Marciana Abbatelli (Marci) & Ra'Arsenio Basilio (Arsen)
Part 1: The Meeting
A well kept secret within the Italian Mafia… the one based in Italy, not New York's Little Italy… is that the Abbatelli family was actually being run by a female. The femme was well dressed, though she did have an exotic flair about her, which, considering that she was Brazilian as well as Italian, made sense. An elegant teal-green full length gown clung lovingly to her body, a thigh high slit on the left side showing off a pair of black, Louboutin 'Botalili' boots with 120 mm heels that clung to her calves. A small black leather clutch-purse was in her paw, which was graced with a golden bracelet that was nearly hidden within her fur at her wrist. Two of the Abbatelli soldiers followed her into the restaurant she was having a meeting at, though they knew to move to a different table as she reached hers and slid into a seat with her back against the wall. Her grey-teal eyes roamed the darkened interior behind the green crystal Salvatore Ferragamo sunglasses. This meeting had been set up for a while. In fact, the femme's father, Giancarlo Abbatelli, had set it up before the stroke took him down and left the business in his barely legal, 18-year-old daughter's hands. Marciana Abbatelli flicked her tail behind her as she waited for the male she was meeting to show up. She didn't know exactly what her father had in mind when he set up this meeting, since this male was an unknown in the business.
The Grotta Palazzese in Polignano a Mare was a unique restaurant in that it was truly built into the cliffs above the sea just outside the city of Bari, Italy. There were tables right over the crashing waves, though the table she had gone to was deeper within to keep assassins from taking her out during this meeting. Setting the purse down on the table next to her plate, she lifted her head and smiled to the waiter who looked over. Without a word being spoken, he brought her over a glass of merlot and a glass of ice water.
From the far end of the restaurant, near the entrance to the grotto seating area, a figure appeared. He seemed to pause, though not exactly in hesitation, and take in the environment for a few moments. At once he then advanced and approached through the tables, deftly dodging the other visitors and moving as if with purpose, with belonging. It was, indeed, a male. Tall and lithe, the white fur that covered his body slightly bushy around his neck. The Serval's ears were tipped with black and rose from the top of his head in an alert stance. Black spots and stripes could be seen disappearing into the fabric of his onyx colored Milanese shirt, unbuttoned three down. The pants matched, though they were more casual than her own leather. Around his neck a pair of plain gold chains encircled.
On his paws, which he held out to his sides in a gesture of open greeting and a show that he held no weapons, were one ring each. The fur there as white as the fur on his neck. Ra'Arsenio Basilio was his name, and this femme, Giancarlo Abbatelli's daughter, Marciana. He feigned ignorance of her identity, and proffered a deep bow to her and with a purrr from his throat he greeted her, “Mia signora.." (My Lady) The male didn't wait for a welcome or greeting, before slipping out the chair across from her and easing into it. “I was expecting someone else."
“Ti aspettavi Signore Abbatelli, mio padre. Purtroppo, non era in grado di fare questo incontro e mi ha mandato in sua vece, anche se ha fatto chiedermi di riportarvi a vederlo quando la nostra attività è stata completata, (You were expecting Mr. Abbatelli, my father. Unfortunately, he was unable to make this meeting and sent me in his stead, though he did ask me to bring you back to see him when our business was completed, - Italian)" the young canine replied. “I am Marciana Abbatelli," she lifted her merlot and gave a slight salute to him as the waiter hurried back over.
“Signore? What would you like?" the young otter asked, waiting patiently for the serval's order. Once he had it, he disappeared to get his drink prepared. A twinkle formed in the canine's eye as she looked at the lithe kitty across from her. “Before we start on business… what do you think of this little hotel and restaurant?" The twinkle in her eye said she was still young, not fully a business woman… yet. Or at least, that was the implication of said twinkle.
Ra'Arsenio made his order without looking toward the otter. An eyebrow quirked as she revealed that she was, indeed, the daughter of the man that he had expected to meet, as he surmised. This appointment had been set some months ago, long enough for both parties to check up and verify who their compatriot was and their legitimacy. The Abbatelli family was well known amongst the circles which Basilio frequented, but no one had ever been able to finger them definitely in any crime.
