Soul Rebirth - Hellraven Shade origin (No TF)
When the soul of a fallen witch crosses a dying hellhound, things sure do happen!
The Patreon-voted story for April, an origin for the Hellaverse version of Shade. I do still need to start watching Helluva Boss, I will admit X3 But after watching through Hazbin Hotel, I wanted to adapt Shade into that setting ^^
And yeah, rated mature due to both the violence and the amount of swearing involved :P

“Hhahh… haaahh… are you really gonna keep dragging this fight on for any longer?” A female, wolf-like creature asked, panting as she took a moment to catch her breath, resting against a long, blood-soaked sword. “I know you sinners are extra durable, but you’re pushing the limit of what you can take!”
“Rhh..hrhhh…” The creature she was facing, a blue, shark-like beast, was also trying to regain his composure, with various cuts and bruises over their body. “Oh trust me, I’m not going to stop until you’re six feet underground, bitch!”
“You… REALLY have issues, you know that?” She gripped the handle of her sword tight, staring down her adversary. “I don’t even know what I did to get on your bad side, but holding a petty grudge really isn’t the best way to spend your afterlife!”
“Oh really?” He snarled in response. “A lowly hellhound’s trying to preach to me about the best way to spend my time down here? I’ll do whatever I damn well please!”
“Yeah, trying to turn my friends on me just because I somehow managed to get on your bad side, no-one’s buying that shit you’re trying to sell, ya know!”
“Oh they will if I keep shoving it down their throats. I was quite good at manipulating people whilst I was alive, so why not make the most of that down here and do the same thing?”
The hellhound just looked at him coldly. “That’s just fucking pathetic… Rulan, was it?”
“YOU’RE FUCKING PATHETIC!!!” The shark charged, pulling a knife out from a holster attached to his waist, lunging at the hellhound. She dodged out of the way, leading to him crashing face-first into the wall. “GAH… grgghh…!” He recoiled, holding his snout in his hands.
“See, you’re just proving my point here. Why don’t you just give up before you hurt yourself any more?” She tried to talk some sense into him. “Let some air out of that overly inflated ego of yours!”
“Ghh..” He turned to face her, spitting out some blood along with a tooth. “I said I’m not giving up until I’ve killed you!”
“Rulan, you could go your entire afterlife trying to kill me and just fail every time, is this really a productive use of your time?” She sighed.
“Oh-ho-ho trust me, if you want to see productive, I haven’t even gotten started!” He charged at her once more.
“Ugh, you’re not gonna stop until I really beat some sense into you, aren’t ya?” She growled, sidestepping him as she reached for her sword again. Before she could grab it, Rulan’s tail wrapped around the hilt, pulling it from the ground. “What the?!”
“No, but I’ll stop once I’ve done THIS!” He grinned, swinging the sword towards her. Before she could dodge, it sliced through her right arm, cutting it clean off, a sharp scream of pain leaving her mouth.
“GAAAAHHHH!!”
“Did that hurt?” He said with a taunting grin, the hellhound doubling over in pain.
“Ghhh… you slimy little asshole…” She hissed through gritted fangs, grasping at her bloodied stump of a shoulder. “You’re not going to get away with this!”
“I’m not? Look at me, I’ve taken all that you can give me and I’ll be as good as new in a day or two. You? You’re not getting that arm back!”
“You wormy piece of…”
“But hey, why should I settle for just your arm? I’m gonna finish the job here and now!” He laughed, brandishing her sword.
“Crap…” She knew she had to get out of there, but the pain she was in had her almost fully immobilised. He took a swing at her with the sword, and she had just enough energy to roll out of the way - unfortunately, she was greeted with a stab in the back from the knife he was holding. The hellhound howled in pain just as he drove her sword right into her chest. “GHHH!”
“There we go~” Rulan smirked cruelly, pulling the sword out of her, tossing it aside. “I could do a lot more to you, but I think I’ll leave you to bleed out, spending your last few moments in pure agony. Who knows, perhaps you’ll make some cannibal’s day when they get to feed on your corpse!”
“You… pathetic… son of a bitch…” She glared at him defiantly. “You deserve to be down here…”
“Maybe I do, but now there’ll be one less freak looking at me funny to deal with. See you never, bitch!” He cackled, walking away.
“Damn it…” She sighed, her vision fading. “Of all the lousy dicks to get taken out by…” She looked up towards the blood-red sky. “He’ll get his soon enough… I just wish I could have seen him… get it…” As her eyes closed, she could vaguely make out something flickering before her failing vision, some odd form of light dancing before her.

“These clowns just don’t want to quit!”
