A Dragon and his Jockey - Ch05.3
Revakulgr and Rain go to visit a farm in pursuit of a new business venture: kobold egg farming. With the help of the Draconic Institute of the Genetic Kaleidoscope, some chickens have been altered to be compatible with kobolds, and his pair of breeders are set loose to do their thing.

Revakulgr padded down the dirt lane, walking beside his mate and matriarch, amused to find himself so far outside the city on such an odd errand. His pair of kobold breeders stood on his back, gabbling away in wonder and pointing out new things to one another, excitedly scrambling from one end of him to the other. Rain seemed equally amused at their antics, though he wasn't sure that she understood just how strange it was to see them outside of a controlled environment. Male kobolds were rare and prized, only infrequently allowed away from the protection of breeding chambers, so everything the pair saw was completely new to them. Of course, the females ran errands and were quite a common sight, so it was easy enough for her to make the mistake. As they neared the farmhouse, though, he gave them a command to settle so as not to make the farmer any more nervous than he already seemed.
The man was eying Revakulgr suspiciously, as if he thought the dragon would snatch up one of the cows that cowered against the far fence of the nearby pasture, which wasn't exactly an implausible idea, but the dragon had been told to be on his best behavior. This was, after all, a business venture, not a buffet, no matter that one of the bovines could probably feed him for two meals as large as they were. A punch to his shoulder brought his gaze down to the smaller human female, and he had to give a sheepish grin at her scowl. He must have been drooling, but he couldn't help it with such tasty morsels so close and defenseless. Still... He settled his wings against his back and did his best to project dignified indifference, which only made the human farmer all the more suspicious.
"So..." the man began, eying the ebon-scaled dragon over once more before turning his attention to the bronzed female. "I still think this is a damn fool idea, but if you got the... whachacallums, and you're still prepared to pay for any hens that get damaged, then we're good to go. Just make sure they don't get into any of the other yards."
The dragon's rider nodded, and craned up to get the kobolds' attention. "Kodo! Podo! Come on down!"
The pair eagerly slithered down the dragon's scales and ran over to cling to the matriarch's legs, nuzzling their soft snouts against her hips, and she patted them fondly. The human male shrugged and gestured them towards the back of the house, where several wire-fenced areas held flocks of chickens. Revakulgr contented himself with remaining at the corner of the house and settling himself with tucked foreclaws to watch, not wanting to frighten the animals more than necessary and thereby increase the difficulty of the task. The sight and scent of such a large predator sent them into a frenzy, but after several minutes of him sitting as still as a statue, they had calmed to the point where the farmer could let Rain and the kobolds into the furthest pen.
It was an interesting venture, he had to agree, though quite an odd one. Their manager, James, had suggested it. Since they had gained ownership of the team, the human's position had expanded greatly to encompass far more than merely public relations and arranging interviews. His pay increase had been commensurate, with a hefty bonus for work well done thus far, and he was eager to prove that he was worthy of his increased responsibilities and compensation. Farming kobold eggs, however, was not something that the dragon would ever have considered a feasible idea save that Rain had pointed out how very much he and other dragons enjoyed them. James himself claimed to have gotten the idea from Revakulgr's comment regarding his pet, and things had somewhat spiraled out of control from there.
And so he now sat watching while his mate let loose his two breeders to attempt copulation with... birds. Meat fowl, fit for humans, not even a mouthful for a dragon. He could eat the entire two dozen of them as a snack, and still be hungry afterwards, but... Well, if the idea worked out, it would most certainly add even more to his prestige. The DIGK had provided a serum which altered the chickens, allowing them to lay slightly larger eggs, compatible with kobold DNA, though less per laying. The main difference was that these chickens laid far more frequently than any kobold, designed for the task through selective breeding, which just wasn't something that dragons had ever considered. Kobolds had been genetically designed and engineered to the perfection of their current form, and no one had bothered to worry about improvements for centuries, at least.
