Chapter 5
The sun woke him, how long had he slept? He opens his eyes slowly, adjusting to the bright light.
"Too bright..." he murmured, turning away from the light and for a moment surprised to find someone next to him. Cathrin was still asleep, the sun shining on her gray fur, making it appear like pure silver. Already tempted he brushed over her shoulder, ever so slightly. Her fur was amazingly soft and felt almost like silk.
He held on, realizing the potential for an extremely awkward situation if she would happen to wake right now. He took his arm back and got up.
"Dead asleep..." he thought as he looked at her for a while. Breakfast would be an idea, he concluded and went to the kitchen, preparing something to eat.
He chose some cereals and fruits, hoping she would like it.
'I should ask her what kind of food she likes.' he thought and brought the breakfast back to his room. She was still sleeping, he checked his watch.
About 12 pm.
He sat down in front of his PC, quietly as he didn't want to wake her up.
He checked his messages while eating, nothing interesting mostly, a message from Kuro, complaining about his partner, Pyro's, consume of food.
Sighing Damien looked around, Cathrin was still asleep. Looking at her for a while he reached for paper and pencil. It was a motif that was just too perfect to miss. He spent a few minutes drawing until he heard her waking up.
"Good morning." he said, packing aside his drawing.
She yawned. "Good morning, Damien."
"Breakfast is ready," he said pointing at the food he brought, "So what are we gonna do today..."
His all-day-schedule was kinda busted. Normally he would spent hours in-game but now it wasn't even possible log in anymore.
So he decided to go to the mall again, looking for some new games. This time with public transport as there was no bike no more. Another thing he couldn't hide from his mother, as always. She was furious when a call came from the police stating they had recognized the license plate on the bike, even scheduled an appointment for him, so they could ask some questions.
Good thing was that it was set for a few days after he would have already left with Cathrin for the digital world, so he didn't really care. At least he wouldn't have to explain how he got out of this mess alive and, mostly, unharmed .
As he looked through some games in a store a short tune came from his pocket, telling him there was a message. He took out his phone.
Are you alright?
Cathrin. She insisted on coming with him, hidden from plain sight of course. She followed him over rooftops, in shadows and the same. He had given her an old phone though, she wanted to stay in contact, just in case.
She was a very protective kind, as he already realized.
Yes. He wrote, Nearly done, hungry?
A moment later he got an answer.
Yes, thank you.
Fearing she would come inside if he would let her wait any longer, he grabbed a game, and headed outside. He bought some pizza on his way out.
They meet in a small park next to the mall, many trees, not much people. It was autumn after all, so they could eat undisturbed.
"It tastes different." Cathrin stated after she finished the pizza.
"Well it's a Hawaiian pizza. You didn't like it?"
"No, it was tasted good." she looked around for a moment. "Do you come here often?"
Damien finished up his pizza, "Well, the mall, yes. First time I've been here in the park, though."
"Why that?"
"I'm more the... stay-at-home-person." he admitted.
"It's very nice here. Can we stay a while?" she asked
"Sure." he nodded.
They stayed long enough for Damien to drift off into a light sleep.
When he woke again he realized that it was dark. He looked around, but Cathrin was no-where to see. He saw some other people walking around. As soon as they were out of sight, she appeared right besides him.
"How long did i sleep?"
"A while, I didn't want to wake you."
Damien checked his phone.
"Damn. Last bus drove half an hour ago..." He sighed standing up. "Up for walk?" he asked.
Cathrin still remained out of sight. It was late, but some people were still walking and driving around. He walked for a while in silence when he noticed three guys walking towards him. Nothing too special about them, but somehow they seemed threatening. He thought about crossing the street for a moment.
Getting paranoid? He thought to himself.
He took no further notice of them until one rammed into his shoulder.
"Watch where you're going!" the thug said.
"You walked into me." Damien complained, maybe not the best idea.
"Whats in that bag?" the next asked.
"Nothing of you concern." Damien backed up a bit, but they surrounded him, he found himself back against the wall.
"But we want it!" his fist darted towards Damien, too fast for him to react. He was hit in the face, with the back of his head slamming against the wall.
His sight went white from the pain for a moment, but then he heard something.
"Let him be!" a calm, yet threatening voice demanded.
"What the fuck?!"
Damien saw only a blur in the air as the scabbard of her sword hit the first guy into his stomach, then straight against his head. Groaning the man fell to the ground.
