PART 12: Understandings
Max struggled. He lay in the fox's bed, trying his best to read his new manga book that Troy had given him earlier. Giving up, Max placed the book aside and watched Jamie come into the room and joining him in the bed. As they cuddled up together, Max nuzzled the fox and spoke.
"Do you think he hates us now?"
Jamie sighed, too busy thinking about what happened earlier to look at his lover's eyes. "I don't know." The two of them stayed silent. Max switched off the lamp and started to close his eyes, holding the fox close to him. He remembered it quite clearly.
Rei just stood at them, unable to believe what they had done. When his mouth did open, it made both Jamie and Max afraid of what he would say. "I. . .my only. . .f-friends. . .are. . .gay?!"
"Rei." Jamie started, moving close to the otter, but Rei quickly picked up a towel and pushed it into the fox‘s chest.
"Dry off. . .then leave. . ."
"Rei, please, come on."
"Dry off. . .then leave. . ." The otter repeated again. Without another word, Rei walked inside and into a different part of the house.
The two just did what they were asked. Once they dried off, they went inside and changed into their clothes. Heading out of the house, the two of them noticed Rei sitting next to the pools edge. Jamie wanted to talk to him but he didn't want to cause complications, or let the rift that had become between them deepen, instead, he opened the door and walked out with his snow leopard and headed home, hoping that they didn't lose Rei as a friend.
Rei sat on his bed in silence. He couldn't stop himself from replaying the day's earlier events in his head. He'd grown to like Jamie and Max but after that one moment, he wasn't sure if he could begin to understand it.
"You in here Rei?" Mark asked from the hallway. When he walked in, Rei tried to make it look like everything was normal. "Why did Jamie and Max leave early?"
"Oh. . .um, they said they had homework to do."
"Okay." Mark wasn't sure if he was entirely convinced. He could see it in the way Rei was sitting down, how he spoke and what he saw in his little brother's eyes. Something was bothering him but before he could say anything, Rei switched off his lamp and climbed into bed.
"Night Mark."
"Goodnight." Closing the door, Mark leaned against the door frame of his brother's room. Sighing a little, Mark walked further down the hallway and saw his dad working away in his office.
"Really? Well, I just moved in to my new place. Don't I get a little time to relax?. . .Yes I know that the business is really important. . . . . . .Oh, I got given a folder full of stuff about some project, I haven't read it fully, but I want to know where it is I'm going. . . . .is that right? I get to go to Washington D.C.? And I'll be staying at my usual hotel over there I take it?. . .Great, so when do I leave?"
Mark couldn't be bothered listening to any more of his father's work. He wouldn't be surprised if his father got up and left on a flight tomorrow morning, it was something he had become accustomed to over the years and whenever his mother wasn't around, he'd be the one looking after Rei and the house. Still, his father brought home a very good amount of money and it would keep them going for a long time.
Getting into his room, Mark started undressing and he placed all his clothes into the laundry basket and started getting ready for bed. His room was very large, much like his little brother's. A queen sized bed, large TV, laptop, many things. Getting under the covers, Mark started to lose himself in his thoughts. Most of them about the days earlier events. He made friends with Drake and Troy on the first day and the two were really good to him. He wasn't sure why, but he wondered if Drake and Troy would be together in the same bed right now. Not that he was gay or anything, he just grew curious.
[Must be really nice to hold someone] Mark thought yawning. Too much moving around had never given him the chance to even start a relationship with anyone making him still a virgin. It didn't bother him, he was too used to looking after his little brother and getting on with his own life. Still, he couldn't deny it. He just wanted to know what it was like for once.
The next morning, Rei and Mark were in the kitchen eating their breakfast. Mark was asking his little brother what he'd be doing at school today and Rei just replied "Usual stuff." Sighing, Mark continued to eat his food until his father came in.
"Morning boys."
"Morning dad." Mark said after swallowing a mouthful of cereal. Rei on the other hand just nodded.
"Well, I got a call from my work people last night."
"You're going on business already dad?" Mark asked.
"Afraid so. Another trip to Washington DC for me."
