Chapter 5
Voyage
The sun shone down on a small clearing in the middle of an otherwise dark jungle. Seated in this clearing were three creatures. Ranging from seven to eight feet tall the tall bipedal golden furred creatures were imposing. One, obviously a warrior from the way he was constantly scanning the surrounding, and the other two somewhat more diminutive ones who huddled together talking low. Then the younger of them stood and walked up to the large warrior.
"Do you think he is coming, Arutha?" The female asked.
"He said he would be here we will wait a little longer, then if he is not here, we will return to the village." The young warrior said, not once stopping from watching their surroundings.
Suddenly there was a rustling sound from the jungle and all three Meechan whirled to face it, the tension in their bodies easily visible.
From the jungle stepped a figure wholly unlike the three Meechan that stood before it. This new appearance at first appeared to be covered in a hide that was a swirl of greens and yellows and several colors in between. With a large hump on its back, it quickly became apparent that these were clothes and not any natural colorations.
The Meechan were a little unnerved, as they had never seen Sean in full combat gear, His mottled green yellow Reactive Combat Armor they had seen him in but never so obviously dressed for war as this. A Mk.23 suppressed pistol was strapped to his left thigh, a Five-Seven tactical was strapped to tactical vest in a cross draw holster. Clipped with a hands free strap to his chest was a compact PDW-90 and attached to hard points on the back of his combat armor, barrels pointing in the air he had a M-110 sniper rifle and a USAS-12.
Ignoring the Meechan's surprised looks at his sudden appearance and alarming appearance, he dropped the two large rucksacks he had been holding and beckoned the Meechan over.
"here, Arutha, you take this one, its heavy and I won't be able to carry both." Sean said quickly in a commanding voice that brooked no argument. The large warrior quickly stepped forward and put the rucksack on his back as he had seen Sean do. Sean then removed his own helmet and place it on the ground next to him.
He then turned and began to dig into his own pack and came up with three radios, each that could be clipped onto the belts the Meechan wore.
"In case we ever get separated, you can talk to me through these, I'll show you later, and I can home in on your locator that inside them." Sean said to the puzzled looking Meechan.
"I want to make one thing clear to all of you before we set off, I'm in charge here and when I say something you need to do you do it immediately, you can ask them after you've done it. Clear?" Sean said suddenly, startling Arutha who had never seen this side of Sean. While they had met only two days ago Arutha felt that he could trust Sean with his life.
As the startled Meechan all shook their heads in acknowledgement and suddenly Sean was back to his calm and easygoing self. Arutha wondered at this sudden transformation and knew there was a lot more to his newfound friend than he had originally thought.
Sean then turned to the second female Meechan and frowned as he realized he didn't know who she was. Then suddenly he remembered the elder saying something about another Nachi who was awaiting escort to the Nachi school, as he thought of it.
"Excuse me but I don't know you're name." Sean asked politely. The Nachi stared into his eyes for a few seconds in a way that made Sean begin to feel uneasy.
"My name is Tara, savior." She finally replied and broke eye contact with Sean.
"Savior?" Sean asked puzzled.
"Yes Sean, you will be the savior of our people though you know it not." Tara responded cryptically.
"Look, if you know something just tell me, don't play fuckin' head games with me." Sean almost snarled back his calm facade gone. Sean didn't like it when people knew things he didn't. It made him feel uncomfortable. Especially about something that seemed as important as this.
"I have told you all I can tell you, all will be revealed at the proper time." Tara simply said coolly.
Sean realized that he wouldn't get anything more out of her and so simply set off on the trail the rest following behind him.
It was after nearly an hour of walking that Sean finally managed to regain control of himself. Now he was mostly angry at himself for losing it like that, Tara shouldn't have been able to get to him like that. The simple fact was that he was shaken.
Behind the calm and collected mask he usually wore inside he was secretly scared and confused, he just hid it well. The truth was he missed his world, he didn't want to be in this strange world.
Just as he was thinking this Syphis took this time to sidle up next to him. He glanced over at her then put her out of his mind concentrating on where he was going. She slowed her pace slightly to keep up with his smaller stride.
"You shouldn't let her get to you like that." Syphis said after a while of walking along silently. Sean glanced behind him and saw the others out of earshot but not too far behind.
"I know, I normally wouldn't have lost it like that." Sean said quietly.
"Do you know what she was talking about back there." He asked suddenly. Syphis had a fleeting look of guilt before she responded.
"Tara's first manifestation of her power was in seeing the future prophesying if you will, it's not that uncommon and they generally are correct. She probably saw something she doesn't understand right now and isn't ready to share it until she understands." Sean thought he understand now at least or at least had a better understanding than he did previously.
It was several hours later when Sean finally called a halt and they began to settle down for the night. As the others were settling in and trying to find a comfortable place to sleep Sean approached where Arutha had plopped down.
Opening the rucksack that Arutha had set down Sean pulled out the box of claymores he had placed inside. Cracking open the case he began placing them along likely avenues of approach, set to tripwire detonation rather than command detonation.
