I really love fairy tales. Those short gems of prose that make us think of heroes and heroines, of mythical monsters, or magic in moonlight. There is nothing quite like them, and I've read every single one I can get my hands on. I know "The Christmas Fox" may not be the most original fairy tale you've ever read, but take it from me, during this time of year, I think you can agree it's worth the perusal. *^^*

Darren is a sad, lonely man, and this close to Christmas is a terrible time to feel that way. His love for the animals of all shapes and sizes that visit him from a nearby forest keep him going these days. But he's about to meet a very special fox... <3

Once upon a time, a young man named Darren lived in a cozy house not far from a large forest. Every day, like the furry he professed himself to be, he would be thrilled with the abundance of different animals that would stop by his lawn for a visit. Sometimes deer would come to graze from the long stems of healthy green grass or the nearby short, squat spruce trees. As December came, rabbits and squirrels would scurry about, gathering nuts and seeds, and still other creatures like red robins and wrens would swoop down and pick up a worm or two, or collect an assortment of scattered twigs for winter nests.

One day, so enraptured was he in observing some playful deer chasing one another back and forth that he forgot about a Christmas shopping date he’d promised to keep with his girlfriend, Belinda. It wasn’t until his cellphone rang hours later that an exceedingly angry voice told him that whatever relationship they had convinced themselves was real was finally over.

“Go and stay with your animals!” she had growled, and then hung up without another word.

Darren was sad. He felt terrible that he had allowed his love of animals to supersede his own social life, and vowed that should he meet another lover, her pleasure and attention would always come first. For a few days, until the middle of December, Darren mostly stayed in his warm house, looked at the presents he’d gotten for Belinda now scattered beneath the Christmas tree, and moped. But every so often, he would sneak a peek at the lawn through the curtains and witness a few animals running about before the cold wind and blowing snow.

A few days before Christmas, thick snow blanketed the entire lawn, nearly a foot deep. Darren was just dressing to go outside to start shoveling his walkway, when he noticed something strange on the lawn that he had never seen before.

“What is that?” he whispered, and hurriedly put on his gloves and boots before walking outside to get a closer look.

As he got outside and the bitter cold hit him, his blue eyes peered through the blinding snow and saw a fox. But it wasn’t like any fox he’d seen before. Instead of the familiar reds, browns, and russets of normal foxes, this one was pure white, nearly impossible to see against the snowy background and lawn it stood upon.

“Well, hello there, fella. What are you doing out here?” He crept towards it curiously, putting out a hand. “Wow, you’re an Arctic fox, aren’t you? You’re pretty far from home.”

To his surprise, the fox sat up on its haunches, rubbed its paws together, and washed its face. It didn’t bound away, nor did it seem to pay the slightest bit of interest to Darren. It just sat in the snow and bathed itself, starting with a whisker-brush, a tummy rub, and finally giving attention to its lush tail, licking each mat of fur until it looked, it its own opinion, presentable.

Darren laughed and knelt down in the snow, continuing to marvel at the white fox. For an animal to bathe itself in front of humans usually meant it trusted its surroundings implicitly. He tried speaking to it again, keeping his hand out. “Probably used to the cold, I bet. Wish I was.” The fox suddenly turned to look directly at him, and Darren noticed for the first time the slight curves of the muzzle, the pointed ears, and rather expressive ice-blue eyes. He also noticed tell-tale bumps along her torso area, and he grinned. “Well, I guess you’re a vixen, huh? Congratulations, you’re the first girl I’ve admired since my break-up weeks ago.” He remembered he always kept unshelled peanuts in his coat pocket and took a small handful out. “Here you go, girl. Would you like some…whoa…”

The white fox stepped daintily, without bounding, through the snow and directly towards him, sat down a few feet away, sniffing the air, then darted her muzzle forward questionably, eating the peanuts from his hand with care. Darren was now stunned. Arctic foxes generally weren’t this tame. Maybe she had been someone’s pet, or escaped from the local zoo. He shivered as the bitter cold wind swept across the lawn, sending drifts of swirling snow around his face again. Pet or not, the fox needed to be someplace safe, at least until he could contact the zoo, or design “Lost Fox” flyers.

“Hey, girl,” Darren slowly got to his feet and made a small trail of peanuts as he walked away and back towards the house. “Want to come inside where it’s warm? I’ll get you some more food too.”

