Ch. 1, The Journey Begins

Balto sniffed the air as he and his brother Troy made their way through the alleyways of Nome. "Well, the butcher should be opening up soon," he said, "Can you smell anything for breakfast?"

"Steele is it?" came a voice and up on a window sill was a black cat perched upon the ledge, "Are you sure you weren't originally called 'Rusty'? Because your brains sure act that way." One of the dogs groaned and whispered, "Oh... Burn!"

“I'm Troy this is my brother Balto," Troy said with a smile

"Nice to meet you guys," said the feline as he hopped onto one of the trash cans, "Can I show you something terrific?" He hopped upon another window ledge where some of the best meat was hanging by some string. Nathan smirked as he used his claws to cut the string and one slab of meat fell to the ground. "Lunch is on me boys," he said as he hopped down from the window, "But better make it to go before the butcher finds out."

Troy looked at Balto then Nathan nodding taking it and the duo took off.

They ran all the way to the barge the two wolf brothers were staying in and Nathan was walking along the wooden support beams holding up the boat. "You know, for a moment, I thought this was Noah's ark, but then I remembered that it was supposed to be much bigger," said the cat, "Anyway, what brought you two rascals into town aside from breakfast?"

"Well we are casing out spots to watch the sled race tomorrow," Troy said with a smile as Troy and Balto split the steak in half

"Did you ever think of joining in? They don't call them 'dog sleds' for nothing," said Nathan he perched himself on the boat railing.

"Well, I haven't had my supper yet. So, I might as well be heading back into town... Maybe find a nice restaurant to scope out," said Nathan as he jumped from the wheel house roof to the railing and then down a sloping support beam.

“Quite the interesting cat don't you think brother?," Troy asked looking at Balto.

"I'll say," said Balto yawning as he got up, "I think I might follow him for a bit just in case." He then hopped off the boat and followed Nathan into town trying to keep out of sight. Though when he reached town, he was shocked to see that Nathan was nearing Steele's home.

The cat perched himself upon the corner of a roof top watching Steele head out the door of his home and saw he was making his way towards a group of female dogs that were calling to the malamute. Nathan smirked. "Now my work really begins," he thought as he jumped from roof top to window ledge before landing at the bedroom window of Steele's house. He peeked in and sniffed the air. You may have friends and family that try to keep things positive for you but in the end you still end up not being picked all because of your looks. Nathan sighed. He knew he would get nowhere at this rate and would allow Balto this one victory. But tomorrow, he would hatch a plan to help Balto join the race.
