#2 of My Personal Star

First part of a story written for a good friend.

Valin could feel their eyes on him while he lifted the bottle to his lips. He didn't normally come to these things, but he owed the guy a favor and figured that it would be an interesting break from the normal week to drink a few beers and get stared at. All around the room, guys were hitting on girls, making out with them, laughing, flirting, and otherwise having a good time. Sighing, Valin stood up. "I'm getting another beer. Don't wait up for me." The collective groans of the girls surrounding him lasted until he was out of sight before they started talking about him, typical 'omg he's so cute.'

As he walked towards the kitchen, frowning at the mess being left behind by everyone, Valin greeted a few other soccer players and sparring partners. Opening the door, Valin nearly dropped his bottle as he spotted a somewhat bored looking otter across the room. Walking in, he dropped the bottle in the trash and grabbed another, trying to hide his blush. No one knew...and he wanted to keep it that way. Turning away from the fridge, Valin found himself face-to-face with the otter. "Oh, sorry. Didn't meant to get in the way. I was just..." The otter smiled faintly, stepping back. "Just looking for a friend."

"No worries. I'm always ready to apply." Valin laughed nervously, rubbing the back of his head. "I'm Valin. Soccer." Valin started to extend his hand, but stumbled as a large bull shoved him out of the way to get to the fridge, falling into the otter's arms. "Oh, uhh..heh..." Valin blushed harder, as he stared into the otter's eyes.

The otter blinked as he caught Valin. "Well then, new friends and moving fast. I'm Martin, swimming and track. Why don't we move to somewhere less crowded? Can't have either of us getting hurt and ruining our careers." Smiling, the otter helped Valin straighten up before walking into the hall before the wolf had a chance to react.

Valin tried to follow, but collided with a surge of people as pizza arrived behind him. Struggling to get through the crowd, the wolf shoved hard against the furs, but made little headway. Finally reaching the last few stragglers, Valin made his way into the living room, but pulled up short. Martin, standing across the room, was locked into a deep kiss with a blonde female dingo that was groping him like no tomorrow. Growling and trying not to break down, whether in anger or tears he couldn't tell, Valin stormed out of the house, climbing into his car and driving off.

Walking back into his dorm in a huff, Valin growled at the sight of his roommate, a buff polar bear, in just a towel and cooking up a storm. "Put on some fucking clothes. That's the rules, or people will get the idea that you like flaunting your body to guys." Valin tried to push past the bear, but the defensive football player kept getting in the way.

"Come on now. You were supposed to be gone for another two to three hours. Had to have some personal time. So, come on, tell your buddy Caleb what's bothering you." With a sudden motion, Caleb grabbed Valin's arm and swiftly moved them both to the couch. "I know that look. Girl snub you? Use you? Someone take the last slice of your pizza?" Caleb laughed gently before getting serious.

"No, nothing like that. Just terrible drivers." Valin tried to get up, but Caleb intercepted and pinned him back to the couch. "Fine. Just..saw someone I liked end up with someone else at the party. Thought they liked me too, but clearly I was deluding myself. That's all. Didn't stay for the pizza." Valin finally managed to get off the couch but paused at the hallway to their shared room. "But...thanks for listening..."

Caleb sighed. "Listen, life's like football. Sometimes a good play goes wrong, and a desperate one works wonders. You just have to run the play and let the ball land where it may." When Valin just stared at him, Caleb sighed again. "Life just happens. Roll with the punches." Caleb got up and punched Valin in the shoulder playfully, quickly reaching down to grab his towel before it fell. Valin laughed at Caleb before walking into their room, cheered up a little and dropping onto his bed.

Caleb walked into the room, dressed in just his boxers and paused in the doorway, staring at the bed with Valin's sleeping form silhouetted in it. A tear rolled down his cheek as he stared, before scrubbing it away and climbing into his own bed. 'If only you really knew...if only you were like me...if only you DID like me.' Caleb stared across the room for a while, jumping slightly when Valin rolled over, but sighing in relief when he remained asleep. 'I hope your dreams are restful...my sweet.'

Valin was walking down the hall to class, chatting happily with Caleb and some other friends. It seemed that, for the time, he had forgotten about Martin. The group is laughing happily as a fox pulls out a soccer ball and pulls back for a throw. "Go long!" he cried, letting the ball loose with a strong toss that carried it nearly to the end of the hall before bouncing off the walls and floor around the corner. As it flew, Valin struggled with the others that were after the ball, laughing and shoving playfully. He finally broke free of the pack and charged forward, rounding the corner at top speed and running headfirst into someone turning it at the same time, sending books and papers flying everywhere.

"Oh fuck, I just got them organized too. What the hell did you run into me for?" Valin shook his head, focusing on the speaker. Martin sat on the floor, hair disheveled and looking upset until he saw who had run into him. "Oh, it's you. First you run away, then you run into me. Well, that's just good luck. I've been looking for you." The otter glanced at the other guys, who were whispering to themselves. "Perhaps we could speak alone...away from other ears."

Valin growled, shoving a book towards the otter and leaning in close to whisper angrily. "Yeah, like last time? Moment I walk away, you start sucking the face off of the nearest girl...." Valin glanced at his friends as well, not noticing the look of pain that shot through Martin's eyes. "Yeah, like I'll let that happen again. I prefer my conversations make-out free. If you want it so badly, why don't you just find a girl and jump her? Certainly worked last time we met."

Valin started to get up, but Martin moved faster, getting right in his face and whispering urgently. "Please, just let me explain. After...this..." He motioned to the mess of papers scattered across the floor, "I think you owe me that, at least. Give me just...ten minutes of your time. I'll meet you at the little café on campus at 5. I promise, I'll explain everything."

Grumbling under his breath, Valin started gathering up the books and pages and thrust them at Martin. "One chance. That's it. Make it quick, make it good, or make yourself gone." Ignoring the worried look in Martin's eyes, Valin straightened up, grabbing the ball that had come rolling slowly back and rejoining his friends. "Talk about running into old acquaintances. Let's get going."

Caleb nudged Valin with a laugh. "Ten bucks says that's the guy that got you in a pissy little mood the other night. Spurned the great and mighty Valin's attempts to tap dat." A collective 'oooohhh' went up from the group as Valin turned his angry eyes on Caleb, a devilish grin playing across his face.

"Oh? Was this before or after you were all but throwing yourself at me in just a towel? Nearly lost it at one point. Acting all concerned for me, almost thought you wanted to get in my bed...and my pants." Caleb looked shocked until Valin burst out laughing and punched the bear's shoulder. "Man, that look. Priceless." Caleb started chuckling nervously as the group jostled them both around.

'Yeah....that's what happened...' Caleb looked at Valin before punching him back. "Come on, loverboy. Let's get to class so you can go get coffee with waterboy. Prepare your lips now because I'm sure you'll be making out like mad soon enough." The mood lightened, the group walked off, leaving Martin staring after them with a worried look in his eyes.
