Spring in My Step: Chapter 6
Imported from SF2 with no description.
In a panic, I grabbed the .22 pistol I had in the drawer next to my bed. “Nyanni just stay there.” I said. She grabbed my blanket to retreat under my covers. Unfortunately there was no time to admire how cute she was, I meandered into the living room, tip-toeing so not to draw attention to myself. Only able to glimpse the mess during the brief moments of light provided by the chaotic thunder outside I noticed the window behind the sofa was shattered, letting the wind from the storm blow my curtains about and soaking the couch. I then leaned over the couch to look out the window, and there I saw four of the guards I had seen before during my encounters with the Abess. They were standing in a row on their hind legs in my backyard facing me. They had clearly intended to draw my attention. I didn't feel intimidated though, their miniature medieval weaponry was laughable in the face of my .22, or so I thought.
I raised my gun and pointed it out the window, I fired three shots at their positions, but missed. They were too small and too fast to hit on top of the difficulty of trying to aim through the rain at night. The rabbits darted, two each to either side of my house. Having lost sight of them, I ran back into the bedroom, “Nyanni, get dressed we have to get out of here fast!”
“Whats happening kit?!” Nyanni exclaimed.
“The guards! They're right outside! We need to get out of here!” I threw on whatever clothes I could find, grabbed my wallet and keys and opened the door to the garage from the kitchen. “Nyanni come on!” I whispered.
“Where are we going?” she asked.
“Anywhere but here..” As I ensured Nyanni made it into the car in the garage, I heard a crackling from the backdoor. They were bound the make it in eventually. We needed to make our get away fast. Nyanni hopped in the front seat while I made my behind the wheel.
Initially I had no idea where to go. My family lived on the other side of the country and due to my work I never had time to make friends, well sufficiently close friends that I would feel comfortable enough with to bring my rabbit girlfriend to. Come to think of it, there wasn't that many places I would be able to take Nyanni without drawing too much attention. Hotels wouldn't allow “pets” and we can't just stay in my car for an indeterminate amount of time. I pressed my garage door opener from inside my car and pulled out. Feeling safe enough in a metal car I looked out to see if I could see the attackers, then on the other side of my house opposite of my garage I saw a guard poised as if ready to make a mad dash for the car. The guard took off in a sprint towards us. “Uhhh... Nyanni!?!?” I said, with no real thought behind my words. On the one hand, there wasn't much the guard could do but it was enough to make me worried. The Guard was closing fast, as I moved my foot to the gas pedal to bid this chaos adieu, something out of the darkness tackled the guard out of my field of view. At this point I didn't care I took off slinging rocks for the next 100 meters. I took a left out of my driveway heading north and didn't bother looking back. There was no way those rabbit guards could keep up with a car so I felt relieved that Nyanni and I were finally safe. Nyanni rushed to the back seat, to look out the back window. At that point I could tell that even though the guards were trying to hurt us, she still felt an affinity for her people. We were well beyond visual range of my house yet she still looked back, as if the somewhat familiar rain drenched scenery was drawing her back.
We didn’t stay on the road very long; I didn’t think we would need to. We were roughly 20 miles north in the small town of Ottawa. The rain was still pummeling down against my windshield making it hard to make out signs. On the outskirts of town was a KOA cabin rental complex with a vacancy sign flashing through the rain in a futile attempt to compete with the lightning. “Nyanni stay here in the car for a moment while I get us a room ok?” I told her, trying to be quick about it so not to draw too much attention.
“But Colen where are….” I was in too much of a hurry to get a room lined up I didn’t want to drag out the conversation. I locked the doors so she would be safe. Despite having driven so far north, I was still feeling a bit nervous about the whole situation. I had the sneaking suspicion that we were being followed although how I was unsure, clearly not by vehicle.
I returned moments later and took Nyanni to our cabin. It was fairly secluded and surrounded by trees. Good to keep onlookers at bay should we ever open a window or go outside. It was just a one bedroom place with the kitchen and living room joined into one common area. It was furnished with the basics (The best you can get on a budget). I picked her up into my arms and walked inside. She was visibly shaken, for someone who just abandoned her people and the only way of life she had ever known. The only thing that could possibly be going through her mind right now would be, “is this how my life will be from now on?”
There would be no expression of love that night. We were both weary and nervous from all the intrigue. We slept together, although I couldn’t tell who dosed off first.
The following morning, I was the last to wake up. I turned over to see Nyanni but she was already gone. I charged out of bed in a panic. “NYANNI!?” I yelled. I took one look in the living room and then rushed outside throwing the door against the side of the cabin. “NYANNI!” I screamed again.
