Part 10d: Tokyo, Japan (Isabella & Chameleon)

~Meanwhile~

As Chameleon and his wife walk along the path to a restaurant, he’s spotted by someone and the man comes up. “Daiki-san? Is that you?” The man facing them was tall, with long black hair, in slightly more traditional clothing than the suits and ties that have infiltrated the country from the western world. His storm grey eyes hold a wealth of world-weariness, sadness and wisdom that not many have seen by his age. In one hand, he holds a flute that is obviously much cherished and played by the man.

It took Chameleon a moment to recognize who was speaking to him, amongst the crowd that was milling to and fro on the path. When recognition dawned upon them though, he gave a perfunctory bow to show respect and then nodded, “Taro, a surprise to be sure. Did you know that I would be here today or were you waiting for someone else to arrive?” He asked, stepping off the side of the path with Isabella at his side.

Taro shook his head while smiling and returning Chameleon's bow. “No, actually, I’ve been looking into a disappearance of a young man. It's not officially my case, but the young man is rather high profile.” Truly noticing Isabella, he bowed again. “Have I interrupted something, Daiki-san? I was surprised to see you that I missed this beautiful young lady with you.”

Demyan glanded at Isabella beside him and then smiled toward Taro with a shake of his head, “We were going to get a bite to eat on our layover, that’s all.” He squeezed her fingers in his own, as they had been walking hand in hand along the pathway. “Taro, let me introduce my wife, Isabella. Isabella, this is Taro...a… long-standing acquaintance of mine. We have worked together from time to time.” He nodded toward the tall Japanese man, “You don’t usually handle kidnappings and disappearances, Taro. This must be big.”

Taro gave a slight wince at Chameleon’s words. “It’s more than just big. It’s bad enough to warrant all planes being checked for smuggled items. I know you’ve handled cases like these, Daiki. Do you think you could help me with this one? I wouldn’t ask, but as I said, this one is rather unusual.” He got an idea. “I know a wonderful place that we can talk and you can get something to eat while we talk. I don’t want to get too detailed in the middle of this crowd.” His voice dropped and one word was whispered. “Yakuza.”

Demyan was about to answer with regards to their plane and cargo, but checked himself when Taro suggested instead that he take them to a place he knew of to speak more privately about matters related to this high-profile disappearance case. Chameleon wasn’t actively working these international cases of course, though he did regularly act as a consultant to his contacts and local police forces when necessary. He sighed, but nodded, feeling that that this was big enough he should at least get a handle on it. If it had Taro worried this much, it could have far-reaching consequences. “By all means, lead on. Anything you recommend would be fine.” He paused, “As long as you don’t mind me talking some shop over lunch, dear…”

Isabella smiled at her husband. “You know that’s what you live for, other than me. Helping rescue others, whether by action or word. If you can help Taro-san, then I think you should. And I’ll give any input I can to help,” she said as Taro bowed to them and lead the way to a nearby restaurant, Touchou Toshomen. The waiter showed them to a table in the back where they could have some privacy to talk and quickly bowed to Taro. “Anata no itsumo no Kat? tantei? (Your usual, Detective Katou? - Japanese)” Taro smiled and answered, “Hai. Soshite, kono kappuru wa nani mo nozonde imasu. Ayumu no tabu de. Shui wa sugu ni sore o shiharau tame ni koko ni imasu. (Yes. And anything this couple wants as well. On Ayumu's tab. Shui will be here to pay it shortly. - Japanese)” Isabella smiled at the waiter, her usual high wattage model smile, the one that Chameleon knew meant nothing at all. She ordered for herself and Chameleon, “Yakitori, onigiri, gy?don no 2 shurui. Watashi no tame no otto to Sakurai no tame no Amazaki. Arigat?. (Two orders of Yakitori, onigiri and Gyudon. Amazaki for my husband and sakurayu for me, please. Thank you. - Japanese)”

Sitting in the back of the restaurant, with their backs to the walls and a full line of sight was simple procedure for most law enforcement agencies...it was also just smart. The kind of enemies that would come after people like Demyan and Taro-san were the ones you wanted to see coming in advance. Demyan let Isabella order, she knew what he liked, and as the waiter walked away he turned his attention back to Taro, “I’m on a mission as well right now, Taro-San, but you know I’m always willing to help. I hope you shall not have to search our plane, however as he we have some rather...delicate, goods onboard, if you understand.”

