My name is John. I'm a 17 year old at the time of this story and I'm going to tell you about how a small act of heroism can change your life forever.

I was walking through the forest bored out of my mind as I had nothing to do till my mom got home. She was a volunteer at the Pokémon center and went there every weekend to help out. As I was walking I heard a noise that sounded like something was in trouble. I ran towards the sound I heard but after about 10 minutes I couldn't find it. I sat for a while hoping I would hear the noise again. It didn't take long but I heard it again but this time it was closer and definitely a cry of pain. As I was walking through some bushes I came across a sight I couldn't believe. It was a young chikorita and was hurt bad. I tried to approach it to help but it kept hitting me with its vines. After a few minutes I decided to just sit there and try to calm it down. I wasn't sure if it could understand me but when I told it I was there to help it just looked at me with those big eyes and hinted a slight motion of joy. Again I tried to get close but this time it didn't swing at me. As I got closer I noticed it was a young female. All I wanted was to get her to the Pokémon center where my mom was and get her all fixed up. My mom never wanted me to have my own Pokémon as she was afraid I would get myself hurt. I picked her up and she wrapped her vines around me and I ran down to the Pokémon center which was only about a mile from where I lived. Once I got there I immediately called for my mother and showed her the chikorita and explained I found her in the woods like that. When my mom tried to grab her she wouldn't let go of me. I explained to the chikorita that I would be right here waiting and I wouldn't leave her behind. She smiled at me and let her vines down. Mom took her to the back and I sat there waiting as promised. After almost 2 hours my mom came back out and explained that she had a broken leg and some other minor injuries. She would be fine but needed to be watched closely to make sure her leg would heal properly. She brought me into the back where she was and as soon as I walked in the door she got a big smile on her face and tried to jump up with joy but went back down as her leg reminded her of her current situation. I sat there with her and then I looked up at my mom and asked her if I could take care of her for a while till she got better. She once again reminded me that she didn't want me having a Pokémon because of its dangers. I argued back how I saved its life and if it weren't for me she would be stuck out there on her own. Mom gave me a look of sorrow and said I could take care of her. Excited I jumped up and gave her a hug and said my thanks. Chikorita also expressed her gratitude to my mom in the form of a vine hug.

I stayed with her in the Pokémon center for 2 weeks. I never left her side other than to wash up. I was homeschooled at the time and my mom had no issues bringing me my laptop and books so I could do my studies. Chikorita would sit by me and watch everything I did. After the third week in the center she was finally but barely able to walk. She was allowed outside and no longer required to stay at the center so I picked her up and brought her to my house. My mom had already gotten the materials necessary to house a growing Pokémon. Food was among them. I brought her up to my room and fitted her a bed in which she could use but she decided she would rather stay in my bed with me. She would lay at the foot of my bed curled up by my legs and fall asleep there. I didn't mind it. It was actually rather comforting knowing there was a creature there who cared for me as much as I cared for her. A few weeks went by and it became summer vacation. I was relieved to be out of school for a few months. Even if I was homeschooled I didn't enjoy studying all the time. During the summer I figured I would spend all my time teaching chikorita a lot of stuff I knew, including teaching her English. I already knew she was rather smart by the way she always watched and listened to me. I asked her if she wanted to try it out and that made her even more excited. It showed her I really cared about her, and I did.

We knew it was going to take a lot of time as learning English is hard for anyone. We started with the basics and found she was a very quick learner. In just a month she was speaking simple sentences and names. She was always very excited moving around. Even with that cast on her leg for several months didn't seem to slow her down at all. During the second month of summer it was finally time to take that cast off. She leapt up onto my shoulder and we walked down to the center. By this time she was speaking fluently enough to understand and speak almost everything.

"I'm so glad I can finally get this off my leg"

"Yeah I bet. You've been wearing it for 5 months now"

"Ugh it feels like it's been longer than that."

"It will be off soon enough. You'll probably miss it"

"Yeah right, I can tell you I never want one again"

We continued the rest of our walk in silence just listening to the sounds of nature and other Pokémon playing in the woods. There was something I wanted to ask her but right as I was about to ask she cut me off and asked me to hurry up. We got to the door and met with one of the nurses. She brought us to the back and it ended up being the same room we were in the first time we were here. We resumed our conversation and I finally got the chance to ask her what I wanted to earlier.

"So now that you're all better are you going to go back into the woods?"

