A Reality of Advancement

Part 1

For Nataraj

By Draconicon

Today was the day of the big merge, and Lexi's only hope was that the new bosses and supervisors were as understanding as the last batch. After all, not many places would have made it that comfortable for her down in the south; having people that not only understood but embraced her made everything so much simpler. Anxiety, once a mental roommate that she'd thought she'd kicked to the curb, had moved back in with the worst of keg parties, keeping her up all night long.

She groaned as she trundled to the bus stop, feeling more and more self-conscious with every step. Had she remembered to shave her legs today? Style her hair right? It wasn't coming apart at the ends, was it? Dye in place? Make-up – fuck, make-up.

Shaking her head, she leaned against the sign for the bus-stop, looking at herself with the usual overly critical eye. Flaw in the mascara, but too late to fix that. Lashes were a little thin on one side, the blush – oh, why had she decided to go with that shade today? It wasn't right for the sort of bright colors that she was going for. Ugh!

The bus was just out of sight, barely visible. She looked at herself again, and then sighed. It would have to do. Hopefully it was a temp driver today.

It was. He gave her a look, then blinked as she walked by, but she was already hustling to one of the seats at the far end of the bus. Her stop was the terminus, and that meant that she could just hide and keep her head down for a while. Not the way that she wanted to spend her morning, but anxiety was a-screaming in her head, and no matter how much she tried to negotiate with it, the stupid thing wouldn't shut up.

They're going to see your paperwork, and then it won't matter if you look the part or not. The new company's kicking you out on your ass, and you'll be unemployed, no references, no money, no –

Lexi was on the verge of slamming her head against the bar when her phone beeped at her. Her hands shook as she pulled it from her blouse pocket, and she put in the wrong passcode twice before she managed to get it right. Text from work, text from the old supervisor that was stepping down as part of the merge. She flicked it open.

Hey, Lexi, just wanted to wish you good luck. Been great working with you for the last year, and hope you keep killing it every day. Put in a good word for you before I left, but you know how it goes. DFTBA!

She smiled despite herself. The old supervisor had been one of those white-haired geezers that you always expected to hate anything technological, but Jared had been one of those guys that was always interested in finding the best way forward for the office. Always open to good ideas, always open to trying things differently, and one of the best screamers that she'd ever found. He went to bat for his people every day when the big bosses tried to come down on them with the hard and fast 'traditional' way of doing things, and she'd seen him go from white to red through the windows as he roared at them.

It was a real pity that she was going, but at least he'd said something. She hoped that it would be good enough to keep her employed.

Wiping her eyes, she drowned her sorrows in memes and happy lizard pictures for the next half hour as the bus made its way through town and towards its final destination. When the bus lurched to a full stop with a bit more force than usual, she knew that they'd arrived. One deep breath in, one deep breath out, and the phone went back in her pocket. She shouldered her purse, walked down the bus aisle, and avoided the head-cock and confused gaze of the bus driver as she stepped off the vehicle.

Time to go to work.

She looked up at the building. The skyscraper dominated the plaza around it, and until today, it had been the largest independent shipping company in the city. The warehouses were somewhere else, but this was where they did all the order processing, finance management, and – most importantly – legal battles with the other companies that were more international. They were regularly fighting with the big Northwest company, and with its lower-ranking competitors just to stay in business. It had worked for a while, but…

Well, all good things come to an end. Lexi sighed.

Goodbye, Ship with a Skip, and hello…whatever we're called now.

The sign was slowly coming down from over the front door. They'd almost been buried with the last court case that the bigger players had sent their way. Survived the judgment, yes, but they had spent so much money fighting the patent case for certain delivery shipments and packing devices that they might as well have lost. They'd been forced to look for buyers that might keep the company almost the same as it had been, and it hadn't gone well. For nearly two months, it had seemed like the bigger players had scared off anyone that might have been willing to join forces with them.

