There's a bit of a cliffhanger, but I do have a continuation planned for the story.

The grass of the glen tickled the bottoms of Epona's bare feet. A pile of daisies rested at the girl's side, and she was slowly weaving them into a wreath. One such crown adorned her golden locks already. The girl began to hum as she worked, an old tune that her mother had taught her. One by one the pile shrank as she wove a flower crown larger than her own. When she had finished, her humming ceased, and she raised her leaf-green eyes to the figure that had appeared on the opposite side of the clearing.

His pelt was black as obsidian. The long hair of his mane and fetlocks appeared silky and gleamed in the afternoon light. He slowly crossed the clearing, half again as large as the largest stallion that Epona had ever seen, her father's magnificent destrier. Justice, the horse, paled in comparison to this beast, whose beauty surpassed anything that she had ever encountered. The silver spire adorning his forehead was nearly three feet long, its point sharp and wicked enough to kill.

The unicorn appeared tame enough as he approached her. His great dark head lowered to sniff at her, one of his great exhalations blowing the flower crown from her hair. To her credit, Epona didn't flinch, merely closing her eyes as his breath gusted over her. After several long moments, he stepped back and inclined his head, ever-so-carefully brushing the tip of his deadly horn across her forehead.

'You are more… pure than the virgins they normally send me.' His voice was surprisingly smooth, deep and masculine in her mind. The girl flinched, suddenly terrified that he might be able to read the thoughts that bubbled to the surface despite her desperate attempts to drown them, but the telepathic connection seemed to be one way.

The horned stallion seemed to take her reaction as commonplace. The vast majority of humans were unaccustomed to suddenly hearing the voices of those they deemed beasts, after all. He circled the human girl slowly, his head held low to show her that he meant no harm. Halting in front of her once more, he queried, 'What is your name, girl?'

“Epona," she replied, her gaze fixed on the magnificent beast before her.

'A fine name,' the black unicorn mused. 'Did you know that it means “horse"?'

“I did," she admitted. “My mother picked it. She always had a fondness for horses."

He huffed softly. 'Your mother sounds like a good woman.'

“Aye. She was."

Sensing the girl's sadness, the stallion lay down, close enough that she could run her fingers through his mane. After placing the second flower crown that she had made upon his head - sliding it over his silvery horn - that was exactly what she did. She marvelled at how soft and silky it was. Pushing away her grief, Epona asked the unicorn, “And what is your name, o most pure of steeds?"

He snorted loudly. She wasn't sure if it was an amused reaction to the title she had applied to him or if unicorns just had that in common with mundane horses. 'My name is Ahearne.' As the human girl pulled her hand back, Ahearne shifted, briefly brushing his horn against her belly. She gasped, sparks of heat flaring deep within her.

Epona flushed, but the legendary beast seemed not to notice her outburst. Her hands, no longer satisfied to explore Ahearne's mane alone, now roamed his shoulders and back. It was finer than even the finest pelts that she had ever touched. The sparks caught and became a dull flame, just waiting for the barest of breaths to coax it to life.

The unicorn seemed not to mind the girl's roaming hands, even going so far as to encourage it with the occasional brush of his horn across her middle. Each time it touched her, the flame in her belly burned brighter. Unconsciously she rubbed her thighs together as she stroked him, her cheeks growing ruddy.

Ahearne nickered softly. Epona glanced at him. Her eyes caught on his silver spire, which gleamed in the light filtering into the glade. Noticing her gaze, the black stallion lowered his head. 'Would you like to touch it, dear Epona?'

Her hands rose to do so before she could even think to do otherwise. Its texture was surprisingly velvety beneath her fingers. Gingerly she tested the tip of his horn with the tip of an index finger. Yes, it was surely sharp enough to do some serious damage.

The unicorn's magic had a more profound effect on the girl the longer that she caressed him at its source. The flame in her belly, fuelled by the physical contact, became an inferno. Dazed by the unfamiliar heat engulfing her body, Epona drew off her thin dress and cast it to the side. Ahearne lowered his head to nuzzle at her breasts. Her brown nipples engorged as he brushed his velvety lips across them.

Sighing, Epona placed her hands on either side of Ahearne's head, encouraging him to continue. She gasped as his long tongue snaked out and rubbed across her nipples. She threw her head back and closed her eyes. “O, my dear steed, please do not stop! I desire nothing but your sweet caress!"

She felt, rather than heard, his gentle laughter in her head. 'Then lay back, sweet Epona, and I shall caress you elsewhere.'

She did so after discarding her underclothes, leaving her virginal mound exposed to the equine creature. Ahearne lowered his muzzle and licked her slit from the bottom up, causing the girl to freeze in shock as pleasure exploded through her core. A strangled cry escaped from her lips. If this was what a simple stroke of the unicorn's tongue alone felt like, imagine what -

All train of thought was banished as Ahearne's broad tongue forced its way into her entrance. Epona's mouth puckered in a silent “o" as the thick muscle wiggled back and forth, setting her inner walls alight. He made great care not to force his way past the young lady's hymen. The obsidian equine's upper lip rubbed at the girl's engorged clitoris. The surplus of stimulation quickly drove her to her peak. She cried out the unicorn's name as she came, her hands clutched in his dark mane.

