Chapter 15: Care at the Daycare

Leaving the forest behind and embracing the warmth of the sun once more was a great feeling. Jared knew that it would be fleeting, that they’d be happy enough to reach the Pokémon Center in Goldenrod City before long, but for now, the feeling of the warm air on his face, the gentle sound of waves crashing nearby, and the feeling of not being in such a stifling area more than made up for it. He stretched his arms over his head –
“Ah…ah…”
And immediately regretted it, his hand cramping up from giving all those Psyducks head-pats for as long as he did. He hissed under his breath, clenching his hand into a fist repeatedly before rubbing at his palm.
“Ow…ow…who knew – ow – that they needed that so badly…”
Certainly he hadn’t. As soon as they got their heads rubbed, they immediately leaped back in their pond, their faces turned up in a massive grin. He hadn’t thought that duck beaks could do that, but at least they were going back to the water without so much of a headache. Small blessings, he supposed.
Shaking his head, he set off down the path. The long grass told him that there were probably plenty of Pokémon in the area, but he didn’t start reaching for his pokéballs. Better to wait for a bit, as far as he was concerned. He already had four Pokémon, and he wasn’t sure that he wanted to grow his team much further just yet. Snugs was a great snake, and Shimmer was a wonderful bird, and Lurch was starting to grow into himself, and goodness knew that Croccy was a handful and a half. The four of them were a good team. He didn’t really want to stretch himself further.
Stretch. Yeah. Like the idea of some Pokémon deciding to give his butt a stretch the way that he had been giving his team…attention. He blushed a bit at the mental reminder of what he’d been up to, but he did comfort himself with the reminder that he had been keeping how much he did down. He didn’t have to think of himself as a breeder, or as one of those…well, the worse ones.
He wasn’t like that. He wasn’t.
More to the point, he was here to stop anyone from doing what they had been doing in Kanto. For all that they had pushed certain Pokémon research further than it had ever gone, the Rockets and everyone else involved with them had been horrible to every single Pokémon that they’d pulled in. Even if he didn’t care that much what happened to the people out here, he cared enough about the Pokémon to something.
They wanted this, he reminded himself. Croccy pushed it, they all did. This was never non-consensual on their part.
He shook his head. The bad feelings about whether he was doing the right thing regarding them didn’t disappear, but it was better than it was. He kept walking.
It didn’t take long for him to find a building that looked half-abandoned on the route up to Goldenrod. He paused as he looked at it, cocking his head to the side at the structure half-buried in the trees. The backyard was almost cut off from view entirely, and the front door had branches and vines all but hiding the front door. Despite that, there were obvious lights on in the building, and he could see and hear people moving around inside.
He hesitated, but he had already been seen. One of the shadows paused, then an older man poked his head out the window.
“Hey, dude. Didn’t know we had customers for today.”
“Customers?” Jared asked, arching an eyebrow. “For what?”
“Oh, dude, you don’t know what this is?”
“…Can’t say I do…”
“Oh, man. Hang on. Let me – yeah, just hang on a sec.”
The stranger pulled his head back inside and started rooting around for…something. Whatever it was, he made a lot of noise in the process, moving from one part of the building to another. Jared arched his eyebrow that much higher, lowering one hand to his pokéballs just in case.
Eventually, the door opened. The stranger, a man with thick glasses and graying hair, nodded at him with a smile.
“Hey, come on, come on in.”
“Uh, maybe you can tell me what you’re doing, first.”
“Hey, just a daycare, man.”
“I don’t have kids.”
“Not for humans, dude. For Pokémon.”
He blinked, leaning around the older guy. He couldn’t see into the house, but the sounds that he heard from further in didn’t sound like baby Pokémon running around. Jared pulled his head back.
“You’re kidding, right?”
“Nah, man, just come in. You’ll see.”
“What kind of person would leave Pokémon here for daycare? I mean…why? What’s the point?”
