Starting a new folder for really long story drafts that I rarely finish. This one is old, like years old. It started out as an assassin's creed fic and then morphed into a conspiracy thing? It's like 70 pages long in word and I'm trying to trim the rest hahaha, maybe someone here will get a kick out of it. I do plan on finishing this one honestly. I've got the entire story . . . It just barely makes sense after years of slow iteration. But that's on/off writing for you!

Chapter 1

The midday sun cast a warm golden glow over the bustling city of Avenshire. The city streets below were alive with a vibrant mix of anthropomorphic animals and humans, going about their daily routines. Towering buildings lined the cobblestone streets, displaying a fusion of architectural styles that transported visitors to a bygone era.

At the heart of the city stood the majestic Avenshire Cathedral, its intricate stonework and towering spires reaching towards the heavens. Perched high above, atop the church's bell tower, Aero and Tygas found solace from the busy streets below.

The bell tower offered a breathtaking view of the city's skyline. From their vantage point, the duo could see the ornate rooftops, adorned with gilded sculptures and colorful tiles, showcasing the blending of Victorian England and Renaissance Italy. The air was filled with the faint melody of church bells, harmonizing with the vibrant energy of the city.

A small stone table was placed on the tower's platform, covered with a checkered cloth, where Aero and Tygas sat. The aroma of freshly baked bread and savory delicacies filled the air, as they unwrapped their lunch. A crusty baguette, wheels of cheese, and slices of succulent cured meats adorned their makeshift picnic.

Aero grabbed a baguette for himself and flicked his wrist outward. A hidden blade sprung from the contraption on his wrist, which he gladly used to cut the bread.

His master Tygas shook his head and said, “You're the laziest apprentice I've ever had to take on. It's a miracle you ever made it through the crucible."

Aero shrugged and shot back saying, “And you're the drunkest master I've ever trained under. It's amazing you ever made it through our training sessions!" Tygas chuckled to himself as he poured a glass of wine. “Fair point rookie, but that laissez-faire attitude of yours is gonna get you in trouble. Slow period or not, assassins should always stay sharp."

Aero had heard this lecture time and time again, and it never ceased to annoy him. “I know master, but you know I always come through when the order demands it. Instead of lazy I'd say . . . I'm remarkably efficient!" Tygas wanted to admonish Aero some more, but he could only manage another chuckle as the young apprentice burst into laughter himself.

As the two settled back down Tygas then grew serious and said, “I'm thinking of moving chapters. Starting fresh somewhere else you know?" Tygas' tone was soft and somber, unlike his usual sarcastic and gruff nature. Aero laughed him off replying, “Oh that must be some fantastic wine master!" Though as Aero laughed, Tygas sat still and quiet.

Aero's jolly mood quickly died as the realization finally hit him. “Y-you plan t-to . . . defect?" He whispered as if it were a dirty word. Tygas sat unmoving and replied, “I wanted to tell you sooner, but I figured that some good food and nice wine would soften the blow."

“Can I ask why?" Tygas nodded slowly before letting out a heavy sigh. 'Honestly? I don't have the heart anymore. There's been . . . a shift in how the order operates and I don't like it. We used to exact justice and retribution against the Pack, protect humanity from their corrupting influence, but now? We guard vile senators, and attack our own people for their gain. We're not a noble organization anymore . . . we're puppets for the ruling classes." Tygas glanced over at his apprentice huffing and saying, “You've had the same qualms. You complained about my last assignment."

“Yes I did. Killing an innocent clergyman goes against everything we stand for! Even if he's a beastman, it's still wrong." Tygas smiled at his apprentice's own conviction and said,

“I know. That's why I let him live. Father Samuel was a man of the cloth, and he lived what he preached. The only people who wanted him dead were those in parliament that didn't appreciate his open criticisms. That's not a system I can support."

Tygas then casted his gaze towards the city, leaving Aero to ponder his musings. The young apprentice gazed at his mentor with concern and asked, “So what's our next move?"

“There is no 'we' Aero. You need to forge your own path. Can't have an old man keeping you from your own potential."

“With all due respect master . . . That's horseshit. You don't want me to be targeted with you."

“No one has to pay for my sins. The order won't take kindly to me disappearing."

“Yea? Well neither will I. I go where you go master. End of discussion. Besides I was thinking about a change of scenery myself!"

“Heh. So you were . . . Come. We can discuss the finer points later, it's getting late and we'll need to report soon."

As Aero and Tygas savored the last of their meal, the sunlight danced upon their faces, casting playful shadows against the stone walls. Their attire, a blend of practicality and style, reflected the city's unique blend of cultures. Aero wore a fitted vest with intricate embroidery, while Tygas donned a well-tailored coat adorned with medals earned from their guild's successful missions.

The soft breeze carried snippets of conversation and laughter from the lively marketplace, drifting up to the bell tower. Street performers entertained passersby with music and acrobatics, adding a touch of whimsy to the already enchanting atmosphere. The distant clatter of horse-drawn carriages and the rhythmic trot of hooves added a sense of old-world charm.

With the city as their backdrop, the two assassins enjoyed a momentary respite from the dangerous world they navigated. The air was filled with camaraderie and unspoken understanding between them, forged through countless adventures and shared secrets.

As the bells tolled in the distance, announcing the passage of time, Aero and Tygas finished their meal. They exchanged a knowing look, their eyes filled with determination. Soon, their restful moment would come to an end, and they would return to the shadows, ready to execute their next mission for the guild.

But for now, on top of the Avenshire Cathedral's bell tower, they relished in the beauty of the city and the bond between them, savoring the brief interlude of tranquility in their tumultuous lives.

Chapter 2

Tygas and Aero found themselves in the heart of the assassin guild's stronghold, known as the "Hidden Hall." The dimly lit chamber exuded an aura of secrecy and danger, its stone walls adorned with ancestral crests and faded tapestries depicting the order's rich history. Torches flickered along the corridor, casting dancing shadows that seemed to whisper of hidden agendas and whispered secrets.

As they waited, a sense of unease settled over them, their minds preoccupied with the arrival of the influential politician and the potential threat he posed to their order. The politician's name had become synonymous with controversy, his policies veiled in ambiguity and his intentions questioned by many within the guild. Rumors of his desire to exert control over the Hidden Hall had spread like wildfire, fueling Tygas and Aero's apprehension.

Time seemed to crawl as they exchanged glances, their thoughts locked in a shared concern. They were acutely aware of the fragile balance that held their order together, and the possibility of its disruption from within was a haunting specter that loomed over their every move. Their loyalty to the guild and its principles burned fiercely within their hearts, driving them to protect it at any cost.

Just as their tension reached its peak, a hushed whisper echoed through the corridor, signaling the approach of their revered grand master, Arevidi. The heavy wooden door creaked open, revealing a figure cloaked in shadows, his presence commanding respect and reverence. Arevidi, a wise and weathered leader, exuded an air of authority that permeated the chamber, instantly capturing the attention of all within.

The grand master's voice, steady and measured, filled the room as he addressed the gathered assassins. “Brother . . . Sisters . . . I know of what worries you. Your fears of Regent Rau. I hear the whispers of how he 'will unravel' our order's web of influence and how he will spell the end of our chapter. You all must know that I will not allow that to happen. Our cooperation is predicated on the fact that parliament needs us more than we need them. Keep the faith and understand that our order is stronger than its ever been! We will crush the Pack and every beastman that opposes us!"

His words carried a weight of purpose and determination, a rallying call to preserve the integrity of their order in the face of impending challenges. Tygas and Aero leaned forward, their gazes fixed upon the grand master, absorbing every word, every nuance of guidance.

Arevidi acknowledged the concerns that hung heavily in the air, assuring the gathered assassins that their fears were not unfounded. He spoke of the importance of remaining vigilant, of uncovering the truth beneath the politician's veneer and protecting the sanctity of the Hidden Hall. His voice resonated with a steely resolve, emboldening Tygas and Aero, reminding them of their duty as guardians of the guild's legacy.

With each passing moment in Arevidi's presence, the tension within Tygas and Aero began to subside. They found some solace in the grand master's unwavering belief in their abilities, his trust a beacon of reassurance in troubled times. Their worries, though not entirely dispelled, were tempered by a newfound determination to uncover the politician's true intentions and safeguard their order.

As the meeting concluded, Tygas and Aero hung around for a bit, waiting for the crowd to clear some. The young apprentice leaned against the banister and asked, “Not going to lie Master . . . I feel a little better about things honestly. I just can't seer Master Arevidi letting things get out of hand too much. He's a very calculated grand master."

“Do you feel good enough to stay?" Aero folded his arms and shook his head saying, “No. Though if there is a conspiracy against the order then I feel we still have a duty to unravel it no?" Aero then dropped the volume of his voice and looked off past Tygas saying, “We'll still be assassins yes?"

“Always. We may not be with this chapter or even the order, but I plan to still follow the creed. The tenets were drafted for a reason." Satisfied with his master's answer, Aero stepped forward and placed a hand on his shoulder saying, “ I'm with you all the way Master." Tygas a tired smirk and returned the embrace saying, “Never had a doubt in my mind . . ."

Though tender and authentic, the moment was interrupted by the Grand Master calling the duo saying, “Tygas! Aero! Come will you? There is something we need to discuss."

Tygas waved and called back saying, “Yes Grand Master. We're on our way up now." Arevidi nodded as he turned and headed deeper into the war room. The duo exchanged a few guarded looks before finally climbing the large staircase to meet with their leader.

The Grand Master knelt with frustration over the ornate planning table. He had his hood was up, but the silver streaks painting his hair and grayed beard were very visible. His tired eyes met with Tygas and Aero's concerned ones, and the mood for the meeting was already set. He sighed and shook his head before saying, “ I know what you two are thinking and the rumors are not true. Regent Rau is not pushing for the brotherhood to become some . . . sort of secret police force for the elite. Our values and ambitions align and for now that is enough to facilitate the cooperation between our two organizations."

His words were strong, but his tone? Urgent and soft. Something was amiss with Arevidi and both assassins could tell.

“Grand Master if I may ask? Why not we remove Rau and his followers from the equation? Even if there's much to be gained by working together, surely not at the cost of our integrity? We should not be beholden to some pompous politician in parliament!"

“Silence yourself Tygas! You should know your place when in the presence of a grand master!" Tygas and Aero were taken back by Arevidi's rebuke. Despite being the order's grand master, he was usually very relaxed when talking to those under him. Tygas opened his mouth to retort, but he noticed the strained look Arevidi was giving.

The Grandmaster slowly and silently mouthed off what he actually wanted to say, “Order compromised. Spies everywhere. Trust no one." _The room became even more tense as the Grand Master silently slid a sealed letter across the table. He then fixed his face and tone saying, “I called you in here because I want you two to do more _covert training exercises. We all need to stay in top form if we are to maintain our edge against the animals in the north!"

Aero raised an eyebrow at the task. Covert field exercises were a fundamental regiment of assassins. It was a training given to recently inducted members of the order, trainees. Not Masters like Tygas or even advanced members like Aero. The younger assassin cleared his throat and cautiously asked, “Is there somewhere specifically you'd like us to train? In the political districts of Avenshire?"

Arevidi shook his head while also tapping the letter saying, “No no much further out. We have trainees down in the political district. You two need to sharpen your skills in unfamiliar environments. Head to Ra'Kasha and train there." Arevidi then turned from the duo and walked to a nearby bookshelf. He scanned the shelves for a few seconds before coming to the book he wanted. “Here." he said with an unceremonious throw.

The tome landed with a 'THUD' on the table, covering the letter he had slid over earlier. Take that field guide and do some right proper studying for once. All exercises by the book. Is that understood?"

Both assassins sounded off with a, “Yes Grand Master!"

