A small Connecticut town was a seemingly odd choice for the last days of Austin Weber's summer vacation. The choice of venue was hardly Austin's first choice. However, his girlfriend Chandra was moving to this very small town to start college. Not only did she need help moving, but she wanted to spend as much time together before the summer was over. When that time came, they were to essentially break up and remain friends. They both knew a long term relationship was very hard to keep over a long distance. With Austin going back to their home state of Oklahoma to begin his own college career, there would simply be too many hassles that would just be piling on to the already difficult life of a freshman. The decision did not come easy and Austin was more willing to try and make it work than Chandra was. However, Austin still wanted to help his soon to be ex-girlfriend be on her way. Thus he drove the U-Haul up to Connecticut, a journey that took an entire day and night out of the young man.

The couple spent the day unpacking and taking opportunities to travel the New England campus, taking in the beauty of the old architecture and tall trees that enclosed the property. Night fell and Austin knew he would soon have to leave the campus and make the drive back to Oklahoma solo. Chandra decided that she wanted to stroll through the park with him. The park itself was located just outside of the campus, near heavily wooded areas. Immense trees and greenery flourished around a simple cobblestone pathway and a very quaint fountain where many a coin had been tossed.

The moon seemed to glow with a more radiant light than usual on this breezy summer evening. Austin and Chandra walked slowly, hand in hand down the path. There was nobody else around which made the moment seem all the more special to the both of them

"I am going to miss you" Chandra said with a defeated smile.

"I will call you as soon as I get home" Austin said, trying to hold back his emotions more than he probably should have, "in fact, I'll call you every day". His half-joking remark aroused a genuine smile and a giggle from the both of them as they looked into each other's eyes with deep intensity. Without either of them giving a second thought about it, they embraced and began to kiss each other. It was a kiss that was so familiar to the both of them. It was full of sweetness and longing. Then it ended. There was a sense of sadness in the brief silence that followed as they began to walk again.

Suddenly, a small butter-fly like creature was spotted directly in front of Austin's face. It was a brilliant shade of blue and it seemed to have a glow not unlike a lightning bug.

"Oh wow so pretty" Chandra remarked as the two ceased their walking to watch the insect flutter in front of them.

"You don't see those in Oklahoma" Austin said with a laugh before another bug, identical to the other one, suddenly appeared. They fluttered a little closer to him. He playfully swatted them away, not knowing if they were the kind of bug that bit or stung. Indeed they seemed harmless enough. Yet two bugs soon became four. Four became ten. Ten became forty....

Before Austin knew it, a whole slew of the blue glowing bugs were swarming around him. Hundreds of the flying insects began to land upon him. He called out for Chandra to help but she was already hysterically screaming and freaking out. Two bugs landed on his eyes, the glow of their thoraxes blinding him.

At first, all he saw were twinkling stars.

Bright blue streams and rivers of emerald aurorae meandered through a navy sky. Chirping filled his ears as Austin slowly regained consciousness. Unsteadily, he sat up and looked around.

The ethereal lights above made his surroundings easily visible. He appeared to be in some kind of glade. Soft and plush grass, speckled with dew, stood nearly a foot high all around him. On all sides, thick and tall trees rose like sentinels.

Those strange butterflies fluttered around him still, but they kept their distance and were far fewer. This seemed to be their natural environment and they simply flew about on some business that only insects could understand. And all about him, swimming in the sweet-smelling air were specks of light, granting the scenery a fairy tale-esque quality.

It was then that Austin realized he was not alone. Standing, or rather hovering, several feet to his right was one of the stranger sights the boy had witnessed in his young life.

He looked human enough, except for the large blue butterfly wings that sprouted from his back. They were festooned with elegant black patterns and trimmed in gold, much like the wings on the butterflies that fluttered about him. One was resting on his finger and if Austin did not know any better, he could have sworn he was talking to it. Not in the way children would sometimes pretend to speak to animals or inanimate objects; this creature looked like he was having an actual conversation.

Everything about the situation was so surreal that it took him a few moments to note that the other man had blue skin and hair. Blue?! He appeared to be lithe, athletic, and young, clothed in a simple white toga that left one shoulder and both arms bared. A simple golden sash was wrapped snugly about his trim waist and his toga flowed down to just before his knees. His long, sculpted legs flowed down from there, ending in bare feet that floated about three feet from the ground.

