Prologue

Dragons have lived on earth since many, many millennia. Long time the placid creatures were let in peace. But in the early Middle Ages, humans started to hunt the large mystic beings because they feared them. After years of war, they disappeared and retreated in unpopulated regions for many years and hid from most humans.

This time ended when a powerful association of humans around them, was founded. They called themselves magicians and wanted to protect and help the dragons to get their old strength.

The dragons accepted their help and decided to let humans raise many of their eggs since in meantime there were very few of them.

Dragons had the ability to bequeath their knowledge and even languages to their hatchlings in the eggs. So dragons mature incomparable fast both spiritually and physically.

Humans who got the job to raise a dragon were called dragon keepers.

But not everyone could become a keeper. Both humans, just like dragons don't know exactly how it works, but every dragon egg seems to be connected only with a single person.

The egg chooses this person itself and gives signs when that person gets in near.

A magician will know when a dragon has found its keeper. Unhatched dragons could wait for years for the right one.

When the time comes, the little dragon needs to be alone with its mother or the keeper they had chosen and if it is exposed to the special light of a full moon, it will hatch soon.

All dragons are connected in a spiritual way with each other. This bond allows them to communicate without audible voice over the distance of a few miles. They just need to concentrate on the shape of a known dragon to build up a personal line to communicate.

They have developed a language consisting of colors they transmit through their mind-link.

No human is able to understand this language but many dragons, even those who had grown up without a keeper have learned humans' languages too and bequeathed them to their progeny. But the mind-link is more then only for direct communication. Over far shorter distance they are able to read every deep thought of someone. There are tricks to prevent this by concentrating but most dragons don't do it against the will of someone.

Dragons who spent much time with a human noted that they got the ability to reach the human to with the mind-link. Soon it wasn't restricted for dragons only, anymore.

Human scientists have researched this and got behind how it works very probably:

The human brain emits, like that of every mammal and especially of dragons, very weak signals of electricity. Due to the evolution, dragons have mastered this effect. Besides, their mind is able to read the signals of other persons easily. The human's ability is too weak to recognize the signals from another human but not from a dragon. Though they need often some practice. In addition, dragons are far more sensitive to those signals, so the communication works in both directions though over a far smaller distance.

This is called a bond between a human and a dragon. It can get very strong when it gets enough time and connects the partners for their whole life.

Like between dragons, the bond can reach far deeper then only simple communication. Feelings and even thoughts can be shared through this mind-link. Intentionally as well as unintentionally.

It is up to their decision whether they remain together even when the dragon has grown enough to survive without a firm partner.

Unlike humans, dragons get to this point only after a few months till 2 years. Since they get most oft their energy alone from the sun, they need to hunt or eat very rarely and not much else to survive.

There are 6 main breeds of dragons. Every one has something special. Besides, there are large differences in size.

The smallest one is very special because they were the single ones which are able to walk on two legs comfortable though they prefer to walk on all fours. Besides they are completely covered in a bright pink fur. But with the size of an average man, they aren't able to carry a human very well.

The second kind are a blue, slightly larger breed. They are completely covered with scales and very fast flyers.

The third is completely white but haves scales on their back as well as fur on their belly.

They are the most common breed. Over a third of the population are white dragons. Staying relaxed on all four they are around as tall like a human.

Members of the fourth breed are called water dragons. Their larger golden shimmering scales and wings make them good swimmers. Although the have always to come up to breathe from time to time, they spend often much time underwater.

All dragons are able to breathe fire but the fifth kind is called fire dragon because of their greater resistance against fire and their red scales. They are also a pretty large breed.

The last kind is often called a very scaring kind. With their black scales, enormous size and the horns on their head many peoples associates them with the monsters from old fairy tails but they are mostly as calm as other dragons.

In general, all kinds are able to mate with every other breed. Though, mostly they prefer their own kind. Nevertheless there are also mixed breeds.

Although even old dragons, which could get easily over a life span of 400 years, not to mention humans, don't remember exactly of the old war between their species, there are still conflicts today.

Maybe it's is the envy some humans feel for dragons, or it is the stupid fear the other party could attack. But most conflicts happened till today without severe damage.