“Excellent. Head for Avenshire station then. There should be a contact waiting for you before your train departs. If that all makes sense then you both are dismissed." Tygas grabbed the book and was careful to make sure he picked up the letter as well. As the duo left they caught a subtle nod from Arevidi, confirming his odd behavior and their own suspicions.

Nothing more was said as they made their way out of the Hidden Hall, but with every step taken they couldn't help but feel as if they were being watched.

Chapter 3

The two assassins walked briskly through the now quiet streets of Avenshire. Night had fallen and mostly everyone had gone inside for the night. A few anthros and humans milled about, tavern crawling or soliciting others, but other than that it was an uneventful night . . . Almost.

Not a word had been uttered between them since they left and they were going to jeep it that way until they had boarded the train. The conspiracy ran a lot deeper than either of them could have imagined and one false word could spell their demise. Tygas was mentally kicking himself for being so loose-lipped for the past several months. He blamed his lapse of judgement on the bottle, but even then his rampant alcoholism was his fault . . .

The two made their way up the stations steps and immediately found the contact. He wasn't even trying to hide honestly. He was leaning against a lamppost, cleaning a curved knife of his. Tygas and Aero tried to walk past him, but he slunk up next to them saying, “The poet has been blinded by light . . ." Tygas recognized the code and returned the other half saying, “But the quill continues to write . . ."

There was a look of immense relief on the assassin's face as he whispered, “Thank the stars you knew the code. Arevidi told me it was one that was never in circulation."

“It's an inside joke of ours from way back . . . What do you have for us?" The assassin quickly tossed another letter towards Tygas saying, “I think you'll find that letter a much more pleasant reading experience than the one given to you by the Grand Master." Tygas took out Arevidi's letter and handed it to the awaiting assassin.

“Poison? He wants us dead?"

“Not Arevidi, but Rau. There's been a purge happening amongst the ranks. Arevidi is helping as many as he can escape, but he needs to keep appearances." Aero looked around the station and asked, “Did you properly sweep the area before we arrived?"

The assassin only smirked while revealing a bit of blood still on his dagger. “One of Rau's plants were here, but he unfortunately won't be reporting back to his master anytime soon." Tygas nodded in approval and said, “Excellent work brother. What's your next move?"

“Guide Arevidi's next groups out of here. He's only picked a select few to survive the purge. You've all been given your assignments so when the train leaves town read up on what yours is."

“What is your name brother? So we can remember you for your sacrifice." The assassin shook his head and said, “No recognition or remembrance needed. In fact forget you ever saw me. If we all play our parts then fate will will us together again. Only with a stronger and better order."

Tygas and Aero gave their silent thanks as the assassin then pulled his hood over his face. He gave one final lazy salute before walking towards the darkness of the lower platform. Once he was out of sight they made their way onto the awaiting train. There was very few traveling at this hour so the duo had the locomotive nearly all to themselves.

The two instinctively made their way towards the furthest car back they could. It was generally accepted that you never wanted anyone behind you as an assassin. Bad for your long term health is what Tygas always said.

The train's horn suddenly screamed to life as the steam engine slowly propelled the cars forward. There were a few CHUGGA, CHUGGA, CHUGGA s as the vehicle accelerated, but eventually it finally gained speed and careened out of the station.

The assassins had taken a sleeping car, but even with the amenities of a bed, Aero was still uncomfortable saying, “We should have taken a prime class car master. This bed is going to kill my back."

Tygas barely paid him any mind as he began opening the letter. “Be thankful you've got a bed to sleep in tonight. You recall the time we stalked that Prestolian dog in the jungle? Sleeping in the trees was fun?"

Aero chuckled and replied, “ I recall very well. That was the first time I had seen someone drink for 3 days and still be an effective assassin."

“Heh. I wish I had a drink right now . . ." Aero sat up in the bed and asked, “The letter that bad?"

“Come take a look for yourself." Tygas said while holding the letter out for Aero to read. The junior assassin hopped over to the master's bed and grabbed the letter.

“If you're reading this then our chapter of the brotherhood has fallen. There is no remedying this situation. I was arrogant and let the machinations of parliament unravel our order. Though hope is not yet lost. To you; Tygas and Aero. I ask you to recover a precursor artifact from the Icy mountains of Ra'Kasha. The artifacts should remain in the hands of the true order. Not the beasts, not parliament, and certainly not the tainted ones that follow us. Trust in each other and the tenets of our people . . . Stay your blade from the flesh of an innocent, Hide in plain sight, and most important . . . Never compromise the Brotherhood . . ."

“That's it Master . . . you think many others survived?" Tyga shrugged and said, “I wouldn't count on it. Arevidi would have had to choose very carefully to make sure things didn't leak to Rau. We just need to focus on ourselves . . . and our task."

Aero gave a nervous shudder at the thought. Precursor artifacts were powerful ancient devices crafted by godlike species . . . or so the study material went. The hidden hall had one under lock and key called the “Rift Breaker." Apparently it had the power to cause earth quakes? He had never seen or experienced it, but with the way the elders in the order talked about it, it was a destructive tool.

The animal people also possessed some of their own and that was the only thing that kept both groups from opening killing each other en mass. No one was exactly sure what theirs could do and vice versa so besides shadowy sabatoge, the Assassin's order and the Animalia Protectorate kept a shaky “agreement." Though that was neither here nor there. They needed to get a game plan going.

“Alright master what's our plan?"

Tygas flipped the letter over, revealing a crude map that Arevidi had given them. “The artifact is most likely here in the upper region of the mountains. Thankfully the train has a line that will take us pretty close. The animals have a work detail up there which makes thing easy."

“Aren't there checkpoints for humans though?"

“Yes, but that's not what worries me. It's scaling the mountain. Who knows exactly where it is, and we don't have the equipment for that kind of climb." Aero scratched his chin and nodded in agreement saying, “That's true, but perhaps we can just use the cavern system on the inside? Higher chance of discovery, but better than slipping off of an ice wall and breaking a neck yea?"

Tygas huffed before lying down, “Yea yea, sounds fine. Wake me when we're at the next checkpoint. You know I'm not a morning person, so I need as much sleep as I can get."

“Enjoy your beauty sleep your highness." Tygas waved his apprentice off before lying on his side and trying to force some rest. He was beyond anxious but he had to keep it together for Aero. The apprentice would always look to the master for guidance in the time of stress. 'Can't fall apart now' he thought while screwing his eyes shut.

Aero slid back into his own bed and pondered over the letter some more. The shock of the situation was still processing for both assassins, but as the train pulled into the outskirts of enemy territory, they knew they were truly on their own now.

Chapter 4

The train jolted to a halt as it reached the frost-laden region of Ra'Kasha. Aero and Tygas exchanged a glance, a silent acknowledgement of the dangerous task that lay ahead. They observed through the frosted windows as patrol animals, draped in furs and armed with sharp instincts, conducted a meticulous sweep of the train.

The sound of crunching snow beneath their boots echoed as the duo disembarked, their breath visible in the frigid air. They blended into the bustling platform crowd, ensuring their presence remained inconspicuous amidst the flurry of activity. Cloaked in nondescript attire, they moved with purpose, their eyes scanning the surroundings for any signs of suspicion.

Aero and Tygas maneuvered through the station, their steps light and calculated. They avoided lingering in the direct line of sight of the patrolling animal guards, always mindful of the ever-watchful eyes that surveilled the region. As they made their way towards the outskirts of the station, they found an opportunity to slip away unnoticed.

The snow-covered landscape stretched out before them, a vast expanse of pristine white punctuated by towering evergreens. The biting wind cut through their clothing, urging them to press onward. Their destination, Mount See'vash, loomed in the distance, its cavernous maw concealed within the jagged peaks.

Silently, they weaved through the treacherous terrain, their steps leaving faint imprints in the snow, quickly covered by the wind's relentless embrace. They approached the mouth of the mountain cautiously, their hearts pounding in their chests as they prepared to infiltrate the Protectorate's stronghold.

Navigating through a labyrinth of narrow passages, Aero and Tygas relied on their finely honed instincts and stealthy prowess. Their senses heightened, they detected faint echoes of distant voices and the clinks of tools against stone, indicating the presence of the Protectorate's operatives within.

The pair huddled behind a rocky outcrop, peering into the vast cavern ahead. The air was thick with the scent of earth and anticipation. Glimmers of torchlight danced off the glistening walls, revealing the Protectorate's excavation efforts in search of the artifact.

With a silent exchange of understanding, Aero and Tygas synchronized their movements, inching closer towards their objective. They slinked along the cavern's periphery, shadows their steadfast companions. The duo relied on their training, every muscle and instinct attuned to the task at hand.

Heartbeats thudded in their ears as they weaved through the maze of crates and makeshift structures. They avoided the vigilant gazes of patrolling guards, their footsteps muffled by their own quiet determination. The tension in the air was palpable, the risk of discovery heightening the thrill that coursed through their veins.

Finally, they reached the heart of the cavern, where the Protectorate's relentless digging had exposed a hidden chamber. The artifact lay within, its ancient power beckoning to be reclaimed. Aero and Tygas exchanged a fleeting glance, their resolve unwavering. The assassins halted their advance though as they heard voices.

Deeper within the caverns, two animal miners toiled away, their paws covered in dust and their expressions etched with weariness. As they chipped away at the rocky walls, a hushed conversation began amidst the echoes of their labor.

A grizzled badger said, “So, I heard some chatter from the surface. Seems like the big bosses have arrived to inspect our progress."

His friend, a curious rabbit asked, “The big bosses? What are they doing here? It's not every day they come down to the mines.

“That's what I'm wondering too. Word is, they want to see how far we've dug and what we've found. It's got me a bit on edge, I must say."

“Well, it's not like we've been slacking off. We've been excavating day and night, unearthing all sorts of things. Did you see that chamber we stumbled upon? It was like nothing I've ever seen before."

The badger nodded replying, “Oh, I saw it alright. The moment we uncovered that thing, everything changed. They ordered us to halt the excavation, no explanation given. It's got me worried, friend. Why would they stop us when we were onto something big?"

“I've been wondering the same thing. It's not like they're known for being open about their decisions. But stopping us just when we found that chamber... Could it mean trouble for us? Are they planning to replace us with some other mining company?"

Tygas and Aero shared worried glances as they eavesdropped on the pair. Aero quietly asked, “The Protectorate will claim the artifact soon if we don't move!"

“I heard but we need to step cautiously. We've come too far now to get sloppy in our approach." Aero relented and awaited his master's signal. The two watched as the miner friends finally decided to stop working and move elsewhere, leaving the exposed chamber all for them. Tygas carefully slid down the steep outcrop trying not to make much noise, but Aero forwent all of that with an acrobatic flip from the top of the ledge. He landed nimbly and quietly as he looked over at his older master and smirked.

“Show off." Tygas mumbled while walking past his apprentice. The two then stalked inside of the chamber, unsure of what awaited them.

Time seemed to stand still as they carefully approached the artifact, its aura pulsating with an enigmatic energy. They extended gloved hands, ready to retrieve what had been lost, and restore balance to their order. With a swift and practiced motion, they secured the artifact, cradling it protectively.

The artifact, a jade necklace of intricate design, possessed an aura of mystery and allure. Crafted with meticulous artistry, the neck part of the necklace was adorned with archaic markings, hinting at a forgotten language or ancient script. The jade itself had a smooth and polished surface, bearing the rich green hue that jade was renowned for.

At the center of the necklace, nestled within a delicate setting, rested the true gem—a large and resplendent emerald jewel. Its brilliance was mesmerizing, with the emerald reflecting light in a kaleidoscope of colors, captivating any onlooker who dared to gaze upon it. The emerald seemed to possess an inner glow, casting a gentle luminosity that emanated from within.

While the artifact was undeniably beautiful, its true nature remained elusive.

