With all that out of the way, Let us begin our tale of Saint Patrick's Day.
Have you ever felt like a holiday was a waste of time and energy and thus didn't celebrate it? I've felt that way about most holidays; however my body Jordan always made me help him celebrate Saint Patrick's Day. When we were younger it would be with a pair of beers from his old man and under close adult supervision. Now that we were over the legal drinking age however, he wanted to celebrate it properly as he put it. Just like we'd celebrated our birthdays I figured, but this time I got to have a say in what went on, where we did what, and how we did it.
I think he only agreed cause that was the only way I was going to pay for the booze he wanted. No surprise there, since his mom had left on Saint Patrick's day when he was seven I understood his drinking extra on it. Before I continue this tale any further I guess I'd best explain a bit about myself, and my buddy Jordan. I'm five foot nine, light skinned, and have dirty blonde hair, and am very lean in build. Jordan's six foot two, muscle bound as hell, has bright red hair, and is docile and can be despite all that. I on the other hand am a fighter, get into all sorts of trouble, and owe him for bailing my ass out. My name is Jake Wolf, his is Jordan Riley. We've been best friends since we were three years old and our parents introduced us to each other.
Up until he hit puberty Jordan was a docile little kid who tended to be slightly shorter than your average kid and was very quiet. Id defended him up till we turned thirteen where I became the average height kid and he was defending me by backing me up. We had our first drink of alcohol when we were seven, see I was born November of the year before Jordan who was born at the end of January. When we were seven on Saint Patrick's Day Jordan's mom left for no apparent reason. Most of the town thought it was because of his dad being a drunk, but in all honesty she'd dealt with that and he was a happy drunk not an angry drunk. He'd never hit anyone unless they insulted his friends or family and even then he'd resort to words before fists.
No the reason Jordan's mom left was and still is a mystery. However Jordan's dad said he'd always expected her to eventually leave and that he'd just wished she'd stayed longer. That day Jordan swore he'd never leave his friends or family unless he was forced to. I'd agreed with him on that day and we'd stood by each other ever since. I'd guarded his back and he'd guarded mine. Then every Saint Patrick's Day we'd have a drink to remember our promise. On our fourteenth birthday Jordan had gotten his first taste of hard liquor and it revealed that his true nature was the same as his father. All it did was make him giggle a little bit. That day I got into the most trouble I'd been in, in years. I got into this major fight with a kid from down the street who said something about Jordan's mom. I heard his comment and snapped.
You see Jordan's mom, Lisa, was one of the few people I'd seen as family before she'd vanished. Whenever anyone said anything about her I got touchy but to outright insult her as the other kid had, when I'd had a bit of liquor in me, I was going to kill him. Jordan pulled me off and made sure I didn't get myself into too much trouble then made me apologize before dragging me back to his old man's and thanking me. I asked him why he was thanking me when I'd had to be saved by him. His exact response was "For standing up for my mom when no one else would." I'd been floored by his response and could only respond with a simple "My pleasure."
The next seven years were full of stress for me, relaxation for Jordan who was an ace student. See I was smart, still am in truth, but have a bad habit of slacking where Jordan's a hard worker who refuses to stop until the job's finished. It's why he worked part time at his dad's construction company while I wandered around my parent's place writing down my useless story ideas and reading novels on mythical creatures. By the end of our junior year I knew everything there was to know about vampire legends, werewolf myths, kitsunes, and Japanese demons of many types, shape shifters, and elves. Jordan on the other hand had bulked up, and was a top class student. I also had drawers full of short stories.
By the end of that summer he had me lifting weights and getting in shape while he cracked the books. He would have made me crack the books, since the physical training was punishment for not getting passing grades in half my classes however I'd aced home school so he was punishing me in a more fitting way in his own opinion. I didn't complain about it since I'd wanted to bulk up a bit, and my already lean frame gained a small amount of muscle mass that showed whenever I flexed by the end of that summer.
The following year we both aced all our classes and Jordan became class Valedictorian while I just managed to get a good enough review to get into college. We decided on the local school so we could get our base degree then from there we'd move on to a bigger university. That had been the plan anyway, instead we finished our two years and Jordan worked for his dad's company while I ended up on disability because I had schizophrenia. Go figure. Heck I'm amazed I even remember all this, but then again for some reason Jordan helps my memory, guess that's one thing close friends are there for.
