I Could Have Danced All Night
#3 of The Same Old Song and Dance
Vee rubbed her son's head absently as she stared at the phone on the bedside table of the small hotel room. He promised he'd call when he got there... She looked at the clock. 3:50 AM. It was so late now. He must have only forgotten, and calling now would only serve to wake him. She would sleep now and get up in the morning to a call from him begging forgiveness for forgetting. She kissed her wolf-son's head lightly and rubbed his cheek before settling into her own bed. Something must be wrong at home, she thought. I've got a bad feeling...
Brian opened his eyes slowly and reluctantly as light flooded into the bedroom from the window. "Morning already?" He yawned softly, stretching his lithe frame to its limit in order to wake himself up. Something next to him stirred at the motion, startling Brian out of the bed. He looked confusedly around the familiar room as the previous night's events came flooding back to his mind. This was really his room. So... none of it was a dream?
He felt as if he should be disgusted with himself. Society told him this, yet something was wrong...or right. He felt so...unsurprised. So happy. So... normal. Nothing about waking up completely without clothes next to his friend, the wolf, made him feel uneasy. He turned and looked at the grey form still in bed... and smiled. Did the ferret himself look that cute when he was struggling with sleep? He hoped so, in case the wolf woke first the next time they were together.
The next time...
He watched the wolf breathe softly for a time before deciding that he was not going to stir from bed within any reasonable time. He decided a shower would pass time well until his friend woke. When he did wake, they would have to talk. It was a talk that he was fearing mildly, and he was sure that the wolf felt very much the same. Still, a shower would be invigorating.
He went to the hall closet where the wolf family kept their towels and chose a large, soft blue one. Yawning, he took it to the nearest bathroom and shut the door. As the door closed, he shivered a bit. "It's cold," he breathed, quickly hurrying to the shower and turning the water on. As the water heated, he walked to the mirror and examined himself. He looked normal. His eyes were clear and his fur lovely. Nothing had changed physically. And had anything really changed mentally?
He turned to get into the shower and noticed a lump of black in one corner of the bathroom. He got closer to examine it in his ferrety curiosity and realized it was a simple pair of black boxers. He picked them up and stroked them lightly, loving the silken feel to them. "Oh my, I want these," he smiled, bringing them higher and rubbing them against his face, inhaling the musk still faintly present on them.
He put them on the sink where he could easily get to them after his shower and climbed into the rushing water, enjoying its soothing effect throughout his body. He grabbed the bottle of soap and lathered it through his white fur, losing the white bubbles in the process. He had once gotten out of the shower to look at himself covered in bubbles, which only confirmed his theory that it made him look like an incredible bubble-monster. Or like he'd grown his snowy fur out in a strange fashion. He washed the soap out and stood in the shower only a few more minutes before turning off the water. He would have stayed in the shower for much longer as he did at his own home, but he knew his friend's father would come complaining to the young wolf for any strange height of water bill.
Brian stepped out onto the rug in front of the shower and toweled off, watching his wet form in the mirror with a slight sort of vanity. He finished drying and put the final touch on his chosen look of the day; As he slid the boxers onto his body, he felt dirtier than he had before he taken the shower. But, as he told himself, it was the good kind of dirty.
He stepped out of the bathroom and, sensing no movement, started down the stairs with all focuses set on fixing some breakfast. Such a workout followed by a night of sleep really stirred up a monstrous appetite in the ferret. As he entered the living room from the stairs, however, his focus changed. "My my," he smiled, sniffing interestedly, "It smells like...sex in here." He was glad that the wolf's parents would be out of town for one more night, because it would be a rude awakening if his rather homophobic father were to come home to this.
A sound from behind Brian caused him to freeze in his tracks. A heavy footstep... maybe he shouldn't have thought so soon. He turned slowly, fearful of who might find at the other side of the room. The wolf at the other end looked fearful, too, as if more than a little surprised to see the ferret standing in his living room.
"Morning," Alex smiled, holding out a plate with some syrupy (and slightly burnt) pancakes, the smell of which Brian had not noticed due to the overpowering scent of the living room (not to mention his own soapy smell). "Pancakes?"
