A Dragon's Love: Shadow of Remorse
#17 of A Dragon's Love
This is something that has been in my head as one of those "this is going to happen!" scenes I keep in my little Valor's Faith notebook. Most of them are action scenes or glimpses into Valor's powerful emotional reactions to instances, but this one is one of the few tender moments Valor and Calista get to share as the war rages around them. This particular scene takes place fairly early on in the third book of Faith's Valor: Pawn of the Divine (working title, though I kind of like it). Now... if I can ever make myself sit down and hammer out Sins of the Flesh and get there...

The railing erupted and pitched him to the deck. Valor grunted at the impact and watched the wrought iron ball rebound off of the thick mast nearby. He staggered to his feet and turned to look through the smoke and splinters at the ship across a short distance.
"Hard to starboard!" the Abrinin captain shouted. "Turn into their bow and fire a volley through her length!"
Valor glanced at Captain Kheron and tightened his grip on his bladed quarterstaff. They'd collide and Goddess knew their luck wasn't the greatest. They'd snag and go down with the imperial brig, if fortune had its way. He turned and sprinted up onto the bridge where Kheron barked orders and rammed another ball into his pistol's muzzle.
"Fire on their powder magazine," he said. "If we can ignite it, they'll blow sky high!"
The dark skinned elf considered him for a moment and shook his head. "No, if she goes up, we're close enough it'll take half the Shadow of Remorse with it!"
Valor shook his head and brushed the metallic red hair that had escaped his ponytail out of his eyes. "Just do it! I have a bad feeling about turning in front of them!"
Kheron watched him in silence for a moment and glanced toward the rapidly approaching brig. He jerked the rod from his pistol's muzzle and drew the hammer back. "Hard to port, now! Fire as we're turning away, all batteries!"
As they began to pull parallel again, Valor rushed to the railing anxiously. Come on, move faster! The imperial portholes filled with dark canon muzzles and his heart skipped a beat. "BRACE!"
The deafening thunder of canon fire drowned out the howling wind and the rumble of the ships' orbs. As smoke filled the space between the two vessels, Valor lifted his arm to shield his face and the deck lurched beneath his feet. He was nearly pitched to the deck again but Kheron caught him and kept him steady. When he dropped his arm and the smoke began to clear, they had already begun turning away.
"There's the magazine," he shouted and pointed to the dented hull of the opposing brig. "FIRE!"
Agaiin the deafening thunder rolled and smoke billowed forth. Seventy-five round shots pierced the brig's hull and splintered the insides. There was a brief flash and Valor was thrown back onto the deck. His eyes saw naught but a blur of color and light and the ringing in his ears left him deaf.
He stared up at the sky above for a moment then rolled onto all fours. When he'd staggered to his feet again, a billowing cloud of dirty gray smoke to their stern was all that remained of their threat. And far beyond, the black and purple sails of the IMS Invincible. He stared at the approaching man-o'-war on the horizon and sighed.
"If that brig shattered too many of our orbs, they're going to catch us in no time."
Kheron brushed the debris from his stolen black coat and nodded his agreement. "We're still in the air for the moment. I'll have Gavina fly below and take a look and do whatever repairs she can once the sun's gone down." The captain turned and looked over the broken deck and battered crew. "All sail, full sail! Loose the royals and stunsals! I want every scrap of tack on the wind!"
When Kheron looked at him again, Valor saw worry in those brown eyes for the first time. It chilled his bones to see the fearless pirate's questioning gaze. All he could do was offer a small shake of his head. "After she's done fixing the orbs, have her pull as much air off Invincible's sails and into ours as she can."
He pinched the bridge of his nose and turned toward the stairs. "I'll be below. I've got a lot to consider."
If Kheron answered him, Valor didn't hear it. He descended onto the main deck and turned to walk through the door into the captain's cabin just beneath the bridge. Kheron had been kind enough to offer him the lavish accommodations therein, but it did little to comfort him these days.