A female creature, avian in nature, was standing her ground against a group of humans clad in robes, slinging spells at them.
“I’m not doing anything to cause you any harm, so why are you all coming after me?”
“Because you’re an accursed beast!” One of the humans spoke, pointing at her. “You bring corruption and depravity wherever you go!”
“Corruption and depravity? I’m turning humans into better versions of themselves - proud, powerful beasts! They’re not doing harm to any of you!”
“They’re not now, but they will eventually! They’re above us humans, and soon they’ll try and overthrow us!”
“You’re nuts!”
“There’s only one way of dealing with you, and that’s by sending your unholy soul to hell!”
“Come on, you really need to chill out. Perhaps a little change in perspective will help you relax…” She said with a smirk, beginning to charge up magic in her clawed hands. Before she could do so, she suddenly fell forwards, blood trailing out of her beak. “Wh… what…” She looked down, a crossbow bolt sticking out of her chest.
“Like I said, this is the only way of dealing with you…” The leader of the group stepped forwards, pulling out his own crossbow. She looked behind her, spotting a figure who had snuck in without her noticing, having struck her from behind.
“You… you REALLY better hope that you put me down with this shot…” She glared at them - she attempted to charge up another spell, only to get met with another bolt striking her shoulder, a screech of pain leaving her mouth.
“Oh trust me, I don’t plan on missing…” He took aim at her head, his finger around the trigger…
~~~~~~
“FUCK!!!”
The hellhound lunged forwards, sitting up in a cold sweat. Her heart beat rapidly as she looked up at the ceiling of her apartment. “...wait a moment…” She paused, looking around in confusion. “How did I end up back here? I thought for sure that fishy fucker killed me…” She placed her hand on her right shoulder, surprised to not be feeling a bloodied stump, running her hand down her limb.
“O…K… this is weird… Maybe I need to lay off the Beezlejuice before I sleep…” She jumped off of her bed, walking over to the mirror. She wanted to see if she even had the stab wounds that were inflicted on her, but what she saw confused her even more. Her fur was now mostly black with what appeared to be feathers along her lower arms, as well as the two eldritch, runed wings that were spread out behind her. Her tail was slightly longer, a thick tuft of silvery-white fur spread out three quarters of the way down. Her hands were longer with glowing purple claws that matched the swirling, rune-like markings on her stomach, thighs and breasts, her lower legs sporting avian talons rather than canine paws. Finally, her muzzle had been replaced with a sharp-looking beak, yet it was still full of fangs, her eyes glowing purple with red irises instead of red with white. “Am I having some kind of near-death experience, or have I ended up in Double Hell?”
‘Double Hell? Is that even a thing?’ a voice rang in her head, making her jump.
“What the?!” She gasped.
‘Hey, I’m just as surprised as you are!’ The voice responded. ‘Mind filling me in on where I am?’
“Er… you’re in Hell.” The hellhound said, bluntly.
‘Ha ha. Seriously, where am I?’
“No, really. You’re in Hell!” She walked to the window of her apartment, pointing towards a sign in the distance that read “WELCOME TO HELL. POPULATION - A FUCKTON.”
‘... REALLY?!’ The voice squawked, making her jump again. ‘I know the leader of that group of nutjobs said he was gonna send me to hell, but I didn’t think he meant it literally! Urg… still, better looking than Detroit, I suppose… Wait… so that means I’m dead?’
“Oh yeah. And yet somehow, I’m not. Seriously, I had been left for dead by that freak Rulan, and the next thing I know, I’m back in my room, no worse for wear, and looking nothing like I did before!”
‘Hrm… come to think of it, between getting shot in the head and waking up in here, I recall seeing something lying in a pool of blood and missing an arm. It looked like their soul was leaving their body…’
“Wait… you don’t think I’m alive because your soul entered my body instead of taking on its own form?”
‘I mean, it’s a possibility. Go back to the mirror, maybe I can show you who I was before all of this happened!’
The hellhound obliged, walking back to her mirror. Standing beside her was a tall, raven-looking critter that didn’t look too different from how she did now.
“Wow, I look just like you! I mean, the hellhound side’s showing a tiny bit more than the avian side, but still!”
‘I guess my soul decided to give your body a bit of a transformation… heh, even in death, I’m still able to work my magic~’ The voice giggled. ‘Any humans down here that I might be able to help bring out their inner beasts?’
“Humans?” She cocked her head. “This place is full of junkies, freaks and weirdos, creepers, fuck-ups, crooks and zeros, and even a few downfallen superheroes, but there’s no humans down here. Closest thing there is to humans would be the cannibals.”