"How long this time?" Rei asked, not even looking at his father.
Taking some bread out of the cupboard, Lewis put a slice in the toaster and while it was being cooked, he pulled out a knife and some butter. "I'll be away for three weeks, maybe a little longer. But I'll be leaving while you boys are at school. Mark, it means you'll have to look after Rei and maybe go grocery shopping tomorrow."
"Don't worry dad, I know."
"Good." His toast popping up, Lewis placed it on a plate and started spreading the butter onto it.
Getting out of the seat, Rei walked off and out of the kitchen before walking upstairs. He added this to the amount of problems he already had. First, Jamie and Max were gay, secondly, he didn't know if he was their friend or if he wanted to be and thirdly, his father was leaving again. When he was in his room, Rei lay down on his bed and sighed.
"Rei you'll get a sore stomach if you lie like that after eating food." He knew it was Mark, but he didn't do anything, even as his older brother sat next to him. "Rei?"
"I don't care."
"What's wrong with you? Come on, you can tell me."
"Mark, not right now."
"Okay." Mark cuddled his brother before he got up and left the room.
Lying their, Rei wondered if he should have told his brother what had happened yesterday. But he didn't. He wasn't sure if he wanted to face Jamie and Max at school, even if it was inevitable. Both of their faces came into his head and he tried to get rid of them. Rei stared into nothing, wondering why he felt this way. In all of his schools and everyone he either met or seen, he couldn't recall ever seeing a gay fur or couple. He started thinking that he just wasn't used to it and maybe if he gave it a chance it would be okay.
A knock distracted him and his father, Lewis, looked at him. "You had time to sleep, come on. Time for school."
Getting up, the otter grabbed his bag and walked out of his room, trailing behind his dad. Mark joined him and got into the back of the car with him. When they were about to drive off, Rei got a feeling of dread inside him and it was building.
On the journey to the school, Mark looked over and noticed that his brother was becoming anxious. Rei was looking out the window, keeping his face away from him and his dad but Mark knew something must have been wrong.
[He didn't really speak this morning or mention Jamie and Max either. Did they have an argument?] Before he could even ask, the car stopped and Rei got out of the vehicle. When his father started driving off, Mark just hoped that his brother would be alright.
Everything should have been normal, but it wasn't. The teacher was talking about the day's lesson and the students were listening in to him. Rei sat in his seat, trying his best not to look at Jamie and Max who were sitting near him. He did look over and saw the fox's face looking at him. He could see it, Jamie wanted to talk to him desperately but the otter turned away.
Jamie leaned back in his seat and looked down at his work. Shifting his eyes, he could only see the back of the otters head. This morning, he'd tried to find the otter and speak to him about what happened in the pool, but he only managed to find him in class and even then the otter wouldn't look at him or Max.
The bell rang, alerting to everyone that it was the end of the lesson and the start of break. As students walked out, the fox and snow leopard picked up their bags and walked towards the otter.
"Hey Rei? Can we talk?"
"There's nothing to talk about." Rei said, picking up his bag.
"But we just want to explain."
"And I don't want to hear it!" Jamie grabbed the otters paw. But Rei just pulled away. "Don't touch me you fucking queer!"
The three of them stood there in silence. The fox took a step back, clearly hurt about what he was called. Walking off, the otter left the two in the classroom and immediately walked outside. He sat down in one of the quieter places and looked at the ground. He kept recalling Jamie's face after he called him that. Rei dragged his paw over his face and sighed, he wanted school to be over as soon as possible.
"So you guys are pretty much caught up on your homework?" Mark asked.
"Yeah. Only because he kept telling me to do it." Troy said, pointing at his dragon.
"And you got a reward by the end of it."
"Oh yeah, thanks love. It felt good." Mark watched them kiss and he couldn't help but picture the two in bed.
"Hey guys?" They both looked at him. "I just want to know. Umm. . .what's it like?"
"What? You mean. . .?"
"No. . .not the sex part. How does that work with you two anyway?"
"I'm not sure we should talk about our private life here." Drake said, and the otter realised that the hallway was crowded.
