Making a friend: Ch 6 Walks in the woods

Nothing like a walk in the woods to clear your mind and clear the air.

Thanksgiving had come to the research outpost in the far cold north. Much of the crew was American so the outpost held a feast at the time the United States observed their holiday. During the event a big meal was prepared and everyone who wanted to was welcomed to participate. Scott was happy for the change in activity and John was happy for a new experience.

Thursday had come and the smells from the dining hall was mouthwatering to even those without the razor keen sense of smell of a polar bear. John was rather distracted throughout the morning and Scott tried to hide his amusement.

“Okay John, I think we can finish our work tomorrow."

“Hmm?" John asked as he glanced out the window towards the building that housed the dining hall.

Scott snorted a laugh that John's ears barely twitched towards.

“John?", Scott placed his hand on John's shoulder and the bear tore his gaze from the window and returned his attention back to his friend.

“I said I think we can finish up everything tomorrow." Scott stood and walked to the door of his office and was putting his jacket on.

“Are you going someplace?" John scratched under his muzzle.

“Well, I figured we could go for a walk and work up an appetite. “

“Oh, okay." John agreed as he followed Scott. Anything to get him away from the distracting smell of the food and a chance to be away for a while with Scott. He was missing being back home and their complete privacy and private time together.

Outside the temperature was sharp with the early winter cold and frost was on the leaves that covered much of the grounds. Dark grey clouds hung low in the sky and hid much of the mountains from view, a sure sign that snow was likely soon.

A trail followed around the perimeter of the outpost grounds and through the nearby woods. The gravel crunched under John's heavy bare foot falls and drowned out Scott's lighter steps. The heavy grey sky and dim light might have depressed many other people, but Scott actually enjoyed the scenery as it was how he imagined the Misty Mountains strait from “The Hobbit". Walking side by side John heaved a sigh of relief to be away for a while; he was okay with being around the others it just made him feel drained. Scott had talked with John as he encouraged his friend to be open with him about anything so he could help with any problems. He just enjoyed some quiet time away from the others with Scott. Now that they where away from the buildings and others John opened the upper portion of his coverall like outfit and left it lay tied around his waist, the cold air felt wonderful against his crisp white fur and black skin underneath

Scott watched his friend walking a few paces ahead of him and marveled at the big hairy beast before him, the breadth of his wide shoulders, the spread of his thick back, his big arms with their dense muscles, thick tree trunk legs and all covered in that rich fur coating him from head to toe. Watching his muscled shoulders as he walked and the shifting mass beneath fur and skin was alluring to behind and Scott found himself becoming aroused as he watched John lumbering before him.

The wind had shifted and the wonderful smells of the preparing feast faded, John was grateful for the respite. For some reason he had started to become more aware of his keen sense of smell in the last week or so. It had begun to drive him to some distraction when he experienced an appealing scent. Food had become more enjoyable true, but John had also found it harder to tune out the smells of the others around him. He could smell that some people were still nervous around him, or that others had gone a few days without showering. It was an annoyance to say the least, but he was just going to have to learn to adapt to it. He sighed as the food smells faded to background levels and his mind cleared. Now how he could smell was the forest around him, the earth beneath his clawed feet, and Scott beside him. Scott's scent he was pleased with and comforted by. It was familiar to him and yet something was different about it this time. John slowed to a stop and Scott nearly bumped into him, John craned his long neck to the side and looked down at his human companion, taking a deep sniff.

John's sudden stop caught Scott off guard and he had to step to the bear's left side where he also stopped as the bear was now looking at him and making a noticeable sniffing sound.

“Is something wrong John?"

“I am sorry; I just noticed you smelled different somehow." John took another whiff, trying to discern the new quality.

Scott redden a bit as he realized what John's sense of smell must have picked up on, thankfully his face was already red from the cold a bit. He started to try to clear his head of his arousal.

“It smells familiar, some people back at the outpost smell similarly quit often." John took a final smell and realized he found it thrilling for some reason. Scott's scent was comforting, but this additive olfactory quality sent thrills down his spin. He shook his massive head slightly; like a dog shedding water from his fur, trying to dislodge the sensation from his brain. He was not sure what the scent meant, but to smell it from Scott had left him feeling warmer and triggered odd stirrings within him.

“John, are you okay?" Scott was mildly concerned.

