCE PILOT CORRECT?"
“Yea I'm with the Alterian rebel force on Garren. My mission was simple! All I had to do was fly over the capital and take some aerial photos, but nooo!! I get shot down by the Lauren Air Guard! I was this close to getting by unscathed!"
“THAT IS NOT YOUR ONLY MISSION IS IT PILOT?" "
“How'd you know?"
“I AM A COMPUTER. I HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF STANDARD MILITARY PRACTICES . . . AND YOU DID MENTION INTELWHAT WAS YOUR OTHER DIRECTIVE?"
“Well me and the squad picked up several vital pieces of intel, regarding the enemy's defenses. Rebel command thinks we got a shot to stick it to them! Say can I uh . . Plug this drive into you? I actually haven't seen the data."
“INSERT DRIVE IN PORT NUMBER THREE."
Garth did as he was told and waited as the C Wing read the drive. The computer made a few noises then brought up a holographic image of town, with several weak points outlined in red.
“THESE ARE SCHEMATICS FOR THE LAUREN CAPITAL. YOUR COMPANY IS PLANNING ON ATTACKING THE CAPITAL?"
“I guess so. Wow! I had no idea the capital had all these blindspots! It'll be easy to fly in from the North and stick it to em!"
“YOU DO REALIZE THAT THIS PLAN WOULD ENDANGER THE LIVES OF MILLIONS UPON MILLIONS OF ANIMALS? TO PREFORM AN AIRSTRIKE OF THIS MAGNITUDE WOULD OBLITERATE APPROXIMATELY 47% OF THE POPULATION."
“Small price to pay in war. If we can take out this major city, then the Lauren authorities will have no choice but to give in to our demands! I think this plan's got a great chance of success!"
“ I AM NOT A WARTIME STRATEGIST, BUT I DO BELIEVE THIS MOVE WOULD CAUSE SERIOUS RAMIFICATIONS FOR YOUR UNIT. ODDS OF SUCCESS ARE . . . 57.8%"
“Well those are numbers I can live with! Say what's the story behind those kids in there? I've never seen children who can work on warships, I mean I can barely do a flight pre check without screwing it up! How'd they get to be so smart at such a young age?"
“THE CHILDREN ARE A SPECIAL BREED I WOULD SAY. FROM MY EARLIEST ENCOUNTERS WITH THEM, I KNEW THEY WERE ABNORMAL. SHIRLENE AND SHIBA ARE PRODIGIES AT AEROSPACE DESIGN. THEY WERE THE ONES WHO RESTORED MY SYSTEMS WHEN I CRASHED HERE. THEY CONTINUALLY BRING SPARE PARTS HERE TO GET ME FLIGHT CAPABLE AGAIN."
“Did you teach them how to fix you up and stuff? Like how do they know to take parts from my ship and add them to you? They're only six for God's sake!"
“SIX AND SEVEN AIRMEN, BUT YES. EVEN WITH THEIR NATURAL
“I DID INSTRUCT THEM ON HOW TO PROPERLY WORK ON VESSELS SUCH AS MINE. I'VE BEEN WORKING WITH THEM FOR TWO YEARS AS OF TODAY. I CAN FEEL THEM NOW, TAMPERING WITH MY LINEAR DRIVE MOTORS, FIGURING OUT WAYS TO WORK AROUND WITH THEIR LIMITED RESOURCES."
“That's incredible! My pre mission brief said that most of the local children were illiterate thieves who would rob me blind if I turned my back on them."
“DO NOT BE DECIEVED PILOT. THESE CHILDREN ARE EXTREMELY CLEVER AND WILL RESORT TO THIEVERY. THERE ARE PARTS IN ME THAT THEY'VE STOLEN FROM FEDERAL WARSHIPS. _ _
“Federal ships!? How'd those little ankle biters even close enough to do something like that?!"
“I AM NOT CERTAIN, BUT I CAN SAY THAT I AM GRATEFUL. IT DOES MY HARD DRIVE GOOD KNOWING SOMEONE HAS NOT ABANDONED ME."
“Super intelligent children and sentient cargo ships. I'm gonna have one hell of a time explaining today to my superiors." Garth exhaled happily then reclined back in the chair saying “It's still weird how those kids can do all that, but I guess it's a strange world out there huh?" The C Wing's brought up a holographic image of the capital and said
“ALERT! ALERT! ALL PERSONNEL TO THE BRIDGE. ALERT! ALERT!" Garth shot up from his chair and began pressing random buttons, desperately trying to get the alert to stop. The panicked pilot shrieked as Shirlene, Shiba, and Grus tackled him, punching and kicking without signs of stopping.