Tygas was first to grab it, but once it was in his hands he cocked his eyebrow in confusion and said, “This ugly necklace is what we were after?" It sat in his grasp, cold and inert, devoid of any discernible power.

“Let me take a look at it Master." Tygas shrugged and tossed the artifact saying, “Knock yourself out. Green isn't my color anyways."

As soon as Aero took hold of the artifact, a subtle transformation took place. The necklace, seemingly attuned to Aero's touch, responded to his presence. Soft, ethereal light suffused the emerald jewel, emanating from its depths and casting a radiant glow upon Aero's hands.

“Whoa . . ." Was all the young assassin could say as he felt a soft pulse from the artifact. Tygas scratched his chin and curiously looked at the necklace asking, “How do you feel? Powerful?"

“More like I have to piss, but other than that? Nothing. Makes for a neat light show yea?" Tygas opened his mouth to retort, but was beaten to it by another voice in the chamber.

“A wonderful light show indeed, but I'm going to have to ask you to now return our property." Both assassin nearly jumped out of their skins as they heard the authoritative voice boom at them. Tygas and Aero threw themselves on the defensive and stood alert as their “company" came closer.

Chapter 5

The confrontation crackled with tension as the four assassins stood facing each other, the air thick with unspoken rivalry and clashing ideologies. The masterful wolf, his silver fur shimmering under the dim light, exuded an aura of experience and wisdom. His name was Aric Thornbane, a name that echoed through the annals of the Animalia Protectorate. By his side stood his apprentice, a young and alluring vixen with fiery red fur and piercing amber eyes. Her name was Vespera Lor'dun, a name whispered with equal parts awe and trepidation.

Aric, the embodiment of calculated pragmatism, regarded Tygas and Aero with a measured gaze. He believed in the cause of the Animalia Protectorate, just as Tygas and Aero believed in their own order. His words carried a weight of authority, tempered by a hint of weariness. "Surrender peacefully, Tygas and Aero," he advised, his voice resonating with a firm yet composed tone. "Return the artifact. We need not spill needless blood."

“Wonder who told him about us . . ." Aero asked sarcastically. The human master ignored the quip and stared Aric down.

Tygas, unyielding and steadfast, tightened his grip around his worn broadsword, its blade bearing the scars of countless battles fought. His eyes gleamed with determination, mirroring the resolve etched upon his face. Refusing the offer of surrender, he locked gazes with Aric and replied with a low, resolute voice, "We won't hand it over, not without a fight."

Aero, ever the strategist and defender, brandished his clean and sharp rapier, its slender blade glinting under the pale light. His movements were graceful and controlled, reflecting his defensive and tactical approach to combat. His eyes, a shade of piercing green, held a flicker of caution as he positioned himself alongside Tygas, ready to face their adversaries.

In response to Tygas' defiance, Aric drew forth his weapon—a double-bladed spear—a symbol of his mastery and adaptability in combat. The spear's gleaming blades reflected the harsh reality of their impending clash. Beside him, Vespera's lithe figure came alive as she brandished a pair of wickedly sharp sickles, her disdain for humanity evident in the curl of her lips and the fire that burned within her eyes.

The stage was set for a battle of ideals, as well as skill and strength. Human versus animal, each pair of assassins representing opposing worlds and clashing philosophies. The clash of steel and the dance of deadly prowess would soon fill the cavernous depths of Mount See'vash, where the fate of the artifact and the destinies of those involved would hang in the balance.

The tension in the cavern reached its peak as Aric, the seasoned wolf master, gave one last chance for Tygas and Aero to surrender. His voice, calm yet authoritative, echoed off the stone walls. "Consider this your final opportunity," he warned, his eyes narrowing with a mix of determination and wariness.

But Aric's words only fueled the flames of Vespera's rage. The young vixen, her fury uncontainable, seethed with the desire to eliminate the human assassins without further delay. Her amber eyes blazed with an intensity that matched the fire in her heart. She lashed out at her master, her voice filled with venomous defiance. "No, Aric! They deserve death for their insolence!"

Vespera's open rebellion against her master became an exploitable weakness in the eyes of Tygas. A smirk curled upon his lips as he taunted her, seeking to provoke her into an impulsive attack. "Come now, little fox," he jeered, his words dripping with contempt. "Your figure betrays your weakness. I've slain many warriors in combat, but foxes... well, they've always been the easiest."

Aric's voice resonated with urgency as he tried to calm his apprentice, fully aware of Tygas' ploy. "Vespera, hold!" he commanded, his tone laced with concern. "This is what they want. Do not fall into their trap."

But Vespera's fury overwhelmed her reason. Blinded by rage, she lunged towards Tygas, abandoning caution and heeding the call of her vengeful heart. Her sickles gleamed with deadly intent as she sought to end his life.

As Vespera charged, Tygas welcomed her attack, a calculated grin playing on his lips. With a well-timed parry, he deflected her strike, disrupting her momentum and causing her to stumble before him. In one swift motion, Tygas slashed across her leather armor, his blade slicing through the material and drawing blood. The crimson stain marred her once pristine white underbelly.

Just as Tygas prepared for the killing blow, Aric intervened, leaping into action with the grace of a seasoned predator. Instead of attacking Tygas, the wolf master turned his focus towards Aero, the young human apprentice. The sudden shift caught Aero off guard, forcing him into a defensive stance as he desperately attempted to block Aric's lightning-fast strikes.

Despite Aero's valiant efforts, Aric's skill proved overwhelming. The wolf master broke through his defenses, delivering a non-fatal blow to his chest. Aero winced, feeling the sting of the slice against his skin, expecting the finishing blow to follow. But it never came.

Aric, seemingly unaffected by Aero's presence, directed his words to Tygas, his gaze locked on his fellow master assassin. "We are masters, Tygas," he declared, his voice resonating with a mix of respect and determination. "Dueling apprentices is beneath us. Let us settle this ourselves."

Tygas hesitated, his gaze shifting between Vespera, who now crawled away from the fray, and his own wounded apprentice. Reluctantly, he relented, allowing Vespera to escape his grasp. Aric mirrored his actions, stepping away from Aero as the two masters circled each other, the weight of their skills and the fate of their orders hanging in the balance.

The clash of steel reverberated through the cavern as Tygas and Aric engaged in a relentless duel. Aric, the seasoned wolf master, pressed the offensive with relentless determination, wielding his double-bladed spear to continuously pressure Tygas. Each strike, each feint, aimed to push Tygas onto the defensive. Sweat glistened on Tygas' brow as he fought to hold his ground, his well-worn broadsword dancing with desperate precision.

Meanwhile, Vespera, the fierce vixen, faced off against Aero, her eyes burning with a mix of fury and anticipation. Her voice dripped with malice as she bared her fangs, taunting him with the promise of a gruesome demise. "I'm going to enjoy gutting you like a fish," she snarled, her voice laced with sinister delight.

Aero responded with a dry laugh, his confidence unshaken. He took on a fencing stance, his sharp rapier gleaming in the dim light of the cavern. "You should be worried, my dear," he retorted, a hint of arrogance tainting his voice. "I've bested my own master in combat, and he couldn't even break my stance. You don't stand a chance."

The two apprentices circled each other, the tension palpable. When their blades finally clashed, it was like a deadly dance, a symphony of lethal precision. Vespera's strategy became apparent as she staggered her attacks, swinging with one sickle before swiftly following up with the other. Each clash against Aero's rapier had a rhythmic quality, a deadly cadence that tested his reflexes and adaptability. Her relentless aggression unsettled him, for he had never before dueled against a foe wielding two weapons. Nevertheless, he pressed on, utilizing the agility and finesse of his rapier to create distance and exploit direct striking opportunities.

Vespera, on the other hand, used her dominant paw's sickle to deflect Aero's strikes, relying on her less dominant paw to swiftly counter with her own vicious attacks. The apprentices' skills and styles matched each other blow for blow, their movements fluid and precise.

As the battle raged on, it became clear that Tygas was tiring, his struggle against Aric's relentless assault taking its toll. Each parry became more difficult, each defensive move an uphill battle. The wolf master's experience and strength were overwhelming, pushing the human to his limits. But despite the fatigue that gnawed at his muscles, Tygas refused to relent, his determination driving him to fight on.

Aric, the seasoned wolf master, twirled his spear with a flourish, spinning it faster and faster as he closed in on Tygas. The human master struggled to anticipate the spear's movements, unable to read where the deadly tip would strike next. In a swift and precise motion, Aric delivered a piercing blow to Tygas' shoulder, eliciting a cry of pain from the human assassin. Tygas stumbled backward, instinctively clutching his wounded shoulder, his hand stained crimson with his own blood. Exhausted and weakened, Tygas sank to one knee, his breath ragged.

Aric, smirking at Tygas' fatigue, taunted him about his weariness, remarking “Is that all you have left Master Tygas? I expect more from a master from the order. One doesn't reach that rank by being a slouch."

Ignoring Aric's jibe, Tygas called out to Aero, “Boy! Fall back on me!" his voice strained yet determined. The human apprentice deflected a near-fatal blow from Vespera, momentarily pushing her back before rushing to Tygas' side. Tygas gripped Aero's arm, drawing him close, and whispered in a voice barely audible even to the keen ears of the animal assassins.

“This is where we go our separate ways Aero. This isn't a fight we can win. You need to save yourself while you still can."

Aero shook his head defiantly saying, “No. I told you before we live, fight, and die together. We can beat them master! Let me take the master while you quickly dispatch the vixen. I can last long enough for you to kill her, then we can both take down the wolf!" Tygas gave a tired sigh and replied, “Like Arevidi said in his letter, we're the last of the order. If we both die here then everything was in vain. You need to survive so the order has a future. Don't let it die here in this cave."

Aero's eyes welled with sadness, his urge to argue and press on as a team warring with the respect he held for his master's wisdom.

“I'm proud of you. You're a fine assassin and there's no other I'd chose to continue our legacy." Then with a heavy heart, Tygas handed over his hidden blades and the well-worn broadsword that had accompanied him through countless battles.

“Live. Fight. Reclaim what was lost." Tygas said while flashing a reassuring smile. Aero, though sorrowful, composed himself and helped his weary master rise once more. Aric observed the exhausted assassins, their determination shining through their worn bodies, and expressed his respect for their willingness to continue the fight.

“They say human willpower is its own special ability, and after today I believe it. You two have shown great fortitude on the battlefield . . . Yet this can not continue. You both are exhausted and far more injured than we are. Reconsider my proposal. The Animalia Protectorate is humane and just. You two will receive fair treatment if you submit."

Defying his words, both human assassins surged forward, driven by a mix of courage and desperation. The animal assassins braced themselves for the anticipated attacks, but were caught off guard when the humans abruptly switched targets. Tygas unsheathed a hidden dagger, swiftly shifting his focus to Vespera, while Aero charged toward Aric, wielding both his rapier and Tygas' broadsword.

Tygas lunged at Vespera, evading a spinning slash with deft footwork. Aero, on the other hand, charged at Aric with an awkward but determined dual-sword assault. Aric, caught off balance, attempted to impede Aero's advance with his spear, only to be surprised when the agile apprentice somersaulted over him, slicing across his back in the process. The sudden pain disrupted Aric's focus, causing him to drop his spear.

With the opening created, Aero swiftly made his way toward the chamber's exit, while Tygas deflected another attack before skillfully disarming Vespera of her sickles. With Vespera weaponless, Tygas seized the opportunity, pressing his dagger against her neck, his voice commanding as he shouted for Aero to run and seal the entrance. Aero hesitated, torn between his loyalty to his master and his own survival, but Tygas's urgent plea compelled him to make his escape.

