#16 of Orion and the Fox

Here's the much anticipated Chapter 16, Enjoy.

The twins quickly filled their leader in on what transpired before they arrived. She calmed down some when they told her about the spirit sentry they found. "At least he's got something to fall back on should things take a turn for the worse. Though I can't help but, feel that what he's experienced already is just the beginning." Kyuri replied. My mother happened to be walking by at the same time and shared her opinion.

"That may be true but, make no mistake my son isn't the type to back down quietly. If Ashandria believed that he'd utilize her teachings wisely than I have faith in him. Besides knowing that you're here waiting for him that's all he needs to make it home." Mom smiled. With that my mother walked back inside leaving all three vixens to their thoughts. Jaxal had been standing nearby and overheard everything my mom revealed.

He couldn't help but, smile as he stood up and went for a nice long walk. From the corner of her eye Renka noticed Jaxal heading towards the town center. "Jaxal hold up mind if I accompany you into town or do you want be alone?" She asked. Giving her a soft smile he told Renka to stay behind and to watch over everyone. Considering he wasn't going to be gone for long and with that he resumed walking.

As he disappeared Renka gave a whistle getting Nubai and Kyuri's attention. With a twitch of her head the three vixens went back inside the house to wait. Kyuri went back inside the house while Nubai and the twins went off somewhere. Renka tracked Nubai's energy until it reached a secluded area a mile away. She did it on the off chance something happened and needed to retrieve the vixen.

Meanwhile back at my campsite near the foot of the Hydra Mountain range. I was still sleeping peacefully somewhat unaware of things going on around me. Luckily the local wildlife didn't seem to notice my resting place when they past. Unfortunately for me a small group of figures ended up finding my resting place. The apparent leader of the group stepped closer to my sleeping bag and took a sniff.

While my private regions where being inspected a soft murr entered my ears. Followed by a very strange series of barks then I was cut down from the tree. They were extremely careful bringing me down and silently fetched all my things. Next the group carried me all the way back to their camp where I was locked up. At least that's what it appeared to be if anyone witnessed what transpired here tonight.

By the time I woke up and checked my surroundings I didn't like the situation. Next I checked my arms, legs and neck for anything keeping me from escaping. To my surprise nothing of course they could have another method of restraint. Of course I scanned the area for signs of a magical barrier and luckily nothing. When I stood up the sound of footsteps drew closer and found a safe place to hide.

Granted I'm not proud of this but, at least I'd learn about my possible enemy. The flap of the hut whipped open then a tall cloaked figure entered the space. Slipping up silently behind them and with one swift blow I knocked them out. After slinging my pack back upon my shoulders then I moved towards the door. Silently apologizing to the person lying out cold on the ground before exiting the house.

As I looked around there wasn't much activity going on outside luckily enough. Keeping my fingers that I could slip past everyone and get back to my mission. Flying down the dirt road like a blur only to have someone stopped me cold. Suddenly my progress was cut short by what felt like a steel beam to my stomach. I was sent reeling back several feet before recovering then I looked at my enemy.

When I looked upon her the ability to form words in my mouth just vanished. All that exited my mouth was this sharp little squeak as I looked at this kitsune. Now Jaxal is about nine inches taller than me and let's just say I felt really short. Upon closer inspection of her person I learned that she wasn't holding a weapon. This kitsune had used her own fist to stop me dead in my tracks was pretty impressive.

Taking a moment to size up this obstacle, the direct approach would be dumb. Giving her size, muscle mass and strength left only a few options available to me. Until I was hit by a sudden spark of inspiration I utilized the after image technique. Allowing me to slip around the buff six tailed vixen then raced towards the exit. Keeping my fingers crossed that my false image wouldn't fade until I was far away.

Little did I know that she was already ahead of me when I reached the forest. Jumping into the nearest tree I jumped from branch to branch until I got caught. Something snatched my ankle while I was in midair then threw me to the ground. At the last second I managed to flip over then landed hard on my hands and knees. This annoyed growl entered the air while I slowly rose to my feet then looked around.

Of course the same vixen from before was there and she didn't look happy. Suddenly this flash of green light flooded the area blinding me for a few moments. When the light and the floaters in my eyes faded the vixen decided to speak. "You know it's hard to assist you on your quest if you keep trying to run away. Now would you please come back to the village where we can talk like adults." She stated.

Feeling a bit stupid now I agreed to return with her to the village to talk terms. Once back inside her hut we sat across from her fire pit then she got a fire going. As the hut filled with light I got a much better look of my host and she looked familiar. Wagging gingerly behind her were three long tails that's when I noticed something. Falling from the tips of all three tails was what appeared to be either sand or dirt.

