In most cases, Ernie would have refused this proposal without a second thought, but since he had nothing better to do and he was feeling very confident (and somewhat stupid) at the moment, he readily accepted to this proposal. Talking to more citizens/soldiers, he discovered the general location of the dragons dwelling ("that mountain with a ring of smoke around it, duh").