Then, out of the blue, several mystery investors popped in. None of them were known to the lower rank and file employees like her, but Lexi had heard rumors that they were less than savory. Not that sweet, either, from what she heard. A bit of risky business, but it was better than going under or selling to the enemy.

Today was the first day under new management, and from the fact that most of the employees were gathered in the open-plan lobby of the skyscraper, she had a sinking feeling that there was some sort of sorting going on.

Don't give me my walking papers, don't give me my walking papers…

Lexi walked up behind one of the other date-entrants from her particular office pool, tapping him on the shoulder. Gerald looked over his shoulder, smiled.

“Hey, Lexi. What's going on?"

“I wanted to ask you that. Why's everyone down here?"

“Oh, just get here?"

“Yeah. Bus just pulled up."

“No wonder you hadn't heard. There's been an expansion below-ground. We're getting our own apartments in the building."

“…What?"

“Yeah. Apparently, the new bosses want to experiment with live-in employees."

Her mouth fell open at that. Living and working at the same place felt like a short trip to a mental breakdown, and she could almost feel Anxiety eagerly looking forward to the possibility of that kind of demolition. She shook her head.

“I can't. What about rent? What about everything I have at home?"

“Corporate bonuses or some shit," Gerald said, shaking his head. “All I've heard. Sorry, Lexi."

She was breathing hard. Too hard. She was going to pass out if she wasn't careful, and –

Well, no, that wasn't accurate. She was going to pass out. No ifs, ands, or buts. Her vision sparkled at the corners of her eyes, and then she tilted backwards.

#

She woke up again, this time with her hair scattered across her face. She knew that she wasn't in the company nursing office, if only because the ceiling was way too colorful for that. Even she might have been a bit off with that kaleidoscope of color, though…on second thought, maybe not. Just a little more of a vortex, and –

“What am I doing?" she muttered, rubbing her face. “Ugh…is someone there?"

Nobody answered, which at least meant that she wasn't going to be joined in her humiliation by some fellow employee, paying witness to her breakdown. Well, it had been a long time coming, she supposed. Not much to be said about that. Shaking her head, she tried to sit up. She half-succeeded, only to slump back down as everything went limp all at once.

“…Uhhhhh…"

“Please remain where you are."

“…Okay, either I'm completely losing my mind, or there's a disembodied voice speaking to me."

“I am your room assistant. You may call me [InsertNameNow]."

“…Can I call you Clara?" she asked.

“Certainly, ma'am. Shall I take the surname Oswald?"

“Um…ask me again when my head's not spinning…"

“As you wish, ma'am. Do you have any questions or orders for me?"

“Yeah…why can't I get up?"

“You will be able to move soon, ma'am. You are currently restrained under corporate orders. It is to ensure that you are not damaged from your fainting reaction. It is for your own good."

Lexi nodded slowly. Well, she moved her head against the pillow. That probably counted enough for the robot voice. She rubbed her forehead, then paused, feeling something different. She reached her hand up a bit further, rubbing right at the base of her extensions, where they would normally have been anchored.

Except there was no anchor point. Nothing at all. Just…natural hair.

“Uh…uh…"

Another freak-out was rising in her, though this time it was a little bit different than the last one. She fumbled through her hair, trying to find where the extensions had gone, why they weren't where she thought they were, why –

No matter how she fumbled about, there was nothing to find. Her hair was just as long as it had been with the extensions, but there was nothing to show that she had been wearing them. They were just…naturally long.

“My sensors detect that your heartrate is rising, Lexi."

“It…probably is. I think I'm losing my mind."

“I can assure you that your neurons are firing precisely as intended, Lexi."

“You're sure? One hundred percent?"

“Within the acceptable 0.02% margin for error."

“Okay…okay…"

So, she wasn't losing her mind, but she had gotten longer hair. Another mystery, another little thing that she'd need to figure out later, but at least it was something that was actually happening and she wasn't just imagining it. That was a hell of a lot better than the alternative.

Ding, ding, ding.

Her phone was going mad, and she groaned. It was her afternoon alarm, which meant that she'd been out for a long time. She reached for it, shut it off, and address the ceiling again.

