Morphia Episode 1: Welcome to Morphia
#1 of Adventures in Morphia
A Pokemorph variation of Mystery Dungeon written in a fashion that somewhat references a television series. Follow Chiba as he seeks to become a strong and worthy member of a guild, earning money and fame.
The region of Morphia is a land in which no humans have ever stepped foot on, at least not technically. It has, for lack of a better term, become the home nation of the Pokemorphs, a race of beings who possess both the traits of a human and a pokemon. Nobody quite remembers how they first came about, as there have been a number of conflicting stories.
Some say they are the hybrid offspring of humans actually breeding with Pokemon. Others say they are a genetic experiment designed to bestow power upon greedy human organizations, or to make pokemon better able to interact with humans. Others claim they are a freak mutation who simply began to appear in otherwise normal families over the generations.
Whatever the case may be, Pokemorphs are still not completely accepted in human society, and they are too alien to fully blend in with Pokemon. So they founded a land of their own, the region known as Morphia. Today, Morphia has the largest concentration of Pokemorphs, although they can be found living in other regions in much smaller numbers.
They have created their own cities, businesses, and trades, using their abilities and resources to import and export goods between human regions. But what is perhaps the biggest attraction is the presence of Guilds within Morphia.
Guilds are an organization of Pokemorphs who have banded together to provide services to the common citizens. Most of this work is mercenary services and can include such things like security escorts, bounty hunting, item retrieval and delivery, and rescue missions. However, there are also more special guilds who provide services that others either can not, or will not for reasons of their own.
All of this, I knew going in, it was pretty common knowledge by this point. What I did not have knowledge to, however, was what my life would become like once I arrived! My name is Chiba Junichiro, and I am a Pokemorph.
Episode 1: Welcome to Morphia
The ship rocked back and forth on the water as the island nation began to emerge in the distance. I was so nervous during the trip, and when I saw the land I would be establishing a new life on, it was pretty exciting.
I had been born as Pokemorph to two human parents. My father was quite accepting of it, where as my mother was very spiteful. Part of the reason I left was to get away from her, the other part was to get trainers to stop tossing poke balls at me! You see, I was quite a rare species, one that held a lot of possibilities and trainers loved that. I was an Eevee, nothing too special as I was only a normal type. But I had the ability to become any 1 of 7 different evolutionary forms, each dedicated to a different element. Many trainers liked to force Eevees into breeding programs, where they could turn us into the element of their choice and have a pretty balanced team.
As fun as the idea of being made into a breeding stud was, I didn't like the idea of being chained up in some dungeon and forced to mate for the rest of my life.
I was fairly young, only 15 years of age. But Pokemorphs were much more powerful than humans were, so we could take care of ourselves at an earlier age. In fact, some of our children were already more powerful than human adults, especially the fighting types.
As an Eevee, my body also had a youthful appearance. I wasn't it was mostly sleek, except for my tail and the mane of fur around my neck which was quite fluffy. I weighed about 136 lbs, but my dad liked to joke that all the fluff probably added to the weight. I stood 4'5 tall, with the standard brown fur and white mane and tail tip. My eyes were hazel colored, a mixture between blue and green. I was wearing a pair of white cargo shorts, some blue and white sneakers, and a blue travel vest with a white t-shirt. It was summer, after all, so I decided to dress in light colors.
"There it is, Morphia right ahead of us!" called out one of the crew members of the ship. The entire crew was comprised of morphs, humans weren't even allowed to step foot on the docks, so most of those who worked the transports were fellow morphs like me.
The ship was fairly large, it had once been a cruise ship of some kind, but now it was converted into a transport ship to help Pokemorphs escape from the other regions. I had been sailing on it for roughly 3 weeks now because it made stops at other regions to pick up passengers along the way.
Other morphs were out on deck, some were nervous like me, others were excited. There were even morphs who were with other family members who happened to be morphs themselves. I could hear some of the closer ones talking to each other about starting their new lives. I had plans of my own as well, and they involved the guilds!
It only made sense, when I thought about it. I was too young for any kind of real job, and nobody else in my family was a morph, so I was pretty much completely alone in coming here. If I wanted to survive, I'd need to join one of the guilds and earn some money doing mercenary work, at least until I had enough money to afford a place of my own.
It did not take long for the ship to pull up into port and drop its gangplank as eager morphs began to descend for the first time onto Morphian soil. I grabbed my bags which had been next to my feet and made my own way down, only to be immediately greeted with a touch of Morphian society.
The closest place to the docks was a place called Treasure City. It was reported to be the first city to be constructed on Morphia, and yet it was also classified as the second largest in the region. Most of the trades such as importing and exporting was handled by Treasure City, and it was also said to be the place where the majority of guilds were founded, making it an attractive place for those seeking to form their own groups, or apply for membership.
As I made contact with the ground, feeling my feet come into contact with non moving cobblestone, it took me a moment to adjust. Those 3 weeks on a rocking ship had disrupted my sense of balance, and having flat ground beneath me was a sensation I had almost forgotten.
"E-excuse me." I said, my voice a little shaky from a sudden bout of dizziness as I tried to speak one of the morphs who seemed to be working at the docks. It was a Squirtle dressed in a sailors uniform, complete with white pants, shoes, shirt, and hat.
"Can you tell me where to try out for guild membership?" I asked. The squirtle chuckled to himself before turning to face Treasure City and pointing towards it.
"You're looking for the Guild Applicants Sector." He replied, "Take that road into town until it turns right. You'll come across what looks like a huge market full of stalls and morphs." He instructed me. "Those stalls are recruitment drives for any guilds looking to take on new members." He added.