“OWW!! YOU LITTLE BRATS!! I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING!! OUCH!! STOP THAT!!"
“Oh? Wait stop guys! He's telling the truth! Computer! Mission report!"
“DETAILING MISSION REPORT SHIRLENE . . . SEVERAL A-45 FIGHTER PLANES HAVE ENGAGED THE LAUREN CAPITAL. THEIR DAMAGE OUTPUT HAS TOTALLED TO APPROXIMATELY 7.5%"
“My mom's in capital! I have to go and save her!"
“I WOULD NOT ADVISE THAT SHIRLENE! YOUR CHANCE OF SURVIVAL SIGNIFICANTLY DECREASES WHEN YOU ENTER THE CAPITAL. I PROJECT A CIVILLIAN CASUALTY OF AROUND 13,000."
Garth shook his head confused and said “How are they attacking this early!? I haven't even delivered the schematics yet!"
“I BELIEVE YOUR SUPERIORS ALREADY HAD THIS ATTACK PLANNED. YOU AND YOUR FORMER SQUAD MUST HAVE BEEN USED A DECOYS TO DIVIDE THE LAUREN AIR GUARD'S ATTENTION."
“N-No! That can't be!! You mean I lost my team for this?!"
“WELCOME TO THE REBELLION AIRMEN." Shirlene pushed past the stunned Garth and said “Computer! We have to do something!! If we just sit here my mama could get hurt!"
“APOLOGIES SHIRLENE, BUT THERE IS NOTHING I CAN DO. I AM NOT FLIGHT CAPABLE AND I HAVE NO WAY TO RETALIATE AGAINST THE ATTACK. ALL WE CAN DO IS HOPE FOR THE BEST."
“Hope!? We can't just sit here and h- Wait?! Where's Fleance! Did he come back yet!?" The children looked around and noticed the absence of the sheep boy. “Maybe he stopped at that candy shop he likes so much? You know he's a sucker for grass flavored lolly pops!"
Shiba grabbed her book and smacked Grus with it saying “That candy shop is inside the capital you ninny! Fleance is probably stuck in the attack too! Shirlene we have to do something!"
The children and pilot turned to the rabbit for guidance, leaving her to squirm under their gazes. Shirlene looked back at the computer and said “I-I think I got an idea! We should be able to call the attack off if we tap into their radio frequency! Hey mister! You know your command's call sequence don't you?"
“Well yea? But I'm just a pilot! No officer in Rebel command's gonna lister to a fly boy like me!"
“Don't worry! They don't gotta listen! We just need their coordinates! The C Wing knows this really cool trick where she can mess with stuff just by tapping into someone else's radio frequency! Can't you C Wing!"
“AFFIRMATIVE SHIRLENE. THOUGH IF YOU ARE ATTEMPTING TO DO WHAT I THINK YOU ARE, THIS PLAN COULD HAVE DIRE CONSEQUENCES ATTACHED TO IT."
“I know I know!! But what choice do we have!? Just do it already!!" The young doe pushed the canine pilot to the computer and ushered for him to call his base.
“I don't see where this is going, but you're the boss I guess? Come in Rebel Command! This is Airman Garth Greyhound! R.D code 9086."
“BZZZT! Airman Garth Greyhound this is rebel command, what is the nature of your call?" The pilot nervously looked off at the children and there reassuring faces before he said “I am calling regarding the current attack on the Lauren Capital I . . . Have intel that . . . Several anti aircraft missiles have been deployed!"
“We have received no such intel? How have you learned this?" The pilot looked off again and noticed the computer downloading something and said “Well . . . It's not hard to see with all the forward artillery pointing towards the capital! I can literally see the cannons lined up now!"
“DOWNLOAD COMPLETE. COMMENCING COUNTERSTRIKE!" _ _
REBEL COMMAND: GARREN OUTPOST
“Sir!! We have a serious problem!!"
“What is it private?"
“O-Our ballistic missiles are firing!"
“Wha?! How is that possible?! Has someone here started the initiation sequence?"
“No sir! They're being remotely manipulated!"
“Damn it! Where is the signal beaming from?"