“Uh, Clara? I need to sit up for this."

“For your medication, ma'am?"

“How did you know that?!"

“Former Supervisor Jared left notes with his successor regarding your current state. Your transition meds have been filed with your new superior, as is your schedule. This has been done to ensure that you have the proper workload to keep you from being distracted from your transition."

“So…everyone knows?"

“No. Merely your supervisor. But your transition will be sped up soon enough."

“What's that supposed to mean?!"

“You may wish to sit up. I am producing a mirror on the far wall, now."

That didn't sound good, but at least she was allowed to sit up. As Lexi levered herself up, she caught little details. The chamber was a single room, save for a bubble on her right that she assumed functioned as a shower/toilet. The room itself was warmer than she expected, probably in the low 80s, and she could feel comfortable without having to bundle up. Other than that, the room was about twenty feet across, formed a perfect circle, and seemed more like a place someone was expected to move into rather than anything else.

Then she saw the mirror, and her eyes went wider still. Her hands went to her chest, hardly daring to believe –

“Ah!"

She yanked her hands back. They were real. They were real. Not just the fake padding that she wore trying to get used to the weight, or the little silicone cutlets that she'd put under her shirt to start embracing her feminine side. They were real. And freaking sensitive, too. Ow.

Biting her lips as she got used to the feeling of actually having breasts – admittedly not even quite b-cups, but still, breasts – she slowly pulled herself up. There was no sign of having been undressed, nothing to show that she had had her clothes or other stuff removed. Yet, here she was, bare under her shirt, and she could feel that her skirts were a bit…cramped around the hips, and they had been very roomy on the walk to the bus.

“What…how…"

“Your new employers have decided to improve morale by improving the reality of the workplace," Clara said.

“What does that mean? I mean…I guess there are improvements, but – wait. What do you mean, the reality of the workplace?"

“K. L. Inc. is proud to bring both magical energy and cutting-edge technology to bear in order to improve the workplace experience. This is the beginning of your new life within the company."

That was a non-answer if she'd ever heard one, but at least it was something. She looked at herself in her reflection again, touching her face, then running her hands down her sides. Everything felt impossible. She'd only just started her transition, barely been able to get on the first doses for hormone blockers and replacements, so she shouldn't have this level of change already. It felt like she had been on it for months, but this was just a few hours of growth. A few hours of change.

She wanted to ask how this had been done, but she knew better than to open her mouth and ask. Clara was being nice, but she doubted that the assistant had much in the way of actually helpful dialogue at the moment. Instead, she looked at her chest, lifted her breasts slightly through her shirt, and just…smiled.

“You will face further changes over the course of the workday. We hope that you will be pleased with your new you."

“If it's anything like this, I'm sure I – wait." Lexi paused, slowly looking up at the ceiling. “What if someone notices?"

“At the request of upper management, you will be the only one that notices the changes as of this point."

“Why?"

“I am unable to answer that question. I'm sorry."

“You know, I really mean no offense, but you aren't that good at your job, are you?"

“I'm new. I am only recently created."

“Oh. Sorry."

“Apology accepted. Would you like a door, Lexi?"

“Yes, please. I need some air. Badly."

#

The new underground floors of the company were as strange as Lexi's new quarters were. Rather than the clear-glass walls that she was used to seeing moving from department to department on the upstairs levels, she found herself confronted with steel walls, shimmering with reflections on all sides. It felt very futuristic, but there was something off about it, something that didn't quite feel right.

Maybe it was the fact that she was always surrounded by reflections, and considering that she had never entirely liked how she looked, she didn't like seeing distorted versions of herself as she walked along. Yeah. That was probably it.

Of course, the other employees didn't seem to have an issue with it. As she walked along coworkers that she barely knew by sight, and many that she didn't know at all, she could hear them talking about all the different changes as if they were the best things in the world. Most of them were chattering about how they'd like living at the company, how their quarters were nice and roomy, and if the company was willing to pay for this, what else were they willing to pay for?

