The rhythmical sound of booted footfalls was only second worst to the glare of torches. Shruikan blinked several times to adjust to them, yet some of the discomfort persisted. He brought his tail about his snout to hide from the bothersome disturbance. That only solved one problem
The thumps continued. Thud, thud, thud. They grew in intensity, and the murmurs acquired enough substance for Shruikan to discern their meaning.
"Can't see past my arm, blast it," a rough voice said, hardened by age, undoubtedly.
"Can't see past your cock, more likely. Squad leader Zigrar caught you making your water, and his eyesight matches his deaf ears," somebody else said. That voice was smooth yet strong and lacked the tremors that rocked the first man's words.
"Don't care. Let's be done with this thing first." The first one again.
"Then walk instead of shuffling."
"Walk into the beast's maw you mean."
Shruikan cracked an eye open. The man made a fair point. Any being as incompetent as this one deserved a place in Shruikan's belly. That, assuming he had the power to rise. He didn't, and closed his eyes again.
"If you are that stupid."
"Not stupid, only blind. And the hide of this beast is darker than this darkness."
"Have you seen it?" The second man inquired.
"Nobody who lives has. Except for the king."
The second man chuckled. "Aye. Everybody says that in camp, and everybody believes it."
"You..."the first paused. "You don't?"
"I believe I'll throw you at him, then our companion, and run." He laughed. The other sniffled, and said nothing.
Shruikan removed the obtrusive tail from his eyes to catch a better glimpse of the cowardly fools.
There they were. Several of his wingspans across the room, near the entrance to his sanctuary. Both wore the same set of plate, chain mail, vestments and swords. They walked side by side, torch arm forward, the other stiff to the side, fingers clenched around their weapons. The one to the left lagged behind every couple of footsteps. His companion, a beast with more hair on his face than any human had the right to, had to grab his arm and hurl him forward ever so often.
As he did, Shruikan caught a glimpse of a shoulder. Not big, like the soldiers', but petite, with an equally frail arm attached to it. It disappeared behind the men as the one behind caught up.
"Where is it? Should of seen it by now."
"Somewhere around," hairy beast said. His voice lowered to a husky growl, devoid of the slim confidence it held. "Stop when you catch sight, and don't draw your sword."
"What if it--"
Enough of these fools. "Name your purpose," Shruikan said.
They both froze. Metal hissed from scabbards, and a high pitched yelp burst from the men. No--from behind them.
Shruikan settled his head on his paws. His curiosity satisfied, he no longer had the energy and patience to deal with them. Rest. That's what he wanted. Rest, so that when the sun shone, he'd eat the same type of deer and sleep in the same cave. Then do that again, and again, for the rest of his infinite days.
"Leave. All of you."
The men were all too happy to oblige. They sheathed their swords faster than they drew them and whirled on their feet. One elbowed the girl in his rush, and the other rammed her staggering form shoulder-first. She fell with a muffled yelp as the guard wobbled, looked back at her, then fled.
"Leave as well," he told the girl.
She stood there, sprawled on the stone besides a torch the cowardly guard dropped in his great haste. She snaked one hand towards it, clutched it like it was life itself, then dug her pointy chin in her hilly chest.
"Flee, woman. Run like your companions did."
Only the flickering flame of the torch moved. Shruikan gathered his limbs underneath him. His lips twitched in irritation at the extra effort. A snarl wouldn't scare her. She had a human's weak, round eyes that could not discern anything past her arm. A roar meant terrified servants who would refuse to visit and bring food. They would be executed, and Shruikan still wouldn't get food.
He had to get up. No matter how painfully taxing, he had to do it.
He rolled on his belly, scales swishing against the damp stone. He tucked his limp, sprawled wings and shook off the dew that coated them. Lastly, he...stopped.
The woman placed the torch on the floor. She then collected herself, rose, dusted her linen shirt and deerskin tunic, removed her braided hair from her shoulders, and looked forward. Towards him.
"I'll get whipped for it. Flayed, perhaps." Her shaking voice was surprisingly coherent.
"I want you to leave."
"I don't." Her eyes bore into his. Cerulean spheres, like the sky at noon, surrounded by a white sea. Her skin, although smooth, was patterned with dots of a strange, blood-like color. They were only prominent on her small brow and sallow, sunken cheeks. "I come with task."
"Speak of it."
Her gaze drooped, and she continued to swat at nonexistent dirt on her clothes. "To pleasure you, m'lord."
