After everyone had left - when she was at last alone - carefully, the female gryphon crept over to the coffin and gently opened the top half that she might look at her beloved - her dearly beloved human mate - one last time.

Oh-so-gently she nuzzled his face, touched her forehead softly to his own. "You fool," she croaked, barely able to make the human-English sounds, "you silly, silly human fool..."

How they'd met was something she'd rather forget; a "noodle incident" where he'd had to untangle her from a human clothesline of all things. She'd been grievously offended and insulted when he'd not only helped her - like one might aid a cripple - but had also petted her and talked softly to her like she'd been a simple animal!

She'd been utterly cold to him at first - curt and brusque - whilst he'd been exuberant, boisterous, loud. She'd been shy of humans, indifferent towards them, but he'd thrown her out of her anti-human shell when he'd introduced her to his friends... the weirdest bunch of humans she'd ever met in her life! Nerds, Larpers, Computer Geeks, HEMA practitioners... if it was weird, they did it and dragged her along despite her squawking.

Among all the crazy... love had bloomed--but now... now it was all over; he'd died due to the stupidest circumstantial accident--and he'd laughed all the way.

Even as the tears flowed freely from her eyes, even as she laughed looking back on it all, she couldn't hold it all back and - despite her strict parental upbringing - she keened like a young chick, letting all her internalized emotions free.

"Did you ever know you were my hero..." she sung to his still form as she wept. "You were everything I'd have liked to be. Once I flew higher than an eagle, 'c-cause you were the wind beneath my w-wiiings..."

The darkest of thoughts filled her head, then: she wished the coffin was bigger, wished she could climb right in there and curl about him--but her time wasn't yet done.

It was not meant to be.