As Aero reluctantly headed for the exit, ensuring the stone door closed behind him, Tygas remained behind, wounded and alone, facing both animal assassins. With Vespera held captive, her life hanging in the balance, Tygas braced himself for the impending clash, aware that his chances of survival were slim. Yet, in the face of overwhelming odds, the human assassin stood his ground, determined to protect his apprentice and the secrets hidden within the artifact chamber.

Aric rose to his feet, disappointment etched on his face as he gazed at Tygas. The wolf assassin spoke in a disapproving tone, his words laced with confidence, "In your weakened state, I could easily free my apprentice and end you before you can even draw your blade across her neck." Tygas, undeterred, responded by pressing the blade deeper into Vespera's neck, drawing a small bead of blood.

Flexing his grip on his spear, Aric asserted that he didn't even need to take action, as Tygas would soon succumb to his blood loss. Tygas acknowledged the truth of Aric's words, saying, "I know, but this isn't my fight to win."

Aric informed Tygas that Aero would not escape. The cave's lower exits were blocked, and with the presence of guards and soldiers, he would be forced upwards, stranded on the mountain peak. Tygas's vision blurred, his hearing fading, and his grip on Vespera loosened. Sensing the opportunity, the vixen broke free from his weakened grasp, swiftly snatching his dagger and plunging it into his chest. Tygas's eyes widened in shock, his life fading away after the brutal attack.

Aric, struck with anger at the death of his adversary, chastised Vespera for her rash actions, expressing his disappointment in her lack of judgment and bloodthirst. He commented that her choices had brought them no closer to their goals. In a fiery retort, Vespera argued back, berating Aric for his needless compassion and claiming that the entire confrontation could have been avoided if they had simply seized the artifact when it was first unearthed.

The master wolf assassin, unfazed by Vespera's outburst, ignored her ill-tempered words and knelt down beside Tygas. He performed solemn prayer rites for his fallen opponent, offering hopes for his soul to find peace. Vespera, gripping the bloodstained dagger tightly in anger, stormed out of the chamber, disgusted with her master for what she perceived as an act of debasing mercy. Determined and driven by vengeance, she caught Aero's scent and sensed his ascent further up the mountain. Her lips curled into a sinister smile as she vowed to kill him, just as she had done to his master.

Chapter 6

Aero raced through the corridors, his movements swift and precise, slicing and slashing through any animal soldiers in his path. The agility of an assassin granted him an advantage against the less nimble forces. He weaved through their attacks effortlessly, vaulting over obstacles with ease. Although he had discovered that the lower exit was blocked, he held onto the hope of finding an alternate route higher up.

He came upon a corridor with natural light at the end and got excited. He ran through it and found himself on a small plateau leading to the steep drop-off of the mountain. As he cursed his luck, Vespera appeared, silently taunting him as she tossed his master's bloody dagger into the snow. No words were exchanged, but Aero knew the truth—Tygas was dead. A mix of powerful emotions surged through him, accompanied by hot tears streaming down his face.

Vespera reveled in Aero's sorrow, eagerly adopting an offensive stance. The human apprentice, driven by grief and anger, met her aggression with his own stance, and the two engaged in combat once again. Swift and skilled, Vespera swiftly gained the upper hand as Aero was not proficient in dual wielding. Desperate to attack and avenge his master, Aero could only manage weak and tired blocks. Vespera skillfully dodged one of Aero's slashes and delivered a deadly counterattack to his chest, leaving behind a bleeding cut that drained his energy further.

Finally, Aric emerged onto the mountaintop and commanded Vespera to stand down. Growling, the vixen seemed to relent. Aric approached Aero slowly, trying to calm him down and show empathy. The wolf assassin sensed the fear and anger emanating from the young human, genuinely wanting to offer assistance. He apologized sincerely for Tygas's demise and assured Aero that the fighting was over.

“We are done young apprentice. There is no reason for any of us to fight anymore. Please. Sheathe your weapons and come with me."

Aric asked Aero to come closer, but the apprentice was too afraid to comply.

Aero stepped back, retreating until he reached the very edge of the cliff. Aric urgently urged him not to consider jumping, as the height would be a death sentence. Aero appeared to listen, swayed by the calm yet authoritative voice of the wolf. He took a few small steps forward. However, Vespera's impatience and fury overcame her once again. She dashed towards Aero, determined to kill him and seize the necklace. Reacting swiftly, the human apprentice turned and leaped off the edge.

Aric shouted in dismay, rushing towards the cliff's edge in a desperate attempt to see if Aero had fallen into the water below. To his astonishment, there was no sign of the young assassin. At such a height, they should have been able to witness his descent for nearly a minute, but there was nothing. It was as if he had vanished into thin air. Vespera remarked disdainfully that jumping was the coward's way out, but Aric's anger flared towards her. He snapped at her to leave and search the bottom for any sign of Aero's fate, his tone commanding and humbling her instantly. Frightened by the consequences she would face for her failures, Vespera quickly scurried away.

Aric remained at the cliff's edge for a while, lamenting the turn of events. He had hoped that both assassins could have been captured alive, but fate had dealt them a different hand.

ONE WEEK LATER

Aric sat alone in his office at the Great Burrow, surrounded by the quiet hum of administrative tasks. His gaze wandered from the training reports he was filling out, his mind consumed by thoughts of Aero, the missing apprentice. It had been a grueling week, tirelessly searching for both Aero and the elusive artifact. Despite calling upon the best trackers in the Animalia Protectorate, their efforts had hit a dead end. The trail had vanished into thin air, leaving them with no more leads to pursue.

The strain of the search and the weight of conflicting ideologies had taken its toll on Aric and Vespera's relationship. Vespera, driven by her fear of punishment, had actively avoided her master, while Aric had sought solace in the administrative responsibilities that kept him occupied. As he sat there, pen in hand, his mind wandered from the paperwork to the well-being of the young apprentice.

Aric's concern for Aero ran deep. He knew all too well the pain and loss that came from the clash between humans and animals. Vespera's own tragic story mirrored that of Aero's potential fate. Her parents had fallen victim to a forceful human relocation effort, fighting back against the encroachment on their home. The humans, driven by their own agendas, had taken their lives and left the young vixen to face the world alone. It was Aric who had found her, offering her a chance at a new life within the Protectorate, training her in the ways of their order. Yet, he couldn't help but lament how her deep-seated hatred had at times clouded her judgment.

Aric firmly believed that cooperation and understanding were not futile aspirations, but rather a path that needed to be forged. He wasn't sure why but he wanted to protect Aero from the fate that had befallen Vespera's parents, to spare him from the cycle of hatred and violence that plagued their world. Perhaps he was an old fool, still clinging onto unrealistic ideals, but he could dream!

Aric's thoughts were interrupted by a soft knock on his office door. Startled, he looked up to see a familiar face peering in. It was Warren, a rabbit and a member of the Protectorate Council. Aric and Warren had trained together as rookies and had forged a strong bond over the years.

Warren entered the office, his ears perked up with curiosity. "Aric, my old friend, what brings you to the depths of paperwork and solitude? I expected to find you out in the field, not hidden away in your office."

Aric let out a weary sigh, his tired eyes meeting Warren's gaze. "Warren, it's good to see you. It's been a trying week, I must admit. The search for the boy and the artifact has taken its toll on me. And Vespera's attitude... it hasn't made things any easier."

Warren nodded sympathetically, understanding the weight of the situation. "I can only imagine, my friend. But remember, you're doing an excellent job with Vespera. I still recall my first apprentice, always giving me a headache. It's part of the process, Aric. Just imagine once she's become a master and her apprentice gives her woes haha!"

Aric managed a faint smile, appreciating Warren's words of encouragement. "Thank you, Warren. Your support means a lot. Sometimes, I worry if I'm doing enough for her."

Warren leaned closer, placing a comforting paw on Aric's shoulder. "You're doing more than enough, Aric. Remember, we all have our own journeys to navigate. Vespera will find her way, just as you did yourself way back when. Trust in the training and guidance you've given her."

As Aric listened to Warren's words, a sense of relief washed over him. The burden seemed a little lighter, and he felt renewed determination. However, Warren's next words caught him off guard.

"Oh, by the way," Warren continued, his tone shifting to something more lighthearted. "You're hearing this early but I have some interesting news. You know? From Master to Master. A human senator is actually coming to visit our region. Can you believe it? The first human to do so in ages!"

Aric's interest was piqued. "A human senator? That's unexpected. What brings them here?"

Warren shrugged, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "Who knows, my friend? Politics and curiosity, perhaps. But that's not all. The Avenshire parliament has recently passed a new law specifically targeting human assassins operating in their territory. Raids are being conducted, and rumor has it that even the grand master himself is on the run."

Aric's brows furrowed in confusion. "Why would the human government turn against the assassins there? They've got a long and storied history of animal oppression."

Warren shrugged once more, his expression nonchalant. "Ah, Aric, sometimes it's best not to think too hard about the politics of it. They have their own agendas, and we have ours. Let them play their games while we focus on what truly matters."

Aric nodded, still perplexed by the news but taking Warren's advice to heart. He closed the training reports and tidied up his desk. "You're right, Warren. Too much thought is bad for my health hehehe. I think some fresh air in town will do me good. Thank you for checking in on me."

Warren grinned, giving Aric a playful nudge. "Anytime, my friend. Remember, you're not alone in this. We're here for each other. Take care, and don't let the weight of the world bring you down."

With a renewed sense of purpose, Aric bid farewell to Warren and made his way out of the office. As he stepped outside, he took a deep breath, feeling the cool air brush against his fur. The weight of the search and Vespera's defiance still lingered, but he knew that he had the strength and support to carry on.

RA'KASHA CATHEDRAL

Father Samuel, a domestic breed feline priest, sat outside the Cathedral in Ra'Kasha, sipping his cup of tea as the early morning sun cast a gentle glow on the surroundings. The priest observed the few animals going about their business, exchanging friendly waves with those who passed by. It was a serene moment, a respite from the chaos that often engulfed their lives.

Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from within the church, jolting Father Samuel from his peaceful reverie. Concern etched across his face, he hurried inside to investigate the source of the disturbance. As he reached the altar, his eyes widened in disbelief. There, before him, lay a wounded and drenched Aero, water and blood still dripping from his soaked form. The young assassin, attempting to stand, faltered and collapsed, losing consciousness.

Reacting swiftly, Father Samuel gently gathered the injured Aero into his arms, his feline strength providing a tender support. With great care, he carried the weakened assassin to one of the church's back rooms, laying him down on a soft cot. The priest's heart filled with compassion as he surveyed the scars that adorned Aero's young body, evidence of a life burdened with violence and hardship beyond his years.

As Father Samuel tended to Aero's wounds, his mind drifted to the friendships he had formed with both Tygas and the young apprentice. Despite their differences, they had found common ground, and he believed in the possibility of peace between humans and animals. The feline priest held on to hope, cherishing the memories of the moments shared with Tygas and Aero, where their camaraderie transcended the boundaries imposed by society.

Father Samuel's paws moved with practiced gentleness, cleaning and dressing Aero's injuries, his touch a comforting presence amidst the pain. The flickering candlelight cast a warm glow on the room, and the priest offered silent prayers for the young assassin's swift recovery. Deep within his heart, he longed for a future where understanding and harmony would prevail, where humans and animals could coexist in peace.

As he sat by Aero's side, tending to his wounds, Father Samuel knew that his work was not only physical but also spiritual. He whispered words of solace and healing, hoping that in the stillness of the room, the wounded assassin would find some measure of peace and strength to face the challenges that lay ahead.

The young apprentice murmured and shifted sluggishly. He was very much alive, but would be down for some time. The feline priest made himself comfortable and sat besides Aero. He'd done all he could do and now it was time for the assassin to do his part and recover.

