Cole felt restless as he tossed and turned in bed. He groaned with frustration as even his exhausted body couldn't override his mind into getting sleep. The sun was already up and continued to rise, and even through the little black white noise machine next to his bed, Cole could hear the city starting its busy day.
Cole grabbed his phone in frustration and sent off a few texts. A minute later he got a response.
"Yeah man. Sorry you can't sleep. Wanna meet up down the street from you place? City Roast is in our AO." Mike told him.
"Yeah. Sure! Thanks bro."
"No worries. Not gonna jinx it by saying the Q word but we should have time for a quick bite and cup of coffee. Got my rookie with me if that's ok."
"Of course man. See you in 20?"
"Yup!"
Cole quickly dressed in a nice pair of jeans, a navy blue sweater, his black wool jacket and his shiny black cowboy boots. If there was one good thing he took from his mother, it was to always dress well. You never knew who you'd meet.
Cole was soon out in the avenue, passing pedestrians and people. He smiled and greeted a few of his neighbors and soon found himself at the corner shop the coffee house resided in.
"Good morning, Cole!" the barista greeted him. "I never see you this early. New shift?"
"Nope! Just couldn't sleep. Meeting Mike here for a chat. How are you, Gina?"
"Oh I'm sorry!" The tabby cat frowned. "I'm good! What can I get ya?"
"Uh. Three house roast pour overs to go please, with room. He and his partner might have to run."
"No worries! How's the nursing life?" she asked as she prepped his order.
"Good! Same ole, same ole. How's school? Need any help?" Cole asked the young nursing student.
"Not right now! Thank you though! Got exams coming up soon though."
"Well if you need any help let me know. The world could use more bright younglings to be nurses. Even if you don't come work with me."
"Oh please! You're not much older than me." She laughed as she set down the first cup. "I've set my eyes on pediatrics though."
"Very nice! I know the head of the pediatric nursing wing. She was my mentor when I first got to Cliffton Memorial. Hell, she still is. I could get you in touch! Even if you want to go elsewhere she knows a lot of people in her field, and at the very least she can give you good tips."
"Oh that would be fantastic! I'll let you know. I want to focus on the upcoming exams for now, though." She set down the last cup. "Anything else you need?"
"Not right now. Thanks, hun!" He said handing the cash over. "Keep the change!"
"Of course!" the young lady smiled as she turned to her next customer.
Cole found a set of cushy chairs and a table to sit at the back of the coffee shop by the window. He took the seat with the worst view of the coffee shop, knowing the two cops would want the better view. Cole took a few sips as he watched the doors, his head gears still whirring away. Cole glanced back up to the door to see Mike enter followed by another cop, both dressed in the black pants and light blue button down of the department. Mike just wore a short sleeve, the husky not bothered by the cold, the tiger however wore a black leather winter jacket with all the same police patches and polished name tag as his shirt.
"Hey bud!" Mike approached with a grin and sat down, gun belt leather squeaking, setting his police cap on the table and grabbing his coffee. "Evan! Cole already got us drinks!" He said over his shoulder to the tiger in line wit his cap under one arm.
Cole quickly looked at the young cop and recognition hit. Without his cap pulled low, he immediately realized who the cop was. Coffee spluttered up through his nose as he startled and coughed.
"Jesus man, you okay?" Mike leaned over to him and patted the coughing human on the back. He realized his partner hadn't sat down yet and turned to the tiger.
Tykes stood there with this eyes as big as dinner plates, staring at the human. Mike looked between his partner and Cole still trying to regain composure. His eyebrow raised, he studied the two men and noticed both were blushing. Mike grinned when realization struck him as well. Mike patted the empty chair next to him.
"Come on! Come sit down, stud."
The tiger reluctantly sat down with a huff and mutter "What I wouldn't give for a call tone out right now."
"Oh, my dear rookie. Cop karma is far too bitchy to let this delicious moment pass without playing out. She ain't gonna give us a call." Mike said with a chuckle. With a clap of his hands, coffee forgotten, Mike addressed the two.
"SO. You two huh? Is that where you went after the bar?" Mike asked his partner.
"Yup. Hey man, please don't let this spread around the station." The tiger looked almost sick.
Mike frowned, and put a reassuring paw on Tykes' shoulder.
"You're secret's safe with me, bro. I could not care less who you sleep with, obviously, and neither do the guys and gals at the station. Sarge has a wife for Pete's sake. I just can't pass this little revelation up!" He said, frown turning to a shit eating grin once again. "Cole here told Cala you're quite the stud, and you told me a blonde lady, who I now know to be my distinctly male friend Cole, was quite the dom."