Taro nodded, understanding the business end of things. “I’ll put down that I searched it myself, Daiki-san. I know you wouldn’t have him, and I know what you have is most likely what you need on your current mission. When we leave here, I’ll walk you back to your plane and spend a few minutes there, ‘searching’ it. I have to make it look legit.” He pulled out a picture from his wallet that he pulled out from within the loose kimono-style shirt he had on. “This is the young man that’s missing. He’s 18 and a shibari master already. He’s also family to members of the Yakuza.” He paused, then gave Chameleon a wry smile. “He’s a member as well, as am I. Our father had four sons, three by his mistresses and one by his wife. Ayumu is his legitimate son, while Kenshin, Shui and I are all his illegitimate sons. Kenshin is the missing young shibari master, and I don’t know what Ayumu will do if he doesn’t come home safe.”

“So the missing Shibari master is your half-brother?” He asked, deftly taking the picture and examining the photo of the smiling young man within. Demyan suddenly felt a little old. He had seen more photos like this than he really wanted to think about, sitting in police precincts around the world for years on end, talking to the families of victims and the police helping them. It was just the sort of photo that would be shown on a poster 5, 6 and seven years down the line when the investigation turned up nothing and he was never found…. If that was the fate of this young man. He committed the photo to memory and handed it back, “How was he taken? Do you have any leads at all? You evidently believe that he has either already been taken from Japan, or he will be soon.”

Isabella took the picture before Taro could. “Let me send this to the two C’s, bébé (babe - French). They can start looking into this while we’re on the next leg of this flight and she might be able to find something while you guys are taking care of the mission.” She lifted her camera and snapped a picture of the picture and texted it to Crypto. “There we go. If anyone can find anything about him, it would be those two. They’re both génies (geniuses - French).” She handed back the photo to Taro, who took it and slid it back into his wallet and tucked it into his kimono-like top. “We discovered he was missing 2 days ago, when he didn’t show up for his Shibari exhibition. Ayumu talked to him two days before that. But he always took the day before an exhibition to collect his thoughts and plan out his art, and we never bother him the day before. So sometime between when Ayumu last talked to him and the exhibition was when he vanished - between 2 and 4 days ago. He’s 18, so it’s not as much manpower looking for him as if he’d been younger. But Ayumu sent a message to the emperor, saying that if the government didn’t start doing something, he would replace everyone in power. And when the head of the Yakuza says something like that… well, today is the result - more folks out looking for Kenshin and planes being inspected for contraband - human, drugs and arms.” The waiter came and placed their meals in front of them, then backed away.

“Good idea.” Demyan acknowledged Isabella, letting her take the photograph from his fingers and send it to C&C. He waited for her to finish and hand it back, and listened to all that Taro had to say regarding the kidnapping and what was going to be done about it. Evidently this really was a big deal, if the kidnapped boy was the half-brother of the Yakuza boss, and he was threatening political ramifications. Demyan knew that Shibari was an art form in and of itself, not only used in BDSM porn and erotic photoshoots. He had vaguely been aware that there were even exhibitions revolving around it, but not how big of a deal they were. Chameleon shook his head, “2 and 4 days is a long stretch. They have to be professionals if they were able to kidnap the brother of a Yakuza boss, unless it’s just coincidence that they took him. If they are smart, and they have to be, he’s out of the country already, that’s the reality of this. In my experience you have two days tops to find a kidnapped person before they are ‘in the wind’. Though that usually applied to women, or femmes, and children, especially those sold into the slave trade. So we must ask ourselves ‘why’, if there has been no ransom note.” He paused, closing his eyes and thinking, imagining, trying to put himself into a place he had never been. He constructed in his mind a plausible setting, a dojo perhaps. He imagined the young man in the photograph practicing his ties and knots, perhaps having one or two or three female models with him, willingly letting him practice his art and forms on them. He imagined masked professional men storming the room and kidnapping the boy, “A couple of questions. Did he know martial arts, I’m going to assume he did… and was anyone with him? Did he use live models, women friends or servants, to practice on?”

