#2 of Hunter and Prey

What dreams may become

Blood. That's all that Dante could see... Could feel... He was surrounded by it. It was in his muzzle, his lungs, his eyes... Everywhere. No matter how hard he fought he couldn't escape it. He tried to scream, but all that would come out was more blood. Then he heard it. Screaming... Loud screaming. It was close, not more then a foot from him it seamed, and it was getting louder.

When his eyes opened, he could still hear the screaming. It took him a few moments to realize that it was him screaming, and that he was in a strange room. The memories from the previous brought a few more screams from him before he finally awoke enough to realize that he was safe. He hugged his legs to his chest and looked around, trying to recall just where he was.

"I was worried... The last time I heard someone scream like that they were getting pulled apart by a tiger." Dante looked over to where the voice came from, one of his paws instinctively went under his pillow to grab for a gun that he was used to stashing under his pillow. "You told me that it would be a bad idea for you to have it tonight..." The figure in the doorway was back lighted by the room behind him, making his face impossible to make out as he spoke. "I guess I know why now." Dante growled when he noticed that the figure was holding a paw out, presumably holding his gun. The figure stepped forward into the room, the light behind him finally easing enough that Dante could make out his face.

"Karmin you asshole..." Dante sighed when he recognized the bear walking towards him. "Why didn't you just tell me it was you?" The bear gave him a toothy grin, then sat down on the bed next to Dante and handed him the gun.

"Come on now... Where would the fun be in that?" Dante glared at him, then gave him a smirk.

"You're gonna get yourself killed with that stupid sense of humor..." Dante mock growled with a soft punch to the shoulder. The bruin returned it with slightly more force, unintended but unavoidable due to his strength. Karmin gave him a weak smile, then sighed and looked away.

"I heard what you did last night... There was a report on the news that a gas explosion took out your house and they found the body of the guy you shot." Karmin gave another deep sigh before continuing. "They also found your brother... They think you went psycho and started killing people. They're looking for you and I doubt that they'll believe any explanation that you have." Dante looked at him until the bruin met his gaze.

"You haven't asked for an explanation yet Karmin... Do you think I went nuts?" Dante chuckled and gave him a slap on the shoulder, nearly knocking him off the bed.

"Come on buddy... You been nuts since the day I met you and before..." Both Karmin and Dante chuckled at the joke, but quickly got serious again. "When you're ready to tell me what happened, you will. I'm not about to push for answers when you have that..." Karmin assured with a nod to Dante's paws. Dante gave him a smirk, but nodded before Karmin left.

A few minutes latter, Dante finally pulled himself out of bed and walked to the adjoining bathroom. He took a few minutes to look at himself in the mirror, replaying the last few conscious hours in his head. Everything from the time he left the house for his assignment to driving away from his brothers body. With a deep sigh, he walked out to the from porch where Karmin was sitting.

"Come to watch the day go by?" Karmin asked when Dante sat down. They shared an uneasy stair for a few moments before Dante finally spoke.

"The info you gave me last night was shit... I almost got caught by some guards." Karmin nodded, turning back to look out at the street again. "I want to know who he is so I can go and find out just where he got his info..."

"You mean to go and see if he had anything to do with your brother last night..." Dante shot Karmin a glare, then sighed and slumped back down into his chair.

"Yeah, I guess that's what I mean, but I still wanna know why he gave me that crappy info..." This time it was Karmin who sighed. He got up slowly, walking over to stand in front of Dante.

"I figured you would... If I give you his name and you find out that he did have something to do with all that crap last night can I trust you to just kill him and leave it at that?" Dante turned away, looking at anything but the bear. "Come on Dan... Will you drop it if he knows anything?"

"If he knows what happened I might... If nobody else was involved."

"We both know that this goes way beyond some piss ant informant Dante... Too far for you to fuck with and get away this time."

Dante stood, barely reaching the bruins chest but still intimidating the large bear. "I don't have anything left to worry about leaving behind Karmin. I might as well go out doing something that needs to be done..." Karmin shook his head, a paw going to rub his eyes and muzzle. "I want to know who found my and how and right now you're the only one that has any kind of a lead for me. Don't make me force it out of you papa bear..." Karmin grimaced at the nickname that Dante had given him a while ago, reminding him of his parental feelings that he had for the young fox.