"Sneaky devil," Brian grinned, relieved that the only wolf in the house was his friend. "Waiting all that time for me to get into the shower to surprise me with pancakes?"
The wolf blushed, setting the pancakes on the kitchen table a few paces behind him. "Well... I-I... I thought it felt like the right thing to do. Are those my boxers?!" He frowned.
"They are, and it was," the ferret assured, walking forward and wrapping an arm seductively around his friend. "They smell delicious! "
"Or is it the living room?" Alex laughed, looking nervously toward the clothes that they had left in the room the night before.
"Maybe a little of both. It's not meat, so you put something special on them for me, I trust?"
"Syrup and butter?" The wolf smiled hopefully.
"I was hoping for something," the ferret winked, sliding his hands lower to the wolf's boxers that he had obviously recovered from the night's activities, "A little less sweet."
"You don't like sweet?" Alex flirted, sliding his own hands lower.
"Of course I do," Brian breathed, leaning in closer to the wolf's face. "I'm just in the mood for salty."
The mood was broken by a sharp ringing from nearby, startling both of them, to which Alex sighed. "Phone," he frowned, leaning in to steal a kiss before running to the ringing device and bringing the receiver to his ear.
The ferret took the phone call as a chance to dig his own phone out of his jeans and place a call to his mother. He figured he would be sticking around longer than he had originally planned.
"Hello?" Alex said, attempting to sound less disappointed than he felt about missing out on another bit of loving with his ferrety friend.
"Hey, honey!"
"Mom!" Alex gasped, turning to look at the ferret to transmit his look of surprise. "How's it going?"
"It's fine. I trust you're taking care of the house?"
"Of course, mom."
"Good, good. How's dad?"
Alex choked. "Dad? I thought he was with you!" Brian turned in surprise at these words, too.
"No, hon'." She sighed, "He left yesterday because there was some meeting that he had to get to urgently this morning."
"Oh, I see..."
"So you haven't seen him?"
"No, sorry. But I just woke up. What time is the meeting?"
"It started about an hour ago, I suppose."
"I probably just missed him or something, then." He hid the panic in his voice very well, he thought.
"All right, well have him call me when he turns up," she sighed, sounding incredibly depressed at the whole situation. Alex would have inquired further, had he not had his own things to worry about.
"Sure, mom. See ya."
With a sigh, Alex sat the phone on its receiver. "That could be a problem," he shivered.
"Dad came home?" The ferret guessed, shutting his phone and shuddering a little himself. He hadn't thought about the parent issue before, but now he realized that it could be a great problem. Though his own mother was very open to the idea of homosexuality (he brought home plenty of lezzie-friends), the wolf's father would just as soon disown a gay son as he would discard any other piece of worthless trash. It would be quite hard to hide the events of the night before, given the strong scent that still lingered in the air...
"Apparently. And apparently he's gone to a meeting. He'll be back though. Oh gods, I'll never hear the end," he began to panic, "He'll disown me! Or he'll make a spectacle. Or he'll keep it quiet and just beat me in solitude. Oh, gods!"
"Hey, calm down!" Brian cried, grabbing his hyperventilated friend's arm. "Maybe he stayed at a motel on the road or something."
"What?"
"Well," the ferret reasoned, "If he came in and smelled what you and I can clearly smell," he blushed, "then he would have immediately crashed into your room and demanded an explanation. He's not exactly a tactful wolf."
"I guess...you're right," Alex smiled. "He definitely wouldn't wait until morning."
"Good. His meeting won't be over for a while, yeah?" The ferret looked to the clock, noting how late the two had woken up. "Let's have that 11:00 breakfast now. We can freshen up the living room in no time."
The wolf smiled sheepishly, "I suppose so." He took his friend's hand and walked into the kitchen, seating him at the table in front of the cooling pancakes. "Eat up. It's not meat, but I figure if wolves can eat it, you'll eat it, too."