As the butterfly on his finger flew away, the dream-like being turned to look in Austin's direction. It pulled some azure strands of its shaggy but well-groomed hair out from in front of its sparkling sapphire eyes. From the look on its face, this creature judged Austin to be the strange one.

"Are you Austin Weber?" the creature asked simply.

Austin rubbed his eyes and gave his head a subtle shake as if he were trying to awaken himself from what could only be a dream. He knew it couldn't be real. He had just been walking with Chandra and now he was here. Maybe he had slipped and fallen. Perhaps he suffered a concussion and was now in a deep coma. Maybe this was a vision brought on by an intense dose of morphine being pumped into his system by doctors at a hospital. All these stray thoughts were racing through his brain as he stared at the strange, blue man in awe for a while. He then realized the stranger was addressing him, asking him a question. For a reason that Austin couldn't explain himself, he answered.

"Yes... I am" he said as he gave his strange surroundings another look around. It was unlike anything he had ever seen before. It almost seemed like something he'd only ever seen in Disney's Fantasia or some kind of fairy tale kids movie from long ago.

"Where am I?" Austin quickly added, "who are you?"

"My name is Lysas," the creature responded with a nod by way of greeting.

"You're not dreaming," he added quickly, seemingly guessing Austin's thoughts. "As for where you are, this is the Kingdom of Tuatha Danann, ruled by His Mystical Highness, King Tuadan."

Lysas let himself touch the ground and slowly walked toward the human. He extended his hand out to help Austin stand. He moved slowly and smiled in an effort to keep the boy from panicking.

"I apologize for the abruptness of your arrival. My friends can be a bit overzealous. There was no real reason for them to swarm you and Chandra. But they always did have a flair for the dramatic."

"I brought you here for rather selfish reasons, I'm afraid. I... I need your help," he finally revealed, suddenly flustered and embarrassed.

At first, Austin was more than a little apprehensive of taking Lysas' waiting hand. He even backed up an inch or two as the blue skinned being approached him. However, he didn't wish to remain laying on the ground, so he extended his own hand to meet Lysas' own.

"Do I know you from somewhere?" Austin asked, more confused that he had been to begin with, "you seem to know me and Chandra..."

The mention of her name made him realize he was alone.

"My god, Chandra!" Austin said with a jump, "where is she? What have you done with her? What do you want with me?" The questions poured out of him like water from a jug.

Lysas backed up a step and held up both hands in a calming gesture. His wings fluttered behind him, showcasing his own anxiety. "She's fine, I promise," he said quickly.

"As a matter of fact, she's walking with you through the park right now. Well, a copy of you anyway. We call them changelings. When I brought you here, we replaced your body with a magical replica. As far as Chandra is concerned, the two of you just got swarmed by the butterflies and are now on your way. See?"

Lysas waved his hand and the air seemed to ripple and churn like water before a small portal appeared from out of nowhere. As Austin looked through the small opening, he saw Chandra and himself laughing nervously and holding hands as they continued their stroll through the wooded path.

"Changelings are perfect replicas. She won't even know the difference."

The portal closed as suddenly as it had opened. "As for how I know you, well, there was your answer. We fey folk can and do often watch humans. The barrier between our two worlds is weaker than most. I haven't watched you but Hermeadan practically never shuts up about you," Lysas continued on.

The blue, winged man suddenly stopped and smiled, running his hands through his hair. "This is probably a lot to take in, isn't it? Maybe I should start at the beginning."

"King Tuadan... is my father. I'm the child of one of his consorts. But since he wasn't the chief consort, I'm out of the line of succession. But my half-brother, Hermeadan, is Prince and heir to the throne of Tuatha Danann."

"Father recently promised Hermeadan's hand in marriage to Telemrion. He is the heir to a rival fey kingdom that we have been fighting for some time now," Lysas continued, his voice faltering as he spoke fast and seemed to be suppressing a sorrowful tone.

"Hermeadan doesn't want to marry Telemrion but Father insists. My brother is dutiful; he will obey our Father when pressed. But he won't be happy and I... I... I love Telemrion," he finished quietly.