The fox came down from her haunches and trotted through the snow, following the man as he opened the front door – then was again stunned as the vixen hopped up the steps and darted inside. “Damn. You’re sure forward!” He laughed and followed the girl fox inside. She took a moment to sniff her surroundings, then found a comfy throw rug near the open fireplace and curled up into a ball with her head on her tail, looking content and happy.

Darren walked up close to the fox and she immediately lifted her head. Her whiskers twitched and he was worried she was perhaps ready to bolt. But instead, she watched the man approach her calmly, and then as he got close enough to touch her, she raised her muzzle and tapped his fingers with her nose.

Darren laughed like a little boy and stroked her nose, and then along her muzzle, and head and ears, and finally along her beautiful white coat and lush tail. All the while, the fox watched him, murring softly, almost as if she were enjoying every touch. “Damn…I really want to keep you,” he whispered, continuing to caress her fur, “I hope no one claims you. Um…” He looked into her eyes again, crystal blue pools of delight, and then grinned. “Azure. That’s the perfect name for you. Azure.”

The fox’s eyes widened and her fox-tail thumped a few times on the rug, then she got up and amazingly hopped into Darren’s lap to curl up again, murring even louder.

“Okay, okay!” Darren giggled, stroking her head. “Azure it is.”

He waited for her to fall asleep before delicately removing her from his lap and settling her next to the fire to snooze while he made dinner.

**

The next few days were about the happiest Darren had even known. Azure took to his house immediately, sticking her muzzle into every nook and cranny and corner, even once surprising the man in the bathroom while he was taking a bath. Azure was sitting on her haunches and watching him bathe for a while, then had edged closer to the tub and, before Darren knew it, hopped into the warm, lathery water with him and snuggled in his arms. Because he was naked, he was really uncomfortable with the fox’s lush fur against his bare skin, but when she murred at him and settled in his lap again, he couldn’t help but feel a little warm inside.

Soon it was a few days before Christmas, and there had been no phone calls responding to his “Lost Fox” flyers, and the local zoo had already called him back to tell him they weren’t missing an Arctic fox, and in fact didn’t have an exhibit for them yet.

Darren sat with Azure in his lap, and looked sadly at the small group of wrapped presents under his tree, whom he’d originally gotten for Belinda, his ex-girlfriend. He stroked her ears and sighed. “I guess no one wants either one of us for the holidays, huh Azure?” He slowly grinned, “But…the good news is, no one’s come forth to say you belong to anyone so…maybe you’d like to stay here permanently?” Then he frowned. “But no…I…I can’t do that.” He looked deeply into her eyes. “You shouldn’t be someone’s pet, little girl. You should be out in the forest, meeting other foxes, maybe your true love, and settling down and having beautiful kits…”

Azure murrred loudly at him and licked his hand.

“Exactly. You don’t want me. I’m a total loser. I mean, I spend most of my time watching animals like you, and admiring them in the wild, and…” He blushed a bit. “I’m, um, I’m what you’d call a furry. I really love animals, every single one of them, and respect them, and…” His voice faltered a bit. “I…s-sometimes see art of them, well, a LOT of art of them, usually in some kind of, well, let’s just say non-animal situations.”

Azure seemed to smile, as if she understood every word he said.

“I mean, I don’t, like, get off on it or anything, but…you have to admit, seeing animals like you, pretty foxes with gorgeous legs, and figures, and pert breasts, I guess it’s a little hard not to be even slightly attracted to them-hey!” He laughed as Azure’s muzzle poked playfully at his groin and started licking his growing erection through his pants. “Okay, okay!” He laughed, pushing her muzzle away, “Me and my big mouth.”

The phone rang just then and Darren carefully removed Azure from his lap to answer it. It was the local zoo. They wanted to know if he still had the fox, and that they had talked to their staff and were interested in her after all, as they wanted to arrange for another Arctic fox to be brought in as a new exhibit for the winter. She would have a very good home, and lots of companionship, and the best fox food in the world, and Darren could come see her anytime he wanted with a free lifetime membership. And the best part was, when she was ready to be taken back into the wild, she could stay in the forest near his house, and she could visit him again and again.