"I don't know why I'm doing this..." Karmin sighed as he handed Dante a slip of paper. "Just come back here after you see him, ok? And be alive when you do." They both smirked at the joke as Dante shoved the piece of paper into his pocket. Karmin ruffled Dante's head-fur before giving him a tight hug, much to Dante's annoyance.

"I'm not some five year old cub Karmin..." Dante growled in mock anger.

"I know, but you look like one and by god if you don't act like it..." A sharp poke to the ribs got Dante free, both giving each other a last look before Dante jumped off the porch and walked to his truck. Karmin couldn't help but feel a twinge of fear for the young fox, knowing that the chances of him returning after getting his information was minimal at best. He watched as Dante tore out of his driveway and accelerated off towards his next victim.

Dante had to control himself to figure out the address that Karmin had given him. The bear's paw writing was bad enough but the anxiety that Dante was feeling didn't help. A few wrong turns and re-tracing of roads later, he finally found his target. The building was a run down apartment complex plastered with adds and condemnation notices. Dante parked a few blocks away and walked to the building, doing his best to look inconspicuous but still catching a few passing glances from men obviously looking for a good time.

"Sorry guys... I don't do that anymore." Dante whispered to himself as he headed into the building. He quickly bounded up the steps to the third floor, finding the apartment he wanted fairly easily. He shoved his gun into the small of his back and ran his paws through the dark brown, mid back length hair that had caused him more then his fair share of grief from furs thinking he was a girl. He put on his best innocent face and knocked, seeing as there was no door bell. Dante strained his hearing to listen for paw steps, grinning to himself when he heard movement from within. The door opened quickly, a very overweight horse pulling it aside to see who it was bothering him. Dante flashed his best friendly smile, but the horse still backed away in shock. Dante knew instantly that the fur recognized him. In less time then the horse could react Dante had pulled his gun and rushed into the apartment, slamming the door behind him with a foot paw.

"One yell and I'll feed you a bullet..." Dante growled out quietly as he looked around the sparsely furnished living area for any other furs. The horse gulped loudly, looking around the room himself for help or a way to escape. Dante walked forward and pushed the gun against his chest over the equines heart. The taller fur was obviously scared out of his wits, but his mouth clamped shut anyway. Dante pushed him back until he fell into a chair, his eyes never leaving the barrel of the gun pointed at him.

"L-look kid..." Dante silenced the horse with a strong smack of the gun to his muzzle, knocking him both out and out of the chair. He hit the floor with an hard thump, making Dante wince in fear that someone would get curious about the noise. When he was sure that nobody was going to come he set to work. A few minutes latter, The horse was tied to the bed naked. Dante wasn't sure that he really needed to go as far as he was planning, or if it was even necessary for him to strip the overweight equine, but the intimidation factor always made conversations go quicker.

Dante grew impatient for the horse to wake up so he decided to collect various things to "persuade" the equine to talk. When he had a decent amount of toys he headed back to the bedroom, grinning when he discovered that the horse was finally coming around. Dante walked over to him, depositing his toys in a chair, before grasping the horses genitals tight enough to get a scream of pan that was muffled by the cloth that he had stuffed in the horses muzzle.

"Just wondering how loud you'd be..." Dante chuckled as he pulled it from the horses mouth. The fat fur was obviously frightened, his eyes nearly watering. Dante walked over to the chair and picked up the first of his toys from the chair, a cordless drill with a large drill bit in it. "This is going to be very painful for you, but you get to decide how much. Now I'm going to take this bid and make a hole in your left foot paw. Then I'm going to ask you some questions. If I don't hear what I want, I'm going to move to the other and so on until I get what I want understand?" The horse nodded nervously, his eyes on the tip of the drill bit.