Shruikan snorted, and his tail tip flicked with interest at the strange word choice. "Approach," he demanded. "Come, and tell me if what you see resembles one of your barrel-bellied lords."
She flinched at first, but reached for the torch and shuffled forward with a speed similar to that of the guards. Shruikan flexed his claws. The stone's groan froze the girl in her tracks.
"Walk, woman. You slither like snails."
She nodded to the side, the opposite where Shruikan stood, and started heading that way. At a faster shuffle than her previous one.
"Head there and you'll walk into a wall." An amusing sight, if only Shruikan had the patience for it now. He'd trick her to do just that on her way out. Right now, his only curiosity was to gauge her answer. "Make half a circle, then stop and start walking straight."
She did just that. Very obedient, this one. Most of the women were crippled with fear and awe. Few had the audacity to address him, fewer invoked punishments to enforce the necessity of their presence, and only three listened to what he had to say. Shruikan remembered them well, mostly by their hair. Brown, grain color, dark. None the color of fire and brown dots on their faces.
"Do you know what you are about to do?" He asked. Not that he'd let her, but to guide this blind fool towards him.
"Yes," she said.
"How to do it?"
"Yes." She said with half a mouth. A lie.
"Why you do it?"
"Yes." Same answer, same pursed lips at the end.
Shruikan rose to his feet. Strength flared within his limbs, raw and wild. For the first time in more years than he cared to remember, Shruikan had the power. He could sink his teeth into this delicious foreign morsel that smelled of pine and salted meat. Chase her, then tackle her pitiful form. Or make her water herself in fear with a deafening roar.
Instead, Shruikan lifted one of his paws. Dried blood and bits of meat still clung to his claws from his last meal, and the meals before it. He didn't have the strength to clean them. He never did. Except now.
"What's that sound?" The woman froze again.
Shruikan ran his tongue across his foot, between each claw and digit.
"Are you eating someone? A guard or...someone. Clad in armor. Or trying to remove the armor from their bodies so that you can eat them." Her voice picked up, and so did her footsteps. "But they will still have clothes, which are a bother. And that raspy sound is--"
"I do," Shruikan licked his paw one more time before placing it down, "when there is such an abundance of them. I'll eat you as well, if hunger forces me to do so."
Her eyebrows scrunched. "Will it?"
"As long as you take until first light to reach me. You will be my first meal, even."
"Apologies," she said with a shake of her head.
"Apologies?!" Shruikan strode towards her. The woman went to her knees with a yip, dropped the torch, and cupped her hands in her lap, head bowed. "Am I two legs to demand apologies from? Do furs and colored cloth conceal my hide, do chains dangle from my neck, are my horns burdened with metal?"
"No," she said, looking up. Shruikan stepped in front of her pitiful form, his claws a limb span from...Shruikan knew that position. Servants adopted it often to explain their errors to their masters. This woman merely followed them, only she...
"Am I a lord, woman?" Shruikan's belly churned with anticipation. Fire welled within his throat, demanding to be unleashed. His muscles tensed with the urge to do something, anything.
"No."
Shruikan waited.
"You are dirty, dragon. And you stink of rot and mud and..." she trailed off as her hand went to her mouth. She heaved.
"Speak."
"And shit," she blurted out.
"I don't smell it." He did; a heavy odor that wrapped itself around him like strangle thorns. He had meant to shed it in a lake days ago, fortnights ago, only...he never had the strength to leave his cave. And to what purpose? This cave would still have reeked when he returned.
"Or you grew familiar to it." Her eyebrows scrunched again. "Why do you live like this, dragon?"
Shruikan drew his head back, fanned his massive wings and flashed his teeth at the woman. She flinched, but didn't move.
"You came here with a purpose. Do it, then see yourself gone."
She rose on her feet with more grace than her frail, trembling form should allow. Her eyes met his for a split second before she averted her gaze. The swell in her neck moved up, then down.
She was afraid, after all. Shruikan stood just a bit straighter, now that poise mattered. He folded his wings to his sides, brought his hind legs in line with his front ones, and flicked his tail left and right. Although the woman feigned indifference at the change in his posture, her jittery eyes betrayed her. They rocked back and forth, never settling. Her shoulders too slumped as she brought her arms forward. Shruikan tilted his head. Not surprisingly, her hands shielded her face. As if that made a difference.
"You did not seem afraid."