Chapter 1

... - You don't really want to do that... -, he screamed, but it was too late. With a few strong beats of her dragon wings, they got higher into the warm summer air, three hundred feet over New York's skyscrapers. They rotated into a vertical position to flip back and rushed downwards to complete the looping. He felt the air hitting his face; stroking through his dark brown hair while he held himself tight on her scaly neck to not slip down from her back.

They had done it many times before. But every time was a new challenge for Jake as well as for his dragoness named Keyly. He tried to avoid being on her back when she was in mood to do stunts, but he also loved to play with her in the sky.

It was an incredible feeling especially when the people on the ground admired Keyly's flying show or yelled to them from time to time when they flew only a few feet above their heads...

Jake was a handsome, though not very athletic, guy with green-grey eyes and short hair.

He was a young man and he remembered well how he got the dragoness on whose back he was flying now...

Around almost two years ago, he had moved to a small city after he had completed his studies in economics.

Leaving his family and friends wasn't very easy for him, but he had never been a very dependant human and he had found a simple job where he could win enough money to live and to start a career.

One day, he met an old, bearded man. He owned a small, dilapidated house in Jake's street.

He wondered when he invited him to his house without many words. But although he was mysterious he decided to accept the invitation.

The house was full of odd objects and small figures and looked antiquated but very interesting too. The man called himself Orin and was friendly. He explained he would be a magician.

Jake was amazed, he hadn't met a member of the magicians before but he wondered what he could want from him. Later he told him that he had the oversight over a few dragon eggs. Afterwards he guided him into a cold room in the basement and told Jake to stay there while he leaved the chamber.

Jake looked around in the weak light of a small lamp and found a wood table in the middle of the room with a row of six slightly oval spheres almost of the same size. They were made of a smooth material and a little bigger then a hand and colored in different shades of blue, red and green. One was also clear white.

The latter one attracted Jake's attention the most. He hadn't ever seen a dragon egg in real but he recognized them immediately. He moved slowly towards the white egg.

The more he looked the more it seemed to attract him. It fascinated him in a way and felt suddenly something in his mind he hadn't before. A few seconds later, he touched the egg. For a second he felt how warm it was, then, out of sudden something flooded his mind rapidly. A swirl of colors ran through his mind and clouded all his senses. He lost almost his balance because of the intensity.

It came clearly from that egg. A moment later, the colors changed to a pure white and when he opened his eyes, his normal vision came back.

Jake remembered what he had heard. Dragons were communicating by telepathy in their own language out of colors. So he recognized the dragon in the egg had sent him those signals of colors.

That was the day he got responsible for the young dragon in the egg.

The room had been only a test how he would react to a dragon egg and he had passed it.

Orin came back told him many things about dragons he didn't knew before and what he would have to do as a dragon keeper.

Jake was very curious but also worried. He didn't know whether he could take care of such a precious and maybe vulnerable and tender creature.

Orin calmed him and told him that when a dragon chooses a human to grow up and live with, they are very sure he or she will take care of it.

Jake looked thoughtful at the egg. The odd but in a way pleasing feeling was back. He could feel the egg. It was radiating a warm energy which flooded his body.

A few weeks later Jake went with the warm egg into the small backyard. It was full moon, so he settled the egg into the short grass and rested himself in a little chair. He forced himself to remain awake. He couldn't tell how much time had passed but suddenly he heard a few little noises in the quiet night. He noted the egg had started to radiate again and a few seconds later there was a small crack in its shell. Jake crouched next to the shimmering white egg and watched it carefully.

A few minutes later the crack had grown to a small hole. Jake didn't know whether to help splitting the shell but when the egg cracked again he thought the little creature wouldn't have any problems.

It didn't take long and he saw three and then four very little talons grabbing the border of the small hole. They were of a hard, dark grey material and ended in small smooth fingers.

The creature took its other hand to the hole and tried to rip it apart.

Jake put his own hands on the egg trying to help carefully. A moment later, the shell cracked again and split in two almost identical halves. Jake startled because of the sudden motion but then he saw the dragon who was liberated from the egg now. He was astonished from the brilliant white, little creature which moved slowly. He appreciated its whole length to around a little over a foot of which the tail took around a third. It was slightly wet from a thick, clear liquid. So it looked very cute sitting in a half of the shell.

It raised its small almost triangular, elongated head around, stretching its long snout into the warm night air.

The dragon opened its maw and exposed a row of small white teeth. Jake could also see its red tongue when it seemed to yawn.