“It's beaming from some remote location on Lauren! Exactly where one of our agents, Garth Greyhound is."
“End transmission with him! He probably doesn't know his terminal is being tampered with!"
C WING
“They ended the transmission guys! I hope that helped."
“WORRY NOT AIRMAN. I HAVE UTILIZED YOUR COMMAND CENTER'S AIRSTRIKE CAPABILITIES TO SEND SEVERAL MISSILES TO LAUREN."
Shirlene piped up saying my mama's in the capital building! Can you make sure the missiles don't hit there!"
“I WILL DO MY BEST SHIRLENE, BUT THERE IS NO GUARANTEE THAT I CAN DO T-"
“PROMISE ME C WING!!"
“I AM A FREIGHTER SHIP, I AM INCAPABLE OF PROMISING."
“Promise me C Wing!!"
“ . . . I PROMISE SHIRLENE."
“I believe in you C Wing . . . I believe . . ."
PRESENT: UNKNOWN LOCATION
“Ugghh . . . What happened?" Shirlene slowly opened her eyes, squinting as she struggled to see in the dark room. The rabbit could make out three figures in the small room, two of which definitely being the royal sisters. Shirlene closed her eyes and pretended to still be unconscious, intent on listening.
“It makes no sense Kiza! We've been here in this blacklisted room for a full day now and we still know nothing!"
“Well maybe if some impulsive wolfess hadn't beat our only source of information to a pulp! We'd might have some semblance of a clue!"
“Well maybe if your 'healing' powers worked, she'd already be awake!"
“My healing powers do work! It was your idiocy that's been slowing her recovery down!"
“Forget this!! What I want to know is who this is!? There are only four regal wolves I can think of and this impostor is not one of them!?"
“Sister! Calm yourself, that could easily be white body die!"
“White body die!? Sister look at him!! He's the same shade of white as us! Who is this knave!?"
“His profile says . . . He's K'Yulla Argada of the Unmari kingdom? Very strange that a wolf of his color and would live in the jungles of Unmari."
“I think an impostor like him should hang for his crimes! Impersonating the royal family is a global offense! Everyone knows this!"
“Maybe he was just born like that! You don't know the circumstances!"
“I know we're wasting time like this! Give it a rest already Kiza!" The two sisters continued arguing until the guard in the room piped up saying “Uh . . Excuse me ma'ams?"
“WHAT!?"
“Uh well your father is on the line and he doesn't sound too happy." Kiza quickly leapt for the transmitter and said “Hello Father! Apologies about the wait father! Kira and I have been doing some . . . sisterly bonding?"
“That's nice and all daughter, but did you forget what today is?"
“Of course not father! Today's the K-Kingdom R-Rally . . ."
“So nice of you to remember. The ceremony begins in 30 minutes, and our kingdom will be honoring your return. I would hate for you to miss your own spotlight."
“Of course not Father! Sister and I will leave immediately!"
“Very good daughter. I expect your presence very soon then. Kyoto out . ."
“Well sister!? What did father say?"
“He's expecting us at the ceremony is 30 minutes! We have to leave now!" Kira looked over at Shirlene then said “Well what about the rabbit?! Who will watch her with us gone?"
“The guard will Kira!! We have to leave now! You there, you're in charge with us gone! Watch the prisoner and make sure she doesn't leave!"
“Yes ma'am!" Kiza and Kira grabbed their weapons and reports then left abruptly, leaving the nervous guard with Shirlene. The rabbit smiled darkly then tilted in her chair, falling over in the process. The frightened guard pointed his rifle at Shirlene and said
“Hey! Uh are you . . okay!?" The guard poked Shirlene with his rifle then set it down. He grabbed Shirlene's chair and tried standing it up, but the rabbit surprised him by flipping the chair on top of him. He screamed and fell under the weight, effectively breaking the chair in the process. As soon as she was free, Shirlene began beating upon the poor guard, delivering blow upon blow to his body.
Shirlene rolled between his legs then hopped in the air, kicking him in the back. The guard flew forward and crashed into the wall, knocking himself out.
“I just love rookies! Now for the light switch . . ." The rabbit flipped a switch on the nearby wall, illuminating the room and revealing the sister's plan.