Yet, there was something else, something that she couldn't entirely put her finger on that was off, and she was starting to feel more and more frustrated. She liked to know what the situation was, and much as she liked a puzzle, she preferred to have at least a small clue to take her along to the solution.

She followed the flood of people upstairs, making her way to the new elevators – probably triple the old number – and rode with them to the upper levels. She stepped out at the company cafeteria, only to go bug-eyed at the sight of all the new restaurants that dotted the far end of the room.

And here I thought we were spoiled for choice before…

What had been a choice between cardboard pizza, cardboard chicken, cardboard sandwiches, and salad had turned into a proper food court ranging across eight different cuisines, with twice that in store fronts. Half were street-food style food, while the rest was upper-scale food of the same cuisine. Lexi stuttered, sputtering under her breath as she stared at the complete transformation that the cafeteria had undergone in literally less than twenty-four hours.

This was past the point of generosity. The underground chambers had been difficult to process, but she could just about understand that happening without the other employees noticing if the buyers were sneaky enough. This? This was impossible. COMPLETELY impossible.

“Hey, you're finally up again. You okay?"

She turned at Gerald's voice, hoping to have some sanity, only to freeze up again. What Clara had mentioned – that she was the only one that would notice the changes – suddenly hit her harder than before. Why? Because Gerald wasn't human anymore.

He wasn't entirely something else, yet. His face was still partially his own, and the deep brown that she was used to seeing over her cubicle wall was still there, but one ear had grown out, looking almost like a dog's ear, and she could see that it was covered by white fur. White, with black spots, almost like –

Dalmatian.

She didn't know how that came to her when everything else had ceased making sense. Her expression must have changed, because he leaned in, grabbing her shoulder.

“You okay? Not going to faint again, are you?"

“N-no."

“Come on. Let's grab some food. It'll do you good."

Allowing herself to be led by the hand, Lexi looked up and down the cafeteria. Now that she was paying attention, she saw multiple people starting to sport animal features. Some of them were already further transformed than Gerald was, with one man from security growing horns out the sides of his head and bulging in his shoes. She didn't know if that meant that his feet were growing or if that was just hooves coming in, but –

Impossible, impossible, impossible.

Anxiety fought confusion, which left her with just shock as a companion. Thankfully, that was quite a bit easier to deal with, and she was able to just keep walking along, getting herself a salad with extra lettuce – she didn't feel like meat today – and followed Gerald to a table. He sat down –

RIIIP!

And just like that his pants ripped. She had a chance to see that he was growing a tail, something longer and spindly rather than something big and fluffy, then she sat down, too. She looked down at her hands, half-afraid that she'd see a change of her own, and – yes, she did. Gray tones were spreading across her fingers, and several digits were a bit longer than they should have been. Fatter, too, which made holding the fork harder than it should have been.

Gray? What's gray?

She hadn't studied animals, she didn't know this. What was gray and –

“Gonna eat? I think they got a good balsamic in today," Gerald said.

Eat. Eat, yes, that would probably be a good idea. She bit into the lettuce, forcing it down her throat. It wasn't that easy to eat, though Gerald was right. The balsamic was nice, though it was a little sharp for her taste.

“So, you okay? Didn't hurt yourself fainting?" he asked, his nose slowly turning black as she watched.

“It's…okay. I'm kinda wondering if I'm dreaming sometimes."

“Oh?" He bit into his pizza, one tooth popping out a bit longer than the others, a proper fang. “Why's thaaaaat?"

He didn't even seem to notice that his muzzle was slowly pushing forward, didn't seem to notice his longer tongue or the way that his other ear was slowly lengthening. His shirt was tight on him – but not like it was being stretched, she realized. If anything, it had shrunk, becoming something more geeky, more form-fitting rather than something that stood out so much as before.