The skin of its upper half was smooth and a pattern of small scales were visible.

The most was white but some symmetric scales in the middle of its back and its neck were of a bright golden tone.

Like most dragons, it hadn't any horns. But instead a row of several transparent and flexible fins of skin starting from its neck and ending in the middle of its long tail. The row had a height of about an inch.

The bottom part of the body was covered with a short fur. It reached from the base of the head and covered also its belly as far as Jake could see. However, its wings were scaly and a little transparent while they were folded against her body. Its bright green, fascinating eyes matched its appearance very well. All in all it was the sweetest creature he had ever seen.

The chest moved slowly up and down with every breath and its wings were curled around its body but they were slightly transparent too and allowed Jake to see its hind legs which had three talons.

The young dragon tried to stand up slowly. Jake was still unable to move but then he spoke quietly:

• H... Hello, little one. -

The dragon looked into his eyes and managed to stand stable on its feet.

Jake felt how it sent again its signals and he didn't know how to react. He just formed the word "Welcome!" in his mind but he wasn't sure whether the dragon had understood but it raised its wings and stretched them out. Jake felt a warm feeling of happiness in himself. He thought it would be just the gladness that his fosterling was healthy and happy but the feeling seemed to come from that little being in front of him. He felt that all the things he had heard about the special bond of a dragon with a human were true.

It spread its wings as far as it could and Jake could feel a touch of pride from the little dragon.

Suddenly his mind got flooded by the swirl of colors again, this time far stronger than before. He tried too speak quietly:

• Sorry, I... I can't understand you. -

The magician had given him some instruction what to do when the dragon would not speak already a human language. He tried to send him images. At first just a picture of themselves lying in the grass. He wanted to show that he wouldn't be a danger. But suddenly he thought he had heard a quiet bright murmuring. He wasn't sure where it had come from.

Than he heard a little unsure but clear enough the word "Hello". He recognized that it came from that little dragon although it hadn't opened its mouth. He was amazed; it seemed to speak the human language even though it had hatched only a few minutes ago.

• Wow, you... you can speak? -

• Yes... I think... I'm trying to, my keeper. -

The words sounded shyly but much clearer now. The creature seemed to speak English very well. In addition, the voice sounded pretty bright and female. Jake assumed so it was a girl.

It was so oddly to hear those words: A little hatchling, calling him its keeper. But nevertheless, it touched him.

The creature smiled brightly, fixing his eyes when he looked in her face.

Now he recognized her pretty slim body too. She didn't look weak for her size but was very smooth.

Jake had heard that some dragons had gotten from their mothers a human name too, so he wouldn't have to name her. He decided to ask.

• You can call me Jake, little dragoness. Do you have a name? -

• I think you wouldn't be able to learn my dragon name. You need to give me one in your language! -

He had thought about a name for her since he got the egg. For a female dragon he had chosen the name "Keyly". It was a name which came into his mind just while sleeping and he liked it very much. So he thought it would go well with a dragoness of her kind.

Before he could answer, he noted a small shiver of her body and recognized that her scales were still slightly wet because of the clear liquid.

Till now he had been too shy to come too close to her since he didn't want to make the fault and treat her like a pet or an animal. But she was obviously cold and he needed to do something. He hadn't thought to bring something to cover her so he moved closer to her and touched at first her head tenderly with his hand. It was almost dry in the meantime and very soft but he could feel the smooth structure of her scales. She purred quietly when he slid over the first fin on her back, pressing it on her neck.

• Are you alright? I'll bring you inside where it's warmer. -

• I am. Don't worry. - She sounded slightly tired and Jake decided just to carry her filigree body.

She smiled a heart melting smile to him when he pressed her against his chest to pick her up.

It felt immediately warmer for her being close against him like this. He supported her head with his hand while standing up and she curled up in his arm.

In the house he sat her onto his bed and turned on the heater to make as warm as possible for the little dragon. Afterwards he lay next to her.

Only a few seconds later she had fallen asleep still covered in his embrace. Her chest rose up and down continuous, making a silent, purring sound and she had dried too so he decided to remain just next to her like this for the rest of the night...

Though she was that young, she was spiritually almost a full dragoness.

