Resolution
On the dawn of a new year, a loving couple resolve to take their relationship to the next level, in a way they both know can never be undone.

The air was crisp and cold, escaping Peter's lips in great plumes of condensation as he stood face to face, eye to eye with Sam. Similar plumes escaped the tiger's lips too, their mouths open slightly and mere inches apart, noses practically brushing as they clung to one another tenderly. The night was so calm, for now at least, and the hilltop upon which they stood was even more so. Below, in the distance to the south, there shone the glimmering lights of the city that both men called home. And within that city hundreds of thousands of people were counting down just like the two of them. Humans, anthros, creatures of all shapes and sizes counting down the seconds until a new and special day burst into being.
But none of them, not a single one of them, could possibly have understood how important a day tomorrow was going to be for Peter.
The human and the tiger stood in one another's arms, watching, smiling, lingering on that knife's edge of tension as their lips rested so close to one another but failed to meet. They danced. Turning, swaying to formless, utterly inaudible music, but dancing nonetheless. They stood in silence as they danced, not needing words. Not needing anything but one another. At least, not for some time. Not until Sam broke that silence with a soft, tender, almost nervous growl as he looked down at the city once more and then back to the human trembling in his embrace.
"It... it must almost be time now. Are you sure, my sweet?"
Peter grinned. He lifted his hands away from where they were resting around Sam's back, and instead pressed them tenderly to the tiger's face. He cupped the feline male's furred cheeks, caressing them fondly before withdrawing one hand, pressing it to his lips, then to Sam's in turn. A deep purr escaped the tiger, and he kissed the tips of Peter's fingers in turn, nodding as the human returned that kiss to his own face with a shiver of joy and a single murmured word.
"Yes."
Taking a deep breath, the human wrapped his arms around Sam once again as the tiger did just as he had done; taking his furred, clawed hands and placing them upon the smooth, dark skin of Peter's face. He drew that face to his own. Closer. Closer. So close their lips were almost brushing, almost touching. Peter shivered and pressed himself closer, ever more urgently against the tiger's strong frame.
"I'm ready."
Peter murmured as he closed his eyes, lips pursing together hopefully, longingly.
"I... I've been ready since the day we met. But... it was still worth the wait. You will always be worth the wait, Samrat."
A loud boom rang out in the distance, followed by the ringing of bells. Another boom, and another, and Sam and Peter's faces were bathed in light as fireworks began to erupt over the city from one of its larger parks. For a moment the two men turned their faces to watch, to admire the display as it began with crackling stars and streaking rockets. Then they turned back to one another. Then Peter smiled, and he trembled in pure elation as the tiger smiled right back at him, shaking just as potently within his arms.
"Happy new year, Sam. The very first of the rest of our lives."
Peter whispered to the tiger, to the beautiful creature who in the last year had transformed his life. Had brought him such joy, such contentment as he had never known before. And who now, at long last, was willing and able to give him exactly what he had known he wanted from the first time he felt his hand slide into the tiger's own, and felt Sam's reassuring squeeze letting him know that everything was going to be okay.
Samrat kissed him. At last. Oh god, at last the tiger kissed him. A deep, long, passionate and wonderful kiss. A kiss that began so tentatively despite how long they had known and loved one another, a kiss they dared not rush into given how long they had waited for it, but one which they could not hold back for long once it got started. Their hands grasped ever more lovingly and yet urgently at one another. Their faces pressed more feverishly together. Tongues touched one another, brushing past lips and teasing, exploring in realms unknown. They had shared so much, so many things so many times together. But never this. Never a kiss, not even one. For they knew what weight such a kiss would carry, and what changes such a kiss would make to the lives they had led before, and the lives they would continue to lead for the rest of their days.
Sam growled as he felt Peter's lips pressing more fiercely against his. More firmly, more forcefully, until soon it became clear that this was more than just a lover's joyous desperation. The tiger moaned as he felt his lover's face shifting, and as in the flickering light of the ongoing fireworks he peered into Peter's eyes and saw them shift from pale green to rich amber, just like his own. Sam felt the body in his arms shifting and quaking, not altering all too drastically in size, but changing shape to an absolutely exceptional degree. Fur sprang from Peter's hands. From his face. From every inch of exposed skin and all that lay hidden away beneath his clothing too. A deep grunt escaped the changing human as a tail burst from the base of their spine and rapidly sprouted fur of its own, striped and twitching, and as whiskers burst from the sides of their newly formed and panting, gasping muzzle Sam could feel their bodies being forced a little further apart by the growth of breasts beneath his lover's thick winter jacket.
"I love you."
The voice that escaped the rapidly changing form within Sam's arms was not that of the man he had known and loved back, and yet at the same time, as different as it sounded, Samrat knew that it was. The soul, the spirit, all that mattered of the person he loved and adored was still there. But now, with the bond of their kiss forged and cast into being, the body of the creature that had been Peter the human was gone. The last vestiges of his former self fading away, though not destroyed, not even cast aside. Re-ordered. Re-invented. Created anew, the same soul in a fresh body, with a fresh heart born of their love, and a fresh name with which to speak of it.
"I love you, Samrat."
The tigress purred as her ears twitched in the cold air, leaning in closer still to the man before her and nuzzling against his face. Licking him upon the tip of his nose before realising that she didn't have to hold back any more, and kissing him on the lips instead.
He purred. He chuffed happily, instinctively at her, and she giggled as the same happy sound escaped her in return.
"And I love you..."
Sam began to murmur, only to have his voice trail off and to feel his cheeks flushing as he realised that he did not yet know the name of his lover. The name that would rise in her heart just as surely as the name Samrat had risen in his when he was first transformed by the kiss of a far more impulsive, far less devoted tigress.
"Tora."
The tigress whispered, pecking him gently on the lips once more. He grinned, nodding and resting his forehead against hers gratefully as yet more fireworks burst across the sky over the shimmering lights of the city. Fireworks that for the rest of the population were ringing in the new year, but for the two of them up on that hillside, overlooking it all, were ringing in so very much more. Not just a year, but a lifetime of future joy.
"I love you too, Tora. With all that I am, all that I ever was, and all that I ever will be, my sweet."