"You must be the goddess of the Earth please forgive my actions from before." I said. She told me not to worry about it, what I did was only natural due to the situation. After all she kidnapped me from my resting place to bring me to this location. Where she was asked by her sisters to give me a clue to assist me on my journey. Now I'm looking at this goddess like is she actually serious or was this a waste of time.

When her hand began radiating with an ancient energy I learned other wise. She dipped her hand into the ground twirled it around some then lifted her arm. Once free from the earth there was something small and shiny held under her fingers. Giving her wrist a flick she tossed the object and after I caught it she spoke. "That's a piece of the item my sister Ice mentioned when she visited you a few days ago." She said.

"This will resonate or glow when it's close to the object I'm searching for?" I asked. Before I got an answer from her, she smiled then became this life sized dirt statue. Next this strange yet, soft breeze blew through the hut whisking the dirt away. If this was my first time experiencing something like this I would've freaked out. Luckily growing up in this place my mind is flexible when dealing with the unknown.

Sadly with sunrise a few hours away I decided to get a couple hours of sleep. I kept my fingers crossed that nobody would find me in here and try anything. Luckily nothing happened but, when I awoke let's just say I finally wigged out. Apparently what I had experienced was one hell of a vivid dream except for one thing. Before doing anything I climbed out of the tree then inspected myself and my backpack.

By the time I searched the last pouch on my pack I found the item I received. Upon closer inspection the item the earth goddess it was the arrow to a compass. Curious I decided to see if it would work without its case so I moved it around. When it tugged on my hand slightly and glowed telling me two important things. One it worked without the case and two I knew the direction I had to travel along.

Taking a few moments to put my sleeping bag away then to secure my pack. Next I bolted up the path that the arrow indicated at fifty percent my max speed. The entire time I ran along this road I kept my sense tuned for any other surprises. After a while I did pick up on the primal kitsune broods like the twins mentioned. Fortunately I was moving fast enough that they didn't notice my trespassing at all.

Sadly I picked up on the sounds someone in trouble and went to assist them. Once I arrived on scene I stuck to the shadows and kept my energy level hidden. Moving to a spot I could watch what was going on just a couple yards away. Now I didn't know the full situation but, I couldn't stand by and bear witness it. Waiting for the right moment to make my move and when their backs were turned I struck.

Unleashing the full extend of my power and speed I became this soft blur. Before they could react I kicked one in the neck and the other across the ribs. My attacks sent both kitsune high into the air then off in the distance crashing hard. A few seconds later two clouds of dirt shot up first, then two separate thuds. Keeping my senses sharp wondering if those two would recover and return for round two.

When I knew for certain they weren't coming back I turned around to face her. Though I was quick to turn away due to the fact the vixen wasn't wearing clothes. Slipping off my outer shirt then reaching back with my right hand then waited. Seeing that I wasn't going to harm her, she reached up and took the shirt from me. What I didn't expect was for her to hook her arms around me without warning.

She spoke in a language that I've never come across but, she sounded grateful. Telling me she must belong to a primal kitsune brood or perhaps she's a rogue. Sadly with a language barrier getting answers from her would prove rather tricky. "Umm, miss mind letting go I'd like to get out of here if those clowns do come back. Granted I took care of them but, that doesn't mean they were the only ones present." I said.

As I looked over my shoulder at her, the look she gave me told me plenty. Unclasping her arms from around my stomach I scanned the area before moving. Next I scooped her up into my arms surprising her then I ran with all my strength. Clutching onto me for dear life I carried the vixen far away from ground zero. Not before retrieving my pack from the tree I left it in before saving her from those goons.

While still on the move I kept an eye out for any signs of trouble or company. I kept this pace up for several hours until I knew for certain we were truly safe. Carefully slowing my pace down to a safe walk and finally to a complete stop. I placed my guest down first then took a good hard survey of our surroundings. Once I was satisfied I unslung my backpack from my shoulder and fetched my cantina.

Unscrewing the cap next then I offered it to her sadly she flinched away. To prove it wasn't dangerous I pour some water into my hand and showed her. She gave it a sniff then a soft lick then offered it again, she took it from my hand. While she drank her fill I gathered plenty of firewood then got a nice fire going. Pulling out some provisions I packed for this somewhat insane journey of mine.

When her nose smelled that I had food she crawled closer to my location. As her nose appeared I offered her a big piece of mildly seasoned beef jerky. She opened her mouth and took it gently from my hand then ran away from me. It was clear to me she was thankful but, I still haven't earned her trust just yet. That was fine by me not that I could blame the vixen after what's she has been through.