A few hours had passed, and Father Samuel stirred from his slumber, finding Aero's bed empty. Concerned, he quickly scanned the church, his gaze falling upon the sight of the wounded assassin slowly making his way towards the exit. Father Samuel hurried over, his voice filled with worry.

"Wait, Aero! You shouldn't be moving in your condition," the feline priest called out, his concern evident in his voice.

Aero's gaze was heavy with sadness as he turned to face Father Samuel. "Father, I appreciate your kindness, but I don't belong in a church. I should find somewhere else to rest," he replied softly.

Father Samuel reached out a comforting hand, gently placing it on Aero's shoulder. "Aero, my son, all are welcome in the church. It is a place of refuge and solace. You are no exception," he reassured him.

With a sigh, Aero reluctantly nodded, allowing the feline priest to guide him towards the church's kitchen. Father Samuel busied himself, preparing a warm stew, his hands working with practiced ease. As the aroma filled the air, he turned to Aero, his voice filled with gentle concern.

"Now, tell me, my young friend. What happened? What has brought you to this point?" Father Samuel asked, his eyes filled with empathy.

Aero's gaze lowered, the weight of his recent experiences evident in his expression. He recounted the tale to Father Samuel—the compromised order, the discovery of the artifact, and the heart-wrenching loss of Tygas. The feline priest listened attentively, offering comforting words and a sympathetic ear.

Once Aero finished sharing his story, Father Samuel leaned back, his eyes meeting Aero's. "What do you plan to do now, Aero? Where will your path lead you?" he inquired gently.

Aero hesitated, his mind filled with uncertainty. "I cannot return to Avenshire, not with Rau's new order hunting me down. But I don't know where to go or what to do," he confessed, his voice tinged with sadness.

Understanding the gravity of Aero's situation, Father Samuel offered him a reassuring smile. "Aero, my young friend, your life is yours to live. It is time to forge your own path. Do not let the shadows of the past define your future," he advised, his words carrying a quiet strength.

As Father Samuel rose to his feet, he quickly disappeared from sight, returning with a neatly bundled package containing Aero's equipment. "I took the liberty of cleaning your cloak and equipment. Can't ask a man to face the world unprepared," he said, handing the bundle to the young assassin.

Gratitude washed over Aero as he swiftly donned his gear, feeling the weight of purpose settle upon his shoulders. With a heartfelt thank you and a warm embrace, he bid farewell to Father Samuel.

As Aero flipped up his hood, his features concealed, he locked eyes with the feline priest one last time. In that silent exchange, understanding passed between them, a shared understanding of the path that lay ahead.

With a nod, Aero stealthily slipped out into the snowy city, leaving behind the warmth and sanctuary of the church. But he carried with him the lessons learned, the compassion of Father Samuel, and a renewed determination to carve his own destiny.

Chapter 7

The barren wastelands of Ra'Kasha echoed with the sounds of construction, as a group of human workers labored to build houses in the remote territory. The human foreman barked orders, his voice laced with frustration, urging his workers to move faster and cease their slacking. Little did they know that they were being silently stalked by Vespera, the vixen assassin who took pleasure in sabotaging Avenshire's expansion efforts.

The human foreman studied the plans in his hands, his brow furrowing with concern. He turned to one of the workers, issuing an order to dig a larger foundation, making room for animals of all sizes. Intrigued by this unexpected development, Vespera listened intently, eavesdropping on their conversation. The worker, however, grumbled in response, complaining about the need to head into town soon to replenish their supplies.

The human foreman's frustration was palpable, but he reluctantly agreed to allow the workers a break. Just as they began to relax, Vespera emerged from her hiding spot, launching an ambush on the unsuspecting workers.

“Enough! You dare trespass in Animalia Protectorate territory!? Leave immediately, or I won't hesitate to end you all. That will be your only mercy!"

Her voice rang out with anger and authority as she proclaimed their trespassing on Animalia Protectorate territory, threatening dire consequences if they refused to leave.

Confusion and murmurs filled the air as the human workers struggled to comprehend her words. The foreman, determined to resolve the situation, attempted to approach Vespera, only to have her swiftly draw her sickle and close the distance between them. With the foreman at blade point, Vespera warned him to choose his next actions carefully.

Though shaken, the foreman persisted, vehemently asserting that they had obtained permission from the Ra'Kashan government to build in the area.

“Y-You're insane! We have every right to be here! We have permission from your fuzzies to build here! This is a cooperative project between Avenshire and Ra'Kasha! A sort of olive branch affair." Vespera pressed the blade a little harder against the foreman's neck saying, “Oh how much I despise liars."

“L-Liar?! Here! This should clear everything up!" The foreman produced a work order as evidence and Vespera snatched it with fury.

The vixen inspected the document, her scowl deepening. It appeared genuine, and the humans seemed to be causing no harm. She released the foreman, who wore a smug smile, taunting her that she had been lucky their protectors hadn't witnessed the encounter, or she would have faced dire consequences.

“Your 'protectors' are of no concern to me. You humans are weak and oh so easy to slice through."

However, the foreman laughed, asking, "Who said anything about humans?" In that moment, two hooded animal assassins emerged from the workers' tents, shocking Vespera. She demanded to know why members of the Protectorate were consorting with the enemy.

One of the assassins spoke in the secretive language of animals, rendering their conversation incomprehensible to the humans.

“You are interfering with high-level Protectorate business. Leave now, or face the consequences." The ultimatum was sharp and impactful: leave immediately or face swift consequences. Both assassins brandished their weapons, making it clear that they meant business.

For a fleeting moment, Vespera considered the audacious idea of taking on both assassins, but the thought quickly vanished. It would be suicide.

“Keep your silence about this encounter. Two minutes to clear the area. And mark well young apprentice. What you have done today? You will answer for it, this is not over. Now scurry back to the Great Burrow. I will see to you later."

Without hesitation, Vespera turned and sprinted in the direction she had come, her heart pounding with adrenaline. She pushed herself harder than she had ever run before, knowing that her life depended on it. As she vanished into the distance, the human foreman turned to the assassins, voicing his concern about the security breach.

“You two had one job! How could you let a breach like this happen, let alone one of your own!!"

“Worry not about the apprentice. This was an inconsequential event. You just focus on your job. I would hate to explain to your superiors why you failed to meet the timeline."

With that, the two animal assassins returned to their large tent, leaving the human foreman to nervously rally his team and get them back on track. The construction resumed, the workers now acutely aware that there was more at stake than just the completion of their project.

Chapter 8

Vespera raced through the bustling Ra'Kasha town square, fear and unease gripping her tightly. In her panicked state, she collided with Aric, who was enjoying a leisurely stroll through the market. Surprised to see his apprentice careening towards him, Aric instinctively caught her, his senses picking up on her overwhelming fear. Concerned, he asked if she was alright.

Vespera quickly composed herself, masking her emotions, and lied to Aric, claiming that a fellow assassin had played a nasty prank on her. Aric, uncertain of the truth but aware of the twisted sense of humor among their peers, brushed off her strange behavior and invited her to walk back to the castle with him. He expected her to decline, knowing her fiercely independent nature, but to his surprise, she immediately agreed. Aric smiled, believing that she had overcome her earlier emotional outburst.

As they walked side by side, Aric inquired about Vespera's activities during the past week. She half-lied, mentioning that she had been tracking suspicious human movements in the region. When Aric asked if she had uncovered anything significant, Vespera feigned disappointment, claiming she had found nothing concrete. Though Aric was a seasoned warrior, his keen senses picked up on the subtle irregularities in her breathing and heightened heart rate. He was about to probe further when a thought crossed his mind, diverting his line of questioning. He speculated that Vespera might be hiding a potential romantic involvement, a notion that embarrassed him.

Swiftly changing the subject, he mentioned that he had been contemplating ways to find Aero and the artifact. Intrigued, Vespera inquired about his ideas, but Aric playfully told her it was a secret and that she would find out after the evening's general meeting. Irritated, Vespera huffed in annoyance, and Aric chuckled in a fatherly manner.

Upon reaching the Great Burrow, the two entered the castle to pass the time until their scheduled meeting. They parted ways for the moment, with Vespera heading towards the training grounds and Aric making his way to the library. Unbeknownst to them, perched atop a neighboring building, a hooded figure observed their entrance, casting an enigmatic gaze upon them.

The meeting hall was filled with a multitude of animals, eagerly awaiting the start of the gathering. Among them stood Aric and Vespera, their presence blending in with the diverse assembly. Vespera turned to Aric, her curiosity piqued, and inquired about the purpose of the meeting. Aric replied that he believed it concerned the impending visit of a human senator. The notion of a human official coming to their region intrigued her, but she didn't dwell on it for long.

As the members of the Protectorate council entered the hall, taking their seats on the elevated platform, a sense of solemnity filled the air. The council comprised three predator animals and three prey animals, their leadership structure differing from the human order's single master system. They preferred sharing the burden of leadership. A tiger master addressed the gathered assassins, informing them that tonight's meeting would be brief. Confirming the rumors, he revealed that the human senator's visit was indeed taking place and that the Avenshire government had requested the Protectorate to oversee security.

This request puzzled many in attendance, but a sheep council member explained that it had been requested by the senator himself. The sheep elaborated, sharing that Regent Rau had initiated a purge of the human assassin order, causing discontent among the surviving members. The female sheep speculated that any remaining human assassins might attempt to target the senator, necessitating heightened vigilance from the Protectorate. Some assassins murmured about what or who would replace the human order, but another council member dismissed those concerns, assuring them that the Regent himself would address the matter during the event in three days' time.

Next to speak was Warren, commanding the attention of the assembly. He announced that assignments would be given in the coming days, emphasizing that everyone had a role to play in ensuring the success of the occasion. Warren reiterated the importance of cooperation between humans and animals, despite their differences. However, his words carried a weight that was not lost on Vespera. Laden with deadly intent, they resonated deep within her, even amidst the crowd of diverse species. Their gazes locked briefly, sending a chill down her spine. As the meeting concluded, Vespera swiftly departed, leaving Aric to observe her hasty exit. He playfully attributed her behavior to a desire to meet her lover and shook his head in amusement before making his way towards the council.

Warren and the other council members warmly welcomed Aric, inquiring about his well-being. Aric courteously replied in the affirmative and expressed his curiosity regarding his assignment. Warren chuckled, teasing him about his eagerness, but eventually divulged that both Aric and Vespera would be assigned to a high, stealthy position to guard one of the sections near the senator. Aric then questioned if Vespera could handle the task alone, given her exceptional skills in stealth and stalking. However, Warren swiftly dismissed the notion, stating that no apprentices would handle assignments by themselves while the human Regent was present in the region. The Protectorate could not afford any mistakes, especially with the artifact still missing.

Though Warren did not explicitly mention their recent mishap at Mount See'vash, Aric knew that his words alluded to it. Respectfully bowing his head, Aric turned to leave but paused when the tiger master issued a warning, urging him to closely monitor his apprentice. The tiger master cautioned that while Vespera was highly skilled, she was also ill-tempered and prone to endangering herself and the order. Aric staunchly defended Vespera, acknowledging that she may succumb to her temper at times, but she remained an exceptional assassin who held the order's principles dear.

The sheep master then posed a thought-provoking question to Aric, inquiring how Vespera would react if the order's principles were to change. Would she adapt or stand in the way of progress? Stunned by the query, Aric hesitated to respond. The sheep master nodded knowingly, dismissing Aric with a reminder to rest, assuring him that they would summon him when the time was right. With another respectful bow, Aric exited the meeting hall.

Left behind, the remaining council members deliberated on Vespera's earlier breach. They had already been informed by the field assassins, and they now had the issue of how to address it.

The tiger master insisted that she was a liability that needed to be addressed promptly. He asserted that even if she remained silent, she would undoubtedly attempt to pry further into forbidden territory. The sheep master concurred, deeming it best to sever the wayward cord now while their abilities were still sharp.