"Am not," she said with a curt glance. "It's common for the prey to flinch before a predator. Is in our blood."
"You are wiser than many of those lords you mentioned. Yet still a servant." His snout inched closer to her. "Disposable."
She denied it, yet her scent did not lie. It filled Shruikan's flared nostrils. Sour, with the salty tang of perspiration. "That's why they send cowards here. So they can either run or..."
"Pester you. Like me. You don't agree with my presence."
"That can be solved by way of teeth or fire." He lowered his snout; lowered it until she stood right between his nostrils. "Which one befits you, servant?"
She lifted her gaze from the ground. One hand approached him...
Shruikan drew his head back with a hiss at the touch of her wet, clammy hand against his scales. He licked at the area to remove the bothersome itch, yet somehow it persisted.
"None. Every woman who came here returned." Her lips stretched into a forced smile.
"You are more bothersome than the rest."
"Yet still a handful of bones that take more strength to chew on than they give."
She had a way with words, and became increasingly aware of how lax Shruikan grew. Lax enough to keep her around more than necessary. Shruikan took a step backwards. The more distance stood between them, the better.
"Leave. Tell whoever sent you that your presence bothered me to such extent that the following guards should be fat, devoid of clothes, and clean of their stench."
"Still a handful of bones that take--"
Shruikan's growl ended her words. "I eat what I please. Run, before I find the strength you mention so fondly."
She wrapped her arms around her chest, just under her firm, round breasts, and narrowed her eyes. "They will know of it. King Galbatorix--he insists that whatever distraction took hold of you, it must be purged. If I...whipped....flayed..."
Her words dissipated as Shruikan thought back on that moment, when he caught a female's fertile scent for the first time. A fragrance, sweet, intoxicating, and irrationally alluring. One whiff, and strength flared to a blaze below his midnight scales.
Forget your cave, forget your invisible tethers, forget yourself. Chase the female, tackle her, mate her, his instincts had urged. They still did. Although the blaze died, an ember of it remained; a constant and painful reminder of a life every dragon ought to have. A life forever denied to him.
A distraction indeed.
"Will you allow me to?"
Shruikan shook his head to clear it. He was back. Back into his cave, surrounded by constant gloom and dampness and shit.
He thrust his head upwards, where the bothersome glare of the torch did not reach his eyes. Whatever happened below, he did not want to see it anymore.
"Proceed."
His foot stiffened at her soft but foreign touch. She gasped at the scrap of claws against stone, but continued to hover along one of his digits. Another bothersome touch. This time on the softer scales of his leg. He lifted it.
"There is only one area you need to touch."
"One I can't reach."
Shruikan lowered himself onto his belly, then sprawled on his side for her, one wing tucked, the other stretched across the damp, cold floor. These ants on two legs could not reach him otherwise.
"I heard much about dragons," she said. The itch produced by her hands returned, this time at the base of his neck. "How big they grow. But words are words. One has to see to believe."
Shruikan found no strength to reply, to keep his eyes open, or breathe more than long, shallow breaths. Were it not for her itchy touch, sleep would have claimed him.
"Such majesty. Your sinuous neck, the huge size of each of your paws, the curve of your claws. They are impressive. The smell--" she coughed one time, breathed in, then coughed again. "Less so. And there is grime. A whole layer of it coating much too beautiful scales." Her leathers rustled as she wiped her hands on them to emphasize her words. "I can wipe it. Make you majestic again." Her voice acquired a higher, more excited pitch.
Shruikan released his drawn-out breath in a long sigh. "I will do it myself. You do your part," he somehow found the strength to say.
Shallow footsteps resumed their thumping on bare stone. When they came to a stop, a soft poke in Shruikan's lower belly followed. He twitched his tail tip, drew in a breath, but released it when he found the caress agreeable. Her hands glided along the softer, more sensitive scales of his underbelly, her fingers nipping ever so often. The closer she got to his flank, the broader Shruikan's tail rocked.
He released a weak yelp when she found it. That ridge between his flanks, patched with increasingly softer, smaller and sensitive scales. A few quick rubs and gentle prodding, and blood already rushed through Shruikan in a riptide of awareness. His breath grew steadier, more focused, and his tail coiled around one of his hind paws, only to let go when the touch faded. Jolts rushed along his wings up to his wingtips, urging him to flex them open, then tuck again.