Now she stepped into the light, slowly laying her hand around the hilt of her sword.
"Do I have to repeat myself?" she asked and in a fluid motion she drew her blade form the scabbard.
Damien recognized it, the same sword she used back in the game, "Onyxedge".
The other two thugs stood there in shook for a moment, then turned tail and ran as fast as they could.
"Are you alright?" she asked, sheathing her sword.
He just nodded. But then he saw the first thug standing up again, groaning. He silent clicking noise was heard and he saw a knife in the mans hand.
"Cathrin, be...!"
But she was already aware of it. She whirled around, the scabbard hitting his hand, breaking it and forcing him to let go of the knife.
The thug screamed in pain, but Cathrin turned around again and in the same motion she drew her sword again.
"Wait, Cath..."
Too late.
The blade cut flesh and bone, stabbed straight through his chest. The mans starred at the blade in his chest, he coughed and blood dripped from his mouth.
She withdrew the sword and the man fell lifeless to the ground.
"Shit." Damien stared at the corpse with wide eyes.
Cathrin grabbed him and after a spinning sensation he found himself in his room again.
"Are you okay?" Cathrin asked, out of breath from the far teleport.
"You..." he sat down, dizzy himself from the teleport. "You killed that guy!" he shouted hysterical.
She looked at him for a moment, she seemed puzzled.
"Yes..." she answered, still wondering "This was the first time you saw someone dying, I suppose?"
Damien looked up, nodding.
"Did you have to..." he asked?
"I just wanted to protect you, I didn't want to upset you."
They remained silent for a moment, Damien needed a moment to collect himself, to calm down.
After a moment he said, "It's not about me being upset... I just... You didn't have to kill him."
"I suppose..." she said unsure how to react. "I just reacted, This man was a thread."
Damien sighed. He tried to understand her, her world was dangerous, the game told him as much. Enemies, feral Digimon and the same.
"I just wanted to protect you." she whispered.
Damien looked at her. Her confused look changed into a worried one.
"I... I think I can't blame you for that, but..." he sighed, "Next time just knock him out or something."
After another moment of silence he said.
"I want to ask you something, it's important."
"Of course." she replied quietly.
"It's on my mind since you came here. I want to know why you need our help and for what?"
Cathrin hesitated a moment.
"I told you that I didn't know... Yet, were simply not supposed to tell until you are in our world." she finally said, "I'm sorry."
Damien nodded, it seemed strange.
"But... I think you deserve to know." she said, "At one point the game introduced human enemies, do you remember?"
Damien nodded, an update that introduced a corporation with hired mercenaries you could encounter. They would appear at various places, with whole quests concerning on getting rid of them.
"Their name is Chimera, and they appeared in my world a while ago. At first only small teams, but more came. They started to hunt feral Digimon, they attacked several villages and even build bases in my world. They prepare... for a war. The Sovereigns saw our hope in you, the Tamers."
"Why us?" he asked.
"To be able to fight them we have to evolve and the easiest and most effective way for us to evolve is with the help of you. The Sovereigns said it's our only hope." she explained.
"You are at war with them... those Chimera-guys?"
She nodded.
"And we are supposed to be the new recruits?" Damien summarized.
Cathrin nodded again, looking down ashamed "So to speak, yes."
Damien laid down, sighing.
"Do you still want to help us?" Cathrin asked after a moment, concerned, "I would understand if you..."
"I will." He interrupted her, sitting back up.
She looked at him, the worried look on her face changed into a puzzled one.
"You saved my life in the accident..." Damien said, "you helped me with these guys back there... I owe you my life. So... I'd be a giant asshole if I wont help you now."
With a sigh of relief she knelt down on the floor.
"Thank you." she whispered, looking at the ground.
Damien sat upright again, looking at her. "Are you alright?"
"I am sorry." she said, still avoiding eye-contact, "I haven't told you the true reasons before, I killed that man and I would drag you into a war... forgive me."
Damien looked at her, speechless for a moment. Acting on impulse he leaned forward and laid his arms around her. She was startled at first and didn't move, didn't know how to react.
"Stop that," he said, "I will help you. I said so."
She didn't know what to say, his embrace had taken her by surprise.
"Just... I can't fight a bit," he said "I don't know if i'm a big help to you, but I'll try my best."
"Don't worry," she said, hesitating for a moment, but then she returned the embrace, "We will train... and I will protect you, I promise."