"That's why I brought you here, Austin," Lysas said, at first oblivious to the fact that none of this likely made any sense at all to the human. With a start, he realized this and blushed. "You see, Hermeadan has been quite smitten with you for some time now. Ever since he was a boy in fact. He's watched you for years. I thought that if I brought you here to be with him, that would be enough to convince him to defy Father. If he did so, I could be with Telemrion. I know Father will allow Hermeadan to wed you instead. Fairy and human unions are rare but have always led to prosperity for our people."

"You see? Everybody wins!" Lysas finished excitedly. "You get to be with Hermeadan and eventually inherit an entire magical kingdom. I get to wed Telemrion in my brother's place. And my father gets his arranged union and his peace."

Austin could barely keep up with all the information being thrust upon him. He felt like he was suddenly in the middle of a late night cramming session before a surprise test he hadn't yet studied for. As he finally realized that he was no longer in his own world, he began to feel a little lightheaded and weak in the knees. He wasn't prone to fainting but he felt his face get flushed and his heart pouding. This was heavy stuff. He rubbed his face in his hands intensely before moving them backward through his hair to finally rest on his neck. He let out a long and frustrated sigh.

"Uhh... I don't... I don't even know where to start with all this" Austin replied as he looked around again. The place looked somehow even more unreal upon closer inspection. The grass was so green that it was nearly too green. The crisp air was so fresh and sweet that it was almost too fresh and sweet.

"So... you love some guy that your brother is supposed to marry but doesn't want to marry" he started, trying to grip the situation at hand, "but your brother likes me so you want your brother to marry me so you can marry the guy you like?" Austin looked more than a little uninterested.

"Well I hate to break it to you but there's no way I can really help you" he said, "I mean, you can't expect me to marry a guy for one thing and also, I am still in love with Chandra. I know we're taking a bit of a break but I know we are going to get back together eventually".

Lysas looked crestfallen, genuinely surprised that his offer was rejected. "But Hermeadan got so excited when he told me you and Chandra were breaking up. He said you tried to convince her otherwise, but she insisted. She doesn't want to be with you anymore, Austin," Lysas said pleadingly.

"But Hermeadan does. He will be King one day, Austin. And here in Tuatha Danann, you won't age. You can live forever at his side, young and handsome, as chief consort to the ruler of a land so full of wonders you cannot even begin to imagine them," the fairy promised, as if doing his very best to make a sales pitch.

"Please," begged Lysas.

Austin felt a little bad for declining the offer. Lysas seemed like he meant well, after all. But Austin stopped himself short of changing his mind and reversing his refusal.

"It's complicated" he retorted, "she just wants her space because we are going to be so far away from each other but that doesn't mean it's over". He hoped his explanation would spell it out better.

"And like I said, I am not really interested in marrying a guy" Austin added, "if you guys really are watching me like you say you are, you'll know I'm not gay".

Lysas answered him with a grin, “You would be marrying a fairy, NOT a man. Being with a fairy is well beyond anything you have experienced before. Hermeadan would certainly do everything in his power to please and satisfy you. You would be loved and attended to as you live among us in our world. Why, we can even turn you into one of us fey folk, should you so desire.”

“You can have unbelievable power at your fingers” Lysas added before he stood back a few inches as a ring of sprinkling of fairy dust quickly appeared around him. Within seconds, a dazzling gazelle stood in his place.

“Transformation” he said as he quickly changed back to his original form, “not to leave out levitation”. Suddenly he was floating in the air as his wings fluttered. Within seconds, he was hoping from tree to tree high above the human.

“Did I mention that you’d become immortal?" He added, trying to make it sound more and more like a good sales pitch.

"With these powers you can peer into any realm of your choosing” he explained to Austin as he came to land back down by the human’s side, “you can even visit any realm you like as long as the stars are properly aligned”. With a well choreographed wave of his hand, Lysas revealed several different worlds, each containing its own unique inhabitants and creatures the likes of which Austin had surely never seen or imagined before.

"I suppose that if you still don't want to, I can't force you to do it" Lysas said with an audible and genuine sigh.

