Daniel shared a last, lingering kiss with Willow, their tongues tangling and intertwining, before Daniel pulled away, holding his beloved's paws in his hands, savoring the feeling he got from Willow – which by the way the young effeminate Whitetail's inner ears were going from a salmon pink to a rich burgundy – Willow shared the same – if not more.
“Until soonest, my sweet - “ Daniel murmured, squeezing the Whitetail's paw ever so gently.
Willow stared at him, his ears slicking back, as he swallowed and opened his muzzle as if to speak, then closed it again.
“Penny for your thoughts?" Daniel gently probed.
Willow's lips curled slightly, then he hung his head in a bashful, sheepish expression. “You'd think less of me if I spoke my hearts desire -"
Tenderly, disengaging one hand, Daniel lifted Willow's chin up, gazing into the deep, soulful brown eyes.
“Never my sweet, please, be honest with me, as I will be with you. For is that not how a relationship should be? Truthful and honest?"
Willow scuffed lightly at the ground with a cloven hoof, stammering and quivering, before he shyly darted his head forwards and in a rush of words, whispered into Daniel's ear.
“Woah, slow down!" Daniel laughed at the ticklish breath. “Take a breath Willow, I can hear your heartbeat from over here – breathe, nice and slow, relax, it's okay..."
Willow squirmed, doing as he was asked, before he hung his head again looking even more shy.
“Tell me, please?" Daniel whispered, ever so tenderly stroking the edge of Willow's left ear from the tip down to the cup.
“Have you - “ Willow whispered, making Daniel lean closer to hear. “Oh, this is so embarrassing, we Cervid don't just..."
Walking, Daniel led Willow to a nearby bench seat and sat him down, sitting beside him and resting a hand lightly on Willow's quivering thigh.
“It's alright, I'm curious to know all about you, your people, your culture – everything! What there is on the internet – well – most of it is probably half truth and half just..."
Nervously, Willow glanced sideways, then leaned over and pecked Daniel on the cheek with a timid kiss.
“Aww, come on sweety, don't be so shy, I promise I won't laugh, or hurt your feelings, or anything. You can confide in me, I swear, I won't judge you – ever!"
Willow visibly fought what Daniel suspected were deep cultural inhibitions imprinted on the Cervid by their own kind.
“It's...difficult - “ Willow whispered, his ears twitching as he listened to the sounds and the wind, ever so often glancing left and right; like he was about to get caught out.
“I understand – I think. Ask me anything, please... If it helps you, Willow, please! Ask me!"
Willow nervously bit his lower lip, before quivering, “Daniel, please – I can not..."
“I insist, please - “ Daniel asked, hugging the quivering deer close.
Willow trembled, before he leaned over, resting his head on Daniel's shoulder. “Promise me – please!"
“I promise, I swear..." Daniel murmured.
Willow breathed out, his furred fingers contracting and relaxing as he took a few quivering breaths, then whispered quietly. “Have you ever felt... the rut? Or heard of it?"
Daniel's eyebrows lifted in surprise, but he only hesitated for a moment before answering. “Only...through documentaries and Wikipedia... They call it the mating season – but, no, we humans don't experience the rut, personally – why do you ask Willow?"
Willow's ears went flat against the back of his hat, so low, Daniel thought they'd be against his neck if he hadn't been wearing it. With a low whisper, Willow spoke shyly.
“It's just...something that's so deeply ingrained into our culture, but its considered taboo to talk about it amongst non-Cervid. I... I trust you Daniel, and I want to share everything with you, but I'm afraid of what you might think of me."
Daniel hugged Willow tighter, giving what strength and comfort he could to the nerve-wracked Cervid beside him.
“Willow, I don't care about what's taboo in your culture..." Daniel sighed and whispered back, turning his head to gaze into Willow's eyes. “I care about you and our relationship. If talking about the rut is important to you, then I want to know about it – please?"
Willow swallowed, then a wavering line formed on his pale-furred lips. “Thank you Daniel... I mean that. It...it means a lot to me. I just...want to be able to share every part of myself – with you."
Daniel leaned forwards, exchanging another long, breathless kiss with Willow, After a handful of moments, he leaned back and placed a hand lightly on Willow's cheek, continuing to gaze into his eyes.
“I want to know you, ever_y part of you Willow. So, tell me, what _is the rut like for you?"
Willow shuddered, thinking for a moment, discarding twice as many thoughts as he had answers. At last, he shivered and glanced at Daniel, before turning his head away and trembling, his voice wracked with his raw, primal emotions.
“It is...hard to put into words," Willow began. It is – different – for me – being...what I am, who I am... The urges are strong, Daniel, very strong, so intense! It's like a fever that comes over my whole body. As an effeminate, gay Stag, it's even more complicated."
“Tell me, please? I want to know, to be prepared, to love you, to hold you, and to help you... when it comes."
“Well," Willow's voice cracked as he fought his emotions. “I don't have the desire to mate...forgive me – make love with the Doe's, as the other stags do."
“Go on..." Daniel gently encouraged him.
“Yet the cursed rut! It affects me just the same! It's like my body is demanding, something that I can not give it!"
Daniel trembled, getting a tiny glimpse of Willow's distress. “I can only imagine how difficult that time must be for you, my love."
“It's like...being torn in two!" Willow moaned, his fingers curling into fists on his lap. “Part of me wants to give in, to stop resisting those primal urges, but the other part of me; knows it's not what I truly want!"