“What the hell were these two up too?" Shirlene walked over to a whiteboard covered in pictures of animals. The rabbit recognized a few of them from previous contracts, but most she had never seen before. Shirlene glossed over the board then stopped as she saw Jeeve's picture with a question mark over it. Though it wasn't his picture that raised concern, it was the portraits surrounding his. The rabbit looked over at the table and noticed her communicator lying there. She grabbed it and quickly called the C Wing saying consistencies
“Computer! Come in are you there!?"
“I AM HERE CAPTAIN! ARE YOU OKAY? I LOST TRACK OF YOUR VITAL SIGNS 22.7 HOURS AGO."
“Thank you for the concern, but I need a pickup stat! Along with a scan of those profiles I downloaded. Something's bugging me about a few of those guys.
“I'VE SENT THE YIFFING YACHT TO A CANAL CLOSE TO YOUR LOCATION, COORDIANTES ON YOUR WRIST CAPTAIN. I HAVE ALSO RAN SCANS ON EVERY PROFILE YOU'VE SENT BACK TO ME AND I HAVE FOUND SEVERAL CONSISTENCIES BETWEEN THE PROFILES."
“Well lay em' on Computer!"
“WELL I HAVE DETERMINED THAT ALL APPLICANTS MINUS CAPTAIN JEEVE ARE AFFILIATED WITH OUTSIDE THE ALTERIAN CIRCLE."
“So there'll all from outta town? What's wrong with that?"
“NOTHING ON IT'S OWN, BUT MOST OF THEM ARE FROM EITHER THE GARREN OR MANDALA KINGDOMS."
“Those are rebel infested kingdoms . . . Wait a minute! What's the common occupation between all of them?"
“THEY ALL HAVE DIFFERENT OCCUPATIONS, ON FILE BUT WITH A DECRYPTION KEY IN PLACE I HAVE DETERMINED THAT THE COMMON OCCUPATION IS EITHER PYROTECHNICIAN OR EXPEDIONIST."
“So these guys are movers and boomers . . . Oh my God! Computer how ling til' the Kingdom Rally starts!?"
“THE OPENING CEREMONY IS IN 15 MINUTES!"
“Damn! Alright I'm outta here, warn the kid!"
“ISSUING EMERGENCY MESSAGE CAPTAIN."
KORCEN KINGDOM RALLY: PLAYER'S CAMPGROUND
Jeeve groggily waltzed around the campgrounds, ignoring the looks he was receiving. He had no idea why, but ever since he'd gotten here, he'd been receiving weird looks from everybody. He chalked it up to being the new guy around, but the stares were starting to get to him. Jeeve had heard the games were starting soon, but he had no idea where. He would go around asking animal after animal, but each one just gave him a surprised stare as if they had never seen a white wolf before.
Jeeve was about to give up asking when his wrist communicator began vibrating violently “Whoa! Where's the fire Computer?"
“SHIRLENE HAS ISSUED A CODE 4 EMERGENCY. YOU WILL NEED TO RETURN TO THE C WING IMMEDIATELY FOR DEPARTURE."
“We're leaving? Well about time, this plan sucked! I had to sleep outside for nothing!"
“CAPTAIN YARA IS ON HER WAY BACK TO THE C WING AND I HAVE ALREADY PREPPED FOR TAKE OFF."
“Okay that's all fine, but what's the rush? Is something wrong?"
“CAPTAIN YARA HAS NOT DIVULGED WHY SHE'S IN SUCH A RUSH TO LEAVE, BUT I BELIEVE IT HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH WHO ARE PARTICIPATING IN THE KINGDOM RALLY."
“Patch me through to Shirlene."
“CONTACING . . . CONTACTING . . . CONTACTING . . . Yo!"
“Shirlene! What's going on?!"
“Kid get outta there now!!"
“Why!?"
“I think there's a bomb in the stadium! I'm trying to run a thermal scan on the area, but I ain't taking no chances."
“A bomb?! Shouldn't I do something!?"
“NO!! How many times do I gotta tell you that you can't expose yourself! The world doesn't know about you and we're gonna keep it that way!"
“No Shirl! Hiding is not the answer! I got a second chance to do something actually worth while! I won't run and hide, just because I'm the last of my kind!"
“Do you hear yourself!? I will not have you risking your life for those snobs in Korcen! Get your fluffy behind down to this ship pronto!"
“Shirlene I have to find the bomb. Innocent people are gonna suffer if I just run away. I lost my family because people ran away! I'm not gonna let the same thing happen again!"