She looked at me with a strange expression which I couldn't read.

"Now why would I go do something like that after all you have done for me. That would be rude of me."

She smiled and gave me a tight hug. I knew she wasn't going anywhere.

"Butisn't there anyone who would miss you?"

"Unlikely. I was pushed out of a tree by my own brother because of..."

"What's wrong, you know you can tell me anything."

She looked at me with a bit of sadness in her eyes. She was looking for words but couldn't quite get it. Right then the nurse came it with a large tool designed to take off a cast without injury to the patient wearing it. I was concerned about chikorita. I didn't want her to suffer like that emotionally. We got the cast off and she walked around the room, not saying a word. When I asked her how it felt she just simply nodded. I knew she was hurting and I wanted to help. She leapt back onto my shoulder and headed out the door. I wasn't going home we were going on a hike first. Not through the woods but to a nearby lake I found.

"Where are we going?"

"To a place I found, figured you would like a nice relaxing swim in a lake I found."

"Oh. I didn't know you had plans."

"Neither did I."

She chuckled at the comment. When we got there she jumped off my shoulder and into the grass. She looked around not knowing where we were. I told her I wanted to talk to her in private in a quiet place.

"I'm worried about you. You got real upset when you started to mention what has happened to you. I just want to make sure you're ok and not going to run off for revenge."

"I'm ok, I promise. I just remembered what happened and I got a little upset about it that's all. Trust me I never want to see him again."

"Do you mind telling me what happened out would you rather drop it."

She looked at me with those eyes and I saw she wanted to forget it but decided to tell me anyways.

"My older brother and I were out playing around as usual. He was only a year older than me. We sometimes would battle each other and often times he would win. However this time I was beating him and he didn't like to lose. So what does he do? He uses his vine and grabs my leg and breaks it. Then he swings me up into a tree and without mercy drops me from the highest point. I landed right on my face and was knocked out. I woke up several hours later in severe pain and he was nowhere in sight. He left me for dead. If you never showed up, I wouldn't be here today."

She started to cry and I picked her up and held her close.

"I will always be here for you. You can count on it."

All she could do was smile into my arms and just hold me close. After a while she looked up at me and said thank you and then she laid back down. I just kept petting her on the back of the head. She finally looked up and decided she wanted to go for a quick swim before we left. I didn't have any other clothes on me so I just got down to my boxers and joined in. It was innocent normal swimming and playing around with each other, glad to have each other's company. It was Friday and it was the last weekend of summer so we decided we would go home and get some camping supplies and stay out by the lake. We went home and asked mom if we could stay out there. At first she wasn't sure if she was ready to let me out by myself for that long but chikorita told her that we will be fine and if anything comes at us she will protect me. Of course that worked and she said it was ok but we had to come back before noon on Sunday. I immediately ran upstairs and started packing my bag before we lost to much light from the day. Chikorita was laying in her spot watching me pack and reminding me what all I will need. I ran down to the basement and grabbed the small tent dad had before he left us. It was basically brand new. All packed up and ready to go she hopped up to her spot on my shoulder. Kissed mom goodbye, and headed off to the lake

Once we got there and had the tent set up we got a fire going and I started to cook up some food. I brought me some sausages and heated them up on a stick. Chikorita was enjoying her share of her favorite vegetables. I was just simply enjoying her company. She finally broke the silence and decided to start some small talk. She brought up that I started public school on Monday and was asking me if I was ready.

"Of course I'm ready. I just don't want summer to end just yet. I met the greatest friend and now I won't be able to spend all my time with her."

She looked up at me about to ask who and then realized I was talking about her and started to blush

"It's not like you'll never see me again. I'll be home waiting for you each day. We can play then."

"Your right. But do you know how hard it will be to focus when all I want to do is go home to see you."

"Then I will just have to go with you."

"I doubt they will allow that."

"I guess we will see Monday because I'm going with you."

"Alright if you insist. But for now it's late. We should get some sleep"

"Sounds good to me. Last one in is a rotten egg."

I put out the fire and got into the tent. I had grabbed the sleeping bag and unzipped it all the way allowing it to lay flat for both of us. I had 2 pillows, one for each but of course she opted to go without and use me instead. We laid for a while and she had fallen asleep before me. I kissed her head and said I love you and then soon I had fallen asleep as well.