The woman yapped and drew back, judging from the sound of her footsteps. Shruikan craned his neck and cracked an eye open.
"It just burst. Through the scales, past them, growing..." she swatted aside her tail shaped hair, wiped her brow with her wrist, then turned to Shruikan. "It's so big, so fast."
Shruikan hummed a response. His member throbbed in unison with his heart beats, pulsing, demanding to be sunk into fleshy depths. None were here to delight him. Only two hands, too small to withstand his thrusts. They wrapped around his leathery sheath, encompassing not even a third of it. Yet Shruikan still froze, his veins bulging along his dewy member as the woman caressed its length. Shruikan tensed. The claws of his right fore and hind paw scratched at the ground for support as his hindquarters curled towards a tentative thrust. The woman jumped back at the motion, yelping. Without proper binding, Shruikan's member bobbed. Each slap against the hard scales of his belly brought painful, irritating jolts through his fully grown, sensitive member. He snarled.
The woman chanced him a look, then rushed to cradle his member near the blunt, thinner tip. The warmth of her touch sent Shruikan back on the edge. He shoved through her palms hard, relishing the hard, slick clutch that ran along his shaft. He drew back for a second one, when a hand cupped around his tip. Clutching it, squeezing it, fondling with it. A shiver of elation surged through Shruikan. His limbs stiffened, and he pierced through the cage made of her hands, so hard the motion made the woman stagger on her feet, then fall.
Shruikan let out a muffled yelp. The rush faded. All that remained was that teasing, infuriating bobbing.
"I don't--I can't grab hold of it, dragon," the woman whined. She dropped to her knees, mucky hands clasped on her lap, head bowed in defeat. "I tried, I--" her eyes met his. They sparkled in the dim torchlight. "I didn't please you."
"No human ever did."
Shruikan switched his eyes from her to his throbbing member. He feigned a thrust, grabbed the member at the middle between his forepaws, and shuddered in pain against the rough, tight grasp. The woman too shrieked, but Shruikan diverted from her to his own pressing needs. With each throb, they increased.
He touched the tip with the sensitive area between his nostrils, then nudged it. Pleasure spiked through his body in short bursts, each more intense than the other. An overwhelming desire to thrust fettered his muscles. Shruikan relaxed his hind paws to let go of the ground and the support it offered. No purchase meant no thrusts.
He had to rely on his long, sinuous neck instead. He brought his snout down to his front paws, then ran it along his member up to the tip. His lips trembled with the urge to snarl at the motion. So intense the pleasure was, his tail wrapped around his shivering flanks when he reached the tip. He repeated it, then again, and again, until every vein in his member swell to the point of bursting.
Shruikan's breath too came in ragged bursts. He heaved with the pent-up toll of pleasure, yet did not succumb to it. Once he reached the tip, he caressed it in a circular motion with his softer snout scales. His lips parted in half a snarl, and a mellow growl vibrated in his throat. His paws twitched, flexed, trying to grip at nothingness. And his member throbbed, harder and harder with each passing moment.
Shruikan began nudging the tip. His muscles were so tight, he lacked any control for any other motion. So he nudged the tip of his member, until the raging tempest within became too much to bear. He released his member from the confines of his front paws, dug them into the ground, then thrust forward for one last time.
The first spurt burst with the might of a crashing wave. It splattered along the ground with a squelch. The second came, and a third. Shruikan growled a high pitch growl through his bared teeth as bliss washed through his body. It wrecked his rocking member, forced his wings spread open, brought his tail up, then slammed it against the floor. Then, as sudden as it began, it faded with one last splash.
Shruikan's nostrils flared at the pungent, savory smell of his musk. It covered his forelimbs in a watery swath, plastered along his belly in a surplus of grime, trickled along his retracting, flaccid member. Once it vanished, Shruikan rose. His muscles trembled under the weight, yet felt oddly eager for something. Something that he had not done in a while.
First, he turned towards the wild eyed woman. "You will attend to me from now on. Have the guards bring servants to this cave to clean it."
"It's--it's l-late in the night," she stuttered.
"What does a dragon do to disobeying, pitiful two legs?"
She started to reply, but Shruikan had no ears for it. His wings yearned for wind under them. Ached for it. So did his limbs.
Shruikan strode to the exit of his cave, unfurled his wings, and hurled himself to the night with a muffled roar. Although clouds blotted the moon, Shruikan's eyes still pierced the darkness. Why, then, had he waited for so long to see?