“Hey, we offer plenty of services, dude. Like, you leave them here, and we take care of them while you can’t. Kinda like, you know, leaving the kids at school.”
“…Uh-huh.”
That sounded as suspicious a thing as he had heard in a while. Someone just paying to leave their Pokémon to be raised by others? That sounded like a scam if ever there was one. And the way that this guy was acting? It really felt like way too much.
Probably should report this guy…
Then again, if the police here were anything like the police in the other cities, they’d be completely useless. He should probably take a look. Get the guy’s name, too, with that stupid, stupid, stupid rule.
“Okay. I’ll take a look.”
“Righteous, dude. Come on in.”
He stepped through the door, glancing around. A standard sort of lobby caught his eye, complete with a large, rounded desk that took up most of the room in it. There was a computer on it, a clerk behind it that looked as stoned as the guy behind him sounded, and she looked at him like he was some light pattern on the wall.
“So, like, you here to drop someone off or pick someone up?” she said, her voice sleepy and stoned.
“Um…neither…”
“Yeah, Karen, he’s here to see the place. Maybe the little dude’ll let us help him out.”
“Right on,” she droned.
“I’m taking this dude on a tour. See you later, Karen.”
“Sure, Jim.”
“Good clerk, horrible personality,” Jim said as he led the way into the main hall that connected the different rooms. “You know, great with the computer, but man, she’s just got buzzkill vibes.”
“She does seem a little…lackluster.”
“Dude, you have no idea. So, what do you wanna see first?”
“…You brought me in here to give me a tour. You pick.”
Before I decide to just book it. You’re giving me the creeps.
“Oh, right, yeah, I did. Heh, sorry about that. All the berries, you know?”
“…No.”
“Ah. Uh, well…right, let’s start with the Birdhouse.”
#
The daycare was surprisingly well laid out, and he was shocked to see just how many Pokémon were there. Apparently, despite the ruined-looking exterior, there were a lot of people making use of the business.
Shaking his head at the Pidgeot in the Birdhouse, which was a bunch of trees from the forest carefully selected and groomed for bird nests and housing, he allowed himself to be led through the daycare. There were all kinds of different rooms, each one set up for a different type of Pokémon. The fire-types had a place for them to rest in the heat, with the room so warm that it felt like it was searing his lungs as soon as he opened the door. The water-types had a giant pool of a room with a few floating islands. The rock-types had a gravel-yard, and he saw a Graveler rolling through it the way that a kid would have rolled through a ball-pit. It was kinda cute, he had to admit.
He was just starting to relax a little when he heard a sudden, sharp ‘Reep’ call from another room. Jared froze in mid-step, slowly turning to Jim.
“…What was that?”
“Oh, dude, you’re going to love this.”
“I’m pretty sure I’m not.”
“Man, trust me, you’re gonna love it.”
Jim waved for him to follow, and the sharp little ‘gasp’ sounds that sounded almost like a sheep continued to grow louder and louder. The older man pulled him to the one door that they hadn’t opened yet and threw it open. Jared looked in, and his fingers gripped his pokéballs all the harder.
It was another volunteer, wearing the same sort of blank t-shirt and hoodie combo that Jim wore, and in front of him was a Mareep. The yellow-wooled sheep was on a table, the volunteer stood behind the Pokémon, and his dick was balls-deep inside of the Mareep’s ass.
“Jim…you better give me a damn good explanation right now,” he muttered.
“What, you never seen humans and Pokémon together?”
“That’s…breeding.”
“Nah, that’s the harsh stuff. We’re just having fun. And so’re they.”
“I’ve heard that before.”
“Dude, stop putting off such bad vibes. Look at the little guy. He’s loving it.”
“What are you –”
“Here, I’ll show ya.”