"Jesus Christ help me." Cole said, shaking his head.
Cole and Evan shared a desperate look, knowing there was no escape from Mike's prodding. Evan still had eight hours of shift left with his training officer, plus the rest of his training time with the husky, and Cole wasn't about to, or able to, avoid his best friend either. They were both going to have to ride this one out.
"I don't think our Lord and Savior is gonna be much of a help either, he has too much of a sense of humor, I believe."
"Well if you know everything then what else is there for us to discuss?" Cole said simply, finally finding his composure and planting his metaphorical feet on the issue.
"Oh, don't be like that! I'm honestly just happy and very much amused. The odds of this happening are astronomically low."
"No need to remind us." Evan shook his head and took a sip of the coffee.
A silence fell over the three as they sipped their coffee and enjoyed their break. Mike looked between the two other men and noticed them smiling bashfully at each other.
"Good lord, are you two are a couple of fuckin school girls. I'm gonna go take a shit." The husky noisily got up and made his way to the bathroom on the other side of the shop.
After watching him leave, Cole turned to the tiger.
"Well one thing for sure is you are a damn good fuck." Cole said with a cocky grin, feeling a bit bold. Evan laughed and puffed up a bit.
"Yeah. You were too." He said, feeling better now that the awkwardness had passed and the ice had broken. "Calhoun talks a lot about ya. You two are good friends."
"Yeah. Since middle school!" Cole chuckled, "Talks about you too a lot. His first victim as an FTO. He likes you though, says you'll make a good cop. Just don't tell him I told you that, he worries it'll make your head big."
"Hahahahahah! He doesn't have to worry about that though. So, you work in the ER at CMMC? How do you like that?"
"Yup! It's great! I stay busy and get to stay on my feet. I'd go insane in an office job. It's pretty rewarding too. I know where I fit into the machinery of the hospital so to speak, what my duties are, and what my expectations are. It's stressful and challenging but its good to fit somewhere."
"I know exactly what you mean!" The tiger agreed and scooted forward onto the edge of his seat, leaning toward Cole. "It's the same for me! I put this uniform on and boom, I feel so much more, hmm, right? I guess that's a word. It's also a tough job, a lot to learn, and always changing, but even as the new guy I fit in. Everyone in the force I've met so far are great. Lot's of different furs and people, lot of different views and such. You really get to know people. Don't feel like you're stuck in a ship in a bottle with people that all stand around agreeing with the same viewpoints."
"Same for me. You grow up in a small town?" Cole asked.
"Oh yeah. Out in the sticks. Don't get me wrong, most people were good people, but I just HAD to get away. Joined the army as an MP when I was 18 and never really looked back. Did my 4 years, got an associates degree in two years of school, and now I'm in the CPD."
"Oh wow! I went to college and did ROTC there while I got my bachelors in Science and Nursing. Did four years in the navy after that. Did a tour in Iraq as a butter bar, picked up JG there, then did a deployment on a carrier and got LT there. Got out after all of that a couple years ago. Being gay was not conducive to a good career back then. Ironic that they repealed don't ask don't tell soon after I got out."
"Yeah I couldn't deal with the stress of that either when I was in. When were you in Iraq? I did a tour in 2007-2008."
"Same! Was attached to a military hospital in the Green Zone."
"Damn! I was in Baghdad too. Followed around a lot of important people as security. Probably ended up at your hospital a couple times with them. Thankfully never as a patient. Didn't y'all get bombed or something?"
"Mortars and rockets hit the area yeah, a few times. 'R2D2 with a hardon' kept them off us." Cole said with a chuckle.
"Yeah those things were badass. BBBRRRRRRRRTTTTTTT. Everyone running around freaking out as the shelling alarms go off. We're outside the barracks recording that shit, getting yelled out by our staff sergeant." He said laughing. "Some crazy shit. Makes being a cop here seem so oddly normal."
"You're telling me. The ER here is busy, don't get me wrong, but it's great not to have to deal with soldiers and civilians that are blown up or shot to pieces as ninety percent of our patients."
Both veterans fell into a contemplative silence.
"So, Cole?" The tiger broke the silence.
"Yeah?"
"You free this weekend?" He said hopefully.
"Yeah I am! Took the week off. I was planning on going out to the hills for a hike before the snow hits."
"Cool. You have time for dinner?"
"Yeah! I can make time. If you like hiking you're free to join me as well. I love nature. It's very peaceful." Cole said smiling.
"Friday night for dinner?"
"Yeah! and if all goes well, hiking on Saturday?"
"Its a date!" Evan said with a grin. Both exchanged numbers and settled some details when Mike came back to the grinning men.