“Yes, I am fine." John raised his head and looked towards the sky, “I felted light headed for a moment."

“You felt light headed from my smell?" Scott arched an eye brow in a vulcan-esk way.

“I am sorry", John looked back to his friend. “I did not mean to scare you."

“It is okay, you didn't really scare me."

“I did to; I can smell panic or fear on you." John tapped his big black nose.

“You know that smell, but you cannot place the other scent?"

“No" John eyebrows lowered as he thought, causing him to appear to glare angrily at something.

“What were you thinking about a few moments ago?", John shifted his weight to one side and crossed him arms over his barreled chest. “It might help me understand what the scent means or is related to."

Scott sighed; it seemed it was time to explain some things to the bear.

“Come on along my friend; let us walk while we talk about the birds and the bees."

John's dish like ears whirled and followed Scott's voice as he started to once more walk up the trail away from base. Soon his hulking shadow over came the human's smaller one as the sun's weak light broke through here and there.

Some time later found John sitting on the leaf covered ground with Scott standing next to him. The talk had lasted long enough that they had returned to the outpost grounds and John had covered himself back up in his flight suite like coverall. John had listened intently as his friend explained the details of attraction and sexuality as best he could.

“Well that goes far towards explaining the stuff I have read about and saw on the internet." John scratched behind one ear as he glanced down while he thought some things over and compared it to what he knew.

“Some things you discovered on the internet?" Scott was somewhat worried about that statement.

“Yes, I encountered some things while looking up information over the last year or so."

“Such as?" Scott's imagination began to come up with disturbing things a innocent bear might find “on the internet."

“Well, I noted that you humans seemed to have a diverse set of mating practices beyond simple reproductive goals that involved members of the other, same, or both genders."

Scott could only laugh to himself; John's nonhuman view of things was so refreshing and very scientific in outlook. “My friend beyond the biological role sex can perform it has other functions as well, as far as we know of in social creatures like humans and other animals."

“What other functions are those?" John was intrigued.

Scott leaned against a nearby tree as he organized his words.

“Well sex feels good for both involved in a balanced and healthy relationship. It can also be a bonding experience between two people who care for one another."

After a moment he continued, “That is often referred to as making love. But more people seem only interested in the feel good experience that follows an orgasm and treat sex as a base thing to be shared with any willing partner just for the high."

“That part does not sound like such a good thing, doesn't that cheapen the experience?" John was curious.

“It does indeed do that my friend. You turn something special into a routine task and it loses much."

“So back on the trail, what were you feeling or thinking about?" John was wondering about the unknown scent he smelled from Scott.

“Well that was…" Scott coughed a moment, “that was me thinking about someone."

“What were you feeling as you thought about them?"

“Well I was feeling a sense of attraction to them."

“Oh, I see." John felt a sense of pain.

Scott noted the drooping of his friend's ears.

"It was you silly." He finally blurted out; Scott always found it hard to tell someone such a thing.

“You feel that way about me?" John was actually surprised.

“Yes, but I did not want to pressure you or coerce you into feeling such things if you honestly did not." Scott explained.

“I understand." John's gaze fell to the ground.

“John, I am sorry." Scott worried over the outcome of telling John his deeper feelings for him.

“I think I felted the same way when I sensed your attraction to me." John finally said after a few moments of thought.

“You did?", Scott stood away from the tree at hearing John's statement. “You do?"

“I felted a thrill surge threw me that left me feeling flush and I had other feelings I don't know how to express." John looked up at his friend, looked at his eyes.

“I sometimes forget how inexperienced you are, you did not grow up so you do not have a life time of experiences to draw upon. You only know what you were taught while you were grown."

Scott walked towards is seated friend and offered a hand. “Come, it is getting very late and we have a busy evening ahead of us."

John smiled and gave a nod as he took the offered hand but stood up under his own power.

“It takes time to turn learned knowledge into useful experiences, but that is why it is helpful to have someone who is experienced as a friend." Scott pats the towering bear on his broad back.

“So you have lots of experience having sex with others?” John asked.

“Umm, “ Scott struggled to find the words to explain. “Not really John. I know what to do and such but I have had little practice. I have not had great luck finding someone I truly cared about to experience “Being with”.”

“Scott, I know my feelings for you and you know your feelings for me." John said as the started walking the final distance back to the building that housed their dwelling.

