Flamedramon's Return Ch.1 (Reunion)
5 years after the group saved the digital world, Davis has begun to reminisce about his friends, and Veemon.
Wanting to see him again more than anything, things will begin to go down a road he never expected.
“It's been a long while since I've seen Veemon."
I was holding up a framed photo of me and the gang back when we had just finished our time in the digital world. My eyes were drawn to Kari, who from what I recall had finally made a move on T.K.
“About time…" I began to muse how it took them so long to finally get together.
I had always had a soft spot for Kari, however I eventually realized I wasn't really interested in her. After all the time I spent fawning over her, it felt strange coming to the realization I liked other guys.
How long has it been? I finally turn 16 only to remember I haven't kept in contact with any of my friends except Kari, and now occasionally T.K. since, you know. I used to text Veemon through my phone, which was always a very weird concept. Did they even have phones that could text in the digital world?
“Uh…" I was drifting into that weird territory, nevertheless, I had been unable to keep up with Veemon as well for some time. School had become so busy and as much as it pained me, education came first.
Though I really did miss him, and the others as well.
I had an exam today, the end of my finals had approached and I knew I should do a little studying instead of reminiscing over the past. I placed the frame back down on my somewhat cluttered desk. I used to be very slobby considering I was so focused on sports, but I feel I've become more organised. I paused, wondering if it had to be due to the whole stereotype of gays being hygienic.
Suddenly there was a knock on my door.
“Davis? Your mother let me in." It was Kari, probably here to drag me out of my house in search of food or a place to study before the finals, or both.
“Ah, hey. So what's the plan, I was just going to grab a bite before we head out." I noticed T.K. wasn't loafting behind her.
“I think go sit in the library near the new sushi place that opened up, T.K. said he'll meet up after the exams, so it'll just be us most of the day." She motioned with her hand in a sort of irritated manner, and then her gaze drifted to the framed photo sitting on my desk.
I quickly moved sideways just enough to block the photo, I didn't want her thinking I'd gone soft all of a sudden. Although I kind of wished she would push to bring up why I still had a picture of us all hanging around in my room in plain sight.
“Well anyway, are you okay to go now? It may be better if you wait to eat since I hear the new place is full of great stuff, and they might be serving brunch today too!" She said with a rather obvious fondness.
“Yeah, yeah, I'm all good. Let's go." I quickly grabbed my books and shoved them in a backpack. As I lifted up my bag however, one of them fell out near the leg of my bed.
“Ugh, really?" I bent over in an awkward pose to grab it, which brought on a stifled laugh from Kari.
But as I started to pull up, unknowingly, my phone slid out of my pocket, landing on the floor in such a way that it didn't make enough sound for either of us to notice.
“Ready…" I said, zipping up my bag as we began to head for the front door.
As I walked through the hall, I could have sworn I heard some kind of ringing come from my room.
"How many times do I have to tell you?!" Kari yelled loudly.
We had met up with T.K. after finishing up our exam, and decided to head over to Tai's new place. I hadn't seen Tai for most of my time in high school, and thought this would be a good time as any to drop in and say hello. Of course, T.K. loved to tease Kari and her brother, which was what was currently putting her in such a foul mood. I think he mentioned something about how she has been eating too much, which was true really.
"Look, I'm just saying that if you want to be able to get through doorways, you're gonna need to cu-"
"I don't care! Just because I eat more than you guys doesn't give you an excuse to call me out in front of our waiter T.K.!"
I had been zoning in on and off, but I was really glad I had came in right then and there. Normally their arguments are really heated over mundane things, but this was actually pretty juicy if I could be honest.
"You guys, you shouldn't argue about this." I had hoped to at least calm Kari down, but knowing T.K. it wasn't going to stop.
"Well, maybe it wouldn't be a problem if Kari wasn't snarfing all the appetizers every time we go somewhere."
I've never been very good at defusing these two, but I find that as long as I'm tenacious it ends. Eventually.
"Whatever, we're almost at my brothers apartment anyway. Can't believe I fell for you, seriously." Kari said while muffling her voice.
"Oh, I'm sure we both know what you really stuck around for Kari." T.K. said as he gave Kari a quick look over and leered.
Kari immediately punched him in the arm, "Not in front of Davis please, and don't say that stuff in front of Tai."
