#6 of The Chronicles of James Travant

Tanya was at the door, her knife and pistol clenched tightly in her hands, as the door opened almost brought the knife down when she caught the sight of who it was and both weapons immediately dropped from her hands as she caught him and let him lean against her.

"Oh my god, Travis... Just lay down..." She forced him to lie on her floor propped up in a half sitting position against the wall. She locked and barricaded the door, then disappeared into her bathroom, bringing out gauze, rubbing alcohol, clean washcloths, tweezers and some papertape.

Her face was one of worry and distress, "You should have waited for backup, you... you could have been killed, you stubborn fool!"

She was on the verge of tears as she held a piece of cloth to his collarbone with her knee to stop the bleeding as she looked at his stomach wound. She made sure no fragments were lodged in the wound before starting to patch up his stomach and lacing gauze over the wound, using papertape to secure it in place as it healed and stopped its bleeding.

Next she attended the wound of his collarbone, a seething noise erupted from her lips as she saw the severity of it, "I'll be right back..."

She disappeared into her room and came back out with a needle and medical thread. She knew that if she couldn't get this fixed his life would be in serious jeopardy. Making a detour into the kitchen, she came back to him with a bottle of whiskey. She kissed his cheek and whispered into his ear softly, "This will hurt I'm afraid. Drink some of this..." She tilted his head forward so he wouldn't choke and gave him a good gulp of the whiskey.

She took her needle and the sewing thread and took her lighter out, heated the tip of it so it would hurt less and penetrate the skin with less force and began to stitch the wound on his collarbone as best as she could.

She was no doctor, but be damned if she was going to let the best thing to happen to her leave her so suddenly...

She sewed the wound, knotted it off, and bit the thread end off from the needle, looking to him, his eyes were drooping, "No you don't... don't make me smack you, stay awake... look at me... you can't leave me... I ain't letting you go, do you hear me?!"

She ripped her shirt, she was all out of clean cloth to use, they were full of blood... she used the ripped piece and tied it around his arm. She took care of his other scrapes and cuts with the rubbing alcohol, she had dabbed it onto his collarbone before loosely placing a piece of gauze over it.

That done, Tanya picked him up in her arms, which was no easy task, but she found the strength to carry him to her bed and gently tuck him into it. She looked at him for a while, about an hour passed, she had to keep him up until that point... he was doing slightly better when she finally let him sleep.

"Rest, I'll check on you throughout the night... make it through, we'll get to the hospital at first light." She yawned and pulled a light blanket from her cabinet, went to the living room to sleep.

She tossed and turned for the better part of the night before she couldn't take it any longer. She got up, tip-toed into her room, closed the door and slipped into the bed beside him. Cuddling up close to him, the side that wasn't with the injured arm and collarbone, she laid her head on his shoulder and draped her arm over his chest, well clear of his stomach wound.

The next morning, Travis woke with the sunlight in is eyes. He blinked curiously at the window and the sunrise beyond it, before shifting a bit and turning his head.

His wounds still hurt, but significantly less, although his right side felt heavy....

Oh... He turned his eyes away from the dazzling sunlight to see Tanya curled up against him beneath the covers, his arm wrapped around her shoulders protectively in his sleep. That's why...

Travis blushed for the first time in a long time, coughing gently but loud enough to wake her.

Tanya woke groggily. "Oh, I'm sorry... I couldn't sleep last night out there so, I uh..." She blushed and looked away from his eyes. Those eyes... so luring... so deep... and wait a second... he... he was blushing. Could... that mean he kind of liked it?

She tried her hand at slinking from his hold over her shoulders. "I'm sorry if I had made you uncomfortable... it was cold last night, and I guess I got closer to you than I realized for warmth. Forgive me?" She looked into his eyes and smiled rather like a kid trying to get out of trouble, adorable despite her age now.

Travis smiled, wrapped his arm around her shoulders again and pulled her into a hug.

"Thanks for what you did...sorry to have worried you." He spoke softly, squeezing her shoulders for a moment.

Tanya hugged him back, and sighed happily. "I'm glad you are feeling better. I was so worried, you took all that risk for me, and I'm honored. You should have waited for backup, then you might not have been so hurt..."

She kissed his cheek, "But I'm glad you are safe, and that I knew what to do... that gash in your collarbone was pretty serious. How does it feel to finally meet and defeat one of those things?"

Travis laughed and turned his head away when the laugh turned into a cough.

"Painful." He finally replied, shifting somewhat "But I'm feeling better, 'wielders have a hell of a gut-check."

He paused for a moment and then turned to kiss her forehead. "I should probably get to medical, but they won't be able to do much more to me, I do need to get ahold of dispatch somehow and tell them I'm off my feet."

Tanya nodded and smiled, her eyes briefly closing as he kissed her forehead and reopened as soon as his lips no longer touched her skin. "Aye, they might be able to do something I ain't equipped to do here, I don't know. But you do have to report in... I'm sorry, it's my fault you'll have to miss work..."

She scooted out of bed to reveal she had a silken gown on that hid almost everything well besides the roundness of her chest. She threw a light blue housecoat on her, and shook her head, her hair falling lightly into place except for a few strands here and there. "Call me later?"

