Chapter three of New Beginnings! Back to Eric! Hope you like it!
"NO, MARCUS, DON'T GO! IT'S STILL OUT THERE!"
"I HAVE TOO, LIZZY. STAY IN HERE AND DON'T COME OUTSIDE NO MATTER WHAT, OKAY?"
"BUT MARCUS-"
"STAY IN HERE AN-"
CRASH
"AHHHHHHHHHHH"
"MARCUS! NO, NO, NO, NO, AHHHHHHHH"
"Dude, that was seriously the worst movie ever."
"Hey, it wasn't that bad."
"Really, Lucas? That was horrible! Why would they even go to a forest, in Alaska, on Halloween!?!?! It doesn't make any sense! And to make it even worse, It was a fuckin' abandoned log cabin! It was a typical 'college students go to forest and get killed' horror film."
"In this movie they all died in the end. That hasn't happened in any horror movie like this that I've seen. It was unexpected. Unexpected is good right?"
"..."
"Okay, it was very sucky, alright?"
"There we go, thats better. If that was a good movie to you, you're the worst movie critic of all time."
"Well I don't wanna be super critical on everything like you usually are. I think one super critical person is enough."
"You can never be too critical."
"Really? Yes you can! You are!"
"Wow, you're a jerk."
At that the pair started to laugh on their way to Lucas' car.
"So, Lucas, I have a question, Okay?"
"That's a stupid question."
"Alright you smart ass, seriously through, I have a question."
"Just shoot away."
"So at my old school, the all human one, I ran track. On the team I was one of the best. I was wondering if you think I would have a chance if I try out. You've seen the team, know some of the players. Do you think I could make it?"
"I didn't know you ran track. Why didn't you tell me this before?"
"It hadn't come up. So, do you think I could make it?"
"The only way to find out is to try."
"Okay! Tryouts are starting tomorrow. Can you come? My mom is going to be gone right after school with my brother and I kinda need a ride."
"What your saying is, you only need me for my ride?"
"Basically, yeah."
"Great! I'll be there!"
"You are a life saver, bro, thank you sooo much. I don't know how to repay you."
"I'll let you know."
Lucas pulled into Eric's driveway and they both got out of the car.
"Thanks for going to the movie with me Eric! It was a lot of fun!"
"No problem, it was fun. Let's do it again sometime, yeah?"
"Yeah, let's." Lucas said back with a quick wink.
With that, Lucas got into his car, backed out of the driveway, and drove away with a final wave. Eric was once again dumbfounded by Lucas' wink. His chest had a strange sensation he had only felt once before, after the first wink from Lucas.
Eric realized he had been staring into empty space when his brother opened the front door and spoke, "Hey, Eric? What are you doing standing out here? Aren't you cold?"
"Wha- oh, yeah, um, cold." Eric said and walked into the house.
Eric had eaten dinner and gone to his room. During the entire time he had been home, he could not stop thinking about Lucas and the strange feeling he had gotten from him.
'What is this?' he thought to himself, 'why the fuck do I keep thinking about him and why does he keep winking at me?'
In the moment he asked himself that, he remembered what he saw on Lucas' wrist, a rainbow colored bracelet which Eric guessed meant Lucas was and is gay. 'He's fuckin' flirting with me! Doesn't he know I'm not like him, I'm not gay!"
Eric pondered through his mind on this topic for around an hour before he fell asleep.
The next day went by very slowly for Eric. He was thinking about what to do and if he should confront Lucas. In the classes they had together, Eric didn't say a word to him and Lucas didn't know why.
At the end of school, Eric went to the field house and changed into a running uniform. When he got out onto the track, he saw Lucas on the bleachers overlooking the track. Lucas gave a quick wave and Eric gave an very subtle head nod before noticing everyone else trying out.
He saw that wolves, deers, horses, and cheetahs here are the majority. He watched a quick race some people were having and had gotten nervous. Their movements were faster than his and he was intimidated by it.
The coach called him forward. Eric walked slowly up to him. He was a tall black panther wearing a dark blue tank top with the school logo, a silver knight, and a hat, same color and logo, red track shorts, and a metal whistle around his neck.
"Can you walk any slower? You're already looking bad! Speed it up!" the coach yelled causing Eric to jump and run over to him. "So you're Eric Tanner? I read your records, a 10.34 100m sprint, that's really good no matter what species you are. Let's see you do it. If you can, it'll show these wanna be's what a real track star runs like. Again, to stress it, if you can."
"You want me to run a 100m right now? The track is full of other guys. It's too crowded."