"Ooh, such an omnivore, you!" The ferret grinned, taking the fork that the wolf had laid out and sinking it into the pancake. He raised a chunk to eye-level and examined the dripping syrup with interest. By nature, he really was carnivorous. He ate the occasional green (to appease his mother and her silly healthy ways), but he only ate meat (and the occasional starchâ€"potatoes were surprisingly good for something that never squirmed) whenever he could help it.
Pancakes were a good alternative, of course. They were like candy...with some small health value! Brian ate the piece of pancake slowly, and followed up with the entire stack that was made for him. Alex was an exceptional cook, and he knew this well. He often found himself at this very table under similar breakfasting circumstances. Fortunately, the meal of choice was usually some delicious bit of fish or ham. Though the ferret had other ideas as to what needed to be eaten again at that time. He smiled suggestively at the wolf, who was now cleaning some of the pans he used to make the breakfast, trying to telepath the idea to his friend.
"So..." The wolf smiled as Brian brought his plate forward for cleaning.
"So it was amazing. I can't get over how you can make even disgustingly sweet things taste good."
"Oh, I have my way, I guess," he blushed, "But I was so-ing about...well."
"Us?" The ferret sighed, sitting back down at the table. He motioned for the wolf to join him and smiled, "Let's talk, then." He was trying to be the instigator hereâ€"the wolf wouldn't.
"Let's talk," the wolf smiled, "Okay let's talk. What..."
"What...?"
"Yes, what?"
"What are we going to do, you mean?" The ferret closed his eyes and concentrated. "I don't know. I guess I've never been in this situation before."
"How can you be so calm about this?" Alex frowned, "I mean..."
"Because...well...okay, look at it this way," Brian reasoned, "Why did you do what we did last night?"
The wolf flinched and blushed, bringing his head down some. "Well...I... I mean... I just... I felt..."
"Yeah?" The ferret smiled at the wolf's anxiety.
"I mean... I like..I realized thatâ€"" He searched for the words, found them, and said hurriedly, "I realized that I love you maybe...and..."
"You just realized it last night?" He challenged.
"Well...yeah! I mean...is that...bad?"
The ferret leaned over the table and took the wolf's hand, smiling sweetly at him. "Of course it's not bad, puppy. I think I realized that I loved you about the same time you realized it."
"Does it bother you?"
"Of course not," he smiled. "Because I figure that... well! There's no way that something that feels so natural, even if sudden, could be wrong. How can love be wrong, right?"
The wolf looked a bit reassured, putting his other paw on top of the ferret's. "I guess so. I'm... what will people say?"
"Have you really ever cared what others think?"
"Not really," Alex sighed, "But..."
"But your father."
"Exactly! You know as well as I do that he'llâ€""
"Disown you, yes."
The wolf looked angrily at his friend, "And this doesn't bother you?"
Brian looked affronted at that comment, but kept his hand where it was between the wolf's. "You think I'm not afraid that the man I love will get disowned because of me?"
"I'm...I mean," The wolf felt tears oncoming, and fought them back with a shudder, "I'm sorry... I guess I just can't accept this as well as you can."
"I guess it's the family differences," Brian smiled, petting the wolf's hand lovingly. "I know you aren't incredibly homophobic like your dad, but being raised around that can't have had a great effect on that part of your psyche."
"Now you're a psychiatrist?" The wolf smiled, his tears quickly fading. "A man of many talents!"
"You're so fortunate to have me!" The ferret winked, smiling widely.
"I really am." The wolf smiled, standing up slowly. The ferret met him halfway around the table and they embraced. "I really, really am."
"Hey, don't get serious on me or anything, puppy." Brian laughed.
"Everything's going to be all right, right? Everything will work out?"
"I'm a psychiatrist, not a psychic." The ferret grinned. He closed his eyes then, pulling the wolf's face up to meet his own in their first (But not last! Brian hoped...) act of passion of the day. The wolf's smooth tongue tasted just as good as it had the day before, the ferret noted (was that a hint of meat on his breath?! The bastard!). And his ass felt just as firm... and he was sure the rest would be the same as the night before, too.
"Yeah, though. Everything's going to be fine." He brought one of his hands to the front of his friend's boxersâ€"
The wolf pushed him away, though, and smiled up. "We've got to clean before we get dirty, right?"