Taro watched Chameleon, then gave a single nod, not in answer to his questions, but in greeting to someone who just came in the door. “He knows kendo and kenp?. Kenp? is a mix of arts, but his specialty is kendo, a sword-fighting specialty within the martial arts. If he’d had a sword on him, he could have fought them off, but he wasn’t at home when he went missing. He followed his usual routine before a show, which was combing through the clubs for women, or young adults, that would be interested in being one of his rope models for the show. He found a few, as we found out the day of the show, though he wasn’t there. We don’t know if he met whoever it was at one of the clubs or if they grabbed him from the streets. We have people going through the security tapes from each of the clubs he went to the night he disappeared, but there are six clubs he went to, and each one has twenty-plus cameras that they have to sift through for images of him.” Just then, another young man came up to the table, a blue silk tank top over his chest with just a black leather jacket over that. His long black hair was pulled back into a ponytail, though he did have two thin braids on the left side that were pulled back into the ponytail, which was secured by a studded black leather hair tie. His eyes were hidden behind dark sunglasses. “Taro. Ayumu wants an update. What is being done to find our brother?” It looked like the male’s attention was solely on Taro, but he was watching both Chameleon and Isabella at the same time.

“This thread is thin, my friend.” Demyan acknowledged as Taro laid out what they had and what they were doing to try and find out where the young man had disappeared from, and to. He shook his head, “It’s a very slim chance, but we’ve worked on slimmer ones before. If the footage doesn’t turn up anything, you’ll need to start reaching out to other countries and task forces to get boots on the ground in popular travel destinations from here.” He paused when the other man joined them at the table. Demyan knew that he and Isabella were being observed behind the dark glasses he wore, but he said nothing. Taro sighed, not liking what Daiki-san was telling him, but knowing that he had already suspected as much. “I was just touching base with one of my consultants.” he told the other male, gesturing toward Demyan, “He has helped me many times before and he is an expert in these cases. Of course the search is ongoing at the clubs, but it is slow going.”

Isabella looked to Taro and nodded. “Our DarkWeb specialists are looking into searching for anything regarding Kenshin. Or rather, they will be as soon as we get back to the jet. I don't see Cat leaving anyone in the hands of kidnappers. Not after what her family's been through.” Shui looked at the two of them closer, raising a hand to remove the sunglasses after his gaze sought out Demyan. “Are you able to help us look for my brother? I’d be more than willing to help you with your current case in return for your help finding Kenshin.”

Demyan appraised Shui with a glance born from many years of experience, then he nodded, “I used to be an agent for international task forces. I’m known for being good at tracking down people, but even more so for blending in and going undercover. I’ve got a lot of contacts. Yes, I’m willing to help find your brother, but this mission I’m on is already first priority. As soon as it’s over I can lend my aid full time.” He paused, looking to Taro, then back, “I...would accept your help, but I have to speak to my commander first. If you come with Taro and I back to the plane after lunch, we can see what goes down.”

Taro smiled and nodded, loving the solution to the problem at hand. “I think it would be wonderful, if it works out.” His phone rang and he sighed. “Excuse me for a moment.” Rising from the table, he moved to the side a bit and answered the call, lifting the phone to his ear as he said, “Kon'nichiwa? (Hello? - Japanese)” He listened for a moment, then shook his head in frustration. “Watashi wa jibun jishin de sono hik?ki o kensaku suru sewa o surudeshou. Karera ni pairotto to j?kyaku dake o nokosu y? ni tsutaemasu. Aruiwa, watashi wa fu fukuj? no tame ni sorera o kakimasu. (I will take care of searching that plane myself. Tell them to leave the pilot and passengers alone. Or I will write them up for insubordination. - Japanese)” Returning to the table, he sighed. “We might have to get our food to go. The fools are trying to search your plane as we speak. Your pilot is adamant that they wait until the owner gets there.” Isabella gives a wry chuckle. “They must have pissed Ace off, then. She’d never subject the owner to dealing with people,” she said, shaking her head as she pictured what the fallout would be if that happened.