She knew a lot about their species and told him the next time everything and he tried to teach her everything about humans. He found out that she was the child of a white dragon and a half water dragon. So she was to third quarters a white dragon but a quarter came from a golden water dragoness.

The time passed and she grew fast. Because of the fact that she got all her energy from the sun by absorbing the light through her scales, it was easy for Jake to feed her. In addition she loved much of the human food and didn't mind not to go to hunt like pure wild dragons.

They got very good friends.

Only a few months later he got the chance to advance in his job and found a far better workplace in the large metropolis New York City.

A large dragon nest with a few hundreds dragons was on the outskirts of the city too. They had found an old unused building and arranged it like a natural dragon den. Keyly was very eager to move there since in the small city she hadn't met many other dragons.

Jake found a payable but reasonable penthouse on a skyscraper near the dragon nest.

Keyly was soon strong enough to carry him without much effort on her back. She helped him a lot to come through the traffic in the city from now on. He could never thank her enough for that. Jake arranged the apartment dragon-appropriate with larger doors and a nest since she was far too large now to sleep comfortable next to him like she did when she hatched.

They had arranged even a large rain shower to allow her showering in clean water...

Around a year passed like this without any incidents and she got a strong, almost full sized dragoness. Jake was very proud of her...

... Keyly's back scales shimmered in the sun, while they were cutting through the air.

The fresh wind rushed around their bodies. Jake wore only a T-shirt with short pants and sandals but he didn't get cold on Keyly's warm back.

• Please warn me next time, Keyly... -, he asked with a joking admonishing tone.

Her answer was a giggle; - I know you liked it...-

It was the very early Friday evening and Jake wanted to relax on a fly after he had a long work week. But he knew already, it wouldn't be very relaxing.

So they flew a few seconds till they were above the large beach of New York.

Keyly's eye fell on the wide blue water. She giggled to herself again and closed her wings to sprint downwards towards the glistening, calm water.

• ...and I know you will like this too! -

Jake recognized again too late what she was about to do.

Before he could say anything they had reached the surface. Jake bent his body to lay flat on Keyly's scales to not get pushed from her back. He could barely get a deep breath before his dragoness straightened up for a second and they broke the surface still with a high speed. So his head got submerged too. He felt how the light got suddenly darker and how the clean water flew around his body. He managed to open his eyes a little. Just enough to see the blue water and the sun shimmering already a few feet over his head as well as some bubbles.

He tried to calm down since he knew his breath holding abilities weren't that good especially not excited but he spoke in her mind:

• What do you think you're doing? I'm totally wet now! -

Keyly glided smoothly through the water. Her wings were pushing her forward just like in the air. It was obvious that she was partially a water dragon.

She turned her head smiling at her rider. Unlike him she was able to keep her green eyes fully open even in the salt water.

• Are you alright? -

He smiled as an answer, so she didn't wait long and arched her body pushing herself off the water, thrusting into the depth. Jake was unsure what she wanted to do and he frightened just a little. He had been in a dive club when he was younger but it was years ago and he didn't remember to have been that good at it.

The light was even weaker now and the water got cold but the salt water burned in his eyes so he had to shut them.

Jake felt how Keyly sent him images instead. He let her overwhelm him and only seconds later he could see everything Keyly was seeing.

They had experienced this shared view a few times ago. But underwater it was just amazing.

He was seeing a few black cliffs under them as well as many small fish and some colourful corals stuck at the vertical rocks. He hadn't any clue that the sea around the city looked underwater like this.

Unfortunately his bodily urge took him soon away from his dreaming.

They had been over a minute underwater. Keyly felt his desire and headed to the surface. The water splashed around when they broke it. Jake tightened his grip around Keyly's smooth, wet neck again, but this time because of joy and not because of fear. When he caught his breath again, he spoke:

• That was amazing! Why haven't you told me about this earlier? -

She laughed and answered slightly sarcastic: - I thought you don't like this! -

• How could I? -, was his quiet, giggled answer.

Keyly glided only a few inches over the surface, disturbing the clear water with her talons.

Soon they decided to go to the beach. Just to relax in the sand and to get dry.

They landed carefully on a place at the beach where only a few people were walking around.

The sea gave a beautiful sight. So they spent around an hour there, playing also in the water.

Later they went at home. Now slightly recovered, Keyly couldn't resist to continue showing her stunts again by flying over the buildings and dodging close around.

