Chapter Two - The Summoning

=========================

Mjter's attitude continued as they walked through the words, little noise reaching their ears save their own soft footsteps on the earth beneath them. The stench however, grew stronger the closer they got, and Kelly could see her eye's water slightly as they trumped along.

He reached into his bag and pulled out a small bit of cloth. "Here. Breath through this, it will lessen the smell some."

She took it grudgingly. "Thank you. We have been traveling for most of the day, and are not far from the exit. I worry we will meet the beast who's odor this is yet." She suddenly stopped, ears swiveled to listen deep. "Battle. I think the beast has been found."

Kelly thought for a fraction of a second before saying one word. "Where?"

Mjter actually turned and gave him a cocky half smile. "Follow me. And try to keep up."

The pair rushed through the woods, Mjter running swift through what was her home, dodging the roots and underbrush as a second nature. Kelly followed a half step behind her, robes pulled tight so as not to catch at brambles or twigs. His moves were slightly sloppier, but he kept the pace adamantly.

They emerged in small clearing, dappled in the evening sunlight. A person in a dark cloak lay passed out near the center, a large Malboro standing triumphant over his body. At the opposite end a Vorpral Bunny was amusedly watching the scene, eyes bright with chaotic delight.

Mjter looked at the fox who was doubled over breathing hard. "A little too fast for you?" She said, before swooning gently, lading on her knees as she took in a good breath of the Malboro stench.

Kelly quickly grabbed a phial of Smelling Salts from his bag, smearing some under his nose and handing her the rest of the vial. "Keep your head. The stench will get to you."

She gratefully took the rest and smeared it under her nose. It was strong and unpleasant, but offered some protection against the foul odor. "Thank you. So what shall we do?"

"Distract the Malboro and keep and eye on the Hare. If you can keep out of breath range, you will be fine. But no doubt the Hare will try to even odds with Magicks."

With a nod, Mjter launched herself into the clearing, quickly earning the attention of both vegetable and hare. The Malboro launched it's tentacles at her, which she nimbly avoided as Kelly leapt down into the fray.

Kelly rushed to the figures side, and carefully pulled it from further danger, his eyes focused on the Bunny who was indeed casting a spell like he anticipated. His hand was on his stave in an instant, casting the familiar spell easy. The rabbit gave a shudder and began moving in double time, the malboro doing likewise. "I don't think so. Dispel!" he yelled pointing at the Vorpal Bunny who looked up stunned as his movement returned to normal.

Mjter turned her head for half a second and was slammed by a fast moving vine. She fell to the floor, prone as the Malboro opened it large mouth and emitted its Putrid Breath. The small figured convulsed and with great effort leapt away. She landed some fifteen feet back, eyes closed and disoriented. "I can't see. Where is he?"

But Kelly was already acting, staff held out vertically before him. "Just stay where you are." His hands moved from the rod and it stayed suspended as a strange pattern of arcane symbols enveloped him in a circle.

"Scion who resides in darkness, heed the call of your binding." He traced a strange glowing purple glyph into the air. "He who judge the damned! He who are twins in pitch black Hell! He who's wail doth pierce the night. Come to me! Zalera, Seraph of Death!"

A flurry of dark feathers descended on the field as a dark shadow blocked out the sun. An inhuman cold fog settled around them as the Death Seraph slowly melded up from the earth. Darkness shone out from the empty wholes of his skull head, as his wing concealed his body in a sort of dark, feathery cloak. A woman head was perched on it, looking into the battlefield through a crimson visor, her dark purple hair with a unreal shine to it. Mjter shivered involuntarily, glad she couldn't see. "Zalera," she murmured.

Kelly didn't flinch as he pointed at the two opponents frozen in disbelief. "Make it quick, Zalera."

Zalera opened his wing, revealing his strange, human like body, covered in dark armors. He pointed a skeletal hand at the bunny and a flash of pitch black lighting hit it, causing it to squeal and flee quickly. The malboro rushed forward using it breath on the Esper, who shook it off nonplused. He struck it with the same dark lighting, casing it to fall over. It struggled back to its tentacles, preparing another charge.

"End it. Condemnation." Kelly said in a voice barely above a whisper.

The shamaness on his right arm suddenly smiled, before opening her mouth in an ungodly scream. The very trees seemed to shake with fright and the malboro stilled, putrid liquid dripping from its mouth, before it fell over with a heavy thump. It laid there as more foul liquid dribbled from it's mouth, as the shamaness smiled again. Zalera looked over to his summoner and disappeared in a flurry of feathers.

The cold subsided almost instantly and the sun slowly began shining back on the small clearing. Slowly but surely, warmth was returning to the two who had battled. Mjter got to her feet shakily, still unable to see. "You...you can call Espers?"

Kelly looked back at her, hands moving in a soft fluid motion as he cast a spell on the viera. "Esuna."

She blinked as her vision returned and senses cleared. Quickly she got angry and rushed up to him. "A summoner! You're a summoner and you didn't mention it? And of all the Espers you called the Death Seraph! Why!?"

He walked over to fallen person, casing a Scan spell to determine his wounds. As he viewed the results he opened his mouth softly. "Yes. I am a Summoner. People tend to get fearful or angry," he shot her a look, "when they find out. So I kept it to myself. I called Zalera, because he could kill them fastest and would frighten them most."

Mjter mouth hung open in disbelief, her ears still not believing they had heard the wail of the Death Seraph. Still, they had made it through, and she suppose it could have been much worse. "So," she said softly. "What's wrong with them?"

"Knocked out. " Kelly said softly. "He's also got a few broken bones and a few deep cuts from the vines. I can manage it if we can get him to the inn. You should get what you can from the Malboro while I set his bones."

Mjter nodded and pulled a Mythril Dagger from a small bag at her hip and made her way over to the fallen plant. Kelly gathered up a few good pieces of wood and some small vines and set about making a decent sling and splint for the broken bones, taking his time to make sure they were set correctly.

Mjter came back with a nice bag of stinking Malboro parts. "We are in luck, the beast provided a fair fetch. Tentacles and Vines, two flowers, a few pieces of fruit, and even a few vials of essence. Get a fair price we will. Are you ready?"

Kelly moved his hands softly and muttered "Raise" and smiled as he saw the man's shallow, harsh breath slowly return to slow, but stead pace. He handed his staff to Mjter and scooped up the warm body, holding it close to him. "Let's go."