"Look... You don't have to..." Dante walked over to the end of the bed and pushed the drill bit against the bottom of the horses foot paw as he begged. "P-please... You don't have to do this! I'll tell you whatever you want to know just don..." Dante pressed his ears back to block out the horses scream as best he could while the drill made a neat little hole right into the bone. When he had bottomed out the drill, Dante made sure to wiggle it a bit on the withdrawal to cause even more pain. He held the drill up, then let the weight of it droop it down onto the horses now useless foot paw.

"Now let's start shall we? I want to know just where you got the information that you gave the bear about the factory last night..." The horse just lay there and whimpered for a few moments, so Dante pressed the drill against his other foot paw.

"WAIT! PLEASE! The guys that gave me the info said that they'd kill me if I didn't do what they wanted. They said that nobody would get hurt cause you wouldn't be able to find the target..." Dante watched the horses face, looking for any signs of a lie. When he didn't see any, he pulled the drill back a few inches, then stopped and pushed it back. "W-what are you doing? I'm telling you the truth I swear!"

"I know you are..." Dante sighed before drilling another hole into the horse, this time doing it as slowly as he could. After the screams died down, he continued. "Now for my next question... How did they find you to give you the information, and who were they?" The horse was obviously less willing to give that information, so Dante moved the drill up to his knee.

"I don't know who they were... Only that they found me when I said I wanted the info!" Dante gave a big smirk, visibly scarring the horse. "I told you what you wanted to know, now please let me go. I swear I won't tell anyone you were here!" He screamed again when the drill tore through his flesh, blood and cartilage and bone flying everywhere from the now dulling drill bit.

He whimpered long after the bit was pulled out of his now ruined knee, blubbering like what could only be described as a wounded baby. "Now I did that because you gave the bear false information..." Dante watched the horses eyes follow the drill bit to his other knee. "...And this one is for sending me on a wild goose chase." He had to push harder this time to get the drill bit through the horses knee, the screams from the equine their loudest yet. He blubbered and cried like a child when all was said and done, knowing that he would most likely never walk again.

"W-why... Why are you doing this?" The horse whimpered, his head falling back against the bed from weariness. The memory of his brother's body flashed through Dante's head, making him cringe for a moment, then get angry. He shoved the drill bit against the base of the horses sheath and slowly pulled the trigger, the variable speed motor in the drill making it turn agonizingly slow as it dug into the horses skin.

"For pissing me off..." He finally growled as he squeezed the trigger all the way down, his eyes burning with hatred as blood and flesh were torn and flung.

By the time that The horse had died, Dante had compleatly dulled the drill bit and moved on to some of the more interesting toys on the chair. A knife to filet a few pieces of flesh, a screwdriver to puncture various organs. General things that would get the attention of the corner that would eventually get to pick over the body.

Dante gathered up his gun and searched the house for any little tidbits of information that he could find. The only things that came up were a few hundred dollars of stashed cash and a piece of shit twenty-two handgun that looked like it wouldn't even fire. There was no point in staying there after that so he made his exit, quickly getting out of the building and back to his truck before anyone else could give him a good look. It wasn't easy to hide the blood on his cloths and fur, but somehow he managed to make it out of there without having any trouble, something that he was greatful for.

The police found the body a few days latter, long after Dante had returned to Karmin's house and cleaned away all the evidence of the torture. He didn't even see it as a murder because of the hell he had went through recently. He and Karmin pondered what their next move would be, knowing that because Dante was still alive, it wasn't over.

"If they found me once, they'll find me again..." He would remind the bear any time that he would feel himself loosing commitment

"Right you are kit..." Karmin would answer back, knowing that Dante hadn't stopped having the nightmare from the night he killed Virgle. On more then one occasion he would have to wake Dante from it when the kit would stop breathing, the night terrors as they were called taking a heavy toll on both.

Dante would always apologize when Karmin would have to wake him, but the bear would always shrug it off as nothing, hoping that the sooner they dealt with the problem the sooner they would be rid of the nightmares.

"Only cause I can't stand to watch you like this..." Karmin would remind himself and try to reason letting the kid play the dangerous cat and mouse game that they were. "Only cause I care..."