Though it happened to be dangerous, Jake loved also to fly on Keyly's back in a way. He was sure that was something only a dragon keeper could experience.

At the beginning he had been very afraid to fall down but when they got used to, he learned that she would never allow that he would fall off.

After a time, Keyly got tired and because they had flown in circles they weren't near their apartment. So they decided to rest on the ground and walk on foot for a while.

When they landed, they didn't recognize exactly where they were. It wasn't a pretty district and Jake hadn't been there before but they thought nothing of it. The buildings were high and grey and the dirty street was surprisingly empty for a Friday. At least they knew the right direction, so they walked around. It had gotten dark in meantime.

When they turned into a side street, they heard a scream followed by oddly laughter.

Suddenly three men appeared from another alley only 300 feet in front of them. One black and two whites. They wore all black leather jackets and were around Jake's age but one had also a long knife in his hand. Jake recognized they were from a gangster clan and had probably attacked someone. He didn't want to have something to do with them and told Keyly just to go further avoiding them. He thought to turn back would provoke them and there wasn't enough room to lift into the air.

Keyly concentrated on one of the men. She knew she was able to hide her presence in the mind of a human if she needed to.

Keyly noted just too late who the man really where that they were in rage.

Especially in the big cities were many people who were against the dragons and their keepers.

The fact that they had been kept secret and all the rumors had caused heavy tensions. From time to time this resulted even in violence.

The men came closer, directly towards Jake and Keyly who stood next to each other.

Suddenly the one with the knife ran up to Keyly. He was only little smaller than her standing on all fours but bigger then Jake who was of an average build.

Keyly avoided him with a swift motion but he hadn't the intention to attack her yet.

Now they were partially surrounded and the other came closer too.

• What do you want from us? -, Jake asked loudly, trying to hide his fear. But Keyly had noted it and she knew also the answer.

She spoke rapidly in his mind:

• Don't fear. I can fight. -, she tried obviously to calm him down.

• Keyly, they have knifes and not sure what else... We can't fight! -

• I think we have no choice. -

The men laughed loudly. But responded spiteful:

• We will fend off every dragon who dares to come into our city. I recommend you not to try to stop us if you value your life! -

Jake didn't know what to do. But he knew he would defend Keyly at any price although he hadn't anything he could use. But Keyly reacted.

• You won't ever kill a dragon, human. We don't fear you! -

Jake couldn't believe what she was saying. He knew she was always more courageous then he was but to provoke the men was just stupid but she did not listen to him.

He noted the men were high in someway but not enough to be weakened to fight.

Jake was almost desperate now. They would kill them both. There was nobody on the street and, even if the officers could do anything, to call the police would have taken too long.

Suddenly the man with the sharp, bladelike knife rushed towards Keyly again.

Jake was petrified in that situation. He tried to search for anything he could use as a weapon but there wasn't anything.

Keyly saw her attacker and dodged him in the last second. When he was at her side, she took a swing with her tail and hit him in the stomach. The knife fell to the ground.

Jake couldn't believe it. He hadn't ever seen her fight and this guy had been even armed.

Jake reacted and hit the man who staggered in pain with his fist. Now the other man was even more in rage and was determined to win the fight. They draw two dentate knives from their jeans and rushed to the other one who had fallen onto the ground.

• Stay behind me! -, Keyly said hurried and stepped towards the man.

• I don't let you fight alone. -

He had never been the combative type but although Keyly was his best friend, he would have felt ashamed to her to let her alone in this danger.

At first he had thought such a fight would be bare suicide but now he realized that it seemed she was able to compete in a battle very good and she hadn't used her fire yet.

Jake followed her but couldn't do very much. Keyly was very vigorous and she had soon injured one of the attackers with her claws and the other had dodged only very close the flames of her fire. She hit also the arm of the black guy with her tail and he dropped his knife before he fell to the ground. Keyly looked back at Jake who was two steps behind her after all.

Slowly, the first attacker had recovered and stood up gripping his knife again. He rushed in pure rage with his knife towards Jake's back who couldn't see him.

• Watch out! -, she shouted at him and turned around in the same second to reach him.

Jake understood. He turned around in the last second and hit, how he had never thought it would be possible, the hand of the guy so that the knife fell down. Before he could react, he had hit also his chin with his other fist.