Darting into the room, Jim gave the other volunteer a wave, then reached down. He parted some of the wool that blocked the sheep’s lower parts, and Jared blinked as he saw that the Mareep had a stiff hard-on of its own. It thrust forward when Jim reached down and patted it down there, showing just how much pleasure it was obviously in, and when he finally looked up from where the other volunteer was shoving his way in, he saw a smile on the sheep Pokémon’s face.
“It…likes it?”
“Dude, everyone likes sex.”
“Yeah, but…but…”
“What, the breeding thing? We let them do the breeding; all we do is have fun. They love it, too. They keep coming back. Heck, some of the trainers get in on it sometimes.”
“What is this, some kind of…”
“Dude, seriously, what’s your hang-up on this?”
“Pokémon and people aren’t supposed…”
He shook his head, looking away. Jim finally seemed to pick up on his discomfort, because the older guy stepped away from the sex. He pulled him back from the door and shut it, and they walked back down to the water-type room. Jared allowed himself to be sat down on the edge of the water, and Jim sat down beside him.
“You got a bit of a thing for ‘em yourself, huh?”
“…I didn’t say that.”
“Nah, but nobody gets that upset without a good reason. What’s the matter? Some dickhead hurt a Pokémon you were looking after?”
“…Something like that.”
“Yeah, well, there’s some nasty people out there, dude,” Jim said, leaning back on his hands, kicking his feet in the water. “Some real monsters, too.”
“Yeah…” Jared nodded, looking down at the water. “I thought…”
“Hey, dude, it’s all about making them happy here. Lot of ‘em really want to be held, and then, some of ‘em want more. Nothing wrong with that. Nothing wrong when they get what they’re asking for, anyway,” Jim said, tapping his fingers together. “We’re all living things, and you know how smart these little guys are.”
“Yeah…smarter than us, sometimes.”
“Heh, don’t you mean all the time?”
“Heh…”
He smiled despite himself, helped immensely by the sudden presence of a Seel swimming around just beside him. Reaching down, he rubbed its head, getting the chance to pet down its back before it swam away. It was a small little gesture of affection, and a nice reminder that the Pokémon still wanted to be here.
Not to mention that he didn’t have the Mareep tied down. It enjoyed getting that attention. It didn’t want to run off, it’s not fighting back…
It still didn’t feel right, but he was slowly releasing the death grip that he had near his waist. The pokéballs hadn’t come loose, his team hadn’t been called out. He took a deep breath, then let it out, then repeated it a few more times. It slowly got his heart to stop pounding so hard and it kept his head from feeling like it was going to explode.
“Sorry,” he said again.
“Hey, no worries. Thought you were like us.”
“What do you mean, like you?”
“That you loved Pokémon.”
“I do, just…”
“Just?”
“…Ugh.” He leaned forward. “This is so messed up.”
“Hey, dude. You got something you wanna tell me? Not like it’s going anywhere. Heh. If it wasn’t for Karen up front, I’d forget half the people that come here to drop off their Pokémon.”
Which, in other words, meant that anything that he said here would be kept in confidence, something that he couldn’t rely on just about anywhere else. He looked down at the water again, looking at all the Pokémon swimming around. They couldn’t tell their trainers, either. This was a secret place, somewhere that probably didn’t have any cameras going, either, so nobody got in trouble.
He sighed. He might as well get it out.
“I’ve been…having some…relations with my team,” he said, unable to meet Jim in the eye. “I didn’t really…it kinda just happened.”
“Lemme guess. Randy little guys?”
“You have no idea.”
“So, what’s the problem?”
“The first time…the first time, he’d been used. Drugged. Raped by other, real breeders. And he kept trying to get it from me, too.”
“Ah, man. That’s no good.” Jim shook his head. “Man. That’s a hell of a thing to be carrying around. You okay?”
“Me? I’m more worried about –”
“Dude, you think it’s that easy to get over something like that? The little guy might’ve been hurt, but you got fucked with pretty good, too. You okay?”
“…I’m okay. I just…I shouldn’t like something like that. I didn’t want to.”