The ferret pouted, "Do we have to?"â€"but he quickly got to work picking up the clothes from the evening before and throwing them into the wash. He looked at the shoes and jacket by the door and decided that they were clean enough to be left alone, but put them away in the closet for the moment anyway. Alex, meanwhile, sprayed air freshener and fabric freshener and every other freshener he could find into the living room to cover up any trace of the scents left on the room. All in all, Brian decided that the room actually smelled much less appealing with the orgy of lilacs, magnolias, and roses. Even Alex decided that the three incense burners were a little much, and finally put them out.
"That wasn't as much work as I had expected," Alex laughed, wrapping an arm around the ferret (who was still trying to get adjusted to the very poignant aroma).
"Think your dad will get suspicious with... y'know, the smell?"
"For all he knows, I'm covering up the smell after a hard day's workout."
"You work out?" The ferret teased, rubbing a hand across the wolf's firm stomach. "I hardly notice."
"Better than your lazy ass," Alex smiled, turning to pull the ferret into another kiss. Even he noticed a certain change in himself. Around the ferret, he lost most of the self-consciousness that plagued him around so many others.
The ferret found something amiss after they pulled out of their kiss, however. He smacked his lips dramatically and shook his head, eliciting a confused noise from the wolf. "What's wrong? Something in my teeth?" Alex frowned.
"No, your teeth are wonderful," Brian smiled seductively, "But..." He sniffed, "You're the only remnant of our little fun last night that hasn't been washed."
"Oh!" The wolf smiled. "Right! I'll go hop in the shower andâ€""
"Oh, what is this you nonsense?"
"Huh?" The wolf cocked his head, "Well I mean, I'm just going to get in the shower."
"You obviously can't remember to bathe in the first place! Why should I expect that you know how to bathe correctly?"
"Well, you can assume I do... and..." The wolf blushed, crossing his arms defensively and averting his eyes again. "You could just...go...and watch TV or..."
"Who do you think wears the pants in this relationship, Alex?" The ferret grinned, pushing his friend playfully. "Neither of us right now, but it's the principle of the matter."
"What relationship? Jumping to conclusions are we, Brian?" The wolf challenged, narrowing his eyes. "When did I agree to date you?"
The ferret was taken off-guard by this comment, an event that was happening more and more as Alex lost his self-consciousness. Drat. "What? I... I... I thought..."
Alex pulled the ferret into another quick kiss and smiled. "You know I was just joking."
"You scared me," The ferret breathed in a startled sort of way, yet he smiled. "You owe me, now."
"I guess. And you do need to clean again, after wearing my dirty boxers."
"I thought they were amazingly clean-smelling, actually."
The wolf gasped, "You smelled them?"
"What? Your musk is nice." The ferret frowned a little ashamedly.
He was met with the wolf's mouth and a smile for the third time. "I thought I was the only weird one."
They walked upstairs and into the small bathroom, neither's hands leaving the other's body. Alex smiled and said, "Run the water and I'll be back with a change of clothes."
As the wolf left, the ferret mumbled to himself, "Nobody said anything about clothes." He turned on the water to a favorable temperature and stripped himself of the boxers. He looked down to find himself eye to ‘eye' with his own length. With all of the groping, he had hardly noticed his own incredible horniness. "Hurry up, Alex," he sighed, sitting on the sink. "Wasting water."
The wolf was quickly back and carrying two changes of clothes. To Brian's surprise (and pleasure), the wolf obviously found himself in the ferret's position: naked and in need of some attention.
After setting the clothes down, Alex dragged his friend quickly into the heat of the small shower, and found his hands wandering, the heat of his actions increasing with the heat of his body. The ferret returned his heated actions with as much, if not more, passion. They kissed again and again, each time growing closer to the other. Once or twice they felt their members touch, but the sensations it sent only barely registered with the hormone-wracked minds.