As he hung up the phone, he looked over at Azure, who was watching him curiously, and smiled. “Well, Azure,” he said softly, “Looks like I found you a new home, girl.”

**

The zookeepers were thrilled with the new addition to their Fox Exhibit, and when they heard that her name was Azure, they loved it and started right away making signs and plaques for her.

But before anyone could celebrate, something happened.

Azure disappeared from the zoo. Staff and security looked all day that Christmas Eve, from cage to pen to pond, looking anxiously for the snow-white fox, but she wasn’t anywhere to be found. Sadly, they had to call Darren immediately and tell him the bad news: that his beautiful fox had escaped, and may have been taken by another animal or worse.

Darren got the news as he was returning from his family’s house and a very uncomfortable Christmas Eve dinner, filled with shouting and bullying. On top of everything else that had happened to him, this news was like a dagger to his heart, and he fell onto the living room floor sobbing uncontrollably for the loss of his beloved Azure.

**

On Christmas morning, Darren woke up, his eyes still wet from crying, and went to the front window, hoping against hope that his lovely fox might just be sitting on the front lawn in the snow, waiting for him to come outside. Instead, he found on his front walk the morning paper, a few ice patches, and a small envelope he at first took as a late Christmas card, perhaps from a neighbor.

He took everything inside and opened the envelope. Instead of a card, a small piece of paper with spiky handwriting on it slipped out into his palm. Beyond curious, he read the note:

“My beloved Darren, please do not cry. I am quite well and missing you terribly. When you get this, please come into the forest near your home. Look for the largest tree you can find, and then wait there until the moon rises. I will be waiting.”

Yours, Azuria”

Darren looked incredulously at the note for quite some time, then quickly dressed in his warmest clothes, filled a bottle with water, and then left his house and headed into the forest. As he approached the endless rows of trees, several of his friends, the deer, squirrels, bunnies, chipmunks, and other creatures seemed to welcome him by running up to him and then bounding around him in circles joyously. He laughed and waved to them all, and then started his journey into the deep forest.

In time, he found a very tall, majestic redwood, seemingly out of place among the spruces, oaks, and other trees. He gazed up at it in wonderment, thinking this had to be the largest tree he had ever seen in his life. Growing tired from walking, Darren sat down in the cold snow, bundled up his coat more, and took a few sips of water. After a few moments, he slept peacefully, dreaming of his fox.

**

When night came, Darren awoke with a start, freezing from head to toe, and realized how close he had come to death. Gingerly, he got to his feet and stomped around, getting his blood flowing again, his teeth chattering.

Suddenly, he heard a noise nearby him, and tried to peer into the darkness. He’d forgotten a flashlight back at the house, and the only light he could see was murky moonlight streaming through the trees from above.

“Azure?” he whispered toward the sound, suddenly afraid. There were lots of other creatures in the forest he really didn’t want to run into, like wildcats, coyotes, wolves, or bears.

The noises grew louder. Heavy footsteps in the snow and coming towards him slowly. Darren became more and more afraid as the sounds came nearer and nearer. He looked around wildly for anything he could use as a weapon to fend off whatever large thing was coming. There! He ducked away from the tree and picked up a large branch, laced with ice and moss, then steeled himself, ready to attack if necessary.

The footsteps stopped a few feet from him and he raised the branch over his head.

And then he heard something he didn’t really expect to hear in the deep, dark forest.

Laughter. Soft, sweet, female laughter. “Do you plan on hitting me with that, gentle human?”

Darren’s voice caught in his throat for he had no words to speak. He was absolutely beside himself by the sound of the beautiful voice, as gentle and lyrical as a winter sonnet. He fumbled for his breath again, which he’d been holding unknowingly. “I…um…I….I wasn’t going to unless I had to,” he said into the darkness. “I didn’t…realize anyone else was out here…”

The sweet voice replied, “I have been waiting for you…”

Darren swallowed hard. “Azure…?” He was beyond understanding. The Arctic fox could talk all this time?

There was a giggle. “Azuria…actually.” There was a pause, and then, “Come into the moonlight, Darren…come and see me.”

Darren gathered his nerves and walked carefully towards her voice, until he reached a small clearing just beyond the huge redwood. The moonlight came down almost like a spotlight and shone on the snow, and there was Azure.