It was amusing to watch the little things chase around the fenced yard, attempting to catch hens that quite obviously did not desire to be caught, and even the farmer was laughing despite his earlier mockery. Or perhaps because of it. The dragon did not like this human, especially the disrespectful tone he had used with Rain, but he would be tolerated so long as he did not push things further. Kodo... or perhaps it was Podo, the dragon hadn't bothered to learn to differentiate them... pounced and caught one of the chickens, pulling it back to grind against its feathered rear. It clucked and flapped and squawked, but the kobold had a firm grip and wasn't letting go. Female kobolds could be quite vigorous during mating, so males learned to take scratches and bites and hits in stride. The dragon could see the rising maleness that split the bird's tail feathers and couldn't help but wonder how that must feel. He made a note to see if he could find an appropriately large avian to try that with.
The bird let out an angry cluck when the kobold pulled back and drove itself inwards, its shaft a fair approximation of a dragon's in miniature with its ridges and knot, something he had been told was not the normal breeding method for such creatures. Most birds did not, apparently, have penises and mated by sloppily grinding against one another, which seemed a purely ridiculous means of passing on genetic material. How they'd ever propagated to become such a widespread family of creatures, the dragon would never understand. Yet it seemed that the kobold genetics the avian had been injected with were doing it a favor in that regard. While it had struggled at first, once the kobold had begun really humping, it settled to staring off with a glazed expression. Now that was a familiar look, one that Revakulgr had put on the face of many a female, and not only when they were dying.
The second kobold had also managed to catch himself a hen and was busily attempting to maneuver it into a proper breeding position while the first was drawing near to completion. It had bitten the back of the chicken's neck, or was trying to. It kept pulling back to spit feathers out of its mouth, but eventually found flesh and clamped on. Their teeth were soft and dull, so the bird had nothing to fear from the bite, and seemed not to mind it to begin with. It was busily clucking away and had fanned its wings, apparently enjoying itself. As he watched, the kobold's hips slowed to a stop, and it hunched crouched atop its conquest, spilling its seed into the bird. When it eventually let go of the avian and stood, the chicken dangled from its groin, knotted and tied, which brought back some fond memories to the dragon. He would have to do that again with Rain sometime soon. They had not had opportunity for some quality mating with the frenzy of arranging their business affairs and lives after recent events.
The first kobold wandered over to plop onto its rear by the second, cradling the chicken in its lap and petting at it while watching the second as it began breeding its own captive. By the time that the hen on the first's cock could pull free, it seemed that their scent had begun to filter through to the kobold parts of the chickens' brains, as the other hens had begun to gather nearby, the same way that any female kobold would naturally gravitate towards a breeder. Of course, when it stood and began to hunt for a second mate, the illusion was broken. As it approached the birds, they fled to the four winds once more, and it was forced to again to chase down its prospective breeding partner.
Revakulgr got a mischievous notion as he watched and took in a deep breath before letting out a ferocious roar that froze the birds momentarily in their tracks. The farmer spun with windmilling arms to fall on his rear. Rain spun with an alarmed look to see what had caused him to let out such a sound. The kobolds were entirely unphased, the first tumbling over his chosen chicken to come up with the bird clutched to its chest while the second simply continued to rut.
"Rev!" his mate exclaimed with a glower that made him feel not the least bit repentant. "Are you trying to scare the damn things to death? Are you trying to scare me to death? What the fuck?"
He ruffled his wings in a shrug and merely grinned as the terrified avians began to squawk and squabble their alarm at the sound. It was loud enough for him to find their protests slightly painful, more than loud enough to cover any reply he might have made, so he simply did his best to look properly contrite at the dangerous finger that Rain pointed his way and the glare that promised punishment at a later time. He inched himself backwards, around to the front of the house, and contented himself with watching the cows, who seemed equally unhappy with him. He decided to pick out the one that looked the juiciest and pay the farmer double for it by way of an apology, as he knew that his mate would demand he give one. Money was the least of their concerns now, after all, and he was feeling quite peckish.