“Easy my love, easy!" Daniel murmured, gently cuddling the sobbing Willow. “I'm here for you, Willow, Whatever you need, I'm here for you, come on my sweet – please don't cry!"
Willow leaned into Daniel's embrace, his love and comfort reciprocated by Willow himself. He knew he was lucky to have someone who loved him for who he was, even during the difficult times that would soon be at hand...
*
Work kept Daniel and Willow apart, but they send loving messages back and forth, until at last, they got to meet again. Willow stood at the entrance of the fairground, once more dressed in loose, light clothing. His nostrils flared, inhaling the late blooming roses that stood proud in the garden behind him. Their scent was intoxicating, powerful, arousing... yet he fought his urges with everything he had.
*
He'd not do what he'd done with those roses Daniel had bought him.
*
Giddy as a fawn wired on sugary snacks, he'd gone home that night. He'd put the roses in a glass vase, filled it with water, and showered. Willow stood in his shower, the hot water cascading like a waterfall over his body. He closed his eyes and let his thoughts wander. He couldn't help but think about Daniel, his handsome human lover – his mate – if Willow had his way.
As he lathered his body with the special soap, the scent of those roses wafted to his nose, reminding Willow of the powerful aphrodisiac properties they held for Cervid. He couldn't help but feel the stirring in his loins as he imagined Daniel's strong, furless arms wrapping around him, holding him close.
He moaned and stepped from one cloven hoof to the other, his thoughts turning more lurid with each beat of his rising heart rate. He imagined how it would feel, Daniel's hands all over his body, how his lips would feel, nibbling and biting at his nape and shoulder...
“Stop...please - “ Willow moaned, slapping his soapy paws against the shower wall with a wet slurp.
His mind suddenly turned on itself, conjuring challenges they would face as a couple. Differences between their species, the judgment not only from some of Willow's own kind – but humans as well. He couldn't help but worry, that their love and relationship would never truly be accepted.
Despite those worrisome thoughts, his love for Daniel burned strong within him – fighting back against those dark, oppressive thoughts. He would do anything, anything, in his power, to make their relationship not only work, but thrive. To show Daniel, how much he meant to him.
As he rinsed off the soap, having banished the lustful thoughts, he stepped out of the shower, feeling renewed and invigorated, ready and willing to face whatever challenges lay ahead for them. Drying himself off, Willow retired to his bed, where he lay on his back, gazing at the ceiling in thought.
Scent of the roses filled his nostrils, and without thought, Willow's paw reached out and plucked one from the vase. His eyes went misty, then blank, as he held it to his nostrils and inhaled the alluring scent. One by one, Willow plucked the rose petals, daintily dropping them into his muzzle as he chewed each one – the texture, the scent and the taste overwhelming him...
It would be a long time before Willow finally got to sleep that night...
*
Daniel arrived, wearing jeans and a light T-shirt, before he took both of Willow's paws in his hands, pulling his beloved close and kissing him deeply.
“Mmm - “ Willow gurgled, his wedge-like tail flagging from side to side.
Taking his lover by the paw, Daniel led the wide-eyed Willow into the fairgrounds, holding hands and Willow gazing around from behind protective glasses that blocked out the worst of the bright lights.
“Oh, Daniel, its all so...magical!" Willow squeaked, his ears flickering with excitement.
“I'm glad you're enjoying it, my beloved," Daniel smiled, squeezing Willow's paw affectionately.
As they strolled through the fair, Daniel tried his luck at some of the games; and ended up winning a plush deer toy that was almost as big as Willow himself. Giving it to the startled, wide-eyed deer, Willow squealed and hugged the plush toy with love and gratitude for Daniel.
“Hug it at night, and dream of me?" Daniel smiled, as he kissed Willow lovingly on the cheek.
“I will, I promise!" Willow nodded, giddy as a doe on her sweet sixteenth birthday. “I...um..."
“Come with me," Daniel smiled, leading Willow to the cloakroom, where the plush toy was booked in, Willow was given a ticket to redeem it when they left.
“This is...so much fun!" Willow giggled, unable to help himself, leaning against Daniel, who smiled and hugged him tenderly.
“I'm so glad you're having a good time, Willow." Daniel chuckled at Willow's infectious smile and gentle laugh.
Willow ate, Daniel was sure, his own body weight in fairground food and then some. All of it was herbivore-safe, and Daniel was astounded at the variety that was available. He himself ate sparingly, knowing how bad deep-fried carnival food was.
As the night wore on, they found a spot on the grass and spread out a blanket, Willow's plush deer sitting beside him. Laying back, Willow took off his glasses and put them away in a small bag.
“Look up at the stars," Daniel murmured.
“Ooh - “ Willow gasped, watching as a shooting star streaked across the sky and vanished over the horizon.
“They're beautiful, aren't they?" Daniel sighed in pleasure, holding Willow's paw gently. “Oh, the fireworks are about to start!"
As they began to light up the night sky, Willow turned his head and kissed Daniel, a tender and passionate embrace that left them both breathless.
“Thank you for this wonderful night, and third date, Daniel - “ Willow said, resting his head on Daniel's shoulder.
“I wouldn't want to be anywhere else," Daniel replied, holding Willow close to him.
As they watched the fireworks, their hands intertwined, they knew they had found each other, and in doing so, had truly, found something special.