‘.... Well that sucks.’ The spirit of the raven sighed.
“Hey, there might be a few demons here and there that might want some of what you’re offering!”
‘Maybe, but if they’re all monsters, there’s little that can be done in regards to changing or improving them.’
“Surely you’ve got other magic to show off, though!”
‘Hrm… I do have other magic on hand, I’ve just never had to rely on it too much since most of what I did involved transformation.’
“Use some of that, then! I’m sure you might be able to work your transformational magic with some fiends, but as long as you’ve got other spells on hand, I’m sure you’ll have plenty to work with!”
‘I suppose, but transformation was kinda my thing…’ She sulked.
“I’m sure we’ll figure something out, but for now, baby steps! Although if it makes you feel better, you did kinda transform me!”
‘Yeah, I did, didn’t I?’ A faint smile crossed the raven’s beak.
“And like I said, there might be some demons who want a small upgrade or two, so I wouldn’t worry about having a lack of stuff to transform!”
‘Thank you! I suppose it’s lucky that our paths crossed like this, isn’t it?’
“You’re telling me, I thought I was literally cannibal chow!” The hellhound chuckled.
‘I’m glad that I was able to save you from that fate then…’ The raven paused. ‘Heh, with everything going on, I forgot to ask for your name!’
“The name’s Shade!”
‘Sh… heh… hehe… hahahaha!’ The avian creature giggled softly before erupting into laughter.
“What’s so funny about that?” Shade tilted her head.
‘My name’s Shade as well!’ She continued to laugh.
“You’re also… heh… fate, you crafty fucker…” Shade grinned. “It’s gonna get a little bit confusing if we call each other Shade, but then again, we’re one and the same.”
‘If it helps, just call me the Inner Shade!’
“Let’s see how that goes. For now, I could do with some fresh air, so why don’t we step outside?”
‘Sounds good to me!’ The avian form of Shade vanished from the mirror, leaving the hellhound/raven form of her to grab some fresh clothes, heading outside.
“And here I thought I wasn’t gonna see this sky again!” She stretched her arms and wings wide. “I guess this must be what it feels like for a sinner when they heal up!”
‘Never having died before now, I honestly couldn’t tell you. Still, the scenery around here doesn’t look too bad!’
“Oh, you haven’t seen anything yet - this is only the Pride ring. There are six other rings to explore down here, hopefully I can still get between them as I’m technically harbouring the soul of a sinner, and normally they’re limited to this ring.”
‘Hopefully I’m not limiting you in that regard, I’d be curious to see everything that Hell has to offer, seeing I’m down here for the long haul.’
“Why don’t we go and see right now, then? After that, I could go for some food, and one of the best places I know is in the -”
“Well well well!” A familiar voice chimed in from behind Shade. “I thought I killed your lousy ass a few hours ago!”
“Urg, no…” She groaned, rolling her eyes as she turned to face Rulan.
‘Let me guess, not a fan of yours?’ Inner Shade asked.
“You don’t know the HALF of it…” Shade responded mentally. “Look, you’ve already killed me once, why don’t you just call it quits knowing that you got the better of me?”
“Oh I would, but then I’ve already told my friends that I outright murdered you. I even showed them a picture of your corpse to boot! Do you want me to look like a liar?”
“No, but I’d rather not have to deal with you any more than I have to. You had your little victory over me, so just take that and move on with your life!”
“Yeah, I suppose I could do that… but at the same time…” He pulled out a six-shooter, aiming it square at Shade’s head, pulling the trigger. The hybrid creature fell lifeless to the ground as the shot rang out around them. “I’d prefer it this way. Knowing you’re super dead gives me peace of mind!”
Rulan stood over the fallen Shade, looming over her. “I might even take a part of you home as a trophy, make you a decoration for everyone to see just what happens to anyone who messes with Rulan!”
He knelt down slightly to take a closer look at Shade, smirking at the dead beast. Suddenly, her eyes snapped open. “What the?!”
“You… REALLY should have hoped that you put me down with that shot, you lowlife shitbag!” She glared daggers at him, the red colour of her irises bleeding out into the purple of her sclera, a dark aura surrounding her. Before he could even try to fire off a second shot, Shade’s hand clamped around his neck, squeezing it tight.
“Gurk!” He choked as she got back to her feet, raising him above her.
“All you had to do was walk away and take your little victory, but no, your head’s too far up your own ass to know when to quit!” The markings across her body turned an angry crimson, a pair of additional eyes opening close to her original set.
“Let… go of me… you bitch!” He growled defiantly, legs kicking at Shade’s torso.