"Well, what's it like? Holding someone you really care about?"
Both Drake and Troy looked at one another and the panther moved forward. "Why do you ask?"
"Curious, I guess."
"Come on, haven't you ever had a girlfriend? Or boyfriend?"
Mark blushed a little and grinned. "Well, I don't know if I swing that way guys. But um. . .no, I haven't."
"You're not serious are you?" Drake asked.
"I am. Throughout all my schools, I was someone who could be friends with everyone and that was it. Nothing more. Plus, with dad moving us about a lot, I never really got the chance to have a relationship."
"So, you've never had one?"
"No. No girlfriends, no relationships, no dates."
"Wow."
"Awww." Troy moved forward and hugged the otter, making Mark blush right through his fur.
"Cut it out ya big muscle head." Mark said, pushing away from him. "Why'd ya do that?"
"You wanted to know what it was like holding someone."
"Yeah, but. . .oh never mind."
Drake shook his head and nuzzled the feline. "Hey, I'm here remember."
"How could I forget you?"
Again, Mark watched them kiss and he grinned. "I'll leave you two lovebirds alone, I have Home Ec period now."
They both said that they'd meet up later and the otter agreed. For now, he walked towards the appropriate classroom and went inside. This was only his second time in the room and yet he was surprised how many guys were taking this class. It wasn't all just cooking, it was also stuff like sewing and hygiene and safety. Mark had always liked this class and took it at all his previous schools. Ever since he was young, he always helped his mother out with things and by the time he was twelve, he started taking over his mother's housework, giving her time to focus on her work.
When the teacher came in, everyone looked at her from behind their cooking stations with their aprons on. "Okay everyone. You'll be making two items today, whatever you want. But you need to complete them in time, got that? On you go then." Everyone started getting their ingredients and equipment before going back to their work stations. Mark had grabbed everything he needed and turned his oven on. He had a recipe book with him but he was experienced enough what to use and when to do it. When his teacher came over, she was noting something down. "What are you making Mark?"
"Oh, I'm going to make an apple tart and some lasagna."
"Okay. Are you not using the recipe book?"
"No. I've done these plenty of times before. I know what to do."
"Alright, I'll leave you to it."
When she walked off, Mark started doing everything that was required. He smiled as well, thinking to himself. [Rei's always loved my apple tarts. Maybe this'll cheer him up.] Getting on with his work, Mark paid close attention to the clock and continued cooking and preparing his food.
Both Rei and Mark walked up the stone covered drive to their house. Rei had not waited on Jamie and Max and he pulled his brother away from Drake and Troy which had led to a lot of questions.
"I still don't see why we couldn't walk with them."
"It doesn't matter!" Rei nearly shouted. Ever since what happened in the classroom, he couldn't even bring himself to look at Jamie or Max. The fox looked hurt all day and Max was doing his best to try and keep the kit happy. The otter began questioning himself if what he did was right, he didn't know what to do with them, yet he couldn't stop thinking about Jamie and Max.
Getting inside the house, Mark placed his food in the fridge and picked up a note on the counter. "Dad left at two Rei."
"Fine." He could hear his brother walking upstairs and Mark sighed. Tapping his fingers on the counter, the older otter decided to try and find out what was wrong. When he got to his little brothers room, he knocked on the door and stepped inside.
"Hey Rei?"
"What's for dinner Mark?" Rei immediately said to him before he could open his mouth again.
"I made some food in Home Ec today, we can have that."
"What is it?" Rei asked, keeping his face away from Mark.
"Lasagne and apple tart."
"Okay. Let me know when its ready."
Rei walked around his room and switched on the PS3 and then going online to play ‘Soul Calibur IV'. Mark however didn't want to leave yet. Moving forward, he sat next to his brother and spoke to him. "You know, if there's anything else you want to-"
"I'm fine Mark!" Rei said through gritted teeth.
Knowing that he wouldn't get anyway, Mark got up and left the room. "I'll call you down."
Rei fell back on his bed and groaned. The last thing he wanted was to have an argument with his older brother.
"He just hates us doesn't he?" Jamie asked.