Austin looked on with awe as the blue fairy displayed some of his inherent skills for him. It happened so quickly and so magically that the human was still not convinced that he wasn't dreaming. Suddenly, the fairy returned to Austin's level and the conversation was turned back to the human.

"Well I don't want to sound ungrateful but..." Austin replied somewhat hesitantly, "I think I would prefer to just go back home and forget this ever happened". He gave a smile, hoping it would cushion the blow of his rejection a little.

"It's not that I don't want to help it's just... it's a little... well.... it's just weird" he added, trying his best to explain his rationale and coming up more than a little short.

"Why can't you just have that changling copy of me you made marry... whatever his name is?" Austin questioned.

"His name is Hermeadan," Lysas interjected, with some hint of annoyance. His tone changed when Austin brought up the changeling, however.

Trying to speak diplomatically, Lysas continued. "As for the changeling, don't take this the wrong way, but... those tricks wouldn't work on a fairy. I mean, it's not an intelligence thing. Not really. But humans are just more susceptible to that sort of stuff. You don't have magic in your world. Here, it's everywhere."

"Which is why I don't understand why you don't want this. You could return home often to see your family and friends and the changeling would fill in while you're gone. Won't you at least meet him? We can fly to his palace and you can make your final decision after you speak with him."

Austin realized that Lysas was not going to give up on his cause so easily. In a way, it was admirable. Perhaps it was morbid curiosity getting the better of him, bu Austin knew full well that he wouldn't mind seeing more of this supposed fairy kingdom that he was somehow magically whisked away to. Who knew when he would have the opportunity to view this realm again. Even though he knew there was no way he would ever agree to stay in this realm and marry a fairy, Austin nodded his head 'yes' as he answered Lysas.

"Okay, that's fair enough" Austin replied with a half smile.

Just then, the human did a slight double take.

"Wait", he interjected, "did you say fly?"

Lysas could hardly speak as his mouth was too busy smiling. "Mmmm hmmm," he nodded eagerly as he fluttered his wings, shaking loose a dusting of sparkling fairy dust that wafted on the breeze toward Austin.

The fragrant, fruity scent of the dust was powerful but did not last long. As the glittering dust brushed against the human's body, he suddenly felt very, very light. It was if he was suddenly underwater; it now required some effort to keep his feet on the ground and it felt like a light breeze might be enough to send him flying.

The fairy took his hand without another word and they were off. Due to Lysas' magic, the human would feel more comfortable in the sky than he did on land. Before long, they were soaring over wide fields of pale grass, grass that reflected the dazzling lights in the sky above like a mirror.

In the distance, a bright white ribbon of light meandered through the plains. As they got closer, it revealed itself as a glowing river. Strange creatures like jellyfish swam beneath its crystalline waves and fish-like animals rocketed up from the waves, some of them even flying off into the sky.

Further afield were herds of gigantic, elephantine beasts with four sets of imposing tusks. When they rose their trunks in the air and bellowed, the sounds they made together were as beautiful as an opera.

From this distance, Austin could perceive that three moons hung in the sky, adding their light to the ever-present aurorae that seemed to wind their way around them.

It was toward one of the aurorae that Lysas took them. A dazzling current of cerulean grew closer and closer as the fairy picked up speed. Higher and higher and higher the pair rose until they made contact with the current of ethereal light.

Swift and sure, the light embraced them in its flow, guiding the pair toward their destination. Reality seemed to warp around them as they eventually emerged in a completely different area. The landscape around them was similar but high mountains now rose in the distance.

"Nearly there," Lysas revealed. "What do you think so far?" he asked hopefully.

As a spritz of mist was suddenly flowing in his direction, Austin winced reflexively as one would if they were met with an unexpected spray of perfume. Indeed, the mist seemed to have a potent scent of its own. Austin began to feel a strange sensation overcoming his body. He felt like he was very close to falling flat on his face as he stumbled over his own feet. He then realized that his feet were lifting off the ground uncontrollably.

"What... what did you do?" Austin asked.

His only answer was Lysas' hand grabbing his own and, without a word of warning, he was pulled onwards and upwards into the air. Austin was already flabbergasted, but the journey over the fairy realm was leaving him nothing short of dumbfounded as well.