Tai, being a brother was quite protective of Kari, but he knew to give her space. It helped that T.K. was brothers with his best friend, and T.K. was genuinely a nice guy, he was just one of those people that just loved to stir shit before it hit the fan.
We arrived at Tai's doorstep and rang the bell, a shuffle was heard behind the door and then his head popped out. Quickly motioning for us to come in, we took our shoes off, and followed him into the living room. He had bought new furniture and appliances to freshen up the place as well as celebrate his recent move. A big TV was mounted on the wall showing some soccer playing, I wasn't surprised.
"Make yourselves comfortable, and drinks are in the fridge, feel free to help yourself." Tai stated casually.
The thing about Tai was that he was always so calm and rather open, whether it was in what he would say or considering his belongings, he would always share without a second thought. I was glad that hadn't changed.
"I need to head out and grab a few things for dinner, need some help, T.K.?" He was giving T.K. a stern look.
"Fine, fine. Whatever." T.K. slowly forced his body to move and follow Tai to the door.
"We'll be back in a few." Tai waved to me and his sister as we began to sit on his couch.
"Okay, don't take too long Tai!" Kari motioned gently, she was always very fond of her brother.
After a minute, I shifted my position to face Kari enough that we could start a decent conversation. I wasn't really sure if there was a good way to bring it up but I ended up saying fuck it, and just told her the truth.
"So, I miss Veemon. As well as the others, I've started thinking about them recently."
Kari just had this look on her face, kind of like she noticed I was being real about what I said but she also saw the deep blush I had forming on my face. I started fidgeting a bit, knowing she didn't really know how to respond, so I decided to talk.
"Have you heard from them at all, Gatoman too?" I immediately hoped she hadn't. Part of me had hoped that the rest of my group had been as absent from each others lives as I had been, only because I knew I had been a shitty friend, but still, they could have reached out too.
"I haven't heard from the others, but Gatoman messaged me a few days ago about all the digimon wanting to come visit soon."
Really? Veemon would be coming to see me? I couldn't believe how the timing was so coincidental.
"That's... that's great news!" I couldn't have seemed more giddy, in fact Kari looked like she was just about to mention it.
"Do you know when they were coming exactly? Did they say?"
Kari suddenly jolted when she felt her phone ringing, she pulled it out of her pocket and made a face that seemed to be both happy and surprised.
"Er..." She glanced up at Davis, "Now?"
Now? What did she mean now? As if to clear up his confusion, Kari's phone began to emit a soft glow, and with it, strange light flooded the room. Davis and Kari had to close their eyes, and that's when suddenly Davis heard a loud thump, and then something akin to glass breaking. As soon as the light was gone, they hastily opened their eyes, and saw that Gatomon had popped into the room, gracefully landing onto the new table Tai had purchased.
"Hello!" Gatoman said with a warm smile, and then proceeded to crawl out of the table and rest on the couch.
"You always know how to make an entrance, Gatoman. I'm not sure how I'm going to explain this to my brother though." Kari said with her head hung low, as she began to head to the cupboards for a dustpan to remove all the sharp glass.
"Sorry... So where's Veemon? He said he would be here waiting for me." Gatoman asked looking concerned.
What? Veemon was supposed to be here already? But I would've noticed my phone doing... Whatever that was. I quickly reached into my pocket and it dawned on me that my phone wasn't where it should be. Shit, did I lose it on the way here, or...
"I need to go home." I practically yelled, causing Gatoman and Kari stare at me.
"What's wrong, Davis?"
"I... I think I lost my phone. I need to go retrace my steps, sorry!" I went to the front door and began sliding my shoes on.
"Okay, I hope you find it, and Veemon, he would've been able to enter the human world the same way I did. So don't be surprised if you catch him sleeping by your phone!" Gatoman said while eyeing some of the glass covering the table she smashed.
I rushed out the door and started running as fast as I could, it was already dark and I knew that Veemon was probably bored or asleep. Shit, to think I could mess up an opportunity like this. As I made my way back to my house, all I could think of was seeing him, after all this time.
I stormed up the steps to my apartment, sweaty and exhausted.
I began to reach for the door handle when I suddenly couldn't move, I was frozen there, caught up in my own thoughts. I realized that Veemon would be behind that door, and I hadn't spoken to him for what, almost a year? I had to think of something to say.