Ahearne wasn't done with the girl yet. He withdrew his tongue from her tight tunnel. He lightly kissed her nether lips for a bit until she wasn't so sensitive, then began to gently lap at her clit once more. The young girl's green eyes fluttered shut and she moaned her pleasure to the heavens.

Then she heard the clinking and clanking of armor. Twigs snapped and leaves crunched. A loud voice sounded out. “Hark, beast! Your end has - what the - Princess Epona!"

Epona's eyes flew open. Her blond head lifted as she stared in shock and horror at the Commander of her father's Kingsguard, Cáel Mac Branain, as he emerged from the trees with a retinue of ten soldiers behind him. Their helms left their faces bare, their expressions of mixed horror, disgust, and - in multiple visages, more than a hint of arousal - clear for Epona to see.

Ahearne - and his heavenly tongue, to Epona's mixed relief and despair - froze. Slowly he lifted his head, leaving the naked princess panting and whimpering on the grass beneath him, and turned to face the warriors. His argent spear glinted dangerously in the afternoon light. 'What is the meaning of this?' the dark unicorn demanded. By the looks of shock on the soldiers' expressions, they could obviously hear the creature's mental voice.

Commander Mac Branain stepped forward, his hand on the hilt of the sword at his hip. “What is the meaning of this?!" he spat, his face red with rage. “What have you done to the Princess of the Highlands?"

Ahearne lowered his head non-threateningly, stepping away from Epona and towards the humans. 'She is obviously the virgin tribute that your kingdom has sent to me this year, is she not?' At the human man's nod, he continued, 'I have simply claimed my bride, as is my right. In exchange, as you well know, fair weather blankets your lands and your crops thrive, unbothered by pests or blight.'

The commander's expression was a curious mixture of fury and horror. “Aye, but King Conall has decided that the price you demand each year is too high to pay. After twenty years of tribute, the lords of the Highlands are running low on daughters." He cast a pitying glance at Epona, who had scrambled for her discarded dress and slipped it on over her head. “Knowing the true fate of your virgin tributes as I now do, I must say that I agree with his decision to end the yearly sacrifice by slaying you." Mac Branain drew his sword, the soldiers behind him drawing their preferred weapons as well.

Epona shrieked in horror. She had known that the soldiers would come to slay the unicorn - who better to use as bait than the king's own daughter? - but she was now bound to the creature by magic and desire. She couldn't let him die. But what could she, an unarmed and untrained girl, do against eleven armed and experienced soldiers?

Mac Branain was the first to attack, shouting as he brought his blade down in an arc towards the unicorn's exposed neck. Ahearne danced backwards at the last second, his muscles rippling beneath his dark coat. Caught off-guard by the missed strike, the commander stumbled forward a few steps, luckily managing not to hurt himself or others with his errant blade.

Obviously enraged to see their leader made into a fool, the other soldiers advanced, spreading out to circle around the horned equine. After recovering his balance, Mac Branain joined them, a dark scowl on his face. “Let's kill the beast!" he shouted. “Show it no mercy!"

Epona wanted to look away, but she could not, her green eyes transfixed on her unicorn. As she watched, it seemed as if his silver horn began to glow with an inner light all its own. And then the soldiers were upon him.

There were too many for him to dodge. Surrounded as he was, there was no way for him to flee. As the soldiers' weapons descended, the unicorn was completely at their mercy.

Then the warriors' looks of triumph morphed into ones of confusion and fear as their steel and iron blades deflected as harmlessly off of the creature as if they were drops of water. Ahearne whinnied and reared up on his hind legs, the soldiers in front of him falling back in the face of his flailing hooves.

The unicorn dropped to all fours, the impact of his hooves almost seeming to shake the glen. He tossed his head, that deadly spear flashing as it arced towards the unprepared humans. Epona cried out fearfully, not wishing to witness the demise of any of these men that she knew. But as Ahearne's horn made contact with them, there was no damage done. Each of the men simply dropped like stones, snoring loudly in an enchanted slumber.

When they had all fallen, one after another, the unicorn approached the princess with his head lowered. 'I have put them in a deep sleep. They will wake in a few hours with no memory of what happened here.' He knelt in front of the girl, turning his head to look at her. 'If you do not wish to come with me and be my newest bride, sweet Epona, I shall not fault you. But if you do wish to remain with me, I suggest that we depart this place now, for we cannot remain in the Highlands any longer.'

Epona reached out to run her fingers through his mane. The fire in her belly began to burn anew, though this time there was no accompanying glint or touch of the unicorn's horn. Smiling, the princess drew her dress above her head and cast it aside. “I shall gladly be your bride and accompany you to the ends of the earth, my dear Ahearne," she announced. The girl twisted her fingers in his black mane, using the grip to pull herself onto his back before he rose to his hooves.

Together, the princess and the unicorn rode out of the glen, leaving the sleeping soldiers and the rest of the Highlands behind.