"I must be dreaming" was all he could muster as the duo arrived in a different part of the strange world, "I... I can't believe it".

Lysas just smiled in response as the strange duo easily flew over the mountain range. Sparkling lanterns shimmered below in the valley between the high, stone hills. Though they were too far above to make out much detail, the hints of elaborate stone structures could be glimpsed carved into the stone and fairies could be seen fluttering to and fro.

As they crossed the rocky threshold, it became clear that the mountains themselves formed a natural and circular wall. They surrounded a large flat plain. In its center was a great lake, its sleek surface as still and reflective as glass. And its heart was hole, perhaps a mile wide, and into it like a waterfall, fell the waters of the lake, seemingly inexhaustible.

Lysas led them down this opening and let darkness envelop them. It did not last long, as soon the pair rose head first into a strange cavern. Austin was quite sure they had not turned themselves around after diving head first down the hole, so how they rose rightside-up was a complete mystery to the human.

They now appeared to be in a small cave-like area. Blue gemstones and veins of crystal covered the walls and ceiling and emitted enough light that it fell like broad daylight. Some of the larger crystals hovered of their own accord and here, as everywhere in this strange land, were the dancing orbs of sparkling light.

Lysas let go of Austin and the boy once again found himself standing heavily and comfortably on solid ground. The fairy flew up, glanced about for a moment and grabbed a nearby crystal, no larger than a book. He carried it over to an outcropping of stone and nestled it in a snug crevice.

It glowed brilliantly for a moment before ejecting itself and returning to its gravity-defying dance. But the rocky wall to Austin's right suddenly shifted and began to dissolve until it formed a doorway. The cool breeze of the night air wafted into the cave and indeed, as Lysas led them out down a short, ascending, and narrow path, they emerged into the ledge of a cliff face.

A beam of pure light arced upward, connecting where they stood to the palace. The structure itself floating high above the plains below. Glittering crystal spires rose tall and proud, linked by artfully constructed bridges. Flags of various colors fluttered in the breeze, some of them miles long. All about the palace swam a rainbow aurora, reflecting off the prism-like towers to create an almost blinding but breathtaking display of light.

"It's just Hermeadan's personal residence, the Princely Palace. Not as grand as the High Palace of the King, but if you play your cards right, you'll get to love in both some day," Lysas promised with a hopeful smile.

Austin felt his jaw drop open as he viewed the dazzling palace in front of him. He had surely never seen anything like this on his own world and he was now positive that this was, indeed, no dream.

"I know this has to be real" he said out loud, "my imagination could never dream this up". He listened as Lysas explained that this was the palace belonging to Hermeadan. He chuckled a little when the fairy mentioned that it was not as grand as the king's palace.

"Well this looks pretty damn grand to me" he pointed out, "I can't even begin to think what the king's place might look like". While the thought of getting to live in a place as lavish as this palace appeared to be was quite unfathomable to Austin, he had to admit to himself that the notion was all the more alluring now.

Lysas warned Austin about the bridge of light before they began their half mile trek across it. It felt like there was nothing beneath their feet as they walked, but it nevertheless held their weight.

Soon enough, they were standing before a high, crystal wall. As they approached, the edifice shimmered and opened into a gateway into the heart of the palace.

The meandering pathway of high-ceilinged halls glowed with their own light. A pleasant blue luminescence made Lysas skin look all the more striking as he led the human through the maze-like structure.

Soon, they reached what had to be the throne room. It was massive and the ceiling could not be glimpsed, instead vanishing into a dazzling sea of glittering light. Candles with blue flames hovered all about them and at the far end, atop a large stairwell, sat Hermeadan on his throne.

The prince was similarly dressed as Lysas, though his toga was golden and patterned with intricate patterns and details. His longer, shoulder-length hair was wavy and a simple, silver circlet served as a crown and rested on his brow.

"Lysas?!" the prince said in surprise. "What are you doing here?" By then, however, he caught sight of Austin and temporarily sat in stunned silence.

Hermeadan looked back and forth between the two before a wide smile crept across his handsome face. "You brought him here?" He let loose a loud and warm laugh. "Incredible!"

