PRIDE AND HUMILITY

>The blast knocks you off your feet, even from across the room.

>The crowd of anthros between you and the grenade scatter like leaves, and the smell of burning fur fills the room.

>It wasn't an ordinary explosive.

>The foyer is half-lit with hellfire now. It's hard to tell what destruction is new and what is old.

>You spot a deeper red among the flames, tattered and scorched.

>Rebecca wears a duster now -- that or her sweater has torn along the front.

>Somehow she's in one piece when you reach her, reeling but alive.

>"Rebecca? What the hell are you --"

>You barely dodge her sword.

>She snarls at you for a moment; then her singed ears prick up.

>"Anon," she huffs, her huge blade scraping the ground. "Is that really you, Anon?"

>"Yes. Yes, it's me, now what's going on? Why are you here?"

>The tigress coughs, stabbing her surfboard-sized sword in the ground.

>"Something personal," she manages, struggling to stand. "You should leave."

>"This is my job now."

>She flinches when you get underneath her arm and attempt to help her stand.

>It gets a chuckle from her.

>"I appreciate the gesture, Anon, but I can --"

>Her knee gives out. Yours almost do when she leans heavily on you.

>"Come -- on --"

>Rebecca grunts, following your lead.

>The huge blade she's wielding hums low. You'd check it with your scope, but you're somewhat occupied.

>The metal is dark and rippling, the cross guard and handle somewhat crude.

>"I've got -- medical gear in the car," you manage, pulling her towards the doors. "Just a little -- further -- and -- "

>The mansion creaks as smoldering timbers drop down in front of your exit.

>"It's fine," Rebecca rumbles, turning the two of you around. "I wasn't planning on leaving."

>"You're hurt!"

>She pulls away, leaning heavily on her blade with a restrained hiss.

>"...was when I got here," she mutters.

>There's bite to it, more than you'd expect from her.

>...Not that you expected the sweet tigress to end up in the field at all.

>You look her up and down; splinters, slices, and searing cover her fur.

>Less than she should have considering she was right next to the blast.

>Rebecca looks up when you tear your IFAK open.

>"I told you, I'm fine," she says.

>"You can barely stand."

>"I'm fine!" she growls, teetering as she lifts her blade. "I -- I can finish this."

>There's more crackling and splintering. Thin screams and snarls join in as piles of rubble begin to shift.

>You summon Talia with a grimace.

>"You're not finishing anything if you can barely lift that sword."

>The mansion lets out a deep shudder; only when you catch the glow do you realize the rumbling is coming from Rebecca.

>She swings the sword in a massive arc with a roar, smashing one of the monsters before it can free itself from the ruble.

>The blade hums and glows dully as she hacks and slashes.

>Splinters of wood and bone fly.

>Limbs follow suit when anthros from the other piles get free and charge.

>You blast them with Talia, taking some down before they can even get to the tigress.

>Somewhere in the chaos, you note how their bodies are burned and broken.

>Your ears ring when they stop coming. Rebecca stabs the last on with a huff, leaning on her sword.

>It's hard to tell whose blood is whose on her white fur.

>"How's that -- for barely lifting it?" she asks.

>She flinches when you point her way and fire; a crawling torso falls dead behind her.

>"You're leaning on it again," you say, letting Talia disappear.

>Rebecca snarls when you approach, but you get under her arm.

>You've faced things far more frightening.

>"Give me your weight. Let's get somewhere less open."

>The tigress's rumble goes on for a moment before she relents. You have to stifle a grunt when she leans your way.

>Even using her sword like a cane, she's heavy as a boulder. You grunt when she goes to move.

>"Hang on."

>"Accepted I'm too heavy?" she asks.

>You flip down the PsyScope, fiddling with the focus and overlays before going back to bracing her.

>"Making sure we'll have some privacy," you say.

>You take a breath.

>"Let's move."