Travis shifted onto his elbows sitting up slightly, then pushed his feet out of the bed and onto the floor.

He had just climbed to his own two feet when a wave of nausea overcame him, sending him stumbling to the floor again. He caught himself, barely, and sat back onto the bed abruptly.

"Damn...." He hissed.

Tanya walked to his side and stood there. "You should rest if you aren't feeling up to walking or standing just yet. Are you hungry, perhaps?" She ran her fingers gently through his hair; it soothed her as much as it probably felt calming and sensual to him.

"I could whip something up, what would you like to eat; the medical food probably isn't as good as it should be I'm gathering."

"I don't want to burden you...." He began, before something in his pocket beeped.

Travis sighed. "Forgot about that." He reached into the pocket and pulled out a small phone with the EUPD emblem emblazoned on the back, a press of a button flipped it open and he pressed it to his ear. "Officer Savant."

He listened for a moment, then pulled the phone from his ear and pressed a button, the loudspeaker switching on as the voice continued talking.

"-is unacceptable for you to be late for your shift like this Savvy, you know that."

"I'm afraid I'm off my feet for a bit, Aces." Travis replied. "Had a run in with a 'wielder."

There was a pause. "You mean the one they found dead in the Aegis district?"

"My fault. I meant to call in, but it knocked me for a loop, I wasn't wearing armor." Travis sighed.

"Dumbass." Came the reply, there was a pause and some speaking in the background, then: "The desk Sarn't says take the standard week of injury leave, we'll see you next Thursday."

"Savant out." Travis affirmed, closing the phone.

"If it means no difference to you, I guess I will take you up on that breakfast, whatever you want to cook." He kept his eyes on the wall, knowing that if he turned to her he'd likely be looking in places he shouldn't.

Tanya smiled, "Nice buddies you got there." She laughed, "I'll cook up some eggs for the both of us, and some bacon while I'm at it. I'll be back soon, don't go hurting yourself more..."

She whirled around and as she walked her housecoat billowed like a cape in the breeze she left the door open and she started to lightly hum as she turned on the stove top in the kitchen, buttered the pan and began to cook the eggs, on a different pan she put an inch of water into it and started to cook the frozen bacon.

She slightly swayed from side to side with her hips as she cooked, a song being sung in her head. She hadn't been this happy in a long while, nor had she cooked breakfast for anyone. She normally woke up alone, she finished cooking and put the bacon and eggs on two plates, his with more bacon and one more egg than her because he needed his strength.

She returned to the bedroom and sat down next to him on the bed. "Here... I hope you like it." She smiled and began to eat her own as he took his plate and fork.

"Thanks." Travis replied, sparing a glance at her and blushing a bit as he began to eat, although he consciously slowed himself down, he still finished his plate in record time.

"Good stuff." He said, wiping his mouth and setting the plate down.

She finished her food not much longer than it took him to eat his. "Thanks, it's been a rather long time since I've cooked anyone any meals. I'm glad you enjoyed it."

She looked over to him and laid back onto the bed with a light bounce, "So you still planning to head to medical, or are you going back home or staying here..."

Travis blushed again. "I uh, rather like it here, to be honest, Medical will just poke and prod me for no reason, and if I were at home I couldn't do much..."

He looked away. "But I know I'm imposing on you, as soon as I can, I'll go..."

Tanya smiled and lazily brushed her fingertips along his bicep down across his forearm, "You are welcome here anytime Travis. What did you want to do? You could sit on the balcony, get some fresh air with all those flowers around you, you could rest on my bed or in the living room, as you can see I have cable in both rooms. And feel free to use my shower and stuff, I don't mind at all. If you need anything, or any help I'll be around. I'm going to give water to the flowers."

She sat then stood up and headed out of the room, filling the watering jug and starting to give the flowers water to drink, all the while humming a soft and melodious tune.

Travis managed to sit up again and sighed, he was about to attempt to stand again when his phone chirped its "private" ringtone.

Travis picked it up and flipped it open, pressing it to his ear. "Yeah."

"Savvy, it's Raynes."

"What's up Aces?" Travis leaned back against the headboard, idly fingering the bandage on his stomach.

"Just calling to make sure you're alright man."

"Yeah man, I'm alright. Got someone takin' care of me." He glanced up, but Sonya wasn't anywhere he could see.

"You're not at home?"

"No, I was to injured to go anywhere after the fight, hell, I still am, I think."

"Woah, tell me it's that girl you were talking about the other day."

Travis laughed. "Yeah, it's Tanya, just so happened to be near her house when it happened."

"Guess you're a lucky man."

"No lie." Travis smiled. "She's a real angel."

He realized he had probably spoken too loud and lowered his voice. "I'm gonna catch some rest man."

"Alright, take care."

He clicked the phone shut and dropped it, pondering his own strength to get out of her bed. It made him feel awkward to just stay here in a bed not his own, and he damn sure wasn't going to use her shower.

"Don't even know what she thinks of me..." He sighed to himself, kicking his feet over the side of the bed again...