For now I'll keep her with me until I can guarantee her a home and safety. Once I grabbed myself another piece of jerky I turned around and faced her. As she stared back at me that's when it hit me the sentry the twins modified for me. By using that it would insure she would be brought some where safe from harm. The only thing I didn't know about was how long it would last before fizzling out.

Now there was a way I could ask them if I used the binding mark of mine. Sadly the further we are from one another the more energy is needed to make contact. This would leave me weakened as I tried to get in touch with Kyuri at Arreincia's. I didn't have much of a choice so I called forth a decent amount of my energy. Next I focused it into the binding mark on my right hand making it glow vibrantly.

The mark grew brighter then returned to normal as my message was sent. Unsure of how long it would take for her to get it then to ask the twins about it. I had to be patient until Kyuri replies so I struck up a conversation with my guest. When I looked at her she had fallen asleep by the fire leaving me to my thoughts. Laughing softly as not to wake her I made myself a bit more comfy but, stayed alert.

A couple hours went by when the mark on my hand began glowing brightly. Closing my eyes this would allow the information Kyuri sent me to be absorbed. When I reopened them I learned the sentry could bring her there and back. Kyuri wasn't thrilled I picked up a stray but, was grateful I was nearby to help. She also told me that my guest should understand hand signals but, I'll find out tomorrow.

Deciding to meditate allowing myself to recharge and remain alert for danger. Fortunately the night hours went by without a single problem to speak of. Well except until a certain someone was sniffing way too close to me for comfort. Sure enough when I turned to look she was less than two inches from my face. Of course the only natural reaction for such a situation was to jump away and geek out.

Fortunately I was safe from any embarrassment from my friends and family. Now she's looking at me with her head tilted to the side and one ear folded back. As I regained my composure she sat there with her tail wagging eagerly behind her. Chuckling to myself I tried some of the hand signals Kyuri shared with me. It proved to be a lot harder than I first thought but, my guest was quick help me with them.

We must have signed for a while until her stomach decided to join the conversation. Since the early morning sun was barely peeking over the trees in the distance. I grabbed my pack then fished out enough provisions for a good size breakfast. While it cooked she watched with amazement as I cooked something for us. Of course she couldn't help but, move closer to get a better idea of what I'm doing.

I signed that if she got any closer she might run the risk of getting burned. With a nod okay she moved back and sat patiently for me to finish cooking it. Luckily for her I was nearly done when she investigated the food inside the pot. The meal I made you could eat without needing to use utensils to pick up the food. Grabbing a ladle and bowl, next I filled the bowl then gently handed it to my guest.

She took it out of my hand, gave it a sniff before taking a small lap of food. Her muzzle wrinkled up then opened as she reached up and fanned her sore tongue. As I poured myself a bowl she recovered and blew on her food to cool it off. Following suit I blew on my food until the steam was faint then took a drink. Granted it wasn't big on taste but, it was packed with plenty of healthy nutrients.

My adoptive mother was great at many things but, cooking wasn't one of them. Even though she tried her best to make sure every meal was healthy and edible. It wasn't until I was older and able to help her in the kitchen that her cooking improved. Luckily this was probably her first cooked meal so she wouldn't care for taste. Sure enough my hunch was right when she licked her bowl clean and asked for more.

Checking the pot first to make sure there was enough for another helping. There wasn't much left so I extended my hand to her asking for her empty bowl. She placed her bowl in my hand where I gave her the rest then handed it back. While she ate I cleaned the stuff I used to cook our meal in then put them away. Once everything was stored back inside my pack I stood up and stretched my muscles.

By the time I finished my warm up, my guest finished eating and got to her feet. Handing me back the bowl I gave her then she sat back down by the campfire pit. Taking a moment to clean and put the bowl away before checking the time. Doing the math it was just about seven in the morning and the weather looked promising. With that out of the way I grabbed the bucket of dirt I gathered to snuff out the fire.

Next I buried the evidence of our camp site then made things look natural. Well I did try my best to anyway before slinging up my pack and moving out. We walked for a couple hours before stopping then I pulled out the sentry talisman. According to the twins I need an element as a catalyst then wrap the charm around it. The amount of energy I shared with would determine the sentry's abilities and strength.

As I search for a sturdy element that wouldn't come back to haunt me later on. Sadly there wasn't much lying around on the ground until I found a black stone. When I reached for it the young vixen's hand snatched my wrist then signed no. According to her black stones are normally telltale signs that predators might be nearby. Since this was probably her native turf I listened to her advice and left the stone be.

It was at that point I remembered the steel cooking pins I brought along. I quickly retrieved them from out of my pack along with the talisman a moment later. Following the procedure the twins passed along to me through my binding mark. Wrapping the talisman around four of the ten steel pins then began the chant. Next I offered a good portion of my energy then the symbols on the talisman lit up.

