The Party - Need for Fun
Dawn and Rob have been having a rough time recently, and need to do something to relieve some stress. Maybe that party has exactly what they need, but Rob just got home from work, and there's a lot of "adulting" to still do in the day. That doesn't mean they can't make their own fun, right?
This is an old anonymous commission I did back in the day, brought to SoFurry for the first time. If you'd like to commission me, check out my Commission Information.
The boy jubilantly rush out of the scene, leaving wife some alone time with her husband, but Rob slams the door of his car and shakes his head.
“You’re home early,” Dawn says. “You didn’t even think to call?”
“What?” Rob blinks at her, his eyes staring right past her for a moment. He then shakes his head and apologizes, “No, sorry. Things got pretty hectic at work.”
Dawn places a hand upon his shoulder and pulls him in toward the house. “Nothing too bad, I hope?”
“Nah, I mean. It’s just the same old shit, you know?” He says, following her inside. “Day in, Day out… I think I need a nap.”
“A nap? Come on. You’re not an old man, not yet!”
“Ha, I’m not 20 anymore.”
“You’re not that far past 30,” Dawn corrects. “Come with me,” she says, holding his hand now and leading him over towards the living room. There, she sets Samantha in her bouncer and then pulls Rob down onto the love seat and sits next to him, patting his lap. “You are having a rough time, I get it. It’s got to be really rough if you’re leaving work early and frustrated. Maybe you need to take that vacation or something?”
“As if Bill would let me have a vacation,” Rob says. “He doesn’t know how to run that place. One sign of the project getting bumpy, and he sends us all home with not so much as another word. Said it was to help improve morale. I think it’s because he’s trying to boink his secretary.”
Dawn frowns. “Oh, well, at least you’re paid salary, right?”
“Yeah, I guess. But the job should be mine and there’s absolutely nothing I can do about it. He’s in too deep with the board, and if they haven’t fired him yet, it’ll take a miracle to get rid of him.”
“Really? Because to me it sounds like he’s one major slip up away from being thrown out of there forever.”
“Yeah, well, there’s nothing I can do about it, except pick up the slack on for the rest of the team. Now, I guess I should get some work done. See you, babe.” He pushes himself up, but Dawn reaches out, grabbing his wrist. He pauses and looks back to her, quirking an eyebrow. “Something the matter?”
“You know… you don’t owe Bill a damn thing, but you owe yourself, and you owe me.”
“What are you talking about?” He asks, tugging his hand free. What’d I do this time?”
“You didn’t do anything, but you’re going to work yourself to death!” she says, standing up. She weaves her fingers through his hair and looks deeply into his blue eyes. “Rob, you’re going to make yourself go gray with all this work. You need to sit back, relax, and have fun.”
He brings his hands to her sides and smiles. “I do have fun. It’s called spending time with you,”
She giggles slightly and brings her lips to his, brushing them gently before pulling away. “You know very well that sitting around at home and relaxing after a long day of work isn’t ‘fun.’ There’s a difference.”
“I sense a transition coming along here. What do you have planned?”
“Trisha’s hosting a party next weekend. I thought maybe we should actually check it out.”
“A party? Eh, I don’t know,” Rob says, “I mean, won’t it be all hoity toity?”
“That’s the thing, babe,” she says with a wink. “She says it’s going to be a wild college-style party, complete with booze and loud music.”
“You’re kidding!”
“Come on, we’re going to party like its 2005, and no one’s going to stop us. How does THAT sound?
“It sounds crazy enough to work,” he says, rubbing his chin. “I guess I could be persuaded…”
“Oh, yeah? And what will persuade you?” she asks.
“I dunno. Still got some of your outfits from 2005?” “Only if you got yours.”
“As if I could wear them still.”
“You think I can after two kids!?”
They laugh and Rob pokes his wife in the side, curling his fingers and tickling her
“W… wah, hey c-cut it out, what are you doing!?”
“Acting like a kid again!” he said, pushing her down into the couch.
“Haha, getting into character, well two can play at that game!” The married couple roll around on the couch, poking and tickling
each other, all the while laughing and having a great time. Eventually, they both fall on the floor with a loud thump!
Joshua runs up to see what his parents are doing, only to find them both on the ground, their hair tussled, their clothing all bunched up and wrinkled. Rob quickly flattens his hair and sits up. “Don’t you worry about your mom and dad. When you get to be adults, you’ll find out you can still play like kids once in awhile, but you got to know when it’s too much, okay?”
Dawn pushes his shoulder and stands up. “I’m going to whip up us some dinner.”
“Not without me, you’re not,” he shouts, scurrying along after her.
“No, you’re going to burn everything!”
“But you’re going to put too much spice in!”
“Come on, Josh. Bring your sister. Let’s all make something
together!”
And so, the two join their son and their daughter for some family fun.
The time for the party finally arrives. Dawn stands in her bedroom, looking over a few outfits that she has for such occasions. She taps her foot as she impatiently looks between a black party gown and a simple t-shirt and shorts.
Rob steps through the bedroom, carrying his toiletries and laughs. “Didn’t she say this was supposed to be like some kind of college party? Just go with what your inner party girl says.”
“I know, I know, but I’m not sure if I’m too casual or too formal with either of these.”
Rob kisses her cheek, then heads into the bathroom. “Just call Trisha. I’m sure she’ll let you know what’s the most appropriate.”