Demyan nodded as Taro returned to the table and spoke. He pushed himself to his feet and Isabella did as well. She called for the waiter so that they could get their food to go, and meanwhile Chameleon spoke with Taro and Shui, “As I said, I will speak with my superior regarding Shui accompanying us on this mission, but I think it will be acceptable. I will fill you both in on the details after we get back to the plane and get everything sorted out.” It seemed that Isabella had gotten the waiter to bring them some carryout cartons for the food they had ordered, and everything was boxed up and ready to go, so they gathered their things and headed out.

Isabella tucked herself against her husband, her arm around his waist as she held the bag with their food in it as they headed back to the plane. As they neared, they saw the ruckus going on and Taro left to go deal with it. Shui kept pace with the couple, heading to the stairs as Taro lit into the three officers below. “J?shi ni kiku h?h? o shiranai nodesu ka? Watashi wa kono hik?ki dake o nokosu tame ni mess?ji o h?s? shimashita. Watashi wa sore o jibun de shori shite imashitaga, koko ni wa hik?ki ni norou to shite imashita. Yakunin Miyamoto Takumi to yamazaki naoki yakuin wa dochira mo yoi to omoimasu. Anata wa izen watashitoisshoni shigoto o shite kimashita. Mizushima Koharu yakuin, anata wa kono butai no shoshinshadesuga, j?shi ni igiwotonaeru yori mo yoku shitte okubekidesu. Kono hik?ki o hanareru. Watashi wa sore o jibun de kensaku shimasu. (Do you not know how to listen to your superiors? I broadcast the message to leave this plane alone and I would handle the search of it myself, and yet, here you are, trying to board this plane, AFTER being told to let it be and being asked to wait. Officer Takumi Miyamoto and Officer Naoki Yamazaki, you both should have known better. You've worked with me before. Officer Koharu Mizushima, you are new to this task force, but you should know better than to disobey your superior officer. Leave this plane. I will search it myself. - Japanese)”

The officers that were reprimanded looked sheepish, glancing among themselves, and two of them moved off without another word. The eldest of them, Officer Takumi, bowed deeply and answered back, “Watashi wa ch?do h?s? o jushin shimashita. Anata wa, watashitachi no sench? ga, fusei-sha no haki o fusegu tame ni, hitori no yakunin ga kensaku surubekide wa nai to itta koto o shitte imasu.” (I only just received the broadcast. You know that our captain said that no single officer should search, to prevent any shred of impropriety. - Japanese)” He paused, “Shikashi, watashi wa kare ga anata no tame ni reigai o tsukuru to kakushin shite imasu, s?. (But I am sure that he will make exception for you, Sir. - Japanese)” And with that he bowed again and backed away, turning on his heel to join the rest of the men and move on to the next plane.

Radar, who was still standing nearby as guard until the whole thing was overturned and raised an eyebrow at Demyan and then Taro, “I don’t know who you are, stranger, but evidently you’re in charge. Thanks for getting them off our backs. Can you tell us what this is all about anyway? None of them would say, beyond they had orders to search every plane on the runways, coming or going…. And I’m sorry but the owner isn’t here yet to give the OK.”

Isabella dug out her phone again and texted the young couple currently going on a shopping spree in the airport. Crypto, you guys might want to hurry back. We got a sitch here. Cat is needed plane side ASAP. It has to do with that picture I sent you a little while ago. At the same time, Taro was answering Radar, being slightly vague due to the lack of privacy on the tarmac. “I have no problem waiting on the owner. Daiki and I go way back, working on cases together. Imagine my surprise to see him, just when I have a case that could use his expertise. And my sorrow when he told me he has a current case he’s working on. Hopefully, the current case is resolved and I can tap into his expertise. Especially since I believe the two cases are similar in nature. I can’t go into more detail on the tarmac, but when we’re able to go on board, I will be more forthcoming about the situation.”