Warren, torn by his close relationship with both Aric and Vespera, displayed hesitation. Acknowledging his bias, he refused to agree to her demise in good conscience. Instead, he proposed sending her away and assigning Aric a new apprentice. The suggestion was for Vespera to train in the jungle regions of Um'Dah'La, where ample human activity would keep her bloodlust in check and occupy her mind.

After careful consideration, the council reached a consensus, agreeing to the plan. The tiger master, still not convinced completely, said, “Let us hope your attachment to Aric's apprentice does not unravel what we have worked towards Warren." The rabbit council member acknowledged the concerns with a nod but said nothing else as he too left.

Chapter 10

The day had finally arrived. The Protectorate had received word that the Regent's personal security detail had arrived, and the Regent himself would be arriving by carriage within the next hour. Aric and Vespera stood outside the castle, awaiting the final signal to take their positions. Aric remained calm and composed, not particularly concerned about the Regent or his speech. Politics didn't interest the wolf master much.

On the other hand, Vespera was filled with nervous anticipation. Ever since she discovered that the speech would take place at the construction site she had infiltrated before, a sense of foreboding had settled within her. Sensing her unease, Aric awkwardly tried to address it, mistakenly assuming that she was preoccupied with thoughts of her lover. Aric spoke, breaking the silence, "Vespera, you know that I'll always support you, right?" Vespera was taken aback by Aric's sudden shift in conversation, responding with confusion, "Yes, master? I know."

Aric nodded, realizing he needed to find the right words to convey his meaning. He hadn't expected to have such an intimate conversation with his apprentice. He continued, "Good, good. I just want you to know that whether it's Protectorate business or more... personal matters, I'll stand by whatever you do." Vespera's ears flushed with embarrassment as she cautiously asked, "Um, master, what is this about?"

Clearing his throat, Aric replied, "Well, you're not a kit anymore, and I know that you've probably been... feeling attracted to others..." Before he could finish his sentence, Vespera interrupted with a mix of embarrassment and defensiveness, "Master! I am not seeing anyone!" Her defensive response and posture indicated that Aric had struck a nerve. Understanding that she would share about her personal matters in due time, Aric raised his paws and reassured her that he was only asking out of concern. Vespera shook her head, desperately attempting to change the subject, "Look, our guests have arrived."

Assassins of various species watched in anticipation as Rau's personal security team stepped out of the carriage. Hushed remarks circulated about how they resembled the old assassins, but there was something immediately distinct about them. In awe, Vespera exclaimed, "They're a human and animal unit?" Aric scratched his chin curiously, slightly surprised by the extent of human and animal cooperation on display. While he always believed such cooperation was possible, seeing them fight together as a cohesive unit was unexpected.

The mixed security team paid no heed to the stares as they walked past everyone and entered the castle. They were expected, and no Protectorate assassin impeded their progress. As Rau's group made their way inside, a loud bell tolled from the castle, signaling that it was time for the various groups to assume their positions. Aric and Vespera then made their way to their assigned spot—a snowy ridge above where Rau would be delivering his speech.

Aric and Vespera stood at their assigned posts on the snowy ridge, overlooking the gathering below. Other Protectorate assassins were positioned around them, and Rau's personal security detail was within close proximity. The security seemed impenetrable, allowing the master and apprentice to relax somewhat. They engaged in casual conversation, passing the time until the moment of the Regent's appearance.

Suddenly, Regent Rau emerged from his personal tent. He was a young man, in his thirties, much younger than any previous human regent. Though his body language displayed nervousness, he appeared determined to be there and deliver his speech. The audience consisted of the Protectorate council, Ra'Kasha's local parliament, and a few esteemed guests privileged enough to witness the occasion.

As the human Regent ascended the platform, he wasted no time and began his address, "Distinguished guests! First and foremost, I express my gratitude for your warm reception and the opportunity to address you today. To say that the path leading to this moment has been filled with challenges would be an understatement. Yet, I have embraced these trials and tribulations, firmly believing in the urgent need to foster deeper cooperation between humans and the animalia. Our reasons for conflict should not define the entirety of our existence as peoples!" Aric quietly complimented the human's oratory skills, then turned to Vespera, asking for her thoughts.

The vixen shrugged, giving a noncommittal response. Her attention, however, was suddenly captured by a figure on the opposing ridge. Though they were too far away to discern clearly, she caught a glimpse of green. Urgently, she asked Aric if he could see anything across the ridge. The wolf master squinted his eyes, but he shook his head, unable to perceive anything. Curious, Aric inquired about what Vespera had seen, but she grew defensive once again, brushing it off as a trick of the snow. Aric remained unconvinced but refocused his attention on Rau's speech.

The Regent continued, his voice carrying conviction, "I have often been asked why I relentlessly pursue this cause. People have accused me of being a Ra'Kashan spy or a plant. 'Why would you dismantle the Hidden Hand, Rau? Why destroy your own kind?' To them, I pose a question: Would your own kin kill and displace you for their selfish agendas? The Hidden Hand of Avenshire was an organized group of thugs and bullies, vile heathens who amassed power to the point where our own government had to bow to their whims. Parents lived in constant fear of their children being snatched and indoctrinated, businesses yielded to the order's demands, and elected officials cowered, silenced by the fear of death for holding differing opinions. This is not a way to live, be it as a human or an animal. That is why I stand before you today, in the hopes of repairing our fractured relationship and ushering in a new era of prosperity!"

The animalia crowd murmured among themselves, a mix of anticipation and unease filling the air. Rau acknowledged their sentiments, remarking, "I understand your apprehension. It is easy to make grand promises, but true commitment is proven through action! Allow me to present this gift, a symbol of Avenshire's sincerity and unwavering dedication to a fruitful partnership." All eyes were fixed on Rau's aide as they produced a small wooden box. Gasps escaped from a few members of the Protectorate council, and even Aric couldn't help but whisper, "Is that...?"

Rau smiled, accepting the box, and confirmed, "Indeed, your eyes do not deceive you! This is the Rift Breaker, your ancestral artifact stolen by Arevidi and his despicable cohorts. The new order has been actively rooting out Arevidi's allies and securing what rightfully belongs to you. I humbly request that you accept this as a token of our sincerity and genuine commitment to a fruitful partnership."

A sheep council member stood up, beaming with warmth as she approached to receive the artifact. However, as she drew nearer, the entire area was engulfed in a swirling cloud of green smoke. The smoke dissipated with a violent force, revealing Aero standing between Rau and the Protectorate council. Shock rippled through the crowd, but the human assassin had eyes only for Rau. Aero's emerald necklace glowed ominously as he brandished his rapier, his voice laced with a chilling intensity, "At long last, you reveal yourself, worm... Are you prepared to face your demise?"

Rau recoiled in fear as the human assassin, Aero, boldly approached. Rau's personal assassins encircled him, weapons at the ready, but Aero regarded them with cold indifference. "I have no quarrel with you. Stand aside and let me fulfill my duty," Aero declared. One of Rau's warriors pointed his sword at Aero and cautioned, "Aero Agravias, former apprentice of Tygas, and a remnant of Arevidi's order. You are hereby under arrest. For your own safety, sheathe your weapons, relinquish the artifact, and come with us peacefully. This is not a battle you can hope to win."

Aero remained silent, disappearing in a puff of green smoke. In the blink of an eye, he reappeared in front of the commanding warrior and swiftly severed his head with a single stroke of Tygas' broadsword. Before anyone could react, Aero vanished once more, only to reappear and inflict a fatal wound upon another of Rau's warriors. Chaos erupted as assassins and soldiers alike scrambled to anticipate Aero's next move.

Witnessing the madness unfold, Aric and Vespera were momentarily stunned before snapping back into action. Leaping gracefully from the ridge, they sprinted towards the frenzied Aero. As they ran, Aric insisted that Vespera allow him to take the lead and handle most of the action. Vespera protested, but Aric reminded her of their previous encounter with Aero and the disastrous outcome. Reluctantly, the vixen apprentice agreed, and Aric commanded her to protect Regent Rau and ensure his safety.

Vespera assured Aric that he could count on her, then rushed toward the Regent. Meanwhile, Aric approached the swirling cloud of green smoke where assassins were falling left and right, unable to land a single blow on Aero, creating a sense of pandemonium. Aric even witnessed instances of accidental friendly fire among the confused assassins.

As he drew closer, Aric spotted Aero standing over one of Rau's personal soldiers, slowly driving the tip of his rapier into her stomach, causing her to scream in agony. Aric straightened himself up, took a deep breath, and prepared to confront the troubled human. With composure, Aric called out to Aero, remarking “ Master Tygas would not have condoned the needless torture of his adversaries. Do not taint his legacy like this."

At the sound of Aric's voice, Aero abruptly halted, turning his gaze to the wolf master with anger burning in his eyes. Aero retorted, his voice laced with resentment, “You . . you dare bring up my master as is if you knew him?! You know nothing because if you did, you wouldn't let this sniveling and conniving worm Rau into your kingdom."

Aric acknowledged Aero's anger and frustration but emphasized that killing Rau would not lead to a resolution. Aero erupted in a defiant shout, insisting that it would indeed bring about a better outcome. Aric remained resolute, sternly stating that he would not allow Aero to harm the Regent. Aero screamed in frustration, vowing to harm Aric instead. In an instant, Aero disappeared once again into the billowing smoke, and Aric instinctively assumed a defensive stance, poised to defend himself. Though he couldn't see Aero, he could sense his presence. Aric swiftly maneuvered his spear to deflect a slashing attack as Aero reappeared.

Frustrated by Aric's block, Aero attempted a sneak attack, only to fail in delivering a lethal blow. Aric discerned Aero's pattern and pressed his offensive. Despite Aero's enhanced abilities, he was still an apprentice, and Aric's greater experience pushed him back. Aero's defense tightened, thanks to his newfound teleportation power, but it failed to halt Aric's relentless advance. Amid the intense battle, Aric's attention was drawn to Aero's necklace. The brighter the jewel glowed, the more Aero exerted himself.

Realizing the connection between the necklace's glow and Aero's emotions and physical energy, Aric shifted tactics. He eased off his offensive and commented that fighting would not resolve anything. He pleaded with Aero to cease the violence. As Aric spoke, the necklace dimmed slightly, and Aero grew angrier. Aric astutely observed the link and sheathed his spear, reiterating that he would not fight Aero and acknowledging the pain the apprentice carried. The necklace glowed brighter still as Aero charged at him.

Aric calmly sidestepped and evaded Aero's dual-wielded rapier and Tygas' broadsword. Aero, no longer teleporting, desperately sought to end Aric's resistance, but the wolf master continued speaking calmly and genuinely, expressing concern for the tormented human. He shared how he, too, had experienced anger and pain, emphasizing that the unbridled rage Aero harbored was unsustainable. The necklace's glow began to fade, and Aero's movements slowed.

Barely jogging anymore, Aero made a final futile attempt, aiming for a slashing attack at Aric's neck. Yet, with deftness, Aric disarmed him. Aero screamed in frustration and attempted to pummel Aric with his fists, but Aric caught hold of him. "Let me go! I'll kill you!" Aero cried, his voice tinged with defeat and sorrow. Tears streamed down his face as he weakly struggled against Aric's grip. The wolf master drew Aero close, embracing him warmly, which seemed to drain the fight from the exhausted apprentice. Aero buried his face in Aric's soft fur, crying like a broken child. Incoherently, he babbled about ending Aric, the Protectorate, and Rau, but Aric understood that beneath the bravado, Aero was scared and confused.