"Welcome to my palace, Austin. It's so nice to meet you in person," he said by way of greeting, standing to show that he stood a couple inches taller than the other fairy.

By now, Lysas had dropped to his knees and fluttered his wings in respect and gestured for Austin to do the same.

Austin's eyes were opened wide as they took in more and more unforgettable and hardly believable sights. His brain barely had time to process one incredible thing before it was bombarded with yet another. All the while, he walked along a path that was felt like it wasn't there. He almost had to remind himself that he was also flying a moment ago.

As they entered the beyond grandiose palace, Austin walked slowly behind Lysas, keeping close to his guide. After all, he didn't know what to expect beside the unexpected. They came to a stop in the room that housed Hermeadan's throne. Upon the throne sat the fairy prince, looking quite regal. He seemed both surprised and pleased to see the human, which made Austin feel both at ease and yet nervous.

"It's nice to meet... you... I..." the human trailed off as he looked down to see Lysas kneeling before the throne, "oh... sorry...".

Austin rectified his royal faux pas by quickly kneeling down besides Lysas. He looked back and forth between the two fairies, unsure of when he was supposed to return to standing.

Hermeadan quickly shook his head and waved the gesture away. "Oh, there's no need for that. You're my guest, not my subject. And Lysas, you're my brother. How many times do I have to ask you not to bow like a supplicant every time you see me?"

"Someone has to remember princely protocol," joked Lysas. "Plus, it keeps me from letting myself forget where I stand in the scheme of things," he added without any bitterness as he and Austin stood.

The prince flew down the lengthy stairs and came to rest a few feet in front of the pair. It was difficult to tell with his azure skin tone, but it looked almost like he was blushing. "It really is a pleasure to meet you, Austin," the fairy beamed.

"This calls for a celebration. My betrothed will be arriving soon. We were going to hold a celebratory feast to welcome him and his entourage. I don't see why we can't make it a party for you too."

"Brother," Lysas interjected, "I'm sure Austin would like to rest up first."

"Of course," agreed Hermeadan. "Austin, feel free to make use of our guest quarters. I hope you will find them to your liking. Lysas and I need to prepare ourselves for Telemrion's arrival. But my retainers can lead you to your room and help you with anything you need. Telemrion is set to arrive in the next few hours. I will send Lysas to fetch you when it's time."

"Armun, Ermin, Orman," shouted Hermeadan, "take our human guest to his suite see to his every need."

Three of the blue candles hovering above twirled and sank to the ground, where they transformed into three identical fairies. Each wore a simple, white toga that exposed their muscled arms, but covered both shoulders unlike those of the royal fey folk. Simple leather cords were wrapped snug about their waists. He took a step toward the human, gave him a slight bow and flashed his most charming smile. The fairy had watched human culture enough to know their niceties. He extended his hand to shake Austin's own, gripping it firmly but warmly before leading Lysas away to prepare for the feasts.

Lysas followed his half-brother and waved at the boy as the pair quickly left the room.

"I'm Armun," said the fairy servant who had initially spoke to Austin. "These are my twin brothers Ermin and Orman," he continued, gesturing to his right and left respectively, though they were completely identical so trying to keep track of them was a fool's errand without magical memories.

"Please follow us to your private lounge," smirked Orman as the trio led the human through another round of maze-like hallways. Soon, they entered a brightly-lit chamber. A bubbling, steaming, and flowery smelling pool beckoned from one corner of the diamond shaped chamber. Directly across from it was a large, plush bed large enough to accommodate a dozen bodies.

Directly ahead of them was a large dining table lined with large, comfortable chairs and crowded with plates full of tempting and juicy fruit. Some were familiar to the human. Others were remarkably foreign and alien to the boy.

One was golden and seemed to glow much like its color's namesake. Another was a cloudy blue that occasionally sparked as if the glass contained a roiling thunderstorm cloud. The final beaker held a clear liquid that was laced with rainbows as it caught the light at differing angles.

"Your wish is our command, my Lord Austin," Armun said reverently.

"And there is no more important task for us than catering to your every whim, every desire," Orman added huskily.

"You are the honored guest of our master, Prince Hermeadan. Until told otherwise, we live to be at your beck and call, to grant you any pleasure you may wish," finished Ermin.
