Kate and the Monsters, P6: The Taking of Kate
Kate thought the humans of Newkome village might never speak to her again, her monstrous self made forever a pariah. Until a human steals her from the monsters…
Carl looked around the boggy forest. Terrified but determined, he walked with purpose between beasts both hulking and tiny. Most were dozing, some chattering to each other in their impenetrable language, others doing… unseemly things… and some were watching him, or pretending not to.
He had followed one of those little flapping horrors that he had seen Kate with, those things that another villager said was responsible for her transformation. The little beast looked back at him periodically and led him through the trees. Carl had no idea why it was letting him go with it. Probably luring him into a trap, though he was already well within the monsters' clutches. Heck, the whole village was at the mercy of the monsters every night.
Carl's boot sank into mud and he yanked it back out, swallowing a curse. He was at the bank of a large pond. Then he saw an orange and green shape laying motionlessly atop a big log near the edge. He recognised the patterning from what he saw from his window last night.
Oh god Kate, what have they done to you?
Carl waded in to the pond. He stood, waist deep in the brackish water over the creature's still form.
Was she even alive?
He tentatively reached a hand out and touched Kate's shoulder blade, just above her limp wings. She was cold and clammy.
“I…" he murmured.
I have to do something.
He reached out and, grunting with effort, lifted the big imp up off the log.
Quite used to being manhandled by now, Kate sleepily ignored the hands reaching around her. Whatever was doing it was lovely and warm. She groaned sumptuously in a way which made Carl shudder, and drifted off again.
Carl realised the log that Kate was on had teeth. Lots of them. And claws. Kate seemed to be stuck on it somehow. He tugged her upwards and was rewarded with a filthy, slippery noise and the musk of inhuman sex. He had just pulled her up off the beast's penis, and he could see his semen running out of her slit and down her legs and tail.
The human bit down on a horrified gasp and stood silently, waiting for the crocodilian monster to wake up and disembowel him. When that didn't happen, he gratefully plodded backwards and clumsily exited the pond. As he walked away with the imp matriarch cradled in his arms the croc monster opened an eye and curiously watched him disappear into the woods.
Kate felt herself laying on something… fabricy and soft. Or maybe she was dreaming that?
Then she heard an engine kick into life and felt the sudden jar of movement, and she woke with a start.
Kate opened an eye. Her vision was filled with a human's jeans-clad ass - Amy's. Her head was laying down on the car seat right next to the girl's sitting form. Not really sure what to say, Kate quickly closed her eye again and pretended to be asleep.
“You said you were just going to _speak_ to her!" said Amy, frantically.
“She's so cold, and soaked, I think she's dying!" said the voice of Carl.
“She's an amphibian! I think…"
Kate felt Amy's warm hand caress softly and pleasantly over her long neck. In one of her mind's eyes, an imp sitting on the shoulder of Lacu watched the 4x4 speed bumpily away, then focused on the triceratops' bemused face.
“You didn't stop him?" asked Lacu to the crocodile monster.
“I… thought he was just going to mate with her. He just… stole her? Makes no sense!"
“This has gone on for long enough," Lacu said sternly, and he started to lumber in pursuit on all fours, joined by several other monsters - then by several more.
Kate returned her attention to her own body back in the car as she heard, “You took her from them! They'll kill us!"
That was Amy. “Where the hell can we go?"
“Back to Newkome?" replied Carl, uncertainly.
The vehicle's movement became smooth as it left the forest and joined the road.
“Ummm," said Kate hesitantly, flicking her eyes open. The off-roader swerved.
The two humans goggled at her, Carl from the rear-view mirror, Amy from up above.
“Are you… okay?" asked Amy as Kate pulled herself into a sitting position. “I saw what they did to you last night…"
Kate flushed with embarrassment. She looked for something to say.
“I'm… not sure she understands us," said Amy, uncertainly, looking at the monster with deep concern.
“That big bastard broke her," growled Carl. “The way she acted on him, he broke her mind!"