The next morning I was up early. I gently moved chikorita off of me and decided to quickly wash up in the lake before she got up. I stripped down to my birthday suit and slowly entered the chilly water. I was only in for about 5 min when I heard chikorita get up and out of the tent. That was the first time I felt embarrassed in front of her. She had seen me before in only my boxers but I didn't want her to see me naked. She looked at me and got excited and ran into the water. She hadn't noticed I was naked.

"Good morning John. You're up early."

"Yeah but could you do me a favor"

"What'sup?"

"Well, you see I got up early so I can wash up before you got up so I'm not wearing any clothes"

Chikorita took a second to realize what I was saying but then realized that humans don't like to be naked in front of other people.

"Oh my I'm so sorry, I didn't know..."

"It's ok but can you let me finish, I'll join you shortly."

"Ok"

She got out of the water and went back in the tent to wait. Once I was done I got up and called her out. I was still only in my boxers but that wasn't a problem.

"Hey you want to get washed up as well. No sense smelling like a dumpster."

She joined me once again in the lake and I started rubbing her favorite soap into her soft fur.

"Oh god that feels so good. I'm in heaven."

"You must really enjoy this" I chuckled in return.

"What gave you that idea?"

"Just a lucky guess"

We finished up in the lake after a few minutes of swimming around. I figured now was a good time to make us some breakfast. We got out of the water, I grabbed a towel and she just shook herself dry. I got the fire going and she laid by it trying to warm up a little. We live in the mountains and even though it's the end of summer it's still pretty chilly early in the morning. The lake keeps most of its heat during the night so it wasn't too cold. I cooked up some eggs and bacon. Chikorita's favorite breakfast. Eggs scrambled and bacon extra crispy. We ate by the fire and simply relaxed as we remembered all the good times we have had so far. The sun was finally up enough to provide the warmth of the day and we decided not to waste it and using the GPS I had we located a trail off to the west and decided to go hiking for a few hours. I packed up the bag with supplies like batteries for the GPS, lunch, and a first aid kit. Other items were in there but decided not to take them out. We set off and quickly found the trail. We hiked for about 30 minutes and chikorita had to take a quick stop. She was a little tired but didn't want to stand on my shoulder like usual. When I asked her all she said was she wanted to walk for a while and experiance the hike. I was ok with that. Soon she decided that while walking was fun she enjoyed sitting on my shoulder more. She hopped on a large rock and jumped at me rather quickly and I lost my balance and we toppled over. We laid there laughing for a while but eventually we got up and continued our hike.

Later on down the trail we decided that it was time for some lunch. I unpacked the leftover sausages and we sat down under the shade of a large tree. Chikorita wasn't too fond of sausages but would eat them if needed. I gave her one and she ate it quickly.

"Hey that was quick, do you want some more?"

"Nah, I just wanted to get it down that's all."

Oh, well if you do I have plenty. I know you don't like them but you won't go hungry"

"Thanks but I'm ok for now."

"Ok if you insist."

We had a brief silence for a minute but it was interrupted by the noise of a hostile Pokémon. Chikorita jumped up on her feet in a defensive position. Out of the bushes came a Venipede. Of course we all know the poison will kill you quickly so we slowly backed away. It jumped at me and instantly chikorita used her vines and slammed it into the dirt. It tried to get up but she used razor leaf and knocked it out in seconds. She picked it up with her vines and moved it back into the bushes.

"I'm so sorry I didn't mean to go that far. I saw it jump at you and after that I didn't know what I was doing. Are you ok?"

Completely shocked by the events I looked at her with sheer amazement.

"YeahI'm great, I had no idea you could do that that quickly. You were amazing."

"Yeah. That adrenaline is some good stuff. I couldn't let it hurt you. I'm glad you liked it."

"Maybe we should head back to camp. It's about a 2 hour hike back now."

"I think that's a great idea. Not sure I like it back here anymore."

"YeahI'm sure glad I have you with me. I'd be toast."

She just smiled at me and hopped up onto my shoulder again. With the backpack on it left a support for her which she could lay on. She didn't fall asleep but rather was listening to the noises making sure we wouldn't get into another situation like that again. I pulled out the GPS from my pocket only to find it dead.

"Hey chikorita, can you reach in the bag and pull out the batteries I brought for the GPS. These ones are dead."

"Sure thing, hold on a sec."

She reached into my bag and pulled out the pack of batteries and ended up falling inside my bag.