After a few more minutes of weeping and feeble resistance, Aero's necklace grew dim, and his knees gave way. Aric held onto him tightly, asking if he was alright. Gently, he laid Aero on the snowy ground, and the exhausted human stared up at him, whispering, "S-so t-tired." Aric tenderly stroked his head and reassured him that it was time to rest, that the battle was over. Aero stirred momentarily, attempting to muster the last remnants of his energy, but it proved futile. Completely drained by the artifact, the human apprentice went limp in Aric's arms.

Chapter 11

The aftermath of Aero's rampage left a stark scene of devastation. Rau's mixed unit had suffered casualties, with eight soldiers killed and three injured. The Protectorate, fortunately, had no casualties, but it raised questions about Aero's motives. At first glance, seeking vengeance as a remnant of Arevidi's order seemed logical, but Aric noticed something peculiar. Aero's focus was solely on Rau and his soldiers, showing no interest in attacking the Protectorate.

The wolf master furrowed his brow, pondering the situation. If Aero had been hiding within Ra'Kasha for the past week, he could have easily wreaked havoc among the ranks of the Protectorate as well. But his targets were specific, raising suspicions of political motivations. Aric sighed, realizing that even a rampaging assassin with a powerful artifact was tangled in the web of politics.

Debates raged on between the two sides, extending well into the night. Eventually, a temporary agreement was reached. Aero would be confined in "The Doghouse," a secure storage room located in the lower section of the Great Burrow Castle. This room was designed to house dangerous precursor artifacts and weapons. It was believed that Aero's powers would be nullified in that environment.

Rau had insisted on removing the artifact from Aero's neck, but the idea was swiftly abandoned when a soldier attempted to do so. A surge of green lightning engulfed the soldier, leading to his immediate demise. No one dared to experiment further after witnessing that incident. Aric watched silently as the unconscious Aero was wheeled away to his new prison, torn between conflicting emotions.

Soon, Vespera joined her master, beaming with excitement. "Look, Master! The Regent gave me this token of his appreciation!" She held up a specially engraved coin, her joy contrasting with Aric's troubled expression. He managed a tired smile and playfully ruffled the vixen's hair. Sensing her master's unease, Vespera asked why he was upset despite their apparent victory. Aric scratched his chin and replied, "There was no victory here today." With that, he walked away, leaving Vespera to ponder his words. Shrugging off the confusion, she followed him back home.

However, there was no respite awaiting them at home. The castle buzzed with activity as everyone hurried to clear out the storage room before Aero regained consciousness. A long line of animals and a few humans extended from the bottom of the castle to the outside courtyard, diligently moving various items. Aric and Vespera joined the line, eager to contribute and expedite the process. Finally, a call came from the front of the line, announcing that the room was all clear.

The crowd began to move as the group escorting Aero passed by. Tension hung in the air, and everyone remained on edge, uncertain of when the human would awaken and whether he would unleash havoc again. However, Aero remained in a deep slumber, not even stirring as he was carried down the stairs and into his newly cleared cell.

The following day proved to be even busier than the previous one. The castle bustled with activity, but this time it was Rau's compliments that filled the air. He was preparing to return to Avenshire, leaving his mixed unit behind. However, a larger group had arrived—a company of over 100 mixed soldiers comprising both humans and animals. Aric observed from a balcony as they marched together, wondering where they would be accommodated. His question was answered when he noticed some assassins leaving the Great Burrow with their belongings.

Curiosity piqued, Aric called down to one of the departing assassins—a canine—and inquired about their destination. The canine replied that they were heading to Avenshire. Apparently, the council and Avenshire parliament had swiftly approved an exchange program overnight. The "mixies," as they were called, would train in Ra'Kasha while the Protectorate members trained in Avenshire.

Aric found it peculiar to shake up the status quo at such a time, but he trusted that the council knew what they were doing. Descending the castle stairs with determination, he wondered if Aero had awakened yet, contemplating the possibility of having a conversation with the human. As Aric approached the doors of the Dog House, two mixies, a human and a wolf, stood guard and refused him entry, stating that no one was allowed to approach the artifact wielder.

Respectfully, Aric asserted his position as the master of the Protectorate and the one who had stopped Aero. He argued that if anyone should see him, it should be him. After a brief exchange, the mixies exchanged glances and reluctantly permitted Aric to pass. Disregarding their stares, the wolf entered the dimly lit chamber. It was a vast room, mostly empty except for a small cot and some furniture left untouched.

Approaching Aero without fear, Aric placed a paw on the human's head. Aero radiated warmth, and his necklace emitted a dim green glow. The wolf master observed the apprentice's steady breathing before leaving the chamber, informing the mixies that he would return periodically to check on Aero. Though the mixies remained silent, Aric knew they had heard him.

Returning to the castle's main foyer, Aric was intercepted by a tiger council member. "Ah, Master Cengali! Good morning to you. Busy day, I presume?" Master Cengali, arms folded within his robe, responded, "Yes, indeed, Aric. Speaking of which, are you busy right now? Some of the council members would like to speak with you."

"Lead the way, Master," Aric replied. Cengali guided him back to the meeting chambers, where only Warren and Leah, the sheep council member, awaited. Aric looked around and asked, "Where is the rest of the council?"

Warren answered, explaining that the other council members were accompanying some of the selected assassins to Avenshire for training. Warren emphasized the importance of ensuring those going to Avenshire had the support of the council. Aric nodded in understanding and then inquired why he had been summoned. Leah responded, informing him that Vespera had been chosen to attend the training sessions in Avenshire as well. The news shocked the wolf master, and he questioned why she had been selected.

Cengali explained that it was due to Vespera's potential as an assassin. "The order is changing rapidly, Aric. We need the new generation to be adaptable and versatile, as we discussed. With the right training, she could become a valuable asset for the future."

Aric remained unconvinced and accused the council of wanting to punish Vespera for her initial failures with Aero. He

proposed that if they sought to assign blame, he should be the one to go to Avenshire in her place. Warren tried to reassure Aric, stating that this was not a punishment and that he had not failed. Warren further explained that they believed it would be beneficial for Vespera, providing her with a change of scenery, new allies, and opportunities to learn new skills. Warren then introduced Vespera's new master, Halcyon, who emerged from the adjacent room.

Halcyon, a spotted leopard, wore a friendly smile, but Aric's instincts warned him that something was amiss. Halcyon waved in a friendly manner and said, "Master Thornsbane, it's a pleasure. I wanted to meet you earlier, but with the Regent's meeting and the artifact chaos, it couldn't be helped." Aric responded cautiously, "Charmed." He then turned back to the council and inquired, "How much time do I have with her?"

Leah answered, stating that Vespera would depart first thing the following morning. She advised Aric to use the remainder of the day to wrap up things and bid farewell. The news devastated the wolf master, but he maintained his composure and respectfully bowed, saying, "It will be done as you command." His tone did not go unnoticed by the council members. Once Aric had left, Halcyon inquired, "Do you think he will truly go through with it?" Warren responded with confidence, affirming that Aric was a good master who knew when it was time to let go. The others remained skeptical but said nothing for the sake of their rabbit colleague.

Aric quickly headed out towards the training grounds in search of his apprentice. He knew he had to rip the bandage off quickly, or he would never be able to do this. The wolf master steeled himself for the hardest thing he had ever had to do. He gathered his courage and stepped out onto the training grounds where Vespera, a lone vixen, was practicing her footwork and sensory skills.

Vespera closed her eyes, focusing on sensing her surroundings, and then swiftly attacked a training dummy as if it had just appeared from thin air. Aric watched her, his courage draining away. He turned to leave and try again later, but Vespera spotted him and waved him over, saying, "Ahh, Master! Care to show me how you blocked Aero's attacks? I'm sure I could figure it out, but it always helps to have a sparring partner."

Aric approached her and with practiced determination, he said, "Come. Follow me." He then turned to leave, and Vespera quickly started after him. The duo walked in silence to the front of the castle, where Vespera once again asked what was going on. Aric took a deep breath and decided to be direct. He told her that she was being sent to Avenshire to train with another unit of assassins and a new master.

Vespera seemed lost in thought for a moment before remarking, "That doesn't sound too bad. Is that it?" Aric was taken aback by her nonchalant attitude. He had expected her to be more upset about leaving. "Well, yes, that's it. You'll be training with a Master Halcyon and undergoing a new regimen developed by the council. You'll most likely have human partners too," he explained.

Vespera smiled and said, "Sounds like fun, actually, and a break from all the snow! I heard Avenshire has beaches there! I've always wanted to go to one! When do I leave?!" As her excitement built, Aric felt his mood souring on the inside. "You leave tomorrow," he said, hoping she would at least feel a little sadness about going. But to his dismay, Vespera bounced on the balls of her feet excitedly, exclaiming, "Hardly enough time to pack all of my trinkets! But I'll make it work! Thank you for the good news, Master!" She then hurried off to pack while Aric stood there, feeling downtrodden.

As Vespera ran towards her quarters, she was stopped by Master Halcyon, who called out to her. "There you are, young one! You certainly can move, can't you?" Vespera apologized to the leopard, saying, "Apologies, Master, I did not see you there." Halcyon chuckled and told her it was alright, asking if she was excited about her trip to Avenshire.

Vespera nodded quickly and replied, "Oh, I've honestly always wanted to go to Avenshire. From paintings I've seen, it looks like a beautiful place!" Halcyon smiled, responding, "Oh yes, it's very nice, lots of beauty to behold there. Oh, I'm sorry, don't let me keep you from preparing. You and I will have plenty of time to get acquainted further." Vespera then realized that Halcyon was her new master and apologized for not realizing it sooner.

Halcyon raised an eyebrow and asked, "Temporary?" Vespera's enthusiasm waned slightly as she questioned, "Yes, temporary, right? I thought that everyone going to train at Avenshire would be returning after a little while, like during the apprentice trials." Halcyon shook his head and said, "No, no, no, young one. This is... a more permanent change. I'm to be your new master for the foreseeable future while you're in Avenshire."

Vespera's expression shifted, and she replied, "Oh... Well, no thank you then. My apologies, but when Master Thornsbane told me about this, I imagined it being something more of a field training exercise. I put in no such request for a new master or permanent location." Halcyon's tone turned slightly stern as he responded, "It wasn't a personal choice or request to be made. The council has decided who will go and who will stay. You will report to the departure grounds tomorrow morning."

Defiance flared up within Vespera, and she retorted, "No, I will not. I know the laws of the order, and master or not, you can't force me to go. I will just go lodge a complaint with the council myself." Vespera turned to leave, but Halcyon swiftly grabbed her, speaking to her in the language of animals. "That would be very unwise, kit." Vespera's eyes nearly bulged out of her head as she realized who was holding her.

"I told you I would deal with you later. Now listen and mark well. The council has decided that you will train in Avenshire before being moved to Um'Dah'La and joining the unit there. There is no room for argument or deviation, understand? I have express permission to end you the second you stray from my orders." Vespera looked around the castle for help but found it chillingly empty. She nodded her head once, and Halcyon slowly released her. "Finish packing. For your sake, you better be ready tomorrow." The leopard turned to leave, leaving Vespera stunned.

Vespera sprinted towards her room, cursing herself for being so afraid of Halcyon. For all she knew, he might not even be as proficient in combat as she was. She shook the thought from her head as she reached her room. She needed a plan. She would not accompany Halcyon anywhere, as it was most likely a death sentence. No, she would escape and forge a new life elsewhere, perhaps even reaching out to another chapter of the Protectorate. She strongly considered asking her actual master, Aric, for help, but she was unsure if she could trust him.

She looked around her room, her eyes settling on her trophy—the dagger of Tygas. Suddenly, an idea struck her. Quickly, she jumped up and stealthily made her way towards the lower regions of the castle, determined to find a way out.