Alex reached absentmindedly for the soap bottle, squeezing it copiously over their bodies so that their exploring hands would spread cleanliness as well as passion. Brian obviously had a dirtier mindset, as he closed what gap there was between their two bodies and stroked both of their wanting members with one hand. Both gasped, both moaned, and both doubled their output to double the pleasure of the other. With hormones raging and adrenaline pulsing, it was not long before the inevitable came to pass.
"Bâ€"Brian...might want to slow down..." The wolf breathed. "If...you don't mind..."
"I do." The ferret smiled heatedly, stroking even more fiercely.
They came together, or very close to it. It was hard for Brian to decide just by the tenseness of their bodies. Even with the heated water flowing around them, though, they both felt as each other's warm and sticky seed coated their stomachs.
After a few moments of panting, the ferret grinned in a way that gave away the cliché that he would certainly use any moment. "I guessâ€""
"We'll have to get clean again," The wolf groaned, returning his friend's grin.
"Pff," Brian rolled his eyes, "See if I ever grace you with my excellent comedic genius again."
They washed each other for a second time, more thoroughly, and with much groping finished their shower and got dressed. After a little arguing about the wolf's hideous choice of clothes ("Listen, we're not going anywhere!"), the two settled down on the big couch for a few hours of relaxing movies, relaxing cuddling, and a bit of relaxing kissing.
And pass the hours did. The next time either of them cared to look at the clock it was well past 4:30 P.M., and they decided pizza would be a good idea for dinner.
As they watched some ‘nonsense,' as Brian called it (a criminal justice show, which Alex was fascinated with), their hands never left each others'. They fell into conversation during the boring parts, which again only turned into more hormone-aided kissing.
"Lucky your dad hasn't walked in with all of your passes at me," The ferret joked as they pulled away for what must have been the hundredth time during the sitting.
"We're making up for lost time," Alex smiled, leaning in to draw his tongue across the ferret's neck. "It is weird that he isn't back. What kind of meeting did he go to, you think?"
Brian stood up while taking out his wallet in answer to the sharp ring of the doorbell. "Who knows? Maybe he already went to get your mom. Pizza's here!"
He opened the door brandishing a crisp bill, but withdrew it as he saw the man at the front door. The cougar looked up at him from behind a pair of small, square glasses, and shifted his hands uneasily in the pockets of his long, black coat.
"Excuse me for bothering you, kid. Someone told me that you could identify this man." He spoke with a deep, cool tone that was uncommon for a cougar. And for someone with glasses. What a weirdo, Brian thought. He looked at the picture and tilted his head. It wasn't a great photo, but it did look familiar. He couldn't recognize the background, but the person...
"Isn't this your dad, Alex?" The ferret cried, grabbing and waving the photo.
"Huh? Looks like him from here, I'll come get a better look." The wolf had an uneasy look on his face as he approached the cougar, but quickly turned as the phone rang. "Damnit, just a second."
As Alex went to answer the phone, Brian turned back to the cougar. "What's this about? He rob a bank or something?"
The cougar frowned at the ferret's joke and spoke frankly. "No, kid. This man has been in a pretty bad traffic accident and is on life support at the hospital. His ID couldn't be found in the wreckage, so we've been everywhere looking for his family. Someone directed us here. Frankly, they should just come say goodbye. I don't think it looks good."
Brian's heart sank, and he felt sudden regret at making any sort of comment about the wolf. He turned toward the younger wolf, who had missed out on the cougar's words, and his eyes began to water at the sudden news. Alex made eye contact and gave him a confused look, but was too busy on the phone to ask what was the matter.
And as an unaware little lizard girl made her way to the door brandishing a heated box of pizza, the unaware wolf spoke to his unaware mother words that caused the more aware ferret to drop his head in silence and even the frank cougar to frown in a sort of sympathy.
"No, mom. I haven't heard from him. I'm sure he's fineâ€"his meeting's just lasted a little longer than it should have."
But those selfish thoughts were present ever through their grieving. Those thoughts of happiness beyond tragedy and of happiness because of it. But could such wicked thoughtsâ€"thoughts of benefiting a relationship from a lossâ€"could they truly ever be...happy? And with such selfish thoughts, could they, those in such a relationship, be happy? Certainly so! Or certainly he hoped. Certainly I do.