"Uhh, a little help please."

I pulled the bag around and she popped her head out of the opening and just stared at me. I looked down at her and I saw in her eyes the pure lust she had for me. She honestly looked really cute sitting like that. I couldn't help but smile back at her. She looked up at me for a while and finally spoke.

"I heard you last night. You said you loved me."

I looked down on her and replied in a loving manner...

"Of course I love you. You're my everything. I would do anything for you. I wake up in the morning knowing I have someone who cares about me as much as I care about them. I'm lucky to have a friend like you. Nothing could top it."

She hinted on the word friend but left it at that thinking I could never understand how much she really loves me back.

"Well I just wanted to say I love you too. And if you think you're lucky to have me I'm really lucky to have you. You saved my life. I was left to rot and you came along and saved me"

"Well you did a great job saving my butt back there. What would I have done if I never had found you? I would have been done for as well if you weren't with me."

"Hey I guess you're right. We saved each other. Thank you again."

"And thank you."

We got back to the camp and decided to take a quick swim before the night was upon us. I lit the fire early because I knew we would be in there for a while. I got stripped down again and chikorita was nice enough to look away until I was ready in my boxers from earlier, which were now dry from sitting in the sun all day. I called her to the edge and picked her up and threw her into the water.

"What was that for you big bully."

"I was only making fun, you ok."

"Yeah I'm ok, you just scared the crap outa me."

"Well that's what I was aiming for."

She used her vines and grabbed me pulling me in with her.

"There now we're even. Don't throw me again. That sucks."

"Yeah I guess I deserved that."

We just stared at each other for a while and then she got real close to me and landed a kiss right on my lips. I was stunned. My best friend, even though she was a Pokémon, just kissed me. I wasn't sure at first how to react so I just stood there waist deep in the water. She looked shocked herself.

"I.. I'm so sorry. I. I didn't mean to. I mean I wasn't thinking. Oh dear I'm so sorry..."

"Hey don't be its ok. It's only natural right. And to be honest I really liked it."

She looked up a little confused.

"How... how is it natural? You're a human and I'm just a Pokémon."

"Don't worry about it. Who says we can't love each other. I've thought about it honestly but didn't think you were into me like that."

"Do you really think we can? I'm not sure society would like us if they found out."

And that's why we tell no one right."

"Right!"

She was already tired of swimming from not being able to stand so she was back on my shoulder again while I made our way back to shore to cook us some dinner. Once again she shook herself dry and I had to grab the towel. I lit the fire again as it had died it and we sat warming up. Chikorita was sitting on my lap enjoying the flames of warmth. I could tell she was thinking about something so I decided to ask.

"What's on your mind love?"

She smiled at the comment, looking up at me. Repositioning herself so it was easier on her neck.

"I was just thinking about the day."

"Yeah it was lovely wasn't it?"

"What'sgoing to happen when you go back to school? I'm sure you will find new friends."

"None of them will be as awesome as you."

"What about the girls. I'm sure they will be all over you."

"I'm taken."

"What about.... really. You would give up human relationships just to be with me."

"Of course, what makes you think I wouldn't?"

"I thought you may want to be with a human sometime."

"Nope. I will give up everything just to be yours. Nothing will change that."

She shivered with delight when she heard that. She cuddled back into my legs to get warm. I started rubbing her fur gently with my fingers. She breathed a long sigh of relief as my touch seemed to remove all doubt from her. We ate dinner right where we were. Still enjoying the heat from the fire as well as from my legs. She yawned and I did as well.

"You ready you head to bed for the night?"

"Yeah in just a bit. I'm too comfortable to move."

The fire was starting to die down from lack of adding wood. As it started to fade out I felt her shiver from the cool air hitting her. The mountain breeze was a little chilly for this time of year but it was the end of summer turning into fall. We retreated into the tent and prepared the sleeping bag again. I laid down and instead of laying down in her usual spot by my legs she was up by my chest wrapped up in my arm. She looked at me looking for any sign of disapproval. Upon not receiving one she laid her head down on my arm. She sighed again and I whispered in her ear "I love you forever and always." She didn't respond but I knew she heard me because a small smile grew across her face. We soon had drifted off to sleep, wondering what the future would bring us.

The next morning I had gotten up again and headed to the lake to wash up. I stripped down again and slowly got into the chilly water. Chikorita once again got up but asked through the tent if I washing up.