Kate went an even deeper beetroot. She curled her wings around her body and squealed in shame.
“We'll bring you back, somehow," said Amy, resting a hand on her tail, nearly in tears.
“Guys, I'm fine!" said the voice of Kate from within the green, membranous cocoon of her wings. “I let him do it, it was really fucking goooood!"
The car fell silent. Tucked up in the moist darkness, Kate looked through the eyes of her imps. They were all in flight, and closing in on her location. Far from concerned, they were intrigued, amused, and feeling second-hand the shame that Kate was emanating. But the literal horde of monsters closing in on the off-roader were not as chill, at all. Despite the car going near seventy miles an hour, the lankier, taller and flying ones were gaining. Lacu was among them, his scaly muscles rippling as he galloped, his body reshaped and optimised for speed.
I think you should let me out," said Kate, peeping out from between her wings.
“I… don't dare to stop," replied Carl, panicking.
The car sped into Newkome. Humans looked at the tide of monsters in pursuit, screamed and ran for their houses. The creatures paid them no heed.
The car slowed just enough to navigate the twisting village roads. As things leapt across the rooftops and darted along the roads in hot pursuit, the off-roader scraped against a van, lost a wing mirror to a brick wall and careened into the village green, where Kate had met Lacu.
There was a mass of people waiting there. Over two hundred humans, people she knew personally, and their adult family members. Holding sticks, forks, crowbars, whatever hefty things they could pick up and swing.
“An actual, real angry mob!" Kate said in awe and rising panic.
I'm a monster, and I'm going into a real angry mob!
The off-roader carved grassy mud out of the field as it skidded to a stop in the center of the square, amidst the crowd of villagers.
The monsters swarmed to the edge of the green. Kate looked out of the window and saw, glumly and without too much surprise, that the mob was not running away. Men in work gear, women with nails that Kate had manicured only recently, old age pensioners, all tooled up for a fight they wouldn't stand the slightest chance of winning.
Carl got out of the car while Amy stayed in with Kate, hand clenched around flipper. Parker (dad of Janice who's the chatty one in the bakery and getting married this month) had become impromptu leader of the humans, and looked from the man to the assorted beasts haunting the opposite side of the square - creatures that had kept them locked in their houses night after night.
“Did you talk to Kate?" asked Parker, firmly but calmly. Carl motioned to the car, and the salamander creature within. Parker looked through the window and his eyes widened as he saw Kate's frightened, wide eyed face. He gripped his antique cavalry sword a little tighter.
Lacu thundered into the area, his claws leaving dents in the tarmac, then churning up sods of grass as he entered the field. He slowed, threaded himself carefully through the mass of fanged, furred and scaled bodies, and strode to just within threatening distance. His body effortlessly reshaped from streamlined and fast to massive and hulking. He returned to looking as terrifying as ever, looming over all but the tallest beasts.
“You…" said Carl, furiously to the triceratops thing. “You did…"
He was unsure what to say.
You turned one of us, our Kate, into a monster and paraded around with her mounted on you like some kind of fuck toy, humiliating us all. Only… Kate said she already _was_ a monster and she's fine and wanted it and enjoyed it, and she's as much one of you as one of us…
Lacu, not understanding the human's language anyway, sat down cross legged and looked serenely at Carl, his head still slightly above the human's. He showed all the confidence a giant, armour plated behemoth would tend to have.
Parker drew alongside Carl, just a few paces from the towering monster.
“You're not stealing her back," he said, menacingly.
Lacu looked confused. An older monster whispered a translation into his ear. Lacu looked even more confused. The mob milled around and murmured angrily, while the horde of monsters on the other side growled, grumbled and squirmed.
Kate pensively opened the car door and hauled herself out. She looked at Carl, Parker and the humans.
“You… did all this to rescue me?" she asked.
Parker nodded.
“You're one of us."
Carl trembled, and opened his mouth as if to say something, before closing it and nodding too.
Kate stood there silently. Then started to sob. Amy patted her shoulder.