"Thank you." I said, before hefting my bags and hurrying off down the appointed road. I was so excited that I didn't notice he tried to call out a warning to me. If I had, maybe things might have turned out a little differently.
Sure enough, the road he mentioned did lead to a massive thoroughfare of what appeared to be market stalls, and it was more cram packed than a bazaar. The stalls had swarms of Pokemorphs crowding around them, so much that I could scarcely tell which guilds they represented. Were it not for each stall having the name of the guild emblazoned on it, I wouldn't even know who I was trying to deal with.
Thankfully, the stalls were pretty far apart from each other on either side of the walkway, so there was room to move through the crowds as I tried to look for a stall that didn't look like it was being attacked by an angry mob.
I finally managed to come across a stall that surprisingly, was very devoid of applicants, and had somebody sitting inside with a happy smile. I looked at them to see it was a Pikachu morph, a male by the looks of it. He saw me looking at him and waved a greeting. I was about to wave back when suddenly, a hand clasped me on the shoulder, startling me as I turned around.
"You looking to join a guild? I can tell by your bags you've just arrived here." said a voice as I turned around to see the one who had grabbed me was a Charmeleon morph who looked to be quite well built.
He was dressed in a pair of fiery orange shorts as his only means of clothing, showing off his firm muscles in his arms, legs, and abs. He was also quite a deal taller than me, being that he was a second form Pokemorph, standing around 5'8 tall.
"Why yes, I am." I replied, noticing the large claws he possessed as he wrapped an arm around my shoulders and pulled me closer, pointing down an alleyway to show another stall I had missed, it had a black tarp over it, not like the colorful ones out in the open.
"Well lucky for you, " he said, "the Shining Moltres guild is taking on new applicants at this very moment." he added. Before I knew what was happening, I was following him down the alleyway towards the stall. Someone else was behind the counter, but I couldn't see who it was because the alleyway was already shaded, and the tarp overhead was making it even darker.
"Pretty smart setting up down an alley like this." I said, "Everyone else out there is getting swarmed by applicants." I said, causing the Charmeleon to laugh, as well as the shadowy figure behind the counter.
"Yeah, that happens a lot around here. This way, we can pick out those who actually look like they'd fit with the guild, and ignore those who look like a waste of time." the Charmeleon said as we got closer to the stall. The flame on his tail was providing lightning to the alleyway, and soon, we were close enough that I could now see who was running the stall.
It was a Zubat morph, with a blind fold wrapped over his face to hide the fact he did not have any eyes. His arms and legs were spindly, attached to his lanky body, and his wings folded over his back like a cape. He was wearing a pair of shorts like the Charmeleon, but also had a matching vest to go with it.
"Welcome to the Shining Moltress!" The bat greeted me, "If you want to join up, we have some membership forms for you to fill out, along with an initiation trial." He informed me. "Nothing too dangerous, just a test of your abilities, and you're in." He added.
"Seriously, haven't you ever heard of a Wild Guild before?" said another voice from down the alleyway, causing both the Zubat and the Charmeleon to let out grunts of noticeable anger as they turned to face the new arrival.
"I suppose you wouldn't, considering you look fresh off the boat. I guess I'll have to explain it to you later." The voice said as I now recognized the figure. It was the Pikachu who had waved to me earlier.
I could now see the morph in a more clear setting. It was clearly male, but was wearing a rather awkward pink outfit. The uniform consisted of some tight shorts ending at mid thigh, and a cut off vest that ended with his chest, leaving his abs exposed. Some He also had elbow length, fingerless gloves, and what looked to be pink stockings with ninja sandles. He seemed to be around 5'0 tall, with a slim and yet toned body. I could see the signs of muscle definition on him, yet his frame was surprisingly compact, almost girly in a way.
"Stay out of this, we saw him first!" the Zubat protested as I looked back and forth between the others, trying to find out what was going on.
"Oh really?" The chu asked, jolts of lightning beginning to crackle around his body, "And where you planning to tell him you were wanted criminals before or after you had him take part in your activities?" He asked.
"I've had enough of you, cock sucker!" shouted the Charmeleon as he rushed in with his claws flashing. The Pikachu dodged under a swipe with such speed, the fire type might as well have been moving in slow motion. Then the chu retaliated by rising with an electrically charged upper cut.
"Thunder Punch!" He cried out, slamming the Charmeleon right in the stomach with a fist that crackled with the sound of electricity. The electrical discharge was transferred straight into the fiery reptile as his body collapsed to the ground, glowing with brightly as it was shocked by the high voltage. By the time the glowing stopped, the Charmeleon was passed out on the ground, faint traces of smoke wafting off him, but his tail was still burning, indicating he was alive.
"Screw this!" The Zubat shouted, unfolding his wings as he attempted to take flight. Before he even reached the top of the alleyway, however, the chu pointed two fingers at him.
"Thunder!" he exclaimed as a bolt of lightning shot from his finger tips, catching the Zubat square in the backside. The force of the impact not only sent massive jolts of electricity through his body, but slammed him into the alleyway's wall, causing him to bounce off the tarp of his own stall and land in a crumpled heap on the ground.
When it was done, the electricity surrounding the Pikachu faded as he approached me. I was clearly startled from seeing him just one shot two other morphs, but as he didn't seem to be in attack mode, I relaxed just a bit as he came to rest a hand on my shoulder, smiling in a friendly manner.
"My name is Alex Light." He introduced himself, "Welcome to Morphia... Now lets get you oriented with the place!"
