Chapter 16
Alex and Runetide appeared back in there clearing after missing for three days it was dusk.
Alex hit the button on his commlink almost immediately, ‘Calsifer are you there?’
‘Alex, Alex is that you?’ Calsifer sounded equally relieved and frustrated, ‘where the fuck did you go?’
‘I um, I don’t know actually,’
‘God’s, I thought I lost you, and after only just’ Calsifer stopped ‘well I’m just glad you're alive I will be there in five just hold on ok?’
‘I will.’
‘And a swear to god, if you pull a stunt like that again I will hunt you down and kill you myself got that.’
Alex snorted ‘yes sir’ and after five minutes Alex heard the tell tail wine of a VTOL and a gunship landed a few seconds later, next to were Runetide was standing, Calsifer was the only one on board the stepped of the gunship and nodded to the pilot who took off.
Calsifer embraced Alex, ‘If you ever pull a stunt like that, I will fucking kill you.’
‘So, you have said’ Alex hugged Calsifer back.
Runetide cleared her throat, ‘there is a dragon present and she does not want to see that.’
‘We are hugging Runetide’ Alex said exasperated ‘hugging.'
‘I know, I know’ she raised her hands in mock surrender, ‘just do go all human on me ok.’
‘Don’t go all Lycanthrope on me.’
‘Oh, you are asking for it.’
‘Ok I may be, but will you take us home?’ Alex Asked adding, ‘and you never know Uriel might we waiting there.’
Sure, Runetide said she lowered her hand and Alex and Calsifer jumped on, but Calsifer did hesitate just for a second then he jumped onto her hand.
‘Strange’ Calsifer said.
‘What's strange?’ Alex asked.
‘Runetide’s skin’ Calsifer said, ‘it’s smooth but rough at the same time.’
‘would you mind not poking me?’ Runetide asked.
‘Sorry’ Calsifer replied, he continued to poke Runetide’s skin.
‘So, in all seriousness where is Uriel, she on this planet right? Because I can’t contact her.’
‘Yes,’ Runetide replied ‘but I can’t seem to make the connection either, it could have something to do with the way we were transported, I don't know.’
‘huh’
‘So, where's Serafin she back at base or?’ asked Runetide.
‘She just needs some time’ Alex said.
Runetide looked concerned as she began to walk towards base one, ‘what happened’ she said, ‘I can smell blood but there are no bodies.’
‘well,’ Alex said ‘as far as I'm aware now Calsifer do feel free to interject at any time, but basically after our disastrous encounter with Aborwrath Serafin healed you and then passed out for two and a bit days. I woke up about ten minutes before the ambush on this outpost that teleport drained me, then I assume just after the attack began Serafin woke up and went on a naga massacre looking for Farren, who had been kidnapped.’
Runetide stopped walking, both Alex and Calsifer felt Runetide tense.
‘Is she?’ Runetide asked.
no Alex answer for-stalling Runetide ‘she’s fine for now, she did throw I bit of a tantrum but I calmed her down she just needs some time, she has had three days, I’m sure she will be here soon the magic needed to move a dragon will be easily detectable.’
Runetide hesitated before continuing their journey ‘So, in summary, we're in trouble and we don’t know where Serafin is’
‘Well’ Calsifer said ‘we have very, very rough numbers but if they're even remotely close then yes we may stand a chance, I’m sure Archasia will help and with their numbers combined with ours we might just outnumber them at least initially. We know they have better tec but that doesn't guaranty victory, I think there's very much still a chance we can pull this off.’
‘Did you factor in the loss of four Lycanthropes’ Alex said.
Calsifer Looked confused, Runetide did not, in fact, she dropped her hand Alex and Calsifer lost balance and fell over.
‘Ok I did ask for that’ Alex said.
‘Yes, you did’ Runetide said, she carried them towards Base one in comfortable silence for a bit the sun had started to set Alex and Calsifer sat down in Runetide’s palm.
‘Nice evening’ Calsifer said.
‘That it is’ Alex said he reached out and touched Calsifer’s hand, his hand closed around Alex’s.
‘Hey, you two love birds no making out’ Runetide said, shaking her hands gently.
‘Hey’ Alex said, ‘we were just holding hands.’
‘I know it’s that just humans can be messy.’
‘What's that supposed to mean?’ Alex said, looking Runetide in the eye.
‘Well, you know’ Runetide said a little embarrassed, ‘what humans do.’
‘Runetide’ Alex said outraged, ‘we met two days ago’ he gestured at Calsifer ‘also how would you know?’
‘For the record’ Calsifer said, ‘I'm completely fine with it.’
Now Alex was blushing, ‘you’re supposed to be on my side Calsifer’ he said.
‘What can I say’ he said shrugging.
‘I could say a lot of things’ Alex retorted unable to stop the smile on his face, ‘quite a few things, in fact, but I doubt you would enjoy them.’
Both Calsifer and Runetide erupted into laughter Runetide held Alex and Calsifer to her stomach to avoid dropping them, after all a twenty-meter drop would not have been fun, after several seconds Runetide held Alex and Calsifer out in front of her again she looked down at them.
‘You two are cute I think I’ll keep you’ she gently closed one of her hands around them Alex protested she held them at eye level they could quite literally not be closer.
‘Having fun?’ she asked.
Alex grunted Calsifer looked rather happy, Runetide moved the hand holding Alex and Calsifer up over her head and gently unfurled it she felt them both land on her hair both holding onto the same horn, the sun was just starting to dip below the mountains Runetide could feel the adrenaline surge and know it had nothing to do with fighting, not this time.
‘Hey’ Runetide said looking up even though she could not see them, ‘if I have to clean my hair out, I will kill both of you, slowly.’
There was no reply Runetide rolled her eyes smiling, humans she thought always hugging.