In the dimly lit chamber, all is quiet as Aero rests. His necklace gradually glows brighter and brighter until the light reaches its full strength. The necklace emits a low hum, and finally, Aero awakens. The human is still drained, but he sits up in his cot, surprised to find himself alive after his rampage the day before. He notices water and a piece of bread next to his cot, which he quickly devours.

Aero begins to explore the large prison, searching for any possible means of escape. The construction is solid, but he knows it shouldn't impede his powers. However, as he tries to focus on a familiar location, he realizes that this room somehow suppresses his abilities. "Wonderful," he mutters sarcastically, flopping back onto the cot. Bored, he stares at the ceiling for a moment but then shifts his gaze to the floor, where he notices a tile shifting.

Curiosity piqued, Aero watches intently as Vespera pops her head out from the opening. Their gazes lock briefly before Aero rolls his eyes and leans back in his cot, saying, "What do you want, vixen? Here to gloat about your victory?" Vespera hisses at him to be quiet and approaches him cautiously. She kneels close to his cot and asks in a hushed whisper, "How do you do it?"

"Do what?" Aero responds, clearly puzzled. Frustration evident in her voice, Vespera insists, "The disappearing! How does it work?" Aero is taken aback by her question and shrugs. He answers honestly, "Not sure. I just think of a place, and the necklace takes me there. Very convenient mode of transportation, eh?" Ignoring his quip, Vespera persists, "Can it work with more than one person?" Aero chuckles and replies, "Why do you ask? Planning a little trip? Sorry to tell you, but I don't think a murderous vixen would be my ideal travel companion." However, as Vespera stares at him, he detects the seriousness in her eyes.

"Wait... you're serious?" Aero's voice reflects his astonishment. The vixen growls softly as she swallows her pride and says, "Yes. I want you to help me escape." Aero is shocked by her audacity. Kneeling in front of him is the creature who killed his master, injured him, and forced him to jump off a mountain. Yet he can't summon the energy to be angry; he is simply surprised by her boldness. His emerald eyes meet her amber ones, and he detects subtle hints of fear. "You're desperate," he flatly remarks.

Gritting her teeth, Vespera pleads, "Please. I can't go to Av- Look, I need to leave by tomorrow morning! Whatever you want, I'll do!" Aero contemplates her request for a moment and seriously considers outright refusing. However, he realizes that this is a perfect opportunity for his own escape. He scratches his chin and says, "I'll probably regret this, but I'll help you... on one condition."

Vespera sighs in relief and responds, "Name it." Aero turns to face her directly and states, "You retrieve my weapons and gear, including my master's dagger. Only then will I assist you." Vespera suppresses a growl at his request. Retrieving his equipment will be challenging but manageable. However, returning the dagger deals a significant blow to her warrior pride.

She hesitates in giving her answer, causing Aero to remark, "I guess you want to take that trip after all." "Fine!" Vespera whispers through gritted teeth. "I'll get you your things, but you better not betray me, or I will claw your heart out and devour it in front of you!" Aero casually rolls back onto the bed, saying, "The feeling is mutual. I'll be waiting, little fox." The vixen bristles at the nickname but ignores it as she slides back down the secret passageway.

Chapter 12

Vespera carefully shifts another tile, peering out from the secret passageway. She finds herself in the kitchen, relieved that it's currently empty. Quietly, she climbs out of the hole and stealthily makes her way toward the exit. As she peeks her head into the hall, she is taken aback by the number of guards patrolling late at night. Normally, there would only be one or two groups roaming around, but now she sees several mixed groups. The fact that the council allows humans to patrol the Protectorate castle only deepens her discontent and reinforces her decision to leave.

Hiding behind a corner, Vespera waits as a patrol passes by. Aero's weapons should be stored in the armory's storage room, but it's located across the castle, likely requiring her to navigate through multiple patrols. Nevertheless, she weighs her options and notices a lone mixie nearby. It's a fox similar to herself, which means stealth will be challenging. Despite this, Vespera decides to proceed. Crawling on all fours, she approaches the guard slowly. The guard has her back turned, which makes things easier, but unfortunately, her heightened animal senses pick up on Vespera's movements.

The vixen mixie turns around, startled to see Vespera there. She opens her mouth to call for help, but before she can make a sound, Vespera pounces on her swiftly. Vespera wraps her arm around the other vixen's neck, choking her. There's some shuffling and slight bumping as the mixie fox tries to raise the alarm, but Vespera quickly snaps her neck, ending her life. Although Vespera feels a pang of disgust at having to kill a fellow animal, she brushes off the feeling and discreetly hides the fox's body.

Next, Vespera takes the guard's robes and cloak for herself, ensuring to pull the hood tightly over her head and snout. She calms her nerves and walks confidently in the open of the castle toward her destination. Disguised in familiar uniforms, no one pays her any attention, and she easily reaches the armory. Upon entering, her initial relief turns to dismay when she sees another guard positioned near the storage room.

The guard greets her, and she returns the greeting, saying, "I am here on behalf of Master Thornsbane. He wishes to sign out several weapons for inspection." The guard consults his ledger and responds, "I have no mention of a Master Thornsbane here. On what authorization were you sent?" Vespera growls lightly, frustration evident, before swiftly striking the guard in the neck. The human drops their weapon, gasping for air and clutching their neck. Taking advantage of the moment, Vespera delivers a decisive blow, snapping the guard's neck. She retrieves the storage room keys from the fallen guard and drags the body inside.

Frantically scanning the room, Vespera's relief returns when she spots Aero's equipment bundled together. She gathers his belongings and places them on a service cart. Grabbing an additional tarp, she covers the cart, concealing the weapons and giving the appearance of hauling kitchen supplies.

Disguised as a kitchen worker, Vespera wheels the cart back to the kitchen and positions it in a corner. With haste, she returns to her room, retrieves the dagger, and hurries back to the kitchen. Locking the door behind her, she removes the tile from the floor. With a soft thud, she tosses the bundle of equipment into the hole, then prepares to jump in herself when she hears the doorknob rattling. Panic nearly overtakes her, but she jumps into the hole just in time,

managing to close it back before a pair of human guards enter the kitchen. She watches them closely, realizing they are merely there to sneak sips of wine.

Rolling her eyes at the humans' behavior, Vespera descends further into the hole, praying that everything will proceed according to plan.

Aero's surprise is evident as he sees Vespera returning so soon, and he playfully teases her about how desperate she must be to leave with him. Vespera fights back the urge to yell and instead produces her sickle, pointing it at Aero while saying, "Do not insult me... I am far from being in the mood." Aero notices her trembling paws and the troubled look on her face, realizing that something must have gone wrong, but he refrains from pressing further.

Vespera returns Aero's equipment and personal effects before explaining, "Okay, listen. I will be summoned early in the morning. This tunnel will lead you to the kitchen. From there, you can make your escape, I assume?" Aero nods confidently and replies, "As soon as I'm out of here, I can be anywhere else." Vespera exhales with a mix of relief and worry, continuing, "Good. Now find a spot outside the castle grounds where you can observe me. I'll raise two fingers as the signal. Understand?" Aero assures her, "I've got it all figured out, don't worry." Vespera scoffs and remarks, "I'll stop worrying once I'm far away from this place." Aero's tone shifts, becoming more serious as he asks Vespera what has happened.

Uncertain of what to reveal, Vespera simply says, "Something isn't right. Get some rest, human. I don't want you to slow me down if a fight breaks out." With those words, Vespera descends back into the tunnel, and Aero shrugs, lying back on the bed. Neither apprentice finds sleep easily as they anxiously await the dreaded morning. Vespera finally reaches her bed, tossing and turning in an attempt to find some rest. Just as sleep begins to take hold, the castle's morning bell rings.

Groggily, Vespera looks out the window, surprised to see the sun already shining brightly in the sky. Nervously, she grabs her packed belongings and proceeds through the castle, where groups of Protectors are gathered with their friends, loved ones, and masters, all filled with anxiety about the impending departure. Vespera scans the area frantically, searching for Aero but fails to spot him. She curses herself and feels foolish for placing so much trust in the human.

Just as she considers making a run for it alone, Aric and Halcyon approach her. Her heart sinks as the leopard assumes his facade of a kind master. "Good morning, my new apprentice! How did you sleep?" Vespera's appearance is disheveled, her fur matted, her eyes bloodshot, and the tremor in her paws is apparent. Despite her condition, she lies and replies, "Just fine, Master Halcyon... Is it time for us to leave now?" Halcyon nods and replies, "As soon as you're ready, we'll depart." Master Aric forces a smile and adds, "I know you must be excited to begin your journey, Vespera. Don't let me keep you. Just promise me you'll keep in touch? This old wolf gets lonely sometimes, hahaha!"

Vespera looks at Aric, tears welling up in her eyes. The vixen throws herself into his arms, pleading, "Please, Master, don't send me to Avenshire! I promise I'll do better! I'll work harder, control my temper... anything you ask!" Aric is taken aback by her outburst but pats her back reassuringly, saying, "I know you're upset about leaving, and I'll miss you greatly. But take heart, we will meet again.

I promise to visit you whenever you have leave." Vespera gazes back at Halcyon and Aric, fearing that all hope is lost. She pushes her master away with force, catching the old wolf off guard as he stumbles backward.

Facing Halcyon, Vespera brandishes her sickles and declares, "I will not go to Avenshire willingly. If you want me to go, you'll have to force me." Halcyon chuckles playfully and retorts, "That'll only take an extra five minutes, if that. I suggest you calm your nerves and join your brothers and sisters in formation." Aric stands up, positioning himself between Halcyon and his apprentice, and sternly says, "That's enough! Master Halcyon, what are you doing? She's clearly frightened. What do you hope to achieve by attacking my apprentice?" Halcyon huffs in annoyance and unsheathes his weapon, a menacing battle axe. "She's not your apprentice anymore."

Without hesitation, the master wolf swiftly draws his own spear, executing an elegant spin as he proclaims, "Says who?" Vespera smiles warmly and confidently stands at her master's side, stating, "You might want to reconsider, Master Halcyon. It would be unwise to engage." The leopard responds with a low hiss, irritated by being mocked, and says, "Master Thornsbane, think carefully about your position here. You are defying the council and their orders. That will not be tolerated." Just then, more mixies and a few Protectors encircle the duo of master and apprentice.

Aric pays no attention to the encircling adversaries and retorts, "You are not a master of this order..." Halcyon sighs, his grip tightening on his battle axe, and declares, "The order has changed, and you have failed to adapt. It seems you are no longer a master here." Their enemies draw closer, forcing Aric and Vespera to stand back to back. Vespera growls at a human who gets too close, then apologizes to Aric, saying, "Please, forgive me, Master." Aric reassures her, "You have nothing to apologize for. You couldn't have known about this treachery."

Vespera shakes her head and states, "No, I'm not sorry for that. I'm sorry for what I'm about to do." Aric looks at her with confusion, and she raises two fingers towards the sky. Aric opens his mouth to question her, but his words halt as he sees the familiar green swirls of smoke. "Oh, please tell me you didn't, Vespera..." Vespera simply looks at him sheepishly as the green clouds intensify. Finally, the smoke dissipates, and standing in the center is Aero.

Enraged, Halcyon points his weapon at Aero, shouting, "Treason! You've released the artifact-wielder?!" Aero smiles and replies, "Technically,I released myself. She just happened to leave the door open." "Seize them!" Halcyon commands. Aero quickly wraps his arms around Aric and Vespera, urging them to hold on tightly. "Just hang on! I haven't tried this with a group yet!" The wolf and vixen embrace him, and Aero concentrates on their destination. The group flickers in and out of existence as the human strains to teleport everyone.

The mixies finally gather the courage to approach, but as they draw near, Aero successfully completes the maneuver, whisking the group away to safety. Halcyon stands angrily in place as the smoke clears. Several soldiers look to him for guidance, but he pushes past them and heads toward the council chambers.