Scott gave his friend a nod and John continued.

“Well, I want to improve the bond that exists between us if you are willing." He explained his thoughts as best he could. Scott only listened as he walked.

“I think tonight after dinner we should make love." John said simply.

Scott stopped instantly, stunned. He could only look at John as he walked past him a few steps and then stopping himself.

“You want to do what?"

“I would like to experience making love with you tonight" John looked at his human companion. “After dinner of course; I know I smell ham and turkey being cooked, I am very hungry after smelling it cooking all day and our walk."

Then John causally turned away and walked into the building as if they had only been discussing the weather. Scott only watched his bear's back as he walked away, too stunned by what John had said. His heartbeat started pounding in his ears and he felt tightness in his throat.

It had been so long since he had been with anyone in that way, he was so inexperienced himself.

Scott was distracted to say the least as he and John showered and returned to their room. John was once again overwhelmed by the smell of the food and with his mind on the feast soon to be had he was not thinking ahead and to what he had told Scott nearly an hour before downstairs at the front entrance.

John busied himself dressing in a fresh outfit; his attire was designed to be durable and simply cloth his body and not for formal events. He chose a blue and silver coverall that he had worn on his first day of awaking and home to live with Scott. He did the best he could as Scott was taking longer than usual in getting dressed himself.

Finally, both were clothed and left for the dining hall. The air had grown even colder as night settled in and a light snow had begun to fall. The covered walkway between the buildings offered shelter to the crew members as they made their way and entered the building.

When Scott got to the door and opened it for John the smells of the meal flooded out washed over John. He stepped back and Scott heard a growling from his friend's stomach and noted he wiped at his mouth with the back of one meaty paw. Scott smirked at that and did his best to set aside his thoughts of the future and enjoy a good meal with his friend. After John ducked into the doorway Scott followed him in and they reached the dinner area.

Food was laid out on long buffet tables and people mulled around between the food and their tables with loaded plates. After securing their usual table John stepped into line eagerly with his plate in paw. Scott waited behind John and once more his mind returned to events to come. He was nervous but also excited; he and John would do something he had wanted for some time now. But the shift from idea and concept to reality was a bit overwhelming. Just what did John know about sex and what would he want them to do? He could only guess and hope not to disappoint him.

“Here you go John, we made sure to cook loads extra for you in case you wanted more." a member of the cooking staff explained. His name was Jared and he loaded the bear's plate with thick slices of turkey and ham.

“Thank you very much; I will definitely have extras after everyone else has had their fill." He assured the young man. Then he saw the stuffing and continued down the line. Scott took a small portion of turkey and ham as Jared served him as well. After completing the run down the line they returned to their table and enjoyed their meal. John ate with hearty enjoyment as did Scott and they talked while they ate. Scott didn't want to bring up their earlier topic while around so many other people so they discussed Star Wars and other nerdy subjects.

After a second helping for each, Scott noticed that several people had begun to clear out of the hall and people started to gather in groups while having some pie and coffee. John ate his second plate quicker than the first and went off for a third helping while Scott picked at the remains of his second helping. After John had returned with his plate Scott moved closer to his friend and brought up the subject who latter tonight.

“Listen John, are you sure you want us to do that tonight?" He said in a quiet voice.

“Yes, I am." John nodded then swiveled one ear towards Scott, "Unless you don't want to." John looked from his food and then turned his attention fully to Scott.

“Well, I am very interested in it." Scott explained. He appeared quite out of sorts.

John had never seen Scott in such a way. “If something is wrong" he assured Scott, “then please tell me Scott."

“No, no, it's nothing like that." Scott shook his head. “It just came out of the blue."

“Well how long have you been thinking about me in this way?" John asked.

Scott swallowed before he could answer, “Since I first saw you after you awoke."

John nodded, “I have lived with you for a long time now Scott, I have come to realize I have had feelings of this nature as well for nearly as long."

John scratched under his jaw, “I would say that is a long enough time to not be so “out of the blue" as you say."

Scott nod to himself and became lost in thought. John nudged his leg with his foot to bring him back to attention.

“Come; let us return to our room." John tried to smile reassuringly. “I think I have had enough dinner, I have other things I would like to experience and learn about.

John stood first and Scott followed. As they left the dining hall and returned to their room they walked close by together and it was not only because of the now heavily falling snow and strong winds blowing around them.