Anyway back to the present I guess. The two of us were sitting in the back of Jordan's truck about to get the alcohol and Jordan suddenly asked me "What's the plan?" I grinned slightly and said "We are going to celebrate at a ruin I found." He stared at me with a look of pure trepidation and I said "I know, I know. Last time we were at any ruins we nearly died, but this time will be different I promise. We'll be entering a former archeology dig sight. With that said you can bring all the booze you want but it's just the two of us. No girls, no gang, no contractors." He nodded in acceptance and I sighed softly in relief glad he was willing to at least give in that much.
We walked into the liquor store and I handed Jarod fifty bucks which he added to the hundred he'd taken from his recent paycheck and the two of us started getting different alcohols. Jarod got about twenty different types of alcohol while I just spent twenty bucks of my own money on a few boxes of beer which was amazingly cheap at the store thanks to the holiday. We carried it all out to the truck and headed out toward the ruins with Jarod telling me how awesome the night was going to be. I stopped him and said "Let's go to your dad's place for the start of the night and bug him and your other friends so I don't have to hear you complain when it's just the two of us."
Jarod agreed easily before taking us over there. When we got there I was pulled into a bear hug by Jarod's old man Mike, who ran the business, before having my hand shaken by Tom, head carpenter, Larry, Head sheet rocker, Jim, head electrician, and Tory, Jarod's sister and the head overseer alongside Jarod. She smiled at me and I said "Hey Tor, how's life been?" She shrugged and replied "Same old, same old. Dad assumed you two weren't going to show up. What changed your mind?" I motioned her closer then explained in a whisper "Jarod would have moaned if we didn't visit so I figured let him start getting drunk here, then finish at the archeological dig sight I found."
She slowly nodded in understanding and asked "What have you figured out about that place anyway, any idea on why it was abandoned?" I shrugged and said "nothing I can find, it almost looks like the team planned on staying for the long haul then just up and vanished one day. Hell some of their gear is still there. I want to check the place out to satiate my own curiosity more than anything." She nodded again, this time in acceptance of what I was saying, and the two of us walked back to where everyone else was partying. I watched the crew and nursed a single beer throughout the part while Jordan damn near got drunk. Luckily I was driving so it wouldn't have mattered if he did or not.
Suddenly I was pulled aside by Mike who said "Ever hear of the little people?" I nodded and he said "They dun like the smell of human's who are drunk. Remember that lad. You see where you're going; their ruins made by those that came before us. The little people and all their friends are the ones who made those ruins." I stared at him and said "You sure Mike?" He nodded and said "Yesh, you see the little people tried to take Jordan when he was a wee one, but my wife stopped them at the ruins. That's when I started drinking, cause she said it'd keep them away until Jordan was no longer under my protection."
I stared at him, completely amazed by what I was hearing because this was the first time Mike had admitted to anyone why he was a drunkard. He stared me in the eyes his own filling with clarity and said softly "When you go there, they'll be waiting. They won't be able to touch Jordan, but they'll try. If they can take the one they seek, they'll take the next best thing, to draw him to their land on his own. I don't know if it's you or Jordan they seek, but tonight be careful for the boundary is weak."
I nodded holding that thought close; you see unlike most scholars of the occult, I believed all the myths had some facts. I even had a silver chain I kept on my person at all times since every creature of the occult seemed repelled by it. I walked over to Jordan and noticed the party was ending, so we walked over to his beat up old truck and started for the dig sight. It took all of ten minutes to drive there since I was going a wee bit over the speed limit, and by a wee bit I mean about twenty miles. I pulled into a parking spot by all the abandoned cars and the two of us got out then lugged what was left of Jordan's alcohol into the ruins.
We sat down in the center of the ruin and I lit some candles then the two of us just started talking about random ass shit. Eventually the conversation turned to what we should do and I said I was going to explore. He grinned and said have fun, he was going to have a drink. I walked off leaving him to enjoy his alcohol, that was the last time I saw Jordan as a normal guy, and I've regretted walking away ever since. This is where our story truly begins. Because you see, while I was wandering the halls, Jordan was taken by those who'd ruled the world before the arrival of man.