“Sex is sex, man. You hit the right buttons, everyone’s gonna have some fun with it. No shame in that. Doesn’t mean anything is wrong with you. Heck, probably just means everything’s working too well, heh.”
“You sure about that?” Jared asked.
“Pretty damn.”
“Didn’t think about it that way.”
“So, what happened next?”
There was something that was so simultaneously endearing and yet irritating about Jim that there was no way for him to hold everything back. Some of it, he did, like the stuff that happened with Team Rocket, and the dreams, but the rest? The sex? The way that the team got all the closer with him afterward? That came streaming out without any real way for him to stop it. It just kept flowing and flowing, and as much as he was embarrassed at the level of detail that he had to give, nothing he did made it stop.
Finally, the whole story was out, including what had happened with Shimmer just the night before. He leaned into his hands, covering his face.
“And that’s what happened.”
“Man, dude…ha. Wow. That’s a lot of stuff, and really fast. You sure that you’re not some kinda Pokémon magnet?”
“I didn’t ask for any of that.”
“Yeah, but you’re kicking your ass about enjoying it. Come on. Lighten up.”
“Only perverts do that. Only…only the people that take advantage of their Pokémon do that with them.”
“You think that’s what we’re doing?”
“…It didn’t look like it.”
“Look. I can’t tell you what to do, dude. Can’t really tell you how to live, what to believe, or anything like that. But I can tell you that I’ve been intimate with every Pokémon that I’ve had that knew what the act was. Sometimes it hurt – lemme tell ya, never, ever take tail-sex from a Charizard – but it made us all closer. Sounds like you got something like that going on with your team. If it’s something that they like, if it’s something that you want – and that’s important, too, whether you want it – then go for it. Just don’t let people find out. Not everyone’s ready to understand that we can all live together like that, little dude.”
“…How are you this high and this smart at the same time?”
“Who said anything about getting high? That’s just the problem of spending too many nights around Drowzees, dude. They start munching all over the place.”
He winced. That put a whole different perspective on it.
Before he could ask anything else, Jim got to his feet with a grunt and a groan. The older man stretched his arms over his head, then stretched out his legs, before stepping away from the pool.
“I gotta go take a turn in the other room. Boone’ll need a break. Those Mareep want it all the time, I tell ya. You look like you need some time to think, so why don’t you sit here for a while? Head out if you don’t really want anything when you’re done, but…yeah, just take some time to relax. Looks like you need it.”
He did, more than he wanted to admit. Nodding as Jim walked out, he took off his shoes and socks and put his feet in the water. A couple of Magikarp swam over, nibbling at them, and he smiled down at them. It was…oddly comforting.
Always did feel more comfortable with them than I did with people, he thought. Just…didn’t think I’d be this…tempted…
Then again, it had started a long time before he had been pulled into that whole criminal ring. He had been interested in Pokémon before, had had those little thoughts. He’d never thought much about them, but then the Rocket experiments had taken them to a whole new level, showing him what could be done, and how horrible it could be for the Pokémon involved, how much it could hurt them.
Had that been bad enough to bury those things?
Never did have interest in people. Not like that.
But Pokémon? Was there…
Maybe there was. Maybe Jim knew what he was talking about.
#
Eventually, he left the daycare, making his way back to the main road. Karen didn’t say anything as he left, and Jim must have been busy, because the older man wasn’t there when he left. He shook his head. Maybe he’d come back here sometime, particularly after seeing the eggs.
Eggs. That had been the other thing that he had noticed in the sex room, but they’d had the same appearance as the one that he’d carried from Mr. Pokémon and Professor Oak back to Professor Elm. They weren’t like the eggs for Project Chimera, and certainly not like anything that he needed to be worried about. Not yet, at least.
He tapped his pokéballs, and Croccy hopped out. The Croconaw started bouncing around, hopping up and down in an imitation of his old Totodile dance.
“Yeah-yeah-yeah, good to stretch.”