"He might be a little confused."
"He called me a fucking queer Max." The fox sighed and looked towards his bedroom floor. "And now I know how much it hurts to be called that."
Jamie's face perked up when Max cuddled him from behind and kissed his cheek. "We'll try again with him tomorrow. And I'll drag him if I have to."
"Wouldn't that make things worse?"
"I just want us to get this sorted out."
"Me too." Turning around, Jamie planted a soft kiss on his lover's lips.
Both Rei and Mark sat alone at the dining table eating the meal. "This is good." Rei told him.
"Really? You always like my food."
"You still want to be a chef don't you?"
"Yes. In a good restaurant where I can be head chef. Or maybe even having my own restaurant. That'd be a lot better."
"Yeah."
Mark watched his little brother finish off the meal he made earlier. That was Rei's first attempt to talk to him throughout the whole meal. When he himself was finished, he got up and took the plates to the dishwasher, leaving Rei alone for a few minutes. Coming back into the room, Mark had the apple tart in his hand and two plates. Sitting next to his brother, Mark smiled and started to cut the dessert into slices and he gave one to his brother.
"Here."
"Thanks."
"What's bothering you Rei?"
"Nothing."
"Rei, I'm not stupid. I know when something's annoying you and you can tell me about it. What's wrong?"
"Mom was right, you may as well be my mom."
Mark rolled his eyes. "Forget about that. Just tell me what's wrong." Rei stayed silent and looked away for a few seconds before looking at the food in front of him. He loved apple tart but now, with Mark next to him, he wasn't sure if he wanted anything. "Rei, come on. I cant help if you keep me in the dark. Just tell me."
"I. . .I don't know. . .if I should be friends with Jamie and Max."
"Why? You three were having a good time yesterday. I really thought you liked them."
"I did. Its just. . .yesterday. . .I saw something and today in class. . .I called Jamie something and I think I really hurt him."
"What did you do?" Mark asked, starting to get more serious.
"Its. . .just. . .well. . .w-when I went to get towels. . .I came back and. . ."
"And?"
"They were kissing each other in the pool."
"First Drake and Troy and now those two. Can't say I'm surprised."
Rei looked at him. "Wait, Drake and Troy are. . .gay too?"
"Yeah. And they're my friends. Is that what's bothering you? Just because they're gay?"
"I. .I just don't think we should be friends with them."
Mark shifted the food out of the way and looked at his brother. "I've practically raised you myself. Mom and dad were always busy making money and leaving me alone with you. I thought you wouldn't turn out to be some stupid homophobe."
"I-I'm not!"
"Then what's wrong with them? And what did you call him in class?"
Rei looked away from his brother. "Drop it Mark."
"No. You're going to tell me." Rei got up from his seat and headed towards the door. "Rei! Come here!"
"You're not dad. Or mom."
"Tell me."
"I called him a fucking queer. There, I said it!" Rei shouted before heading upstairs. Mark however got up and followed him.
"Rei!"
"Mark, just leave me alone!"
"The hell I will." Mark muttered under his breath. Going into his brother's room, he pulled the controller out of his brother's paws and looked at him. "Right, we're going to talk."
"Mark just stop it."
"Why did you call him that?"
"I. . .I don't know! I only met them and I find out they're gay."
"So. I knew about Drake and Troy just after I met them."
"Its not the same."
"Rei, please don't start this. It shouldn't matter who they like."
"But-" Rei began.
"You can be an idiot at times Rei. Does it really matter? What are you scared of?"
"I don't know."
"Are you afraid they'll start coming onto you? That they might kiss you or try to have sex with you?"
"I don't know. . .maybe. . .I'm not gay!" Rei nearly shouted at his brother but Mark didn't move. "I'm not gay Mark. . .I don't know how to act around them. . .I keep thinking that I'll have to. . .suck cock. . .or something."