“Here Colen!” she replied in the distance. With that I ran to her to make sure she was ok. When I reached her, to my utter surprise she wasn’t alone. There was another rabbit with her, much the same size as Nyanni and sitting on her hind legs. She was mostly white with black spots randomly placed throughout her body. Her ears were longer than Nyanni’s nearly reaching her bushy tail. “Everything is ok Colen, she is a friend.”
“So you know her?”
“Well just recently, since you were asleep I went outside to find something to eat and I met her near a creek. Her name is He’ki.” She explained.
“Hi…” He’ki stuttered. I didn’t really know how to respond. After having just woke up I really wasn’t too inquiring. If Nyanni trusted her then I suppose it would be ok. Hell, Nyanni knew a lot more about what was going on than I did.
He’ki Began to whisper inaudibly to Nyanni while keeping both eye fixed on me. Nyanni followed suit and whispered back while also looking back. They looked fairly serious so I didn’t want to ask what they were talking about. “Since Nyanni already ate, I’m gonna get something myself.” I thought.
I walked through the kitchen and it hit me, I didn’t bring any food. “Nyanni, will you be ok if I make a run to the store to get some food?”
“Of course Kit!” Nyanni replied. Her tone of voice showed some positivity for a change which eased my worries.
I was gone for about an hour and half; picked up enough things to last for a few days. I pulled into the driveway of the cabin then started shuffling things inside. Nyanni and He’ki were sitting on the couch in the living area watching me struggle with all the bags. “Colen, I’m glad your back, He’ki has something important to tell us.”
“That this is all a dream and we’re somehow not being chased by mentally unstable vegetarian rodents?” I snapped back, but more trying to lighten the mood. I realized only after making that remark that what I said was rude.
“I hope the last thing you said wasn’t directed at us Colen…” He’ki said most angrily.
“Disregard that… my brain-mouth filter must be broke.”
“Don’t think I’ve forgiven you, but Nyanni is right, there is something I need to tell you both. She has told me all about your… well... journey, but what I really want to tell you is that you’re not alone. There are others like yourselves albeit not… umm… as intimate…” I stood there in shock; it was somewhat absurd yet a little welcome. After all, misery loves company.
“So like us, but not like us? Which is it?” I asked.
“We have a group that gathers not too far from here on a ranch in the hills north off Highway 6. By ‘like you’ I mean to say that you are not the only rabbit-human relationship there is. There are plenty of rabbits who at some point through fear or curiosity that have made contact with humans and have forged friendships with them. But none of which I have ever heard of resulted in a sexual encounter…”
“So is this a club, is there a membership fee?” I stated sarcastically.
“COLEN!” Nyanni shouted, “This is serious will you please calm down?”
“Ok Ok!” I acquiesced.
He’ki went on, “There is more at stake here than just your relationship however. Rumor has spread throughout the region about what the Spirit Burrow has been doing.”
“Spirit Burrow?” I questioned.
“Well that’s what others call the burrow where he held you Colen.” Nyanni replied.
“Ah... Well what do you all call it?”
“Just The Burrow, do you call your house anything special?” Nyanni said with a smirk.
He’ki continued, “What I don’t understand though is why all the fuss about you two? I mean to say that, Nyanni, you’re not the first rabbit to escape the burrow, and you’re not the first to make contact with a human, so why all the fuss about you two?”
“Uhh.. Umm…” my cheeks turned crimson at the question and I really didn’t want to reply.
“I’m pregnant” Nyanni stated starkly. “Colen was destined to mate with the Abbess and give her an heir. But instead that heir was given to me.”
He’ki’s mouth dropped as if the puzzle pieces in her head had suddenly fell together. Being on the outside she certainly knew more than either of us combined. Whatever grapevine she is plugged into should come in handy. “So essentially, you just gave the Abbess the middle finger? He’ki said fighting back laughter. “That is classic!” Me and Nyanni looked at each other. I could see she wasn’t as pleased with her actions as He’ki was. “Listen, you two really need to come by the ranch tonight. I see you just got some food but there will be plenty there, for both palates.”
“More like us huh?” I pondered; couldn’t hurt to reach out to others that could help us.
“So you’ll come then?” He’ki asked trying to rush a decision.
“Nyanni, I’m down for it, are you ok with it?
“I suppose we could.”
“Fantastic! I’ll let everyone know we have two more!” He’ki said, with a smile covering her face.
“He’ki wait a second, before you leave. You said that your group is full of rabbits that have made contact with other humans. Who have you made contact with?” I asked.
“Hehe.. the ranchers wife. Her husband had trapped me and gave me to her to cook, but I pleaded with her and she set me free. Don’t worry, you’ll get to meet her there tonight! She loves having new members!” With that He'ki took off running in a fit of excitement jumping higher and higher with each thrust of her hind feet as she took off into the woods.