“Heh, felt like you were in there a bit too long?”
“Just a bit, just a bit.”
“You feel up for a walk?”
“Oh, yeah. Where are we, anyway? Why’s it smell like sex?”
“Because that’s what they’re doing back there,” he said, nodding over his shoulder towards the daycare. “Apparently, all the time.”
“…Wow.”
“Yeah. Wow.”
“Can you do that?”
“Croccy.” He shook his head, even though he blushed just a bit. The more that he thought about it -
“Maybe later,” he said, shaking his head. “For now, let’s walk.”
And so they did, making their way up along the coast. The daycare was shortly after left behind, and he put his thoughts of it behind, as well. Comfortable as Jim was with the whole thing, and as comforted as he had felt, he still had a job to do. There were other assholes out there that weren’t that good with their partners when they were doing that sort of thing, and he needed to sort this out for their sake.
They were just passing by one of the longer stands of tall grass when something flickered just out of sight. He blinked at the sudden movement, almost wondering if he’d actually seen it, only for it to zip by again. This time, he caught sight of a yellow and brown shape for a half-second before it was gone again.
Just behind it was something else, another yellow-ish shape, though this one was almost black on the bottom. A Drowzee, he realized. It was leaping back and forth in the grass, trying to find something –
Zip. Another burst of movement, and this time, he finally got to see what it was. An Abra, one that was zipping forward, back, and then up, and then down, always just out of reach of the Drowzee chasing after it. It was almost like the Abra was teasing the Drowzee, and it wasn’t until he got a good look at the Abra that he realized that it was something else.
The Abra was asleep, half-snoring, and the Drowzee was trying to catch him. More than that, the Drowzee looked drained, starved.
“What the heck?”
“Drowzees eat dreams,” Croccy said. “I remember Elm saying that one time.”
No wonder it was chasing the sleeping Abra, then. It was trying to get a meal from the dreams that it was having. Every time that it got close, though, the other psychic-type darted out, disappearing and reappearing some way out. Teleportation, he realized belatedly, something that was allowing the little Pokémon to keep just out of reach.
Taking another look at the Abra, he could see that that one had some damage, too. Little scars, little cuts along its body, probably from teleporting to places that it didn’t quite mean to teleport to. It proved that as it bumped into a rock, nearly toppling over and bruising its shoulder. He winced; if anything, the Abra’s teleport ability seemed to be imperfect, unskilled, or even out of control. If it didn’t get some help soon –
Another change, another teleport, another shift. This time, it popped up right in front of him, and on instinct, he grabbed hold of it. The Abra squirmed, half-asleep still, and the Drowzee ran for it and him. He grabbed the Drowzee, trying to keep the pair of them apart –
WHOOOSH!
And then they were gone.
When the white light faded, he found himself standing in the middle of a Pokémon Center, his hands still wrapped tight around the two Pokémon that were so locked in conflict. A nurse stood behind the counter staring at him, and then saw the Abra. She nodded.
“Teleportation, huh?”
“Mmm…mmmph…”
She offered him a bucket, and he traded her the two psychics that he was holding for it. The sudden up-chuck of everything that he had left in his stomach was as immediate as it was unpleasant. He felt something tugging at his leg, realized that Croccy was down there and needing the same thing, and he lowered the bucket down. The Croconaw started to do the same thing as he’d been doing.
As the little guy heaved, the nurse contained the two Pokémon in spare balls, putting them down in a nearby tray. He groaned, wiping the corner of his mouth.
“What are you doing?”
“Taking them for treatment, of course; I assume that that’s why you brought them here?”
More like they brought him here, but he’d go with it. He nodded, shaking his head. The sheer distortion of being teleported was so…so unpleasant, and he didn’t know if he’d ever want to do that again. He held one hand to his stomach, sitting down a moment later.
“Sorry about the…the surprise entrance,” he said. “They were fighting and…yeah…didn’t see that coming.”