"Yeah I'm in the lake washing up. Grab your soap and join me of you'd like."

That was different she noted. He was allowing her to be with him when he wasn't wearing any clothes.

"Coming!"

She grabbed her supplies with her vine and headed out trying to hide her joy. She didn't know why she was so excited about it.

"Morning sleepy head. Did you get your rest?"

"Good morning to you as well, and yes I slept well. How about you?"

"Couldn't have been better. I like your new spot better."

"Oh good. Your feet sure can stink sometimes."

We laughed and continued our washing. I once again slowly rubbed her soft fur with her soap and she enjoyed the touch. She never mentioned anything about being in the water with me while I was naked but I can tell she was thinking about it. After I had finished washing her body she went under to rinse. We made our way to shore and when we got close she got concerned.

"Do you want me to go up first so you can get dressed?"

"Nah I'm ok with it. I figured what's the point of hiding anything from you. I trust you more than anyone else I know."

"Really? Isn't that a little weird though?"

"Not at all. We're all animals' right? It's natural and I don't see an issue unless you do."

"No I just didn't want you to get embarrassed again."

"Ok good. Just don't make a big deal out of it."

"Why does the weekend have to end so soon? I don't want this to end."

"Don't worry about it. In a few months it will be winter break and we well do it again. I promise."

"Well it needs to hurry. I can't wait"

"Patience girl. It will come. Besides we have school tomorrow. Aren't you excited about seeing what it's like?"

"Sort of, I'm not sure though. What will I do sit there all day while you study. If it's anything like homeschool I'm not sure I will enjoy it."

"I'm sure we can find something you like. And if not you can just sit home all alone."

"I would rather not. I want to be by your side forever. Or at least on your shoulder."

"You seem to really like that spot."

"My favorite."

"Well my shoulder is yours."

She kissed my cheek again and we resumed the silence. I loved having her up on my shoulder the entire time. I was starting to wonder where she would stay while I was at school. I'm not even sure if she would be able to join me. We will have to see tomorrow.

We got home with 10 minutes to spare. Mom had made lunch and we dropped the bag by the door and sat at the table. Chikorita was allowed up on the table and mom and I sat in our seats. Chikorita had her spot next to me and mom was across.

"So how was your trip?" Mom asked.

Chikorita and I looked at each other and had a nonverbal agreement that we wouldn't share our new love.

"It was great. We went on a hike. Swam in a lake. And most of all, we just relaxed the weekend away."

"Oh sounds like you two had fun. I'm glad you're back safe."

"Yeah Chikorita was great company. She even..."

"Had a great time. It was so nice to walk through the woods again. Brought back some memories of before he saved me."

I looked at her wondering why she didn't want to mention the incident in the woods but I let it go

"Oh really. I'm glad you had fun. Listen I have to get back to the Pokémon center. They are real busy tonight and I may be late. Here is some cash. Order a pizza if you get hungry. I love you."

"Love you too mom."

Chikorita and I just looked as mom has walked out the door and down the street.

"Why did you cut me off like that?"

"I'm sorry, I just didn't think it was the time to tell her about it. You know how over protective she is."

"I guess you're right. So what do you want to do tonight?"

"Honestly, I just want to sit down and relax the rest of the weekend away. I've got to figure something out in case they don't let me go with you."

"Hey don't worry about it right now. Let's focus on the couch and some TV."

"Sounds good to me."

We sat down on the couch and I flipped through the channels. I didn't have anything in mind but I'm sure I would find something on. Eventually we did find something. We sat there holding each other close. I decided I was going to lay down. I changed my position so Chikorita could still cuddle close by laying in my arms. We watched TV for a good 2 hours. I ended up falling asleep on the couch and Chikorita was laying still watching the TV. Eventually she decided she wanted to get up and stretch. She had woken me up by accident and I looked at the time. It was almost 10. We shut out the lights and went upstairs to get ready for bed. I got undressed and decided I would confront Chikorita about her actions over the weekend.

"I know you want my body, Chikorita. I was able to tell from this weekend. I just didn't see a way for it to be possible, but you showed me it was. I love you and if this is what you want I'm ok with it."

She looked back at me and then with an upsetting tone replied

"I'm sorry, I didn't want you to find out yet. I knew you weren't ready yet but I slipped up today. I didn't think you would feel the same way back towards me. I've had a crush on you for a while now."