This small ball of light appeared then floated into the air where it began to morph. First to form was the torso, followed by the legs, arms, head and finally the tails. It was roughly my height, metallic gray fur, no head fur and glowing blue eyes. "Sentry are you ready to receive your orders?" I asked as it stood before me. With a dip of its head I began the rundown of the mission I wanted performed.

I marked the route they could take to reach the Snowing Bark Cedar village. Next I told the young vixen what was going on and that she would be safer there. Of course she didn't want to leave but, with a little negotiating she agreed. Waving goodbye to them as they began their journey where the others were waiting. When I could no longer see them I quickly resumed my journey deeper into the mountains.

Sadly I didn't know how much further I'd have to go before I got the next clue. Using the compass arrow as my guide it kept me from straying in any direction. Though to be honest I'd like to have more to work with than this metal arrow. As the sun was directly above I had traversed several miles and stopped to rest. While I took a break along the dirt road something nearby noticed my presense.

Naturally I sensed them a couple seconds later but, I didn't bother to react. Unsure of who or what my hidden guest was I left the first move in their hands. Fortunately whoever they were decided to leave me alone and left the area. Once I knew for certain they were gone I reached into my pack to grab a snack. While I ate the last couple pieces of jerky I brought along, I received a message from Kyuri.

She wanted to know if the vixen I rescued was on route to Arreincia's village. Along with how my journey was progressing or have I run into more road blocks. I told her that she would be there tomorrow around noon if things went smoothly. Also I made sure to tell her that it was getting harder for me to send messages. That I needed to reserve my power to navigate the mountains when this road ended.

Next I gathered all the energy I could spare to send my response to Kyuri. Once it was sent I hoisted up my pack then continued along the long dirt road. Instead of traveling at a decent rate of speed I took my time to let myself recover slowly. Seeing as I've been using it rather carelessly and that could prove trouble some. Especially if something or someone decides to attack I won't be much of a challenge.

Luckily for the next six hours I was left alone, which I found rather strange. Not wanting to jinx myself I picked up the pace hoping to reach the mountain side. My fortune held out as I reached the base of mountain that evening and made camp. With a ton of unknown still ahead of me I decided to eat dinner and turn in early. After cleaning my dishes I put them away then rigged up my pack and sleeping bag.

An hour upon bunking down I fell asleep until sunrise the next morning. Now climbing wasn't hard it was getting back out that ended up being a pain. Considering I tumbled out and bounced off the hard ground with a deep grunt. "I'm soo thankful that nobody else is around cause I'd live to regret falling out of a tree." I said. Shaking it off I gather everything up, put it away then scouted a safe climbing route.

That only proved to be a waste of time so I took a more direct approach. Bending down while readying every muscle in my legs before taking off. As I launched high into the air I vaulted from one over hang to the next with ease. Naturally the higher I went the thinner the air became and the temperature dropped also. Even the weather grew increasingly windy the more I continued to ascend the mountain.

About thousand feet above from the ground I stopped to rest on a ledge. Taking that time to allow my body to adjust before looking around for any paths. Sure enough another fifty yards above I found a road flowed with the land. Once I could breathe easier I vaulted carefully up to the path I found minutes ago. For some reason or another it was way to quiet and that weighed heavily on my mind.

Keeping my senses on alert for any signs of trouble or unforeseen dangers. The path was wide along with solid but, it looked like it has some steady traffic. From out of nowhere this loud howl echoed causing me to stop for a moment. Dismissing it since the wind was relativity strong at this altitude and resumed my march. Little did I know at the time I was presently being watched by a small hunting party.

"High Alpha what are your orders regarding our trespasser?" A female asked. The tri tailed black wolf folded her arms across her bare chest and looked down. She watched me with intrigue as I continued walking deeper into the mountains. Once her mind was made up she turned to her anxious pack members and spoke. "We'll shadow him for now, I'm curious to know where he's going." She replied.

With that settled they vanished then followed me while trying to stay hidden. As the wind died down it got a little easier to see until lite snow flurries fell. Most of them looked like quarter sized cotton balls it was a nice scene to watch. Though like all good things this moment was cut short when I sensed something coming. Unsure if who or what was friend or foe I removed my pack and tossed it aside.

The second my senses pinged again I react by thrusting my elbow backwards. Sure enough my attack landed, knocking them to the ground with a thud. My attention was redirected by four separate entities that grabbed my arms and legs. Little did I know at the time I just made the highest of insults towards the leader. "YOU DARE STRIKE A HIGH ALPHA YOUR DEATH SHALL FOLLOW!" She roared.

To be continued.