Even as the transformation spread over him, gradually narrowing his shoulders – he was going to be a narrow dog, lean and – oh god, that was weird. She could feel her nose stretching, feeling out of place on her face. It was gradually smoothing out and widening, elongating and wrinkling. She rubbed it, almost like she was scratching an itch, and the whole thing just dropped over her lips.

Trunk. Elephant.

Which meant big.

Which meant other things were going to grow.

Which meant either her clothes were going to change, or –

Lexi grunted as she felt the sudden clench in her skirt again, and knew that it had to be the growth that she had noticed earlier. Something was getting big down there, and whether it was her butt or a tail or something with her thighs –

How am I going to fit into stockings after this?

It was the sheer stupidity and inane oddness of that little thought that finally broke her. With a trunk slowly creeping down her face, she broke down in a giggle, and then into a deep laugh that ended up with her face-down against the cafeteria table. Her eyes ran with water, and the mascara started running with it. It'd be the perfect look for a badger, but she could already feel it getting caught in the little wrinkles in her new, leathery skin.

Her ears were slowly folding outwards, getting rounder and thinner. She was picking up little chatter from everywhere else, but was surprised that there were no comments about her. Instead, it was just the usual mundane work chatter.

Only Gerald seemed to notice she wasn't quite herself. He leaned over, pushing her upright as she kept cry-giggling.

“Okay, what's the matter, Lexi?"

“I don't know…I can't really describe it…It's just…"

“Surreal?"

“Kinda."

“Yeah…who woulda thought this would have happened, right?"

He was just talking about the food and the new stuff that the employees were being given, but she pretended that he meant the other changes, too. She sniffled and nodded.

“Yeah, who woulda thought…who woulda –"

RIIIIIP!

For a split second, she thought that had been her clothes, but then the sound repeated again and again. The sound of ripping cloth echoed through the cafeteria, and she whipped her head around to try and see what it was. There were tails ripping free throughout the room, but that wasn't the only source of the sound. Shoes were tearing here and there, too, but that was incidental, not universal. It wasn't until she saw someone walking back from the pizza counter that she realized what it was.

RIIIIIP!

Another repeat of the sound, and a pink-mottled shaft dropped down, horse-shaped, and completely exposed to the public at large. Lexi stared at it open-mouthed, her cheeks going as red as they possibly could as she whipped back around before the balls could follow. She bit her lip, trying not to say something while Gerald looked at her as if she'd gone completely crazy.

“You sure you're okay?"

“Yes. Completely. Fine."

“Um. Maybe you should go back to your room for a bit? Lie down?"

“Yes! Great idea! Thankyousomuchseeyoulater!"

#

Lexi ran into her room with all the speed of a woman fleeing all the forces of panic, insanity, and the other mental problems that she swore were bearing down on her. She slammed the door shut behind her, feeling it fade slightly into the wall as she ran for the mirror. It rose out of the ground at her approach, and she leaned against the wall as she stared at herself.

Her nose had kept growing while she was running, and now it was past her chin, reaching all the way down to her chest. Her shoulders, still with the slight broadness of a man, were starting to push out further than she was entirely comfortable with, but her top stretched with it, keeping them from ripping through. Gray had spread across her face, muting the tones that she'd added with make-up.

Yet, at the same time, there were definite feminine traits to her face. Softer cheekbones, rounder features, bits and pieces that she knew would take forever to get normally, as well as some that would never come save through plastic surgery. She gasped for breath as she stared at herself in the mirror, conflicting feelings of shock, awe, and just a little bit of appreciation flooding through her.

“This…this is…insane…"

Her whispered protest against the violent heaves of reality went ignored, and the changes continued to spread through her. Like the men in the cafeteria, she could feel her clothes ripping in different places. Her panties ripped under her skirt, leaving her with shreds of cloth at her feet, and she gasped as a thin, tufted tail pushed out from the back, lifting the skirt up slightly as she felt her ass pushing back, too. The thick, heavy globes were filling with muscle and fat, adding to the curves that she'd started to get from the medication.