He strode to the wall-length window at the stern of the vessel and stared out past the dispersing column of smoke at the unsinkable threat that hounded their every move and chased them to the ends of the earth. It was only a matter of time before the Invincible caught them and they were the ones crashing to the ground in a fiery inferno. Even if they lost their orbs over water, their hull would have so many holes punched through it that they'd sink like a rock anyway.
No matter where they ran, there was only so much sky and so much open water. The Imperial navy was vast and they'd burned nearly all of their safe ports of harbor. And on the ground, the Abominations they'd created would hunt them with a ravenous hunger. Maybe after so many attempts in history, humanity would finally triumph and eradicate all of them from the face of the world.
Two lithe hands rested on his shoulders and he gave a start. As he tried to turn and look, their grip tightened and held him firm.
"I taught you better than that," the assassin Calista said softly. "Be always aware of your surroundings."
He wanted to snap at her, to turn and yell at her for setting him up to fail then belittling him for it time and again. But she was right. If he could learn to hear her silent step and catch her while she snuck about, none would escape detection from him. But it would never happen. They'd all be dead before too long.
As if she knew what he was thinking, Calista gently squeezed his shoulders and indicated the pursuing ship with a nod of her head. "Worrying about it will not keep the Invincible from catching us. Stop trying. When she comes, we will be ready for her." She turned him to face her and stared into his very soul with her piercing yellow eyes. "We will make them come to us. When we are ready, we will turn and fight and see just how invincible she really is."
He nodded again and smiled. "You're right," he said. She was always right. He lifted a hand and gently brushed his fingertips over the soft black fur of her cheek. "I think it's time we start taking things away from Darius. I don't know how much more I can lose before I break."
"You won't lose anything else," she whispered and leaned down to gently brush her lips against his own in an awkward, but practiced kiss. "You'll make the emperor so worried about losing his own things that he won't care about taking things away from you anymore."
He smiled at those words and began to feel a little better. Suddenly, the ship behind them stopped seeming like such an imposing threat and began to look more like a token to take away from Darius.
Calista kissed him again and he melted against the touch. He felt her long fluffy tail wrap gently around his waist and spiral down one of his legs. He loved that appendage. So long, so soft, and so flexible. Sometimes he was sure it had a mind of its' own. As his Syssan lover tugged the red tunic up out of his belt, he dropped his quarterstaff to the rug covered floor and started to fumble with the buckles on her black leather armor.
When he refused to lift his arms for ease of his tunic's removal, Calista's nimble fingers dropped to his belt and pushed his red trousers down his legs toward his boots. She was so intent on disrobing him despite his refusal to cooperate that it became increasingly easy to pull the pieces of her leather armor away from her soft black fur. Easier than normal at least.
When he'd pulled the last bit of armor away from her body, she gave an annoyed growl and spun him about. She stepped on the pool of red fabric between his ankles and he gave a yelp as he lost balance. He threw his hands up to catch himself and she yanked sharply on his tunic.
The jerk made him spin again and he stepped out of his boots and puddled pants. Her tail quickly snagged around one of his ankles and he found himself spinning back the other direction. The cabin was a blur of motion as she turned him and spun him about. Finally he felt his legs collide with the side of the bed and he stopped spinning.
Calista was right there, pushing him back onto the bed with fluid movements. As he lost balance, he reached out to her waist and used his own scaled tail as a fulcrum. He pivoted both of them about and Calista landed heavily upon the soft sheets on her back. Valor landed on top of her and used the moment of utter bewilderment to his advantage. He eased himself between her legs and grinded his hips against her own.
A smirk curled the edges of her muzzle and she reached up to caress his broad chest with a soft palm. "So you do learn. It's good to know I'm not trying to teach a brick wall."
He grinned at her and leaned down to kiss her deeply upon her animal-like muzzle. "I'm not completely closed minded." He winked slyly to her and gently pressed his arousal into her moist folds.