This done he began unlimbering himself of all his weapons except for the USAS-12, his preferred weapon for having to put anything down within 100 meters. This particular shotgun was loaded with SCMITR and flechette rounds, a large improvement over standard buckshot as they had a smaller dispersal pattern, hence longer range, and they could penetrate body armor easily. Sean was concerned at first if the small rounds would be enough to put down a charging Meechan, but the sheer system shock the flechettes would do would probably kill a Meechan as well as a human so he shrugged off his concerns.
Sean had first watch then Syphis followed by Tara and finally Arutha. Sean wasn't too concerned about Arutha or himself falling asleep but he was a bit nervous about Tara and Syphis. Finishing up his watch he went over and gently shook Syphis awake informing her it was her watch. once he was certain she wasn't going to fall asleep again, Sean finally allowed himself to drift off to sleep.
Sean was suddenly awaked by an loud explosion and a hideous screaming. Someone hit the claymores was his first thought and he wasn't wrong. Although he was surprised to be attacked so early in their trip not so many miles from the village he hadn't been unprepared for it. Grabbing his shotgun he leapt to his feet just in time to hear another claymore go off to more screaming. He quickly donned his helmet and the View immediately flicked from dark black to an infrared image.
Sean grinned even with all the chaos around him, the attackers thought they had the advantage in the night, they were wrong. Shouting for the others to stay down, Sean began searching for targets.
Then Sean saw what was attacking them. Large bipedal reptilian creatures, there must have been twenty of them, all at least 13 feet tall, larger than the tallest Meechan Sean had ever seen by a good three feet. More than double the size of Sean's now diminutive seeming 5'10".
Sean saw Arutha stabbing at one with his short sword only to watch in horror as it skittered of the thick natural armor they seemed to possess. The giant reptile merely smashed Arutha aside as if batting aside a troublesome fly.
Off to the side another one of the monsters set off a claymore not ten feet in front of it, catching the nearly 300 pellets in the chest and legs and giving two of its companions to either side a bad peppering of half molten steel ball bearings traveling at nearly four thousand feet per second.
Well at least these things can be kill Sean thought glancing at the nearly destroyed corpse. Then Sean had no more time for thinking. Arutha and the two Nachi had already been suppressed or perhaps the two Nachi had managed to run off, Sean hoped they hadn't tripped a claymore on the way out.
There were about fifteen Reptiles left and Sean only had 20 rounds in his shotgun. Grabbing franticly around him he came up with his PDW-90, increasing his load out by 50 5.7mm round, not that he thought they would do much good against these towering behemoths clad in their naturally resistant armor, and clipped it to his chest as he backed away from the monsters and put his back to a large tree as he considered his options in a split second.
He could run, but that would mean abandoning Arutha and possibly the Nachi as well, but it looked like they had slipped away once they were attacked as he didn't see any evidence of them around. Or he could fight, and probably die. Sean took another step back and nearly went down as his foot landed on a M-67 that must have somehow been knocked over to where he was in the confrontation.
Reaching down Sean depressed the spoon and removed the pin, throwing the grenade past the monsters, so the reptiles were between him and the fragments Sean decided he would fight, and if need be die.
Taking aim at the nearest hostile Sean stroked the trigger twice hearing the distinct coughing bark of the shells firing and the buzzing sound Flechettes made when travelling through the air. The large reptile was hit once in the chest and once again in the throat and face. The hostile went down at once as the more than one hundred inch long needles shredded its face chest and throat.
Sean began advancing towards the enemies using the same double tap technique and was growing confident that he might actually be able to pull this off when the Shotgun clicked on empty.
With only fifty rounds of 5.7mm and with still five reptiles remaining Sean knew he would have to retrieve either another drum of shotgun ammo or his CAR-15. Sean grinned at that thought of what the large .458 rounds would do to the hostiles.
Drawing the PDW-90 Sean desperately tried to think of a way he could get around the closing Reptiles, grateful at least that they didn't seem to wield any weapons other than the six inch wickedly sharp curved claws they possessed. Sean was still steadily drawing back and was now almost 30 meters from the camp when he decided to make his move.
Dashing forward and rolling right between the legs of one directly in front of him, he came up firing off hand at the reptile behind him and kept firing until the clip ran dry. Brilliant move Sean, he thought, waste fifty fuckin bullets and get maybe ten hits, real smooth.
The reptile made a quick slash at Sean catching him on his arm and knocking away his weapon. A lance of pain shot up Sean's left arm but he ignored it running as fast as he could towards his gear. He found Arutha lying near it and saw the two Nachi lying further beyond.
Sean fell to his knees next to his gear and grabbed the first weapon grip he found. Sean looked up and saw the three Reptiles closing in only 25 meters away. Reacting quickly Sean fired the M-202A1 FLASH. Or more correctly know as the FLame Assault SHoulder weapon.
Four 66mm rockets accelerated away from the now empty weapons pod and slammed into the earth a few feet behind the advancing reptiles. A large burning fireball quickly consumed the hostiles and would have scorched Sean as well if not for his armor.
Dropping the now empty weapon Sean collapsed to his knees, exhausted, spent. Only dimly aware of the burning pain in his arm, Sean slowly slipped once more into darkness.