"I'll clear it up right now," Eric looked at the coach and realized what he was about to do. He was about to cut him off when, "EVERYBODY OFF THE TRACK! TANNER HERE IS GOING TO SHOW US A 100M. NOW ALL YOU PAY ATTENTION, WE'LL EITHER SEE WHAT TO DO OR WHAT NOT TO DO!"
Eric saw the entire track clear up and all eyes turn toward him. He took a gulp and went to position. "On my signal your going to start, okay?" Eric looked at the coach and nodded. " You know, why don't we make this interesting, GORDON!"
A cheetah came out of the crowd toward the coach, "Yes coach?"
"What's tour average 100m?"
"It's a 10.16 Coach," the cheetah replied with a smug grin, "need me to show him who's boss?"
"Exactly. Tanner, you are going to have a quick race here with Gordon. He is the top 100m on the team. If you impress him and me your in."
"You ready, Tanner? Don't be bummed if you don't win, no one ever beats me."
Eric looked at the cheetah with disbelief. 'Does he really think he is better than everyone else? What a prick,' Eric thought before blurting out, "until today that is."
"Oh, he's a cocky one! This'll be fun!"
"OKAY! ARE YOU TWO READY? 5, 4, 3, 2-"
BANG
The two took off sprinting forward. Eric didn't want this cheetah to beat him. He hated people who thought they were better than everyone else. He was determined to win.
They were neck and neck. Eric made a final push. Gordon saw it and made his. They passed the 100m mark and no one was sure who won.
"So who won?" Eric asked breathing hard, "it seemed like a tie to me."
A student who was at the finish shouted. "Hey I filmed it, let's watch!"
Everyone gathered around him and stared at the screen. The student played it, but it was still indecisive.
"Well, there is only one thing left to do, you, What's your name?" Coach said to the student with the video camera.
"Um, Cody, Coach."
"Get that video to the sports department, I need to see this for myself."
"Yes sir" the boy, Cody, said and took off toward the sports department room.
"Now I have to say, you did great Tanner, what do you say, Gordon, he in?"
"I think he'll do alright."
"Then, Tanner, your in. Good job. Can't wait to see you on the track later. EVERYONE GET BACK TO RUNNING, THE SHOW'S OVER! Tanner, Gordon, come with me."
The three then walked to the sports department where the video was being slowed. "Hey, Dave, let's see what ya got."
Everyone gathered around the screen of 'Dave' and watched intently as they passed the finish. "Slow it down a little more and play though one more time."
Dave did as told and showed the results. The race was clear. 'Aw, fuck.' Eric thought as soon as he saw the video. Eric's foot was a couple inches behind Gordon's.
"Guess I'm still unbeatable," the cheetah said with grin Eric wanted to beat off his face and left the room.
"Don't hold it against yourself kid, and don't let him get to ya. He is an egotistical piece of work, but also the top runner in the school."
Eric just looked at the coach, nodded and walked out of the room. Lucas was waiting outside. "That was, like, the coolest thing I have ever seen! So who won? Was it you? It was wasn't it?"
"No, it was that little shit Gordon. Bitch beat me by a couple inches."
"Oh. Well I still think you did better!" Lucas said with a giant smile across his face.
Eric looked at him and wanted to smile back, but remembered yesterday. "Stop fucking doing that!" Eric yelled at Lucas.
Lucas was startled by Eric's yelling. "Stop what?" He said in a tone Eric took as feigned innocence.
"Stop with all the winking and smiling at me! Fuck! I'm not like you! I'm not fucking gay!" Eric screamed at the husky. He just stared at Eric in shock and hurt.
"Don't play fucking coy with me, I know what I saw. You've been staring at me all the time and winked twice at me! I have eyes!"
Lucas was still shocked but was able to push out, "I'm sorry! Okay? I didn't see you doing anything about it before! You didn't say anything! You just stood there and took it! How was I supposed to know? If you just told me you weren't interested I would have stopped!"
Eric looked at Lucas, this time he was in shock. They stood staring at each other for around a minute before Eric turned around and grabbed his stuff. "Where do you think you're going? I'm still going to take you home. I told you I would, and I am a man of my word."
Eric turned back toward the white wolf, "Fine, it's better than the bus."
They got their school supplies and threw them into Lucas' car. They got in and started their silent drive. When they got to Eric's house, he got out of the car, got his stuff, and went inside without a word to Lucas.
After he closed the house door behind him Eric ran up into his room. He slammed the door shut and slumped against it. "FUCK!" He yelled into the emptiness of his room. He then put his head into his hands and started to softly cry. "Fuck." He whispered to himself, barely audible.