“If that’s what you want!” She grinned from ear to ear, raising him up before viciously chokeslamming him to the ground, leaving a small crater.
“GAAHH!” He cried out in pain.
“Did that hurt? I haven’t even gotten STARTED!” Shade extended her other hand, the hellhound’s sword appearing from out of nowhere, only sporting a crimson sheen that matched her glowing markings. “There’s so many things I could do to you… I mean, you took my arm off earlier, so why don’t I return the favour?” She gripped the sword tight as she swung, slicing through the shark’s right arm, blood erupting from the severed limb.
“FUUUCK!” Rulan screamed as Shade picked the arm up, looking over it before she tossed it away.
“I can only imagine how painful that felt…” She chuckled, her gaze moving towards his crotch. “How about we get to work on carving out your cock and rearrange everything down there so it matches what you are - a complete and utter cunt?!”
“Gh…” He appeared to whimper, his other hand moving to shield his groin.
“Not a fan? I won’t lie, I’m very tempted to do some impromptu surgery…” She trailed her blade around his stomach before pulling it away. “But you know what, I’m gonna do what you didn’t do to me - offer you some mercy.”
“H…huh?”
“Simple - stay the fuck out of my life, don’t even mention me to your friends unless it’s about how I kicked your ass from one side of the pentagram to the other, and if our paths cross again, you keep your mouth shut. Do that, and I’ll let you go… do we have a deal?”
“Gh… ghh…” Rulan looked up at Shade, still sporting a defiant glare.
“Maybe I didn’t make myself clear enough…” Her foot pressed against his head, the ground underneath him beginning to sizzle and boil, steam rising from it. She put some pressure on his head, lowering it nearer to the ground. “Do we… have… a deal?”
“Ghh…gaaahhh!!” He screamed, the sheer heat emanating from the ground causing his face to blister. “OK, OK, WE HAVE A DEAL!!!” He yelled out in a mix of fear and pain. The ground immediately cooled off, Shade removing her foot from his face.
“Good… that wasn’t so hard, was it?” She smirked, playfully patting his shoulder, and as she raised her hand, he briefly noticed a deep purple chain in her grasp, a violet collar around his neck. “Now get your worthless ass out of my sight before I change my mind!”
The shark demon whimpered, getting back to his feet as he ran off, not even thinking of going back for his arm. Shade slowly calmed down, her markings and sclera regaining their purple glow.
‘Woah… I don’t think I’ve ever felt that level of rage before!’ Inner Shade commented.
“You and me both… still, I liked it!” Shade laughed. “We really showed him what’ll happen if he tries to mess with us again - or any demon, for that matter!”
‘I wouldn’t start getting in over your head just yet - I don’t know the full extent of what demons are capable of.’
“That’s true, but it’s something we can work on. Also, I think I might own his soul now, given I technically made a deal with him.” She looked at the chain she was holding before it vanished.
‘Does that mean anything?’
“It might - Overlords are known for owning lots and lots of damned souls, so I suppose my owning one soul might be a stepping stone for that. I dunno if I’m Overlord material, though…”
‘Owning lots of souls, huh…’ Inner Shade mused. ‘You did mention about some demons wanting improvements and whatnot, maybe I could string a few deals with them!’
“I mean, it could work!” She shrugged. “I’m not just some run of the mill hellhound anymore!”
‘More like a hellraven, if that’s a thing!’
“It isn’t, but I do like the sound of that!” Shade grinned.
‘Nice~’ She chirped. ‘I wonder if there’s a way I could make my way back up to the realm of the living, though? I’d like to find the group of people who killed me and put them in their place…’
“There just might be~” Shade glanced over towards a wall where a flyer was crudely attached to it, advertising a service called I.M.P - Immediate Murder Professionals. “These guys work in tying up loose ends that sinners had when they were alive, though as the name implies, it involves killing those who sent them to Hell to begin with!”
‘And they’d be able to help me with that?’
“Oh yeah, without a doubt! I know their receptionist, she’s a little on the rough side, but she’s a real sweetie when you get to know her!”
‘Perfect, because I’ve got a few ideas for what I’d like to see inflicted upon those guys!’
“We’ll sort that out tomorrow, though - I don’t know about you, but dying, coming back to life, and nearly having an impromptu fish-fry has made me just the teensiest bit hungry, and I know a nice place in the Gluttony ring that does some AMAZING food!”
‘By all means, lead the way, Shade~’ Inner Shade chirped, the hellraven whistling to herself as she walked away, making her way towards the closest elevator station. Neither version of her envisioned this happening to them today, but fate always works in mysterious ways.