"Maybe I should just..." I said out loud as my mind trailed off. Maybe I should just play it off, but what if he expects an apology?
I slowly turned the door handle, and pushed the door open, which in turn made a sound that I was sure would alert anyone not asleep by now. I walked inside fumbling to get my shoes off in the dark, and walked towards the kitchen area, expecting Veemon to be either there, or well, sleeping.
As I turned the corner, I saw the fridge door close, and with a loud thud, suddenly in view was a tall blue dragon. It was Flamedramon.
All at once my feelings came to a boil, and I couldn't believe what I was seeing before my eyes. Flamedramon turned his head and our eyes met, those deep crimson eyes lit up and I felt as if he wasn't looking at me, but through me. As I kept staring at him, for what felt like forever, I noticed we were practically the same height now, which was to be expected. He also wasn't wearing his armor, which I understood, I mean why wear that all the time if you aren't even fighting. That's when it hit me. My eyes began to drift downward, breaking the eye contact, and all I saw was him holding a bag of milk and a carton of eggs. I wasn't sure if my hunch was right or not, but I ended up blurting out what came to mind.
"You're not... planning on cooking are you?" I said as I glanced over to the counter, eyeing a cookbook my mother had purchased recently.
Flamedramon began to blush, a purplish pink spread on his face gradually, and he looked like he had been caught doing something... dirty.
"I... I wanted to bake a cake. To surprise you." He looked down at the ingredients he was holding, and let out a sound, almost like a whimper.
"Flamedramon..." I knew why he was trying to do this, I messed up our reunion, and he wanted to do something to cheer me up.
He walked to the counter and put down the eggs, and the milk. He looked down, as if he wasn't sure what to say to me. I knew that if I didn't do something to fix this now, the visit would become too uncomfortable for him. So I did the first thing that crossed my mind. Slowly making my way up to him, I leaned in and began to wrap my arms around him.
"Ah, Davis?" Flamedramon had turned a shade of pink I hadn't seen him wear before. I rested my chin on his shoulder and hugged him tightly. I wasn't sure if he was okay with this, but I didn't mean for the hug to be sexual or anything.
"I'm really sorry. I haven't been around for you, or the others for some time now. I'm glad you came." I said in an almost hushed tone.
"Oh... it's fine... I wasn't upset at you. I'm glad to be here." Flamedramon quickly returned the hug, then suddenly shifted, causing us to move apart,
"Were you okay while I was out, I didn't realize you'd be here today. I dropped my phone somewhere earlier and learned of you from Gatoman."
Flamedramon immediately had a grin spreading on his face, maybe because he realized I hadn't changed as much since before. I was still a klutz.
"Hah! I figured you didn't know! Your phone is beside your bed." He had this weird look in his eye as he said that, but I couldn't read what it was.
"Oh, thank God. I hope you didn't break anything when you came here. Gatoman smashed into a table." He looked rather amused at that.
"Oh... no... I was rather graceful coming through. But I did end up finding your stash..." Flamedramon had that look in his eye again.
Then it made sense, and I knew why he was giving me that look. He found my porn. Great.
I leaned forward, my face inches away from his, and I forced a big perverted smile.
"You didn't peruse my wares while I wasn't here, did you?" I had hoped to elicit some embarrassment, after all, he wasn't gay. As far as I knew.
Flamedramon's eyes strained for a moment, and he let out a small groan, which caught me off guard. What kind of reaction was that? He quickly caught himself, shifted his weight and grabbed the milk and eggs, moving for the fridge.
"I didn't invade your privacy. At least not that far." He hesitantly began to put the things he took out away, looking disappointed.
As I was watching him, and wondering why he was acting a little strange, it hit me that he was in his Flamedramon form.
"Hey, um, Flamedramon? Why are you in this form, I expected you to be Veemon."
Flamedramon turned around with a pouty look on his face, clearly upset at that.
"Well, because your home is cold. I don't know how you can live in this place." He sauntered over to me and leaned in close.
I wasn't sure what it was, but something turned that pout into a sly grin, which was honestly quite adorable if I may say.
"Which brings me to this, Davis..." Flamedramon edged just close enough for me to feel his breath.
"W-what?" I couldn't stand it anymore, what was going on with him?
Silence hung in the air, but he finally sliced through it.
"If I'm going to stay here with you for awhile... I'm afraid we'll need to start sleeping together."