"Rei shut up!" The younger otter kept quiet and looked at his brother. "Look, you don't start thinking like that. They are you're friends-"
"But they're-"
"Gay? So what, they're still you're friends. Just because they choose to love each other doesn't make them any different. You wont be forced to do stuff with them. You don't have to suck their cocks, they'll be happy just with each other." Rei looked down but Mark made him look at his face. "And you don't avoid them. Rei, they only want to be friends with you. Don't you want the same?" Rei nodded. "Then tomorrow, apologise to them and start hanging out with them."
"What do I do if they. . .want to do stuff with me?"
"Rei, that's up to you. It wont make you gay if you do decide to do anything. But, if you don't want to do anything, just be polite about it. Don't freak out like a lunatic like you did in class."
Rei sighed and looked down. "Okay. I'll talk to them tomorrow."
Smiling, Mark cuddled his brother and pulled him off the bed. "Well, I still have that apple tart left downstairs. You wanna help me finish it off?"
"I guess."
"Come on." Leading Rei downstairs, Mark had hoped that his brother would be okay from now on.
School was about to begin. Rei sat outside the buildings gates looking and waiting. After his little talk with Mark, he felt guilty about what he said. He just wanted to find the two and at the very least apologise. The bell rang and he wondered whether or not Jamie and Max were here today or if they just slept in. Getting up, he went to the right room. As he got in, he noticed the teacher marking him in for the day but he looked around and saw Jamie and Max talking to one another. Walking towards them, he sat down next to them and the two weren't sure if they should say anything,
"Hey. . .um, can we talk?" Rei asked the two.
"You're not here just to call me or Max a queer are you?"
"No. . .I want to say sorry."
"We'll talk later." Jamie told him. Rei sighed but had to pay attention to his teacher.
First period started and Rei was cursing the clock on the wall. Time seemed to be going extremely slow and it was annoying him greatly. He wanted it to be at break so he could talk with them. When it came to second period, he just decided to wait and to try and do as much work as possible. When break did finally arrive, Jamie and Max had taken Rei aside.
"You wanted to talk to us right?" The fox asked him.

"Why did you do it though? I mean, we really liked you and. . .you didn't even let us explain."

Sitting down on the ground, Rei looked at the two. "I'm really sorry about what I said yesterday."
Jamie sat next to him and sighed a little. "Its okay. Me and Max, we didn't want to tell you for quite a while. We didn't know how you'd take it."
"Yeah." Rei looked up at the clouds above him and then at the fox and snow leopard. "Does this mean we can still be friends?"
"Yeah."
"Thanks. Um. . .I just want to know. You guys wont make me do anything. . .will you? Like. . .I don't have to suck you do I?
Both Jamie and Max giggled a little. "No. Unless of course you want to do something with us. You're a good looking otter."
Rei blushed a little at the compliment. "T-Thanks. But you really wont?"
"Only if you want to do something Rei."
"Okay." Smiling a little, Jamie and Max walked off with their new friend at their side.
School was once again over and Jamie and Max were in Rei's pool again with the otter. Sitting near at the edge, Drake, Troy and Mark were laughing and exchanging stories with one another. In the pool though, Max was still trying his best to keep his chin above the water.
"Come on Max. Jamie and I can do it."

The fox moved forward. "You do know that coach will be giving us swimming lessons closer to summer, don't you?"
"I didn't know that."

"Be careful you lot. We don't need people drowning." Drake shouted to them.

"Alright." They pulled Max nearer to the shallows and let him go. After a while of fooling around in the pool, the three of them grabbed towels and headed inside the house.
"Lucky bastards." Troy said.
"What's wrong kitten?" Drake asked. Troy just pointed to the pool and the cast on his arm.
"Please take it off me Drake."
"I cant and you know it." Troy just pouted resulting in a kiss from his dragon.
"I'll admit that does make it better."
Back upstairs, the three were in the otter's room. Their fur was still damp but they felt better once they were dry. Still only in their swimming shorts, the three of them sat down on the bed and Rei leaned back.
"You guys want to do anything?"

"I do?"

Turning their heads, Max and Jamie wondered why he was standing there. "You alright Rei?"
Rei closed his eyes for a few seconds. His curiosity was building and he knew that there could be no going back from this. "Um . .well. . .you guys can take your shorts off if you want."