Keyly got distracted by what happened. It were only a few short seconds but enough for the third man to stand up and to run up to Keyly's side. Jake tried to warn her but when she turned around and lifted her paw to attack, it was too late. The man hit her chest multiple times with his knife, cutting the skin under her fur. The knife got red from Keyly's blood.

She yelled out in pain but suppressed it; she was in rage too. Before the man could reach back to sting again, she had hit his side with all her force.

She heard how a rib cracked before he slid a few feet on the ground. One of the guys helped him to come up. He arched in pain and stared hatefully at Keyly and Jake but without saying anything.

Seconds passed until the men walked slowly backward. They accelerated and ran away.

Keyly was still in rage and about to run after the three cowards but Jake gripped her arm to stop her.

When the men were out of sight, Keyly was the first speaking again.

• Jake, are you alright? -

He faced her and hugged her neck carefully. His glance fell on her cuts.

They were a few inches long but not very deep in comparison to her body mass.

Blood seeped out and stained her snow white fur red. Jake was really scared, more then his dragoness seemed to be, he had never seen her injured.

• I am. I am. But what's with you? We have to bring you to hospital! -

• No. Don't worry. I'm alright...-

• Keyly, I'm feeling it hurts you! -

She admitted but she didn't want to get to any doctor.

Prior when they lived without humans around them, they hadn't this possibility too, she mentioned.

• Don't worry! Believe me... it won't kill me. -

• Keyly, I just don't want you to be injured... -

He turned around from her.

• Oh you... It's only my fault, if I would have been more carefully he wouldn't have hit you... -

• Jake..., things happen! -, she said with a careless voice.

Jake glanced at her. His head was only a few inches away from her slightly smiling snout.

The entire situation rushed through his mind. It had been a simple, normal day like every other until a few minutes. He couldn't believe how she just could take it careless like this but he was also glad they had survived without being injured even worse.

When they heard the siren of a police car between the quiet city-noises he startled and Keyly interrupted the silence:

• Let's fly away before anyone tells questions! -

• I don't think they will... So, are you really sure you can fly yet? -

• It's not a problem! -

He glanced at her once more, slightly worrying since he knew her wounds burned like fire but when she lowered her body a little, inviting him on her back, he stepped up nonetheless.

Jake had thought about before, to call the police but he knew it would be senseless, even with Keyly's testimony; it would have been a long process to bring them to court if they could even find the guys.

This time they flew straight to their apartment and minutes later they reached the large balcony of their penthouse. Jake had arranged a large foldable wall instead of a door which they had left open. So they had always a great platform to land or just to spend time outside.

• I think I should take a shower. Alright? -

• Do what you need... but please..., when I can do anything for you, tell me! -

For the part of a second he thought she would think about something but she said no afterwards. Jake remained in the living room when she leaved.

He remembered about the great self healing capabilities dragons had. A magician had told him about that dragons could recover even from very deep injuries in short time. But he didn't know exactly what those stories meant for his dragoness.

When Keyly had finished she entered the living room still slightly wet. Normally she would have flown outside to get dry but this time she didn't felt about doing so. She walked to the balcony where Jake was standing viewing the surroundings. The city was pretty quiet 200 feet over the ground. Only the wind was hearable.

Keyly's fur and scales were shining brightly white again. He gave her a friendly hug around her wet neck when she joined him.

Jake looked at her chest trying to find the cuts the man had caused her. There wasn't blood anymore and they were almost fully invisible through her fur. He hadn't expected this, since only around an hour had passed. He was slightly facilitated but Keyly had noted where he was looking at.

• Really..., why are you worrying that much? I said I'm alright! -, she said smiling.

• Sorry, it's just... well... I'm your keeper and I like you too much to stay quiet when you are injured like this. -

She laughed smiling and wrapped her large wing around him. His shirt got slightly wet but her pain had fully eased so he knew she was ok.

• Ok, I think I've worried a bit too much. It's only; you have never been injured like this before. -

He was about to turn back and just sleep again like nothing happened.

She just lay there with her right wing around him and with her head resting on her arm.

Jake sighed relaxed and smiled at her. Her body heat was still warming him up and it was just too comfy to stand up. He glanced slowly over her gorgeous head and body. She was still purring with every breath. It was just... cute. Even more, if possible, than in the night when she had just hatched from the egg.