For some moments, Darren was unable to speak. He just stood there and admired her. Like one of his Furaffinity fantasies come to life, Azure now stood before him, a beautiful snow-white goddess, on digitigrade footpaws, with short, shapely legs, a trim hourglass figure, slightly flared hips, voluptuous breasts, a kind fox face and muzzle, with the same crystal-blue eyes filled with mirth and merriment, and two pointed white-tufted ears nearly lost in long, golden hair. Behind her, a large, lush, thick foxtail twitched about nervously.

“I…” Darren started to speak, then felt himself swaying. He struggled to hold onto his consciousness and leaned heavily against a tree, breathing hard and closing his eyes, now convinced this was all a dream.

The anthro-vixen giggled again and approached him, reaching out to touch his arm. “Are you not happy to see me, beloved?” When he didn’t respond, she frowned. “Or are you…?”

Darren opened his eyes and saw her face close to his, her blue eyes studying his. “I just…” He realized again that she was completely nude, and his gaze wandered to her full breasts. “Wow…I…I just didn’t realize you were so…so…wow…”

She smiled dazzlingly, showing shiny white canines, and stepped closer to him, until her body was pressed to his, and he could feel the warmth of her coat envelop him like fire. “Beautiful?” she asked hopefully.

Darren felt incredibly warm and realized he’d been out in the cold snow way too long. He could no longer feel the blood through his veins and he was losing consciousness fast. “Beautiful…”

She kissed him fully, a long, silky tongue danced into his open mouth, and then he felt nothing more.

**

He awoke from his dream, clutching the sheets with both hands, still trembling. He glanced up and realized it was still dark outside. He was naked. He felt about on the bed for underwear or other clothes, and touched fur. Still shaking, he reached to turn on his lamp and look beside him.

Azuria was curled up against him asleep, in her full anthro form, naked as well. Her long blonde hair spilled around her head, nearly hiding her face. She was as beautiful as when he had seen her in the forest. Without even realizing what he was doing, he put a hand on her shoulder and caressed her arm, and those remarkable blue eyes opened slowly to look at him.

“Beloved?” she spoke in her gentle voice, and reached under the sheets, tracing his growing erection with a subtle paw until she could hardly hold its girth.

Darren rolled over atop of her and kissed her deeply, and as her legs wrapped around his hips, and her paw guided him towards and into her silky, wet heat, he realized he loved her.

**

The morning after Christmas, the two lovers awoke and took a long, hot bath together. Darren was ecstatic when Azuria insisted on bathing him, and he was only too eager to return the gesture, joking about how this was their second time taking a bath together. They laughed then and as soon as they were both lathered and smelling like lavender, they made love again in the hot, bubbly water.

“I have a question to ask, beloved,” Azuria later spoke as she sat by the fire, while Darren knelt behind her, drying every tuft of her fur with a soft, cotton towel. “First, do you love me?”

“With all my heart and soul,” Darren answered, and leaned forward to nuzzle her ears.

Azuria smiled fondly and closed her eyes. “I want you to leave this place, and stay with me in the forest.”

Darren stopped drying and sat down next to her. “Wait, Azuria, you want me to just…just…leave this life behind and stay outside? In this weather I’d freeze to death. If I haven’t already and this is just some really crazy dream in the afterlife…”

The vixen giggled. “No, beloved. You simply fainted and I carried you, with some help, back to your house. I undressed you and helped put you into bed. Sometime during the night, you…” She ran her tongue over her lips. “You…mated me.” She then nuzzled his cheek. “And it was the most wonderful mating ever. I knew then…I needed you, and wanted only you…” Her paw reached down to his undershorts and rubbed. “I will always want you, beloved. I have been looking for you all my life…”

“But…who…what are you?” Darren struggled to keep his erection in his pants.

Azuria smiled. “A Christmas fox. I was blessed long, long ago with powerful magic while I was in your forest. A kindly gentleman in a red and white suit, and a snowy beard came upon me one day. I had become caught in a hunter’s trap, bleeding and near death. He took pity and extricated me, but I was slowly dying in his arms. I was filled with hatred for the humans, and it was killing me. Then he said something I could not hear nor understand, and then I began to feel better. He set me down in the snow and then smiled. He told me I was now a Christmas fox, an ever-lasting creature that could show love and compassion and kindness to all mankind, instead of cold, bitter hate. He said that I was very special, and my powers would enable me to understand the humans, to be, well, a little more like them, and I would be able to learn from them, and one day, find one I would truly love forever.”