“You… s-still want me? But I'm a m-mmm…"
The mob shifted awkwardly. Kate began to wail, and tears streamed down the sides of her snout. She dived at Carl and hugged him with both arms and wings.
“Ahhh!" he managed as the imp matriarch's slimy body wrapped him up, and her six breasts squeezed against his front, through his coat.
“Well, I-“ began Parker, then an imp lunged at him and grabbed his chest with all its limbs. He shrieked, raised his sword, then realised the little monster was blubbering just like Kate.
Seven more imps accosted the human mass, arms and legs out, desperate for consolation. Volunteers and victims were picked and got to hug the slimy, naked, sobbing things.
The monsters watched on, myriad eyes fastened to the humans and their antics. Most couldn't fathom why they had tried to take Kate away from them, or why she was crying.
But all the humans had done was take her back to the village. Their village, as much as it was the humans'. She was safe.
“A real, proper angry mob," said Lacu with a whimsical smile as he got back to his feet. “Isn't that quite the thing."
He returned to the horde and they quietly slinked, slithered and flapped away, leaving the humans with their rescued, monstrous damsel.
“Well, they were happy they rescued Matriarch, I mean Kate," said Raspberry the imp, “but at the end of the day, what could they do? She's a chimera _and_ an imp queen, and they're both considered too dangerous to live among the humans. Like, they trust Kate not to hurt them on purpose, but there's always, well, accidents..."
The human boy she was talking to wondered how on Earth a human sized, winged newt could be all that dangerous. Then said, “So what did they do?"
Raspberry shrugged. “They brought her to the cafe and got her and us imps some cake and pots of tea. And you know the rest. Kate and us lot are now go-betweens. Monster representatives to the humans."
“Spokesmonsters?"
Raspberry grinned. “I like that!"
It was approaching midnight, two nights after the villagers got Kate back. Raspberry was at Louie's bedside, babysitting him. Well, not really. No human in their right mind would appoint a monster to look after a human child, not even one of Kate's imps. But Louie's mother had left it too late getting back from a friend's, and curfew meant no-one could come over to look after him, and the monster noises outside sometimes made him terribly upset, so… Raspberry was just being there, keeping the boy company in an unofficial capacity.
“Why are you all girls?" asked Louie. “You were all boys yesterday."
Raspberry laughed.
“People thought it was weird that we were all males with Kate's memories and personality, so we all changed to girls. Then the humans started coming up with names for us, and made us dresses so we aren't going 'round in the nud."
Raspberry adjusted her miniature crimson skirt, flicked out a red leg and wiggled the flipper at the end of it. The villagers named her after her slight scarlet hue, so she made herself an even bolder red. All the imps got named after things humans ate, and they all changed their colours appropriately.
There was a low, menacing, grumbling growl from outside. Louie, wide-eyed, started to shiver. Raspberry flapped over on light red wings, and placed a reassuring, if clammy, hand on the bulge of his shoulder through the bed covers.
“That was Tromb. He's a bugbear. He's probably raiding your bird feeder."
Louie stared at the imp.
“What?"
Raspberry established a psychic connection with Choc-chip, who was patrolling the village overhead. The brown speckled imp dived down and landed on Tromb's head to converse with him.
Louie and his not-babysitter heard the angry, threatening, rumbling growl again.
“Tromb asks you to put out the sunflower ones, he likes them more."
Louie started to laugh. The man-eating beast in his mind was transformed into a thief of seed balls.
“Tell me more about the monsters!"
Raspberry prattled on for half an hour, describing the creatures that haunted the village. She turned lurking horrors into quirky people with their own strange lives and odd habits. She described how they were there to protect the humans from harm, in exchange for the things they grew and the delicious pests they attracted.
Eventually Raspberry realised the boy had gone to sleep. She quietly congratulated herself for her human rearing skills, returned to the windowsill, curled up and closed her eyes.
Choc Chip let Raspberry know that the thief of seed balls had just bitten the leg off a bandersnatch. The red imp wisely kept that information to herself, and dozed off.
