#3 of Starting Anew

Alright, time for things to start getting interesting rather than lolling about. I decided to run with something funny I found online. The person who guesses it wins a prize!

Friends and Foes

Davis was having a good day so far. The flight was a success and he was back on Earth, in the gym, punching a bag with Wedge on the other side while they also pound out what happened in their lives between when they had parted company at the end of the Dragon War and now. Wedge has had three girlfriends and is busy on the fourth now. He's pleased when Davis says he got with Saphyra, calling it a sure to happen thing. He also says he won the pool. Shaking his head, Davis makes a roundhouse kick on the bag and surprises Wedge, putting him on the ground for a second. "Easy there Tiger!" He calls.

Saphyra, meanwhile, is outside off in the open space between the runway and hangars, preoccupied with getting the last of the armor set up and in place, a crewman on her back checking the systems for a new automated minigun put on her back, railgun technology finally used to fire at the rate of 2000 rounds per minute. This would be the last day of setting everything up. Everything had been tested out and determined to be functioning better than expected. It only takes fifteen minutes before the minigun is cleared, and another fifteen after that for her to finally allow the crew to leave, her armor comfortable. She then walks around and flies for a short flight, getting used to the gear. Another hour sees her landing and taking off the armor and systems much like a human soldier takes off his or her own gear. She then goes to find Davis.

It's a simple matter for her to find him, he's in the base rec building with a few other pilots, playing one of their video games. Street Fighter. The men seem to be all into it, oohing and cheering at good hits and talking shit to each other. She sits down and watches, admitting to herself that the game was interesting. She hadn't seen humans as strong as those fighters in the games, but if they truely can get that strong, they beat out the elves in it, by a long shot. To think, her race almost joined with that one. After the fight, she gets Davis' attention, then they go out to eat.

Fayetteville, North Carolina

Cynder was also out to eat, but no male by her side. Only Gharna and Diamond were nearby and upon finding out what happened the next morning, hadn't left Cynder alone for more than half a day. She was better, losing the one you wanted to be with was always bad, she's had it happen twice. Now they are talking and joking to each other in a club downtown. "So Cynder, what are your plans for tomorrow?" Diamond asks, a little flushed from the nice drinks in the club.

Cynder nods. "I'll be going back to school. Just cuz my mate left me doesn't mean I need to take time off. I'm not some weak human female." She picks up her drink and takes a good sized pull. She had fallen in love with Guiness beer ever since she was exposed to it.

Gharna grins at her and raises an eyeridge. "You've proved that, you've drank twice as much as I've seen any human girl drink." She says. "Don't you have work tomorrow?" Cynder shrugs and takes another pull, getting the two other dragonesses to laugh. "Have you ever thought about going back to full time service?" Gharna asks, looking right at Cynder, who is looking down at her Guiness as she thinks about it.

"Not before now." She says. "I love teaching those kids, but I'm a bit on in my years and haven't had a clutch of my own yet." She says. "It is a constant reminder, seeing them all in there every day, day after day." She sighs and empties her glass, intending to get another one.

Diamond looks at her as she does then, then at her watch, then gets up. "I have to go." She says. "I have early morning duty tomorrow." She rests a hand on Cynder's shoulder. "You should call Spyro, you know." She says. "He's still single." She knows it because he hit on her not two nights ago. This makes Cynder stop and look around at her, but she says nothing. Gharna stays to keep her company, the pair aren't drinking alone for long.

Several Months Later

Davis sighs as he finally sees the red planet of Mars before him, rapidly enlarging after a two hour flight at maximum thrust. He, Wedge, and the rookie, now with the callsign of Goose, flying with Saphyra in the longer patrol, ever since a landing three months in the past began the colonization efforts of Mars. The colony, as he soon sees as he enters the atmosphere, is progressing quickly, especially with the help of dragons. He expects that the dragons will show more usefulness in a few days, after a category 5 hurricane is expected to tear thru Florida. He takes his formation silently over the colony, seeing a few dragons out flying about, mostly with work crews, helping to raise stuff up, dig holes, and also, watching some of their workers as they work high up, a safety net in case they fall. Another is putting the top of what will be a water tower up on top of its base. A white dragon takes off with the site safety inspector on his back.

Banking around, Davis leads the formation back over the main part of the colony, talking with Saphyra in the quiet privacy of their Bond as they go over the capital building, occassionally piping in on the conversation Wedge is having with Goose. "I'm telling you." Goose says. "Give it time and these guys will be as thriving as we are on Earth." Goose was saying, Wedge retorting that we can't terraform the planet to match Earth. Davis keeps to himself on that. He knows Earth needs work too. There are massive efforts underway in Africa and South America right now by the dragons to revitalize the burt rain forests. The two races are still sorting out the mess in Europe, trying to defuse and disarm nuclear warheads in England, France, and Russia. Just because they couldn't track the dragons didn't mean they weren't ready to throw the nukes at a large force in the middle of nowhere. "Alright guys, let's head on back home." Davis says, interrupting them and banking up for space.

Five minutes later they were headed back to Earth when Wedge's voice pipes up. "Lead, I've got a zombie at about 930." He says. Davis looks at his radar. He had let himself get lax on the trip back with Saphyra toying at him with riddles. "Rodger that, we'll do a flyby." He banks his fighter left and zips off, seeing the contact on his short range radar. "Attention unknown. You have entered Earth space. Identify yourself."

There is a long minute of silence, then a voice comes up. "Greetings brothers and sister, I am Topaz of the Raptorian Republic of Theria." Comes the reply. "I come bearing a gift and to be envoy and abassador on behalf of my government."