"What did I miss?" He said sitting down, noticing the grins.
"Well, Senior. Me and Cole here have a date for Friday." He said cockily, grinning at the human.
"WOOOOOT!!!" the officer exclaimed, practically hopping in his seat, earning a few glances and smirks from customers. He quickly got out his phone and typed out a text.
"Fifty nine bravo, dispatch." Their Motorola's piped up. Evan covered his microphone up before Mike responded.
"Go for fifty nine bravo."
"Fifty nine bravo, we have a report of a ten fourteen, auto auto, minor injuries on 1st and Tyquinco. Reporting parties advising the involved are getting aggressive and are in a verbal altercation. Medical en route but would like officers there before them."
"Copy. Fifty nine bravo en route. We're a few blocks out."
"Copy fifty nine bravo. Time out, nine two two."
"Well, Karma enjoyed the show. Now that she's allowed you two love birds time, we're gonna spend the rest of shift on paperwork and running from call to call." Mike said amused. "Take it easy bro."
"You too, guys." He side hugged Mike and waived at Evan.
"C'mon stud." Mike said, walking out to their Interceptor, preening rookie in tow.
Cole watched them go with a smile. The cruiser lights activated and reflected off the window next to Cole.
"Can I get the lucky hunk anything else?" A syrupy voice enthused from behind Cole, startling him and nearly sending coffee spilling.
"Damnit, Gina! Don't do that! You are way to quiet." Cole nearly shouted, trying to grimace at her, but his smile wouldn't leave yet.
Tina laughed and returned to her post at the counter.
Cole shook his head and smiled out the window to where a car was parking in the spot the cruiser had left.
*bbbzzzzt bzzzzt*
Cole looked down at his phone to see on the lock screen,
"From: Cala Fashionista. To: You and Mike Da Popo
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA....."
Cole rolled his eyes and put his phone back down to the table and felt his smile grow.

Cole was whistling and practically dancing as he heated up his mid shift meal in the break room. Two of his fellow nurses and a doctor watched with amusement.
"So, Cole?" One of the ladies spoke up from behind him.
"Yes, doc?" He said, turning to middle aged gazelle with a grin.
"You seem to be in a good mood. Get enough sleep?" Francine said coyly. The other two ladies giggling.
"Not really! Just been a good day!" He said turning back to his food, clueless.
"Cole, sweety." She said in a motherly tone, setting down her coffee. "You have spent all shift practically floating on air. Who's the lucky man?"
The other two ladies giggled again as he turned to regard her.
"You noticed?" he said around a mouthful of meatloaf.
"Well duh! Out with it!"
"He's a cop" the ladies 'ooooooooo'ed'. "Works with a buddy of mine."
"And? What's he look like? When's the date?"
"He's a tiger. Really pretty, soft fur and great body. He's a vet like me too. Dinner is Friday, and god willing, hiking Saturday."
"First date?"
"Yup!"
"Well done, young man!" The doc said as they all giggled and Miriam and the security guard Robby walked in.
"What's well done?" Miriam asked them.
"Cole has a date with a hunky tiger cop!" Jackie nearly shouted.
"Oh really?" The bear studied the grinning man from over her spectacles. "He got a nice dick?"
"Gorgeous." Cole said before freezing and catching himself. The break room erupted into chaos.
Once the whoops, cat calls and cheering had died down and the ladies retook their seats, Francine regarded the beet red human with a stern look.
"Y'all had sex before the first date?"
"Yeah..." He said shyly, picking up the napkin that had been tossed at him. "We didn't know we had a mutual friend slash coworker on our one night stand. Met up by chance and hit it off."
"Kids these days... At least you both know the sex is great, right?" Miriam asked.
"True!" Cole said, grin returning.
"Good man." She ruffled his short blonde hair. "Once y'all are done here, I need you ladies and stud to start your rounds."
"Yes, ma'am." The three nurses piped up.
Miriam returned to her station giving Cole a look and smile, shaking her head.
"You really walked right into that one. She could get information from a freaking KGB spy." Francine laughed.
"Yeah, I really did, doc." Cole chuckled.
"There are way too many dick needing people in this room for my taste..." the previously unnoticed skunk spoke up by the door with a chuckle, holding a container of food.
"Sorry, bro." Cole chuckled and moved to let the man get to the microwave.
"Eh. At least you got laid!" The guard laughed.
"And a date!" the other nurse spoke up.
Cole's four coworkers bombarded him with more questions as they finished their break and went about their rounds.
That morning, Cole fell into an exhausted, deep sleep with a smile. It had been a good day.