His head turned and he took in the surroundings once more, at her invitation. The singularly unique features of the space, with a commanding view of the ocean and the way the seating area was inset into the rock faces added to the grandeur of the place. He nodded slowly, “It is impressive. And beautiful." Sharp orange-yellow eyes strayed back to her and another purr left his lips, “Though my company is surely moreso."
A faint smile graced her muzzle at the compliment, and she responded, “Grazie mille. (Thank you very much. - Italian)" She lifted her paw, which compared to the embellishments of her accessories, was rather plain, just a thin gold bracelet gracing her wrist, nearly blending into her fur. “What you see around me, is my pride and joy. My father bought the property when I was younger, but nothing was here. It was only a couple years ago that I gave him the idea for what to put here. The hotel, the restaurant in the cliffs, even the rooms that are unique. Everyone employed here lives here in town, some even have rooms on the property if they moved from Naples or Rome while they look for places in Bari. The food served here is grown in Bari."
“But down to the business at hand. My father was unable to tell me much about this meeting, as he recently had a stroke and speaking is difficult for him. Maybe you could fill me in on some of the more pertinent details, Signore Basilio?" Her demeanor changed from pride and excitement regarding her resort to intense business of her family.
“As I said, impressive, and beautiful. I'm sure it is a gem here in Bari. In fact I recently brought a date here, and she too was impressed. A grand creation by a woman no less than her father, I deem." He stated, though he knew the way that things were with the families in Italy. Women did as their fathers and husbands told them to do. Marciana was the daughter of the family head, this put her in charge of vast amounts of wealth and power, the kind of thing dreams were made of. Only theirs was built on the backs of illegal drugs, trafficking, smuggling, crime. The kind of crime he was supposed to hunt down and snuff out… supposed to.
So, she knew his name, as judged by her referencing his in her statement, for he had not introduced himself yet. Her father must have told her only enough to start, “We were to discuss a recent transaction that your father and I worked on together. A" he paused, “completed transfer of goods that I saw safely to their destination." He was integrally responsible for ensuring that their most recent and most valuable drug run across the border to France had been successful and had passed through customs without a problem. “Your father was interested in a long-term partnership and the transaction was a test of that relationship."
She listened carefully to his words, then nodded, knowing of the shipment and its arrival at its destination. “It was good to get that shipment of Bari-made wine to France, as it is rather difficult to get France to import any wine. You must have some influence with folks there." It was rather obvious that she was fishing for details that he hadn't fully given her father yet, though Signore Abbatelli knew that Signore Basilio was Interpol. “Did mio padre (my father) discuss a payment for you for getting that shipment through?"
“He did," answered the Serval. They were dancing around the details here, testing the waters with one another and seeing how far they could push and pull. For his part, Arsen knew things about the deal that it was obvious she didn't know, and he wasn't inclined to tell her. It would be better for her father to explain, if he could, since it was a rather delicate agreement they had come to, “I have connections that your father found, ah...useful." He said with a curl to his lips and a twitch of his ears, “I can be very helpful in moving product that needs to be moved, wherever."
She chuckled, “Mio padre finds many things useful, but not always efficient - or efficient, but not useful. It appears that in you, he found both." She reached for her purse, then looked at him again, “Would you prefer your payment in cash, check or…?" Being that she was unaware of the payment talked about, she seemed a little more business-like than she would have had she known it was going to be more of a date-type meeting.
A soft chuckle emanated from his lips and he dipped his head to her, “It would appear he has. We spoke of you, but he did not fully state your beauty. I was eager to meet you but he said it would be later, after we had arranged this meeting and details of our future relationship." He paused as she reached for her purse and he reached over to gently put a paw on her own, “No no, the payment was something else. Tuo Padre (your father) and I were to negotiate the exact terms of the payment. Since he is not here, I believe he would prefer to speak about it personally. I would not cut this too short though, so why don't we enjoy the evening? Dinner and a glass of wine or three?"