The assassin beneath him gasped as he entered her and wrapped her tail around his waist. He loved the feel of her soft black fur against his bare skin. Part of him wished there was an animal version of her in the world somewhere he could skin and make a coat out of, but he knew it wouldn't be the same. He leaned down and nuzzled into the swell of her furry breast. It didn't take him long to find her perked nipple.
He closed his lips around the hardened nub and nibbled gently while he caressed her other ample breast with a free hand. He cupped her swell against his palm and smiled against her bust as her chest rumbled with a pleasant moan.
He slowly drew his hips back and eased into her once more. He took up a slow and gentle pace, but a frustrated growl reminded him how much she disliked gentle behavior. He subtly rolled his eyes and pulled his hips back once again until his tip barely remained within her body. "Complain and I'll stop," he warned.
"I can go far longer without than you can, Valor."
He knew the stern look in her golden hues was no bluff.
He cupped her breast against his palms and squeezed lightly as he drove into her sharply. She gasped and gave him a victorious toothy grin. He didn't give her much more time to gloat. He drew his hips back and slammed against her again. One of these days, we're going to do it my way, foreplay and all. Deep down he knew that was probably an untrue statement, though.
As he drove into her hard and fast, the assassin arched her back and pressed her chest more fully against his hands. Her core rumbled with another deep moan and a squeal tore from her throat. He grinned at the reaction he could get from her and gave her breast a tighter squeeze. He was always afraid to hurt her, oddly enough, so he never squeezed her too much. But it was by no means a gentle caress either.
Her velvety insides squeezed him tightly and heat rushed over his length as she reached her first peak. He gave a triumphant grin of his own and pulled himself out of her. Good, he always liked it when she got off so quickly.
As he slipped free of her, she gave a quiver and opened her eyes to stare up at him confusedly. The surprise only heightened as he flipped her over and pressed himself back into her. She gave another squeal of delight and rose up onto her hands and knees.
She rocked eagerly back into his every hard thrust against her. She was really getting into the submissive position for the first time he could remember and he had to reach out to grab her hips just to keep her from rocking too far away from him! He guided her movements with rhythmic pushing and pulling while he in turn filled her body faster and harder with every powerful thrust.
"Enjoy it while it lasts!" she called out. How did she always know what he was thinking!? Was he really so transparent? He shrugged it off and leaned over her to bite her neck. She'd left a few marks on his shoulder when she'd held him down and ridden him, it was his turn to repay that kindness. If she was actually going to willingly be the submissive one just this once, he was going to give her the full packaged deal!
As his teeth tightened against her neck, she arched her back and cried out in ecstasy. Her body pulsed and quaked around his length and again he felt her heat rush over him. Her knees gave out and they collapsed forward onto the soft purple bed. Her body milked his length in an animalistic need and dragged him over the edge. He moaned against her neck and felt his length spasm deep inside of his Syssan lover's belly.
His essence rushed into her in copious amounts and her body drank in every drop. It seemed to go on forever! He moaned against her and she growled and squealed into the bedding beneath. After too short a time, they sank into a shared afterglow.
As he rested against her back, Valor felt her body gently vibrating in a soft purr. It quickly grew into a rumbling growl of contentment and he breathed a pleasant sigh. He loved that the most about their little romps. He knew she had to have some feline in her the way she arched her back and purred for him.
He pulled away enough to kiss her neck gently then laid his head beside her own. He closed his eyes and breathed in deeply her scent. He let her purr rumble in his core and sing everlasting into his ears. He trailed his hands along her arms and ultimately interlaced his fingers with her own as they rested against one another.
He didn't want to spoil the moment with words. He just wanted it to last forever. There in that moment, the world no longer burned around them, the _Invincible_no longer chased them, and it didn't matter that their lives could end at any time. All that mattered was their hearts beating in time with one another.
All good things must come to an end, but he wanted this to last as long as was possible.