~I was wondering when Theria would send an official delegation.~ Saphyra says in his mind. ~The raptors are allies of the dragons, and descended from the Utahraptor that once existed on Earth.~

Davis nods to both of these, then asks ~How does she know English?~

Saphyra's amusement at this makes him blush a little. ~They have what you would call a Universal Translator. It takes a little time to decipher a language then lets you speak it with no problem.~ Davis nods and gets on the radio again.

"Rodger. We'll escort you back to Earth." He says, sending a burst transmission of the conversation back to Earth. He can see the ship now, cockpit in the middle surrounded by two rods going out in front, and a swept fin on top that actually resembles a raptor's killing claw. He sends a picture of that back as well as he falls into formation with the ship.

"Your hospitality is most welcome." Comes the reply. "By God's grace we shall have a smooth flight."

Three hours they come into full view of Earth, and while Davis and the other Rogues listen to the raptor praising Earth's beauty from space, they come into the atmosphere, another squadron of fighters joining them once they are down and escorting them all to Langley, where the President himself is waiting to meet the ship. Davis is amazed to see a sky blue raptor get out, a feather crest in place of hair, and the feathers merging to white at their tips. She bows to the President, a small silver cross dropping out of her shirt, before she puts it back in. "It is an honor to finally meet the brother of dragon and raptor."

"Brother?" The President asks.

Topaz nods. "Yes. Each planet, by some quirk, produce a male dominated and female dominated race. Our Earth is fortunate enough to have produced three races, but yours is the one that is male." She says, a slight smile on her lips. The President nods, but it's clear he'll need an explanation of this later.

Then the President's gaze falls upon the Rogues. "Major Davis. It seems you and your squadron are always present when history is made." He says, returning the squadron's salutes.

"We're just lucky sir." Davis replies. "Had this happened yesterday or tomorrow it would be another squadron."

The President waves this off. "Nah, Fate has plans for you and your comrades, it seems." He turns back to the ambassador. "This way." He says. "I believe we have much to discuss."

Topaz nods. "Yes, but first, it is customary for one coming to another to present a gift." She motions with her arm to the raptor coming out of the ship with a small metal case. "Inside this case your scientists will find the secret to traveling to other stars, in addition to the location of my race's star, and our grid system for you to base your own off."

The President looks to Davis, then points to the case. "Major, if you would handle that?" Upon seeing Davis' nod, the President returns his gaze to Topaz. "On behalf of the people of the United States of America, I thank you for this gift." He says. "And extend the hand of friendship to you and your people." He offers his hand, and Topaz, smiling widely and toothily, takes his hand in hers and shakes gently, a few cameras in the back snapping their pictures and cameras zooming in on the hand shake, feeding to people all over the world, to cities in North America, to refugee camps elsewhere.

Davis turns and leaves, heading to a nearby jeep. It's a short ride to the base HQ where the commander is waiting for him. "Sir." He says as he walks in, saluting the commander. "The President wants this given to our top scientists." The commander nods and takes him straight to another jeep. From there they drive to the NASA research center that actually isn't too far away, flanked in front and back by a humvee with armed .50 cal railguns. Once there, he hands the briefcase to the head scientist.

Back at home that night, Davis is sitting on the couch cuddled with Saphyra in nothing but a t shirt and boxers, her in a thong and nothing else, watching the news. They show pictures of the meeting between human and raptor, calling it a historic meeting. The news then comes up to say that the raptor gave to humanity plans for constructing a warp drive and formulas for new alloys. "That reminds me!" Saphyra says, getting up and heading to the bedroom. I need to run by the store. I forgot, I wanted to buy a bottle of wine." She shoots him a wink and an impish grin, making him wonder what exactly the night will hold for him.

Saphyra leaves in a leather outfit, form fitting, with her belly showing between where the leather vest ends and her pants begin. Winking, she heads out, driving his car for once, and gets inside the local Target store. She grabs the most expensive bottle of red wine and buys it. On her way to the car tho, she stops. She feels something...out of place. She looks around, sniffing the air. "Hello Saphyra." She whirls around to see a male standing behind her, a cloak covering his head. He looks like a thin, nerdy human, but upon the man's removing the cloak, she realizes it is the prince of the Elves. "I've come for you." he says, walking over to her.

Saphyra growls and takes a step back. "I do not want you." She says, which stops the elf cold.

"Have you forgotten? You were promised to me." He says, his voice the same tone of a parent chiding his child for doing something foolish but not harmful.

Saphyra shakes her head. "I have another." She says. "A true Bond, formed out of love."

The elf looks at her. "You formed it from loneliness then..."

"You asshole." Saphyra snorts, cutting him off. "You act as if I have no mind of my own." She growls now, causing a couple nearby to go to the next lane to walk inside. "My father died, freeing me from his obligations, and I love someone else." She waves her hand. "Now leave."

The elf looks at her, shocked by the fact that she would talk to someone of the Elven Royalty that way. Then the true implications of her statement hit him. "If you break the pact between my family and yours it will mean war." He says.

Now it's Saphyra's turn to grasp his full implications. She stares at him in shock. "You would wipe out a race just to satisfy your sense of pride?"

The elf shakes his head. "I will have the humans wiped out to reclaim what it rightfully...what rightfully belongs with my race. Your race does not belong with a weak race like this. Your race belongs with we of the elves." He looks dead at her. "We shall give you one year. Make the wrong choice and we will strike." With that, he waves out, teleporting himself away.