She paused and took his hand, nuzzling his cheek again. “You are the one I choose, beloved Darren. When we made love…it…it was very special…it was beautiful…it was everything I dreamed…”

Darren’s eyes welled with tears and he kissed her mouth. “It was for me too. Honestly, you’re the best I’ve ever had…I love you…”

Azuria nodded. “Then turn with me, Darren.” Her paw touched his chest. “You can now…”

“What do you mean?”

Azuria just smiled secretly. “Just do it…”

Darren looked at her, not understanding, and then a wave of nausea rushed through him. He immediately felt like the room was spinning like a top and he wanted to faint. He fell back on the floor, breathing heavily, and then his whole body tingled, as if the blood was rushing entirely too fast through his system. He closed his eyes tightly and waited for the feeling to pass.

His feet changed first. His toes shriveled and then his feet stretched out and became digitigrade and more jointed, tipped with sharp claws. His arms and legs shook and lush white fur sprouted forth, covering his entire body head to toe. His ears faded into his head and his face pulled away, forming a handsome fox muzzle, complete with pointed nose and long whiskers. As he lay on the floor, he felt something growing underneath him, and realized it was the same lush fox fur as Azuria’s against his bare back.

Finally the wave of dizziness passed and he opened his eyes, sitting up slowly. Azuria watched him fondly, and she giggled again, looking completely happy. “Ohhh beloved, you are so…” She didn’t finish but instead murred loudly and nestled into his lap, and by the light of the warm fire, the Christmas foxes made love again until the early evening hours.

**

“Merry Christmas,” Darren chuckled as he brought in the few presents from under the tree and into the bedroom, stirring the vixen from sleep. “I know it’s two days late but…here…”

“Beloved?” Azuria asked groggily, and tilted her head at the small boxes next to her. “Oh you really didn’t need to-“

“I did,” Darren smiled and his tail twitched excitedly as he sat down on the bed next to her and kissed. “Open them…”

Blushing, Azuria used her claws to tear through the wrapped packages one by one. Inside were a luxurious blue coat, a puffy blue hat, and a blue silk scarf.

“They were supposed to be for my girlfriend Belinda, but she dumped me.” He watched the vixen try on the presents and they were a perfect fit. Also, the blue clothes went with her eyes just as perfectly. “Wow…you look…amazing…” He kissed her again passionately and when they both broke from the kiss they were warm and wanting again.

“Come on, before I mate you right here…” Darren chuckled and got up. “I have some things to pack I guess, huh?”

Azuria smiled sadly and reached for his paw. “Beloved, I…I do not think you quite understand. You have no reason to pack. In fact…” She hesitated. “You have no reason to return to the human world. That is the condition of our love. And…and it is the reason I have never found the right human yet. No one ever…” Her eyes began to tear and she wiped them. “No one ever wants to…stay with me…in the forest…”

Darren thought about his home, his job, his family, what little human companionship he had, and lastly he thought of Belinda, who not too long ago had angrily told him to go and stay with the animals. “Azuria,” he sighed. “I don’t need to think about it. I want to stay with you.”

Azuria’s eyes widened and she burst with joy, nearly pouncing him and covering his muzzle in happy kisses and licks. “Oh beloved!” she cried happily.

Darren smiled and hugged her tightly and felt his whole body tingling. The wave of nausea returned again and he started to shift once more.

**

Much later that night, two white foxes bounded and chased one another through several snowbanks and trees in the forest. In time, they rested from their play and watched the moon rise. Above them, one of the foxes noticed a small hanging plant.

“Well, I’ll be. That’s mistletoe!”

The other fox smiled and nuzzled its cheek. “What is that?”

The companion snorted. “You call yourself a Christmas fox!? Mistletoe! Humans kiss one another under them, silly vixen.”

She giggled and her eyes sparkled. “Oh…then I guess you had better kiss me…” The two foxes touched muzzles and licked one another’s tongues.

“Merry Christmas, Azuria.”

“Merry Christmas, beloved Darren.”

The two Christmas foxes started off into the forest, close together, until they were soon lost from sight in the misty moonlight.