“It happens,” she said. “Would you like a room?”
“Please.”
#
He and Croccy fell down almost at the same time on the small bed in the second-story room. They groaned into the pillows, neither of them particularly happy about the feeling that remained in their guts post-teleportation. Eventually, however, they were able to turn and look at each other.
“What do you think’s going to happen to the psychics?” he asked.
“No idea,” Croccy said, shrugging. “But I bet we get them.”
“…Probably. Ugh. I didn’t want to get more.”
“Come on. It’ll be fun to have new friends.”
“Yeah, but you keep making the others fuck me.”
“You like it.”
“…”
“You…do like it, right?”
“…” He sighed, rubbing his head as he rolled onto his back. He covered his face. “I’m still figuring that out.”
“Did I do something wrong?”
“No, no…kinda…”
Croccy pushed at his arm, and he allowed the smaller Pokémon to slide under it, leaning against his chest. He idly petted the water-type, trying to put his thoughts into words. He shook his head.
“You kinda made me have fun with you, and I…I kinda thought then that it was the sort of thing that only bad people did.”
“But…you enjoyed it.”
“That didn’t mean that I wanted it. You were making it less and less that I had a choice, and I just…I couldn’t say no, then.”
“…I…I’m sorry,” Croccy said, and the Croconaw lowered his head, hiding it against Jared’s chest.
Jared winced, immediately regretting being quite so honest about what he was feeling, but what was he supposed to do? Lie and say that everything was alright? He’d been sorting through his feelings on this off and on ever since it happened, and despite his discomfort, he’d been roped into more and more sex with his team. He hadn’t been asked; they had asked, but he hadn’t really asked. He’d done it for them, rather than for himself.
And that was where the problem was. If he was going to do this, then he needed to be in it, too, in it and wanting it. He sighed, rubbing his face.
“Why does this have to be so complicated.”
“I’m sorry,” Croccy muttered again.
“Apology accepted,” he muttered. “But look. No more pushing them to do it. No more convincing other Pokémon that we are going to do this, okay? I want this to be a thing that we do because we want to, not because we have to. Understand me?”
“…Yeah, I get it.”
“That doesn’t mean that we’re stopping, it just means that we have to be smarter about it.”
“You…you’re going to be okay, right?”
“Yeah. I’ll be alright. You?”
“I’ll be okay. Just…I’m trying. I’m trying.”
“You are.”
He patted the little guy on the back, then groaned as he forced himself to sit up. Knowing how the Pokémon Center worked, he was pretty sure that they were going to have a few hours before the Abra and the Drowzee were going to be ready for release. That meant that they had plenty of time to get other things done, to explore, and…
Well, if there was time…
He glanced down at Croccy again. The Croconaw did have a lovely tail, and he knew for a fact that there was plenty of fun to be had there. Maybe there might be time for a bit of that, when they were back here for the night.
At least, if they were quiet. They needed to not show off too much.
…Arceus dammit, Jim…
Just chatting that out had taken a lot of the weight off of him, and he felt like he was almost a new person. He certainly felt more willing to entertain the idea of being intimate with his Pokémon again, and they were close to him, very close. He felt like…like they were more than friends, after all that they had done together.
Little fantasies started popping into his head, from being coiled by Snugs and sucked off again to being ridden by Shimmer, to pinning Croccy down and making him understand just how it felt to be on the bottom rather than the top: all of them hot, all of them sexy. He groaned as he started to pitch a tent in his pants, and that, in turn, got Croccy’s attention. The Croconaw looked down, then grinned.
“Oooh, are you in the mood?”
“I am, but we’re not doing that. Not yet.”
“Come oooon.”
“Soon, but not yet.”
“Ugh, why not now?”
“Because it’s early, and people might notice. For now…for now, how about we go for a walk? See what we can find, huh?”
“Bet that we won’t find sex…”
In a city this big, who knows what we’ll find?