Oh god…oh god…

Fulfillment and shock, shock and fulfillment, and the shock part was slowly dying in comparison to the other feeling that was flooding through her. As her chest pushed forward, the buttons on her shirt started ripping off, eventually breaking to the point where her breasts pushed out. They flopped free, just as that horse dick had done in the cafeteria, and she realized that something had been done to allow them to just hang out in the open. No other damage had been done, just enough to allow her breasts to be exposed, to be seen, to be…

Admired…

She blushed, reaching her hands up to them as they expanded again, and again, pushing forward and then hanging down. Her nipples were big, and the areola wide, making it look like she had very sensitive, almost porno-style breasts and nipples. It was…well, it was about as hyper-feminine as one could get, and she rather loved it.

As she fondled them, shivering at the pleasure that ran down her spine and all the way to her crotch, something else demanded attention. Not that part, but her feet.

“Mmph…ah…"

She was getting more and more turned on the more that the change went on, but as she looked down, she saw that her shoes were getting tighter and tighter. The red high-heels that she'd been wearing were shaking, the raised heels quivering like support beams that were losing out against too much weight. She blushed as she realized that the heel was about to –

SNAP!

She fell back a bit, one shoe and then the other losing the heel, and then the shoes themselves started ripping. Gray soles rapidly expanded outwards, ripping through whatever was in their way, and she gasped as she felt her toes thickening, her feet broadening. They weren't quite flat the way that a wild elephant's feet might have been, but they were rounder and wider than they had any right to be on a person.

As she looked back in the mirror, she realized that the reflective surface had risen with her, getting taller as she had done the same. She blushed as she realized just how much bigger she was than before, staring at the shadow that she cast on the wall.

Then…

Then she felt it. Right between her legs, her old parts started trembling, twitching. She groaned, feeling her balls slowly sagging down, filling and churning with seed such as they hadn't done since she'd started holding off from that sort of fun. They were so full, so eager to be emptied all of a sudden, and they were getting bigger still, rolling around in their sac and filling out.

She reached down, feeling her cock starting to rise, too. She'd slightly questioned whether to keep that, once, but she felt as long as she had the curves and the appearance of a woman, that was enough for her. But now…now she was feeling less on the fence. Keeping it…keeping it felt…good…

Heat rose from her rising, lengthening rod, filling her to the brim. She almost felt like her gray skin should have been turning red from how hot she felt, how warm she was growing. She gripped her cock tighter, squeezing it from base to tip, feeling it filling her hand. So big now, all of her. Thick arms, thicc thighs, big ass, big cock, big balls, big breasts…everything big, big, big like an elephant girl should be.

The changes rippled over her, no longer changing anything, but just adding to what she already had. Her breasts topped out as something bigger than her old head had been, something that would have buried any man between them and smothered him into unconsciousness. Her arms and legs, soft with size but thick with muscle, remained powerful and visible. Her ass was so big that it pushed her new miniskirt right up to the verge of showing off her asshole. She was pretty sure that if she bent forward, it would be completely shown off.

And as for the other intimate parts…

She didn't push herself to climax, but she did look down at herself. For an elephant girl at just over seven feet tall, she had a shaft that was going to put others to shame. Standing at fourteen inches long and with balls that were just barely out of proportion (on the bigger side), she had something that outdid the horse that she'd seen in the cafeteria by some way.

The transformation seemed to complete itself, and she stepped back, marveling at what had happened. Despite the way that reality seemed to have been turned inside-out to make it happen, despite the fact that she was no longer human, she didn't feel nearly as panicked as she felt she should be. If it had happened to everyone else, if everyone in the building had been transformed, did it matter that much if she'd become an elephant?

Suddenly, the order to stay inside the building, the experiment of living there, made sense. Why else would they be doing that, now that their employees were no longer human? They'd need a way to hide them from the rest of the world for a while, until...until...well, until they found some way forward.

Clara beeped at her.

“Ms. Lexi, you are summoned to work. Floor Six."

“Uh, thank you...do I need to -"

“You are fine as you are, Ms. Lexi."

“Okay...thanks…"