“You are too much sometimes you know that? Fine!! We'll do the right thing . . . Here's what I know. The bomb is somewhere inside the central stadium, but that in itself is like 4 and half miles of people and events! I can't pinpoint it! The area's too hot!"
“Well I don't know anything about bombs, but what if the bomb's a cooled bomb?"
“Don't follow kid."
“I mean what if instead of looking for a hot point, look for the coldest thing in the area! If I were hiding the bomb, I wouldn't want authorities to find it."
“That's actually genius! I've just ran a scan and I think you're on to something. There's a spot right under the royal seating area that's freezing below zero. Whatever it is, it's not good. Find it and get rid of it before it goes off."
“How long do I got?
“You got like 9 minutes til' the ceremony starts!"
“Don't worry about me! Just give me the location and I'll take care of it!"
“I've already sent the coordinates. Good luck kid and stay out of trouble."
“Hear ya loud and clear Shirlene!" The wolfess turned his head toward the main event center saying “Look out Korcen! Here I come!"
MAIN EVENT CENTER STADIUM: ROYAL SEATING AREA
It was a rare sight when the entire world power's were together. The world's leaders rarely met anymore, mostly due to not really having a reason to meet, but today that all changed. The Kingdom's rulers sat organized by most powerful kingdom and it was no surprise that the Kydon Kingdom sat in full view of everyone else.
Kyoto watched the athletes get ready with mild interest, he always found regular animals intriguing. Their outlook on life drastically differed from his, but that was to be expected, He was after all a demigod. The giant wolf turned his attention to his two daughters, both of whom were bust chatting away. Kyoto looked at Kiza then Kira and shook his head, he always wondered where he had gone wrong with her.
He liked to blame Lizal for her poor upbringing, but deep down he knew the truth . . . The regal wolf shook himself out of deep thought and sighed as his adviser tapped him.
“Yes Reginald?"
“My king. It is time for you to open the ceremony."
“Thank you Reginald." The regal wolf stood to his feet and marched off towards the balcony. Kyoto looked out in the crowd, scanning all the smiling faces, the warm greetings, and cheering fans. The wolf shook his head and started the ceremony saying
“Welcome one and welcome all to this year's Kingdom Rally in the beautiful Korcen Kingdom. As you all know I am Kyoto Kydon, humble ruled of the modest Kydon Kingdom and it brings me great pleasure to open this year's games."
Jeeve darted and dashed through the shadows, weaving and bobbing past guards.
“Shirl. I'm at the location, but I don't see anything!"
“Hold up . . . Get outta there now! You're right under the royal sky box!"
“Yea I guessed. I can hear Kyoto's booming voice now. Say doesn't it bother people how he's the only one that walks on all fours?"
“No time for being philosophical! That bomb can go off any second now!"
“I know, but are you sure you can't find it!? I'm right where you told me to be!"
“I gave you the coordinates, it was your job to find the bomb! Just forget it! The only people that'll get hurt are the royals, so all in all it's big win in my opinion."
Jeeve angrily kicked some dust around saying “It's not fair! I should've d- I see the bomb Shirl!"
“Where's it at!?"
“Like 50 feet in the air! It's strapped up to the bottom of the Sky Box! I'm gonna get it down."
“Don't be stupid kid! That thing's probably gonna go off any second now!"
“End transmission computer . . . I got this!" Jeeve took a few steps back then burst into a full sprint. The wolf leapt high into the air, but didn't quite make the distance. The hero fell back and grabbed onto one of the support beams, hanging on with dear life. Jeeve looked up and saw the bomb was only a couple of feet away, but he also saw how much time was left.
“45 seconds!? Oh Lord have mercy!"
“I know this sport can be gruesome at times, and that's why I commend those that volunteer for this dangerous activity. And while on the subject of honoring people, I'd like to honor my eldest daughter Kiza Kydon. Kiza dear would you step forward?" The oldest wolfess stepped forward and waved at the crowd, eliciting even more joyous applause.
“Well I honestly don't know what to say? I'm speechless! Thank you everyone, no really thank you! I know I've come home at a really bad time, when terrorist attacks are seemingly everyday, but I promise this! As long as I'm here these attacks will stop!" Just then the crowd's applause rose to thunderous decibels, everyone excited at the new prospect. Kiza took a bow and continued saying “Yes I know it sounds like a lofty promise, but it's true! The attacks are over!"
Or so she thought because it was then at that moment that the world became black and covered in smoke.
